79 | A PACT WITH THE DEVIL
SUPERMAN FLEW AS fast as he could to the Fortress of Solitude. The alarm had gone off just a second ago. However, as he approached the main entrance he could see a whole through it. He landed carefully using his super hearing. He could feel another heartbeat.
However before he could move he smell smoke and then he lost consciousness. The hero fell to his knees, but didn't had a nightmare like the other victims of Illusion. She didn't want to raise suspicion, not yet at least.
Illusion came out of the shadows just as Zelda flew down with her own Pink Lantern costume. She looked at Illusion unimpressed before turning to look at the Fortress of Solitude, the alarm going off.
Zelda used her own ring to scan the vast rooms to track down Nayara's ring. Successfully may I add. Zelda looked at the carefully hidden ring that was dropped in black clothe inside a box. "Batman is clever, but not by much. Men, they think they can outsmart us my queen." Zelda said looking down at her ring.
Zelda than dropped it to Illusion. "Made sure it is delivered personally. I can feel the Queen getting stronger and the girl's soul weakening. Letting that woman, Sharon, ruin her powers was a gamble but one that will allow us to win and bring back Queen Saphire." Zelda said to Illusion.
"I am getting paid for this. Right?" Illusion said sarcastically.
"You sure are." Zelda said to her.
. . .
Nayara looked at Tim Drake before delivering a hit. Tim then avoided the next one. Nayara jumped avoiding a low kick. At the edge of the mat Bruce Wayne stood with Alfred. The brunette was assigned Tim this time which could mean she was improving but her wounds still hurt.
Before she knew it she was on the floor and the young hero was still standing. He send her a small smile before helping her up. "I will like to think that fighting Tim now means I am getting better. Right?" Nayara asked looking at Alfred.
"The real challenge is Dick." Tim said, smirking as he thought of how Richard Grayson was so interested in Nayara.
Nayara thought about it, and smiled to herself. "I think I am not there yet." Nayara replied to him.
However the peace was broken by a call from the Batcomputer. Nayara looked at the time and wondered who will be calling this morning. Maybe League business, she thought. Nayara shared a look with Tim, knowing they now needed to leave the cave to give privacy to Batman. The two department, but Nayara made sure to wave goodbye to both Alfred and Bruce.
"Clark?" Bruce answered the call.
Superman looked at his friend and colleague. "Someone attacked the Fortress of Solitude. I can't remember much but they took something." Superman warned him. "They the ring." Superman warned him.
. . .
Nayara left the coffee shop, watching Helena Wayne go. They had met up with catch up, and Nayara enjoyed their time together. She suspected maybe Helena felt a little alone too, and her company made her at ease. She had been told that before by Barry and Iris.
However she stopped when she heard the voice. "Good to see you, Nayara." Illusion said, making her turn around. "Don't worry, I am not here to make a scene. I come to deliver a gift that you lost." Illusion said to her, handling her the ring.
Nayara frowned as it shone brighter when it touched her hand. She felt the power of the ring pulling her like never before. "What is this?" Nayara asked her.
"A gift, one you can use to save your loved ones. After all, can you really now? It hold so much power. Power you can use to save them." Illusion said, repeating the words of her nightmares. This freaked Nayara out, but made her touch the ring.
Would she....She stopped herself. "There is no such power." Nayara reminded her.
Illusion shrugged at her. "I don't know Green Lantern seems doing fine with it." Illusion said to her. "I heard about your little mishap with Sharon. Not a shame she is dead though. She was always on my path and being all macabre." Illusion said to her.
The brunette frowned even more, and eery feeling coming to her. "Now, don't loose it again or I will have to fight that big hunk dressed in blue." Illusion said to her before starting departing, but not before adding something else. "Not a word to anyone about this, or I will hate to see an accident happen." Illusion added before leaving her.
Nayara stood frozen on her spot, fully knowing who she was talking about. But why will Superman have her ring in the first place. Then she landed on Batman, who must have given it to him to hide it.
The fear was intensify when she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder. Nayara jumped out of her skin and turned to meet the eyes of Jason Todd. "Nayara?" Jason asked her. He had seen the interaction from a far. He had been tracking down Nayara since this morning.
"Jason," Nayara said, snapping out of it. She frowned wondering what he was doing and how much he had heard.
"Who the hell was that?" He asked her, as he looked down at the ring. One that looked too familiar.
Nayara hid it quickly on pocket of her jeans. "Nothing." Nayara said, pulling away. It seemed like Jason was finally pull her back to reality.
"What is going on. What are you doing in Gotham?" He frowned at her.
"Training." Nayara answered, which was the truth. It seem she will need to train even more with Illusion around. Why would she return the ring? Nayara knew about the secret HQ that belonged to Superman: The Fortress of Solitude. It was almost impenetrable, but Superman didn't had the security that Batman had.
"Look, this is my own mess to fix." Nayara whispered to him.
"Where are you really from Nayara? Because that thing looks really alien to me." Jason said to her.
"I am from Gotham." Nayara lied to him and he saw right through it. He frowned even more.
