77 | I LOVE THE RED
NAYARA WAITED patiently until things had calm down. Barry refused to let her stay in her apartment alone now that Sharon was freed. A sicking feeling was within her, wondering when this torment will end.
Her phone rang and she saw a call from Nightwing. "You are okay?" Nayara asked worriedly, wondering how he was standing against the League of Shadows.
"I am okay, everything died down." Nightwing said to her. He had noticed the concern in her voice and his heart leaped a bit. "Everything okay at the Wayne's?" Nayara asked him.
"We are all accounted for. I gather you got Alfred's message." Nightwing said to her.
Alfred had messaged Nayara asking her to stay away from Gotham. But Nayara wasn't hurt, she knew about the attack and who had purposely had sent the message.
Her mind went back to Sharon escaping, and orchestrated the attack; making her feel guilty "And I gather you know who knows about Sharon too?" Nayara said to him.
"We suspect it was an orchestrated attack. One to leave them to free Sharon, we don't know why yet." Nightwing informed her.
"Don't worry about me. I am with Flash at the moment. After the news I would be in house arrest for the foreseeable future." Nayara told him with regret in her voices.
"Nay?" Nightwing said on the phone. "If you need bailing out you can just call. I will be there in a heartbeat." Nightwing added. Nayara's own heart leaped as well.
. . .
Nayara sighed looking at Barry Allen. "You know I can stay by myself for a second. I don't need to be in house arrest." Nayara commented to him.
"You are not in house arrest." Barry pointed out.
"You need to get to your tux appointment in ten minutes." Nayara reminded him. "I will be fine. I have call to make. Plus, you are just one call away." Nayara reminded him. Barry sighed. "Come on Bruce let me stay by myself and nothing happened." Nayara pointed out.
"You got taken." Barry said to her.
"Now that was my own for trusting someone I shouldn't." Nayara intervened. "It wasn't Bruce's fault that one. It's mine and in the process I risked their life." Nayara informed him. "Barry, just go I will be fine. Really. Plus, I need a call to make." Nayara encouraged him and he left.
. . .
Nayara looked at her screen, after getting debriefed by Nightwing she knew she needed to talk to Bruce.
When the call was answered, she saw the scratches and bruises in Bruce Wayne's face. "Good to see you alive and breathing." Nayara said to him. "I think you heard the news, about Sharon?" Nayara added.
"We will handle her." Bruce said to her.
"I am afraid of what the League of Shadows know. It could get really bad very quickly." Nayara thought about what will happen if the League of Shadows knew of an alternate world they could invade.
Bruce saw the regret in Nayara's eyes. "I am sorry. This is my fault." Nayara said to him. She hated putting other at risk. She felt completely destroyed.
"It's nobody fault. You didn't ask for any of this. Nobody does." Bruce said to her.
"My powers, they aren't coming back. Are they?" Nayara asked, looking at him. "I know they aren't, but if they were somehow will you do it? Take the power." Nayara asked him, thinking of the ring.
Bruce looked at her. There were dark spots under her eyes once more. "I don't know." Bruce answered honestly.
KNOCK, KNOCK!
"Hey, I got to go, but I am glad everything is okay." Nayara said to him before ending the call.
Nayara walked to the door more than surprised to see Helena Wayne. She had a reluctant face on, but she could see she was trying to be here. Nayara took it a step sign of allyship. The two of them had been in touch since Helena had visited in the hospital.
"You look better." Helena said to her. "Nightwing came to see me as Huntress, I think we should talk." Helena added.
Nayara moved, letting her inside. "Come in, Helena." Nayara said, greeting her. "How is Kara?" She asked her.
Helena nodded. "Powergirl sends a hello." Helena said to her.
"You know, I never got to thank you, for rescuing me. I heard you figure out how to remove the collar." Nayara said to her. But part of her wished that Huntress had done it before the damage had been done. "If you came here with another mission, I am sorry but I don't do that anymore." Nayara informed her.
"Why?" Helena asked, and Nayara saw she seemed a little disappointed. Helena wasn't going to admit it but she liked Nayara, it reminded her of her dad a little bit.
"I am no longer the Swan. I got no powers. Sharon stole them from me." Nayara explained to her.
"The collar. Right." Helena said in thought, looking down in thought. "I know it wasn't my place to step in but I heard you were in trouble and you helped me before, so we can call it even." Helena told her.
