Prologue
James' eyes faded away from the clock. The time was 11:34.
He was in the middle of a math class right now, but unable to pay attention. Of course, he didn't need to pay attention. He was great at math, he hated it like the rest of his class, but he was good at it.
The problem wasn't that he didn't pay attention. It was what he was thinking of instead that bothered him. He hasn't thought of it in years and wanted it to stay that way.
He didn't want to think about it. He didn't want to think about him.
Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas left a few years back with his family to France. The problem wasn't that he left, it was that he promised to message James every day but didn't. It killed James, he spent hours crying in his bed knowing that his best friend had forgotten about him. Alexander and Aaron used days to get him out of bed and back to school.
And now the guy that nearly ruined James' life was stuck in his mind in the middle of class.
"James Madison!" the teacher shouted from across the room. Some of the girls were chuckling under their breaths and almost everyone was looking at him. There was always those that didn't care as long as their life wasn't on the line.
"Could you please solve the equation on the blackboard, please?" she asked and pointed. James took a look at it and saw that it was pretty simple. They had done it multiple times before. "The answer is 47," he said with confidence. The teacher sighed. "That's right, but pay attention now and stop daydreaming,"
"Of course, Mrs"
After class was lunch. He was approached by Alex in the cafeteria while he was getting food. "Dude, what happened in class?" he asked.
Alex was always getting as little food as possible, he was poor and couldn't buy a lot of food.
"I was just thinking,"
"About what?"
"Thomas," I said without even wanting the words to leave my mouth. "Thomas..?"
"Jefferson,"
Alex had never met Thomas before, but he knew about him because James was always talking about him during the first year of college.
"Well, I have a project that I could need some help with. It would help to take your mind of Jefferson for a while,"
Alex always used to call people by their last name. "That way you don't get so attached to them in case they backstab you," he always says.
Quite frankly I think the only person he calls by their first name is his girlfriend, Elizabeth Schuyler or Eliza for short.
"What the project?" James asked while counting his money. "Well," Alex started. "John Jay and I are going to write a few papers showing a new set of rules that would make campus better for all of us. We are planning to make it about 25 pages long to get covered every point,"
"Why are you asking me?"
"You are good at this and like writing, kinda, so why not?"
"Aaron said no didn't he?"
"He said no,"
James sighed. "E-mail me the details and I'll help you out,"
"Thank you so much, Madison,"
"Whatever,"
James paid the lunch lady and went over to an empty table. Even though he was friends with both Alexander and Aaron he didn't want to sit with them. They had way to energized friends.
When James came back to the dorm he dropped he backpack by the desk and slung himself onto the bed where he laid still for about five minutes. Then a pling came from his phone.
At first, he thought that it was the e-mail from Alex, but not even he could be that fast. Instead, it was a message from his girlfriend.
GF: Hi, how are you doing?
James' girlfriends' name was Kitty, yes that was her real name. They had met back in freshman year through their mutual friend Aaron at a party. They hit it off pretty well and had now been dating for two and a half year.
There was always something off when James was with Kitty, but he had talked to Alex about it and was told to just sweep it under the rug and forget about it. And so long it had been going fine.
You: Yeah, I'm fine not even sick right now.
GF: Great! Can I come over and hang out?
You: Sure
James looked at his phone for a few seconds before turning it off. He knew he was supposed to be to be ecstatic about his girlfriend coming over but he couldn't do it.
He was still thinking about Thomas. It was stupid he knew it but he remembered something that he said before he left.
"I'll be back by the senior year,"
James sighed. 74 days left.