"No you are not. You are too nice to be from Gotham." Jason reminded her. "Gotham breaks you eventually and you need to pick yourself back up. So whatever secret you have you can keep it." Jason said to her.
"Do you really hate me for it?" Nayara questioned him, looking unsurely at him.
"We all have secrets." Jason reminded her. "As long as your secrets don't get yourself or someone else killed." Jason added to her.
Nayara took it as his way of warning her to be careful. "What are you really doing here?" Nayara asked him.
"I had a preposition for you. Someone mentioned you were training, so I thought I could help out. I could teach how to really survive." Jason said to her. Nayara looked at the gun. "I could teach how to use one of those." He said to her.
Then she thought of Bruce who didn't had any guns in the house for a reason. "I can't. It's not the Bat's way. I might take it one day." Nayara said to him.
Jason stared at her. "You really taking on his steps? You know you don't have to. You don't own him anything." Jason said to her.
"I know. But I want to." Nayara told him honestly.
"Even if it gets you killed?" Jason asked her.
Nayara sighed looking down at the floor. She no longer feared death, and part of her was her fear of letting her heroes die. But the other part was that she felt that she was a glitch in time and space. She wasn't supposed to exist.
Jason looked at the conflict in her eyes, but he didn't spot any fear. Almost like she was willing to welcome death with open arms. "Look, whatever happens I got your back. You saved me once." Jason said to her with difficulty.
Nayara looked up to him and nodded. "Thanks. But somebody else would have done it too. Plus we are even." Nayara reminded him.
"Nobody would have, especially not for me. Take it or leave it." Jason said to her before turning to leave her alone. Clearly she needed to sort some things out.
. . .
Nayara thought of Illusion's word as she looked at her old Swan suit. She thought of the X-Men wondered if they will accept her back without her powers. She turned to her ring that sat on the bedside table.
Carefully, she picked up the ring....
Everyone dead. Nightwing pleading with her. Destruction. You can't save them alone, the voice said...
Nayara let the ring drop as she held her chest. The visions she had seen overwhelming her, along with Nightwing's broken and bloody mask.
ALERT! ALERT!
Nayara frowned, snapping at out it. She was about to put on the ring but stopped herself. No power could come with its limitations and dangers. The brunette left the ring on the drawer on the bedside table before making her way down the hall.
However she stopped when she spotted an assassin of the League of Shadows. Nayara swore, running the opposite way. She saw another one trying to grab and she slide down through the side.
SWOOSH!
Nayara avoided being cut in half. But not smoothly and she felt the sting and the cut on her side. In front of her stood Talia al Ghul, Damian's mother and the next leader of the League of Shadows.
Talia looked at the brunette. "Where is Batman?" She asked her. Nayara held her side, where there was a large gash that will for sure scar.
"Behind you." Nayara said to her. The assassins turned around and then the lights were off.
Nayara felt a hand behind her followed. "This way, come on." Nightwing said, before the lights turned on once more.
"We got to stop meeting like this." Nayara said, holding the blood by her side. She watched as Nightwing opening the path for her to pass through. An assassin reached towards her, but Nayara kicked him in the chest, causing him to fall down.
An arrow passed through an assassin that was aiming towards her. Nayara recognized the purple arrow of Huntress. "I can get her out." Huntress said, turning to Nightwing.
"Be my guest." Nightwing said to her.
"I just need to get to the cave." Nayara said to them. Nayara threw a dagger towards the assassin and it bounced off. The brunette then was picked up by one of them, but she kicked her way out before flipping him over her.
Nayara groaned in pain, holding her side. "I can clear the path." Huntress said to her. "I still think getting out is the best option." She added.
"I can help from the cave, lock them out by sections." Nayara reminded her. Then she turned to Nightwing. "Batman taught me how to do it in case of emergency." Nayara said to him.
Huntress shot another arrow and she saw the opponent fall to the ground. Nayara made her way through the halls, but warned Huntress to help Batman. The brunette sighed, making her way through the stairs.
She spotted Alfred on the computers. "Hey Al. I think we need to do protocol 33." Nayara said, having memorized the different techniques and protocols that Batman had created.
. . .
Nayara finished patching up Nightwing's chest. She took out her gloves and attempt not to stare too much. A blush creeping on to her cheeks which was seen by Nightwing. "Got a lot of practice with this." Nightwing said, taking off his mask.
Nayara was finally able to see the blue eyes she adored. "Alfred taught me a few tricks, thought I could help out in case of an emergency." Nayara informed him.
"I think that makes you officially part of the team. That and almost dying. It's a rite of passage." He teased her.
Nayara couldn't contain the smile. "Yeah, but I still don't think I belong. It's a little complicated." Nayara informed him. Then she looked up to him. "If you ever need a hand, you can crash at my place. It's far in Central City, but I will
"I thought you were already resident at Wayne Manor." Nightwing said to her.
This made her shake her head. "I just crash here. You are a resident." Nayara said to him.
Nightwing smiled at her. "Honorary resident." He corrected her.
