Round 5
"You gotta be kidding me, Mr. Jowl," He murmured at his math book, which dumbly stared with its dogged corners back at him. "I mean, how do I know what √3136 is?" "It's 56 times 56," A voice rang from above his head, and he jerked his head up, almost hitting her jaw with his forehead. "Jesus. How did you get here without me noticing?" Shawn stared at June, stomach plunging down at the sight of the best student of the year. She only stared back. "Why? You don't even have to tiptoe to get to a table in this loud, messy cafeteria, Shawn. And seriously, just use your calculator to get the whole book done in advance-Jowl never checks the back if his students solved it all in advance, simply since it has never happened before," She smirked, then pulled out the chair beside him and plopped down. While she dove her glance into her backpack to find her lunch bag, Shawn only stared at her seat in surprise. "So that was how you became best, huh?" After a moment, he accused her, but not too much in the 'yep, I caught you, so hands up" style. When she resurfaced from the depths of her bag, June held out a calculator and an apple already in her jaws. She nodded at him, thrusting the device into his hands. Shawn started to type in all the numbers he had in his damned math book. "Thanks, by the way, for a couple of reasons-for telling me how to survive math, lending me this thing-" He pointed his eraser part of the pencil at the calculator-"and finally leaking out the secret to your top grades-the overuse of calculators," He wrote down all the answers right away as soon as the machine spat it out, and June stared at him. "Well, was just tired of watching people suffer from things that can be easily solved-and lying to all that I became top one by pure effort. Anyway. Heard you got a new job at a fast-food restaurant," "Right. Well, Fast Picks was the only place ready to take me in-don't blame me for the choice. I wanted to work at McDonald's, but it was already abundant of employees milling about in its store, smelling of grease. Anyway, Fast Picks can't be the worst, uh huh? I still get my money," "It is not the top one either, though," June murmured beside him after barely forcing her first bite of apple down her throat. Shawn found no words to answer her. "But...maybe, we can make it a top, Shawn Richard," His head automatically turned to face her directly, only since her voice had been very mischievous and implying a smile. "Well, by using, um, a calculator that can fool the McDonald eaters to mistake Fast Picks as McDonald's entrance?" She let her apple hang between her jaws to hit him square on the back, just as guys do to guys. "Nah, you silly. The method I used-and the method you're using with you math, is cheating after all, and isn't going to last for long, unfortunately. Maybe you should try for real in making your restaurant popular," Shawn groaned and snapped his book shut and threw it into the zippered and open slit of his bag. "But I expected something brilliant from you, my friend," He said, pulling his bag onto his shoulders, tightening the straps, and picking up his half-full tray. He was quite aware of how many tons of food waste was created by schools and shitty students like him, but for once, he didn't care, since he needed money, Fast Picks was not a popular place with its extra-plain foods that had little salt and grease on them, and the best student of the year wasn't making too good solutions for him just like she had done with the calcultaor.
June watched, helpless, as her ride or die elementary crush left the room-but she knew that she mustn't let him slip out of her life like how he had just left the room, since she liked him.
Shawn scratched his head. "Let me get this straight-am I the cashier or the-" His boss spat saliva out the window for the drive-thru."You are the cashier, newbie. I heard that you have a bit of experience in it, huh?" "Yep. Worked at a movie theater 2 years ago for fun and to delay doing homework," His boss didn't seem to be enjoying the last piece of info and said nothing. Shawn just positioned himself at the front desk, staring at the front door, as if his staring powers would create human beings to enter the place, all hungry and desperate to use up their dollars. But 30 minutes zapped away with silence at the door, and his eyes hurt so much that he positioned his stare at his legs, trying to be positive and think of school and normal life. June came to his mind straight away. He had revered her since elementary and it only got more intense when she was nominated the best in class. Though it had just turned out that she had cheated along the way, she still seemed like a genius to him-if only she could come up with a way to increase sales-
"Good evening. Hope you manage to recognize your friend, Shawn Richard," His head once more bolted up to see her approaching the desk. He could already feel heat rising to his cheeks as he felt the curious stare his boss was giving him from behind. "Jesus, June!" "Stop calling me first by Holy God's name, though I'm not the most devote gal in the world. I came here to advise, Shawn. Buying stuff here may be a choice of mine," Her gaze turned from his eyes to the space behind him, to the boss. "Can I please pardon him for a sec, sir? We have this really imporant project budding, and he forgot it," She expertly made the man's head nod twice, then grabbed Shawn's wrist and jerked him out of his seat to pull him away out of the biulding. June checked the angles of the windows and mirrors outside, saw that the man could still see them through various glasses, and pulled Shawn deeper into an alley which stank from the smell of grease, rotting garbage, and a dumpster. Shawn was immediately forced into a dilemma since he felt as if he was in heaven for being in so close quarters with a girl who had luckily sprayed perfume to her clothes in the sewage-smelling alley, while the fact that he was sharing the air with her was slowly making him unconsious-he wasn't simply used to dealing with so much anxiety.
"What?" He managed to whisper breathelessly. June leaned back to a comfy distance until Shawn was breathing in the scent of garbage normally, then placed a hand on her chin as if in deep analyzation of the male human being in front of her. "What I said at lunch, Shawn. What if you introduced new food or services to the place? I can help you in that," "The boss would sure be pleased, June," He said her name for the first time, directly at her. For a second, he couldn't believe that she blushed at him-well, as far as he knew, logical girls never blushed at him. "Don't be sarcastic. Or just find another job in this tiny town and don't ask for my help," Shawn grinned at her. "I guess I can take in your first suggestion first, then, just in case," June grinned back at him, and in addition to his swimming head, came a sensation of pleasure and liberaition from only having had to watch her silently at school came to Shawn's mind along with the magical movement of the muscles located at her mouth of hers, and he reached out to shake her hand, trying not to 'hold' it, in the way that all the others did proudly in the corridors at school. She shook his hand and let hers idle on him for a second longer. "Um, I'll call you later, then. I really gotta help mom with dinner, and I will suggest how you'll succeed after that, I need um, a reorganization of new menus," She let go of his hand first, patted him on the same back where she had hit him earlier, then whirled away, poking her hands into her tiny jean pockets. She was in seconds gone after turning at the bend in the road.
Before the smell of her perfume would go and the smell of garbage would hit his notstrils fully, and the realization that she had left could hit him square, he sighed, then reentered Fast Picks-but simply, his own mouth muscles won't stop twitching after the event occurred.
