The Schuyler party [Part one]

Twelve days passed and the Schuyler party was only one day away. James knew he had to go as he had already promised E. Schuyler that he would do so. He was hoping that sometime during the party he could sneak away to an empty room and read a book if it ended up being too much.

Hamilton wasn't going to attend the party. He had fought with A. Schuyler on Monday and had tried to explain that he was too busy working. Eventually, E. Schuyler had later shown up and settled the situation.

As for the situation between James and Thomas it had taken five whole days before neither of them brought it up. When Thomas did do it James explained that he had only given him his forgiveness back, not his trust and friendliness, therefore they are not friends. Thomas had stayed with him 24/7 ever since it didn't help that they were in almost all the same classes.

It was Friday afternoon when James was sitting in his room reading about Isaac Newton to one of his classes. He had taken a personal interest in the subject and had lost all track of time. He was beginning to get tired and it was getting harder and harder to hold his eyelids up.

When Thomas entered his room to ask him about something, James' face was in his book. Literally. James wasn't the type that snored so Thomas had no idea how deep he was sleeping.

He decided to not say anything just in case. He took the blanket that laid at the end of the couch in the living room.

[To anyone that was wondering: the college that they are going to is highly funded by the state and each dorm room is designed to give the best working environment for the students. Students with mental problems are often given single rooms. Normal students get one to three roommates]

He laid it over James the same way that he had done the first night they were here. He then silently walked out of the room and turned the lights off.

The next day James woke up to a pleasant smell coming from outside the room. He figured that Thomas was making, for at least himself, some breakfast.

Although this was an unlikely thing for Thomas to do, it was the most likely situation.

Judging by the way he was sleeping and the comfortability of his 'pillow' he didn't even need to open his eyes to realize that he had fallen asleep at his desk.

He opened his eyes slowly and felt the back pain creep in on him. He had been used to waking up in this position the previous years and would have little to no trouble, getting used to it again.

It was first when he began stretching that he noticed the blanket that was hanging off his shoulders. "Did Thomas do this?" he silently asked himself.

The pain in his stomach stopped him from reading to much into it. "Better get something to eat, " he mumbled under his breath as he got up and out of the room.

His theory was confirmed right when he saw Thomas slowly stirring whatever he was making and resting his chin in the palm of his other hand. James didn't make any effort to be quiet. He was still pissed at Thomas and had no problem showing it.

He caught Thomas' attention pretty quick, but he only looked at him for a second. "What are you making?" James asked, sitting down on the couch.

"Mac and cheese, " James looked over his shoulder and gave Thomas a look that clearly indicated "For breakfast?". In reply, Thomas shrugged his shoulders and said:" I was all we had left, "

James rested his head on the back of the couch and closed his eyes for two seconds. "I'll pick up something at the store later,"

The breakfast was quiet and heavy like the once they have had before. James was mainly focusing on what was on his phone, but it was hard with Thomas' eyes drilling into his skull. James believed that it was to annoy him, but it could just as easily be something that he wanted to say but didn't know how to.

"So the Schuyler party is this afternoon," James said. Thomas continued to look at him. " Yes?"

"I'm looking forward to you making some friends so you don't have to stick with me like glue," he said before shoving another spoonful in his mouth. "Maybe, but I like sticking with you, James,"

James looked up at Thomas, he hadn't taken his eyes off James. When they locked eyes, Thomas smirked devilish. James didn't get him. He, Hamilton, and Laurens were the only one that despised him. He could be friends with literally anyone else.

When they are done James decides to take the dishes. It's only fair. He can see Thomas shifting his eyes between him and his phone in the corner of his eye. He's not entirely sure if his uncomfortable or just used to it.

Suddenly he hears something through the walls. He knows that it's the sound of someone speaking, no shouting, but he can't seem to remember where he has heard it before.

"Do you know who that is?" he asked Thomas. "No. They monologed for quite a while before you woken up so their roommate stood outside. I don't know if you know him, but he is a bit taller than you and is almost bald,"

Burr.

James dropped everything he was holding and walked to the door. "Hey, what are you doing?"

"Not now Jefferson,"

James walked outside and immediately spotted Burr sitting on a bench nearby. He slowly sat down beside him. "Aaron Burr,"

Startled wasn't the word that James would have used to describe how Burr reacted, but he was a bit more than just surprised.