"How did you found out I was even missing?" Nayara asked her.
"Nightwing. He cornered me when I was out patrolling, thought I was helping that blonde that attacked you. Truly, I am sorry I couldn't help more." Helena said solemnly. Then she turned to the picture that were scattered around Nayara's apartment. "I got some bad news. I found Illusion." Helena informed her.
Nayara looked at her unsure. "You shouldn't go against her." Nayara said to her.
"I was able to record a conversation with someone named Zelda. I think she is from out of world. Apparently they were waiting for you to break, and thought the best way possible was by letting Sharon proceed." Helena said to her.
Nayara frowned, wondering if she could ever withstand a threat from outer world with little practice she had. Then she thought back at the ring, the power it had. She shook off the thought.
"And what about Nightwing. What did he told you?" She asked.
"How I got Sharon Carter out of prison working with the League of Shadows." Helena informed her. "Which I didn't do by the way. Just want to be clear." Helena added.
"I think he knew the other Huntress. Bertinelli wasn't the saint that you are." Nayara pointed out. "I haven't told them about you, it's your secret and part of me doesn't know how it..." She began but Helena continued for her.
"How it affect this world. Trust me, I don't want them to know. At least not yet." Helena said to her.
Nayara frowned, thinking of Bruce. "Not even your father?" Nayara asked her. This stopped Helena for a second.
"I know stuff because as I said before I am not from here." Nayara said to him.
"If you had a way, will you ever go back?" Helena asked her.
Nayara doubted it, part of her wasn't really to face what it will mean. "I don't know." Nayara said to her.
"They thought about diving us up, That's what Illusion tried to do when I encountered her." Helena said to her.
Nayara thought that maybe she will be more subtsently to the power of the ring. Which wasn't so far from the truth. "Did you held your ground?" Nayara asked her with a small smile.
Helena returned it. "You bet I did. Drew her out of town for a while." Helena informed her.
. . .
Nayara sighed, looking up at the newspaper with a headline and a photo of Batman's shadow. The brunette had been playing with a batarang with her hand as she thought of her next steps. She was thinking about Bruce's words.
"Do you want me to pick it up the food?" Helena said from the door. Nayara looked over her shoulder at the raven haired woman her age.
Nayara nodded. "If you want to stay. I know you probably are having some second thoughts." Nayara said to her.
Helena Wayne shrugged at her, and sent her a quiet smile. "I like you. I stay." Helena said to her. "Plus we don't know if the blonde jerk is showing off." She quickly added.
Nayara froze before turning to look at her. "Sharon?" She asked her.
Helena picked up her sweater from Nayara's couch, and walked closer to her. "I do surveillance." She started but Nayara cut her off.
"Is she near? Like have you seen her near me or in the area?" She quickly asked her in panic. Helena put a hand on her shoulder, seeing the fear in Nayara's eyes.
"I began working on her since you mentioned she was working with the nightmare lady." Helena said to her. "Nayara? Who is she to you?" She asked her.
Nayara got quiet at the words. Holding the batarang tightly. "You got to step away from that. It's my responsibility, my fault. You can't get involve." Nayara said to her. Helena looked at the brunette's eyes, seeing her fear for the first time in the months since they met. "You got to please stay away from the case. I am begging you." Nayara said to her quietly.
She took deep breath, trying to calm her breathing. "Last person that...they ended up dead Helena. Please, just keep as far as possible from her." Nayara begged her. Helena was taken back at the walls that had fallen on Nayara. The calm centered hero was crumbling in front of her. "I can't have....Trust me just this once." Nayara whispered to her.
"I haven't seen her." Helena answered her. Nayara got silence and nodded at her, trying to pull out her mask once more. The mask she used to hide everything, to act as if nothing happened. But she wasn't quick enough. "Look, if you need anything. Just let me know, okay?" Helena said to her.
"Yeah." Nayara casually said.
Helena took a step towards. "I can help. If you need it. It's better to work together than by yourself." She said to her. The brunette nodded at her before turning her eyes to the batarang. "Nay...whatever it is. Just know I am here, to help. You just got to let me know. Okay?" She said to her.
Nayara smiled at her, grateful for it. "Thank you." She said to her. "So, now that you are staying. What do you think?" She asked before walking to get all the menu of her favorite places to eat.