Nayara smirked at him, shaking her head. She held back a laugh she didn't know existed. The issue with Illusion gone for a second. Nightwing's phone beeped, and he knew he had to go. As much as he wanted to stay the night with her.
"Titans." He informed her, as he pulled up the rest of his suit. He zipped it carefully not to rip off the stitches and the bandages.
Nayara thought of her words for a second, thinking of it. "I will be awake, if you drop by. I can restitch them." Nayara said, pointing at his chest. Nightwing could stitch them himself, but he couldn't refuse an excuse to see her again and check in on her. The brunette had been wounded but not as bad as with Sharon, but he still saw how Nayara flinched ever so slightly from them.
He put his mask on, covering his eyes; which Nayara thought was a shame. But she stopped herself from thinking too much about it. "I will pass by." Nightwing said to her.
Nayara couldn't contain the smile that appeared on her face. "I will see you then." Nayara muttered under her breath seeing him leave.
VROOM! VROOM!
Nayara turned at the sound of a motorcycle coming in. The driver wearing a red helmet. Nayara shook her head wondering why Jason was coming in, but she knew the answer. However, she wasn't expecting for him to check in after their earlier conversation.
"You aren't dead." Jason said to her. "And the old man still standing?" He asked her.
"Thankfully. He is a friend." Nayara answered him.
"That's a real shame." Jason replied with a smirk. Nayara gave him a look. He dropped it quickly. "I was busy, got here as soon as I got the warning." Jason said to her.
"League of Shadows, lead by Talia al Ghul." Nayara informed him. "I haven't completed my training
"Still thinking of not using my stuff?" Jason asked her.
Nayara thought back at the ring but shook her head. "I might take you in on the offer. I am not cleared to be on the field just yet." Nayara
"You aren't a soldier. None of us are." Jason reminded her.
"I know." Nayara replied. "Why are you really following me, Jason?" Nayara asked him. "I am bad luck, Jason." Nayara added to him.
Jason smirked at her. "I doubt it, because since meeting you I had a pretty good streak." Jason informed her. Nayara gave him an incredulous look, not believing him. "You might be my good luck charm." He said before putting on his helmet again.
Nayara watched him depart with a sense of peace. She guessed now she had friends, but will she able to save them all from all the destruction she saw.
. . .
Nayara stood next to Alfred outside the medical bay. "Expecting anyone else tonight?" Alfred humored her.
Nayara's smiled, thinking of Nightwing. "Maybe someone. I should be good patching them up." Nayara answered. "How bad is Bruce?" Nayara asked him.
"He had endured worst." Alfred reassured her. Nayara nodded at him. "It wasn't your fault. It was bound to happen, now that Damian decided to stay with his father." Alfred informed her. He knew that if he were to speak about personal matter from Bruce, Nayara will keep it secret. "Although, you seem to already have known that." Alfred said, not seeing the shock on his face.
Nayara shrugged. "Maybe the hero thing is addictive. I certainly miss it." Nayara said, thinking about the time Batman almost send her to a mission with the Titans as the Swan. "Sharon had tides to the League of Shadows, didn't she? She is dead and still dragging us all through the mess. My fault too." Nayara said with regret in her voice.
She had circles under her eyes, nightmares becoming even more violet after touching the ring. "Joker killed Master Jason before he was bought back. That was a mess. One that nobody could have predicted." Alfred said to her in thought.
Nayara looked up at the mention of the very personal event. The one she knew about. "Sharon was much like Joker." Alfred started looking at the young hero.
Nayara shook her head, thinking of all the cruelty that Joker had done to the Batfamily over the years. What he had done to Jason Todd and Barbara Gordon. A sinking feeling was felt in her stomach. "Joker is not Sharon, he is much crueler." Nayara reminded him.
Alfred saw by the look of her eyes, as she knew what Joker was truly capable of. "They both aim for where it hurts the most. I haven't seen that much persecution against someone like Sharon's." Alfred said to her.
Nayara thought of Sharon, and her eyes. "They have similar hate in their eyes. But still Joker is different. He is the representation of death itself. And you should always fight it." Nayara recalled, thinking of Batman.
"If Bruce were to die, the city will be in danger. They need the Batman, they don't need the Swan. I was never supposed to be here, Alfred. I can't carry the guilt if Bruce were to die because of me. It will physically kill me." Nayara said to her. "I couldn't even help today, not like I wanted." Nayara reminded him.
"Talia was here for Damian. She wanted to check in on him and in the process she wanted to test him too. See how far he will go." Alfred pointed out to her.
"Right, because every typical parent does that." Nayara muttered under her breath. Alfred heard and smiled.
She looked down at the ground, thinking of her words. "If you could have it, the power to save someone will you take it? Even if you don't know what that power might be? I know Bruce wouldn't but..." Nayara thought to herself, will she. If she needed to save someone, will she finally pick up the ring. She ignored it, and kept the question to herself. "The world needs Batman, Alfred. Not me." Nayara said to him before walking away. The world hanging on her shoulders.