"Oh, James, " he said soft. "So is Hamilton still your roommate?" he asked desperately hoping for the answer to be no.

"Yes, but we both moved to the South side,"

They turned around and saw Hamilton monologuing to himself inside their room.

"He's been nonstop talking about this 'Jefferson' guy. At first, I thought he liked him. Turns out he hate him more than anything in the world,"

"Yeah, Jefferson hates him back just as much,"

"How do you know?"

"He is my roommate, " Burr patted James on the back and gave him a sorry smile. "Oh, right! I heard that you proposed to Kitty. How did it go?"

James looked off into the distance. He wasn't trying to be poetic or something like that, he just didn't want to make eye contact with Burr when he told him.

"Well, I got down on one knee. She got up and out of the restaurant,"

"Oh, shi- sorry,"

"Nevermind, it's been months anyway,"

Their conversation was suddenly interrupted by Hamilton stopping his monologue and swearing loudly.

They both turned their heads and looked as he stormed out the door. "Why did you leave?!" he shouted at Burr. He was coming closer with heavy sounds for every step he took. "I left half an hour ago. During your first monologue, " Burr replied in confusion.

"You could at least have told me,"
"I did!"

James watched in silence as Hamilton dragged Burr into their room and started talking again.

"That was useless, " James said. He got up and walked back to his room highly disappointed with the talk.

"They stopped talking. Do you think they are making out with their roommate?" Thomas asked when James came back inside.

"Highly unlikely. It was Hamilton that was monologuing and his roommate is Burr,"

"Oh! Who's Burr?"

"They guy you saw outside. He is relatively quiet and collective. I don't know if you'll like him,"

"You're quiet and I like you, " Thomas said smiling.

James sighed. He sat down on the couch as far as possible from Thomas. "A different kind of quiet,"

"I finished the dishes for you by the way, " Thomas told him. James lifted his head a bit and saw the sink completely empty. "What? Why? You didn't have to do it,"

"I didn't have anything else to do while you were outside, so I figured why not?"

James thought for two minutes then got up. "I'm going to finish reading then I'm heading out to grab some food before we head off to the party. I don't trust you going alone so wait for me, " he said looking at Thomas with strong eyes.

Before he closed the door behind him he casually said;" Thanks for finishing for me. It was nice of you,"

Thomas had said:" No problem, " in reply but James didn't hear it.

James would say it was about six when he was done reading. He didn't bother to check his clock since he was already planning on heading out. Thomas wasn't in the apartment when James left. Or James didn't see him at least. He could have stayed in his room, but if he was he was being remarkably quiet.

James didn't want to think about him now and put the whole thing in the back of his head.

It was about a twenty-minute walk, from the grocery store to the campus dorms and the other way around. Which meat that he had about twenty to thirty minutes to get all the stuff they needed before he heads back.

He needed to be back again an hour before just to make sure everything is okay when he and Thomas leaves and to make sure Thomas himself is ready in time.

About quarter into the shopping James rounded a corner and saw M. Schuyler taking something off one of the shelves. He concluded that her older sisters made her pick up something for them in the last minute. He didn't want to engage in any kind of conversation with her and quickly backed away from the aisle.

James managed to hide from her no more than five minutes before he got a tap on the shoulder and heard "Mr James Madison," in a serious yet cheerful tone.

"Schuyler!" He had plastered a fake smile on his face, not from sadness but fear. Ms Margarita Schuyler was quite cheerful, happy and obnoxious. Her kindness and looks were what drew people to her though.

She frowned. "You don't need to call me by my surname, you know," she said. She was carelessly leaning on her shopping cart which she had put perpendicular to the aisles and was pretty much blocking the chances of anyone getting past them. "Alex stopped calling us that a long time ago,"

"The 'long time' that you are proposing is roughly three and a half months. And I think we both, Ms Schuyler, know why Hamilton stopped,"

M. Schuyler didn't respond to that. Her eyes shifted away from James and she was clearly thinking of something to say. James took his chance and excused himself, paid and left.

When James returned Thomas had practically bombed the living room with his clothes.

"What happened here?!" James exclaimed almost dropping the food.

"Oh! Hi, James. Don't worry I'm just getting ready for the party,"