Helena laughed, looking at them. She smirked seeing one that had a sketch on its corner. When she took a closer look it had a blue bird with a heart, singing. "I didn't knew you drew." Helena said to her, looking at the menu.
Nayara looked at it, smiling. "That's a place this guy, Dick Grayson, recommended to me." Nayara said to him before looking for her phone.
"You drew the blue bird on it?" Helena asked her.
Nayara snapped her head towards her. "What?" She asked in panic. Helena laughed at her reaction, pointing at the sketch. For a second she thought that Helena had figure out Nightwing's identity.
The brunette smiled, finally catching the drawing. She hadn't known that Dick Grayson had drew it in just before giving it to her. It was intended as a surprise to brighten up her day. "It's singing." Helena explained to her, watching how Nayara began to smile at a distant memory. "What's up with that look?" She asked, leaning back on the couch in amusement.
"What look?" She asked her.
"Whose is this Dick Grayson?" Helena said, nudging her on.
Nayara shrugged at her. "He is a friend of a friend." Nayara answered him. "Actually, he is the first person Bruce adopted, raised him as his own. So of course we cross paths often." Nayara explained to her. Helena hummed 'yes, right', not convinced by the look of the brunette's eyes.
"I say we order it. It's a favorite for a reason." Helena said catching the phone that Nayara had thrown at her. The two of them smiled.
. . .
CRASH!
The brunette jumped at the sound of a broken window. She turned to the cause of it, spotting the body of someone else. However, she recognized the red helmet. Nayara swore under her breath watching him grunt as he moved. He tried standing up but couldn't.
Her eyes were drawn to the red bat on his chest. One that resembled the blood that was coming out of his wounds, tainting the floors. Nayara quickly knelt next to him. While most people would have run away at the sight of him, she didn't. Because she knew who was behind the Red Hood mask, Jason Todd. The former Robin.
Nayara took out Jason's helmet in panic, checking for any head injuries. Then she moved to try to contain the blood in panic. "Please, please don't die." She said under her breath, containing the blood from his suit. Jason groaned slightly feeling Nayara's bloodied hands on his face "Please, I am begging you, Jason please..." She whispered trying to work quickly to save his life. Her anxiety was through the roof and her tears were clouding her vision but he needed her. "I need you...keep your eyes." She continued.
The brunette swore loudly, seeing the blood on his head. Jason mumbled something. He wanted to stop her, but she quickly grabbed his hand. She gave it a reassuring squeeze "It's okay. I promise. You are safe..." Nayara reassured him. Nayara sighed, seeing him slowly loose consciousness after her words.
She swore loudly, sitting him up. She quickly acted, getting all the materials she needed. With difficulty, she pulled his body up to her couch. The adrenaline of the dying Robin gave her the extra strength that she needed to pull it off.
She pressed a bandage to put pressure on the head as she worked to the larger wounds. Slowly, she took off the top of his suit while she contained the tears on her eyes. For a second, she closed her eyes, trying to calm her breathing. Once she opened her eyes again, the focus was on the task at hand: saving Jason Todd's life.
. . .
Jason woke up from the couch, slowly turning his head to the side. He opened his eyes, just to see a poster of Batman on the wall. He growled at it, and tried to seat up, but stopped due to the pain. Still, he rose up and looked around the apartment.
He realized the top of his armor and suit were off. Panicking, he touch his face just to feel his mask was still on. Slowly looking around the room, he was quick to spot the sleeping body of a brunette at the feet of the couch, with bandages and first aid kit still on her hands. Her head was tilted down, hair covering her face.
Jason then looked down at the blanket the covered his other half, and relaxed when he realized he still had his pants on. He had his own share of weird experiences, and he wished this wouldn't be one of them.
He froze when he spotted a batarang laying next to the brunette's phone. He slowly rose up to see it, but fell on the ground due to the pain in his chest. He groaned when his body collided wit the floor.
Nayara yelped, being woken up by the crash. Then she panicked quickly catching Jason on the floor facing down. Nayara quickly stood up, being awoken more by the sight, and tried to helped him up. Just to be roughly pushed back by Jason.
Now it was Nayara's time to groan in pain as her head collided back with the floor. "Asshole!" Nayara said loud enough for him to hear. Jason stopped moving, realizing the brunette was in pain.
Nayara sat up, holding the back of her head as her sight became a bit hazy due to the hit. "You okay?" Jason asked from the floor, realizing it took her time to recover. He frowned for a second, knowing this was clearly not one of his best moments.
Nayara sighed, closing her eyes slightly. She didn't reply, knowing he was going to feel a bit guilty. Instead she opted for taking a few deep breath and opening her eyes agin. "Can I help you? And don't say you don't need it because you do." Nayara sharply said to him. Jason sighed, moving his head to finally see the face of the brunette.
He gulped seeing her tired eyes, feeling a bit guilty to have hit a girl. Nayara walked to him, and she used all her force to turn him and seat him up against a wall. Jason looked at her as she moved with all the patience in the world. "I don't hit girls." Jason bluntly said looking at her.
Nayara did something that he wasn't expecting. She smiled at him. "I trust you on that." Nayara said to him, looking down at the bandages she had put on that night. Jason was slowly analyzing her and she knew it.
The brunette knew him, and secretly adored him. Hence the panic she had last night. She had the biggest soft spot for Red Hood, despite all the darkness around him. Sometimes she found him extremely funny.
"It's okay. You didn't know who it was. Reflexes I guess." Nayara noted as she sat opposite to him, realizing his badges hadn't fallen off. It was then he was able to see the blood stains on her clothe, clearly showing that she was the one that helped him last night. By the look of her eyes she had hardly slept at all.
"I will recommend staying until you can actually walk. Maybe go to whoever patches you up. Or you can go to a decent doctor. Just say you had an accident or got mugged. I mean it's Gotham for godsake." Nayara admitted to him. She brushed the hair off her face before slowly standing up to get some ice from the fridge.
Nayara sighed when she felt the ice at the back of her head. Helena wouldn't be finding out about any of it. She will force her to go to the doctor, especially if she knew she almost lost consciousness from the hit.
Jason looked at the room while Nayara was on the kitchen and frowned. "Do you know who am I?" He asked her.
"Red Hood." Nayara replied without skipping a beat. She would have said his name, but caught herself before she spilled it. Jason frowned at her. "I didn't took out your mask. Just your helmet to make sure you weren't bleeding up there." Nayara added as she leant back against her kitchen counter.
Jason looked at her calmness in astonishment. "You know." He stated to her. Nayara looked at him as she finally eyed up his eyes from under his mask. Jason didn't know how to react to the trust the brunette on him. "You didn't call the cops. Did you?" He asked her. The brunette could hear the gruffness in his voice, but he was clearly letting it drop as he began to realize she wasn't completely a threat.
Nayara laughed in amusement. Jason was clear to see the adoration in her eyes as she looked at him. "You can if you want." Nayara said before walking around the kitchen to get some water for the hero. Jason was confused to said the least.
He groaned, seeing the poster of Batman on top of his head. "You hurt?" Nayara asked, approaching quickly at the sound.
Jason looked up at the brunette again, seeing her concern. He coughed, shaking his head. "Then what's that sound?" She asked, crossing her arms over her chest. The brunette looked down at his chest and his body trying to find any new spot filled with blood; but nothing. He let out a small smirk, looking up to her. Then she stopped, thinking back at Jason. The man she knew was the masked vigilante. The one she secretly adored.
Her eyes scanned the poster of Batman above his head, and she realized the reason. But she didn't say it, instead she moved her attention somewhere else. "I am getting you some pain killers." Nayara said, walking back to the kitchen to search for the water. Then she moved to her bedroom, and Jason could see her move around to find a bottle. The brunette then sat on the floor, to handle it to him.
Jason was a bit shocked at the brunette's calmness around him, and the attention. "Pick up a lot of strays?" He asked her, when she remained on the floor. Nayara held back a laugh at the questions, knowing what he meant. Jason frowned at her laugh, but she didn't batter an eyelash.
"Sometimes." Nayara commented to him, leaning back. Jason scoffed at the answer, not looking at her. "Plus, I am fan of the color Red." She said, standing up from the ground and walking back to the kitchen.
Jason sighed, trying to study his surroundings. The apartment was a decent size, and it had parts of Nayara scattered throughout. "The back window is always open, if you are planning of going out. Put it is quite a fall." Nayara said to him as she worked on the kitchen.
She tried to not think of her tiredness and the hero in the living room. It wasn't like he was intimidating - although the criminals will argue against it - but she knew him. She had secretly been a fan for years. She held an unconditional love for the mighty and chaotic Red Hood. The Lost Robin.
On the living room, he finally was able to see the scattered newspapers that the brunette cleary had been reading and his guns somewhere in the back of the room. Part of his suit laid in a table. His helmet stood perfectly still on it, the sun making it reflect a red hue across the single apartment.
Jason sighed, realizing he couldn't get up without the help. Nayara finished the food and turned to take a peak at him. She stopped and walked closer to him. Without a second word, she helped him up. The brunette struggled, but she helped him nonetheless.
She maintained a steady grip while she walked him to the couch. The same one he had almost die the previous night. Without skipping a beat she handled the plate with food.
Jason eyed it with suspicious. Nayara sighed, but she was a patient person. Especially knowing who he was and his past. "No hungry?" She asked him softly.
Jason eyed the food and then the brunette who was helping him. "What do you want?" He asked her. He leant forward, frowning at her.
She pressed her lips on a thin line. "For you to get better and not die." Nayara replied quickly, but with all honesty. This threw him off his game. Jason nodded at her back. Then he eyed the poster of Batman.
She followed his eyes to it. "It was a present from a friend." Nayara commented to him. Nayara smile knowing Barry had gotten it framed and everything just for her.
Jason then turned to her, and took the food. "There is food in the pantry too." She noted to him. Jason eyes concentrated on her chest where most of his blood was centered. Then he looked up to her face. He was quick to spot the tired circles around her eyes, and her stiffen stance. She still held an anxious air, despite her none-fearful look at him; which was a change for once.
"You should have let me to die." Jason snapped at her.
Nayara didn't even flinch for second. "I never would have." Nayara said to him back, her voice soft. Jason finally leant back and accepted the food. Nayara nodded at him and left to give him more space. However, he could see her eyes drift towards the broken Red Hood mask on her table; but it was't one of fear but concern.
. . .
Nayara checked his wound throughout the afternoon, and took the time to help him. By the end of the night he was better, but not enough. However, he felt the need to get out. He felt unsure of her intentions. Nayara knew this, and yet she didn't push him. She took the time with him, and Jason felt it. The last he had checked, this was a safe house that was part of Batman's grid and clearly a new one.
Her phone began ringing as she was changing his badges. Nayara ignored it though, her attention was maintaining Jason alive. "You can stitch pretty well." He said to her, as he was able to see underneath the bandages.
"I had a practice." Nayara admitted to him. Earlier that afternoon, he had made a joke that he wasn't going to die for a couple of minutes if she went to change. Nayara smiled at him, knowing it was his way of reassuring her.
Jason was not seating in her toilet, as she cleaned up his wounds. "My friend...he will get injure a lot and so I learned." She added.
"Was he a criminal?" He asked her.
She brushed the hair of her. "No. He was kind of like you." Nayara answered with a small smile. Jason stiffen a bit at her words. "He helped others. But he passed a way." Nayara commented to him.
He scoffed at her. "I am certain you met someone who isn't the Red Hood." Jason told her.
Nayara looked up to his eyes. "I doubt anyone will try to act like the Red Hood." She said, with slight amusement in her voice. Then she thought back at what Jason will do to a fake Red Hood. "They wouldn't be as intimidating. They lack the spark." She quietly joked to him as she finished up his wounds. This time it was Jason time to chuckle.
As Nayara put things away, Jason stood up more. He watched as the brunette continued her day to day things, not fearing him one bit. He then looked at the batarang that was place near her night stand along with a picture of a blonde man.
Nayara caught him seeing the picture, and gave him a sad smile. "He died." Nayara said to him. "He is the friend I mentioned to you." She mumbled under her breath. Jason looked at her and she had a distant look in her eyes.
He wobbled across the apartment to his mask and his suit. "I should get going." He said to her, beginning to get ready but flinched at the pain. Nayara ignoring Jason's protest helped him with the suit. Her eyes remaining on the red bird across his chest.
Jason looked out the window, the night had began to settle. It was the perfect cover for him. "Thank you." Jason said to her. Nayara nodded at him, ignoring the phone that had rang, again. Nayara sighed, walking it over to see multiple missed calls from Bruce. When she looked up Jason was already near the open window in her bedroom.
"You should lock it." Jason said as he exited it, but remained on the edge. Her window let to a small balcony. Nayara reframed from smiling at his concern, even if he hid it behind his gruff voice.
Nayara nodded at him. "I will tonight." Nayara said to him. Jason was about to leave but stopped before turning to look at her again.
"Name?" He asked her.
"Nayara." Nayara said to him. Jason nodded in response. She leant on her window sill, while she waited for him to leave. "Take it slow this couple of days." Nayara noted to him.
Jason held his blank expression but she knew her words had hit him hard. "Lock the doors at night. Don't go out for the next couple of days." He said to her. Nayara frowned at his words. "Don't let anyone you don't know inside." He quickly added again. Nayara knew why he did so she didn't ask anything back. Jason had a line of people looking after him, wanting him dead and he couldn't bare with the guilt if they had followed him there.
Nayara waved a last goodbye before locking the window in front of him. Jason nodded at her before disappearing into the night. The brunette remained there for a couple of more seconds before turning to her phone to call back Bruce.
He picked up instantly "You okay?" Bruce said through the call.
Nayara frowned at his words. She clearly wasn't, the anxiety of loosing Jason had taken a toll on her. "I...I am fine." Nayara said to him. "I am alive." She mumbled as she walked back to the living room.
Bruce sighed from the other end of the line. "Doesn't mean you are okay." Bruce replied back. Nayara closed her eyes, knowing she had been caught. "Alfred asked for me to check on you. You called him last night, witch is fine. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You didn't reply to my texts earlier." Bruce said.
She looked out of her window, for a second she swore she saw a glimpse of Red Hood's helmet from a near by building. "I...I had an unexpected visitor. Before you begin to worry, it wasn't Sharon. I had something came up last night, but it's all good now." Nayara said to him. "I okay Bruce, just a bit tired." Nayara reassured him quietly.
Bruce wasn't convinced though. He was as stubborned as Nayara was. "Nayara, I know you say you are okay, but you don't sound like it. I am not pushing you to tell me now. But are you safe?" Bruce asked her.
"I am safe." Nayara said, smiling at Bruce's words. Then she thought about Jason, wondering if she should tell Bruce about it. She opted against it. Nobody needed to know he had been there, and Bruce had enough on his plate to worry that Jason Todd almost died again last night.
"Look, I promise. I am okay. Just tired." Nayara reassured him with confidence. "Are you okay though? How was patrolling?" She asked him.
Bruce smiled, seeing how Nayara quickly changed the conversation. But he accepted her concern. "Usual." Bruce said to her.
Nayara laughed. "You say that now. And then some thing happens and you wish you hadn't say it." She joked with him. Bruce chuckled from the other end of the line.
"Everyone came out okay as far as I know." Bruce also reminded her. It was Nayara's turn to smile. "I knew you were going to ask." He said to her.
"Well, you know me Bruce. If you are worrying about everyone else who is there to worry about you?" She joked. "Tell Alfred that I am alright, I hope I didn't scared him." Nayara said in thought.
"He is alright." Bruce said to her. "You sure you okay?" He asked one last time.
"I promise." She answered, hearing the concern in his voice. "I know I will be because I got you around." She said to him before saying goodbye.
Bruce hang up the call, but he looked at the wall in thought. "I believe she is alright, like I mentioned." Alfred said entering Bruce's study. Bruce nodded at him. "Yeah, she is alright." He said under his breath.
. . .
The security footage was shown in the Batcomputer. Alfred and Bruce looked at it. There had been an explosion near WayneTech at Wayne Enterprises earlier that day. The two of them stared at how Sharon Carter walked through the carnage while smirking at the camera. Her voice coming clear through the security footage. "Come and find me Swan." Sharon said to the camera before shooting down.
"Not a word too.." Bruce began telling Alfred but someone else cut in.
"When was this?" Nayara asked him. The two men turned to look at the hero.
"This morning." Bruce answered her.
Nayara kept her eyes on her screen. "Weren't you supposed to have meeting this morning? As Bruce Wayne." Nayara recalled, worried his identity was in danger as well.
"He did." Alfred said in thought and Bruce glared at him.
"This hit was personal. I knew it was a matter of time." Nayara muttered under her breath, her brain going over all the possibilities. Then she looked at the wounded, sickening her stomach.
Bruce send her a look, but she ignored it. He could see her figure stuff in her mind, but he regretted the look she gave him. One that had made up her mind. Without looking at him she turned and left in a hurry.
Jadon Todd stopped with Richard down the hall watching Nayara walk past them with a certain look. The two shared a look, watching her go.
. . .
Nayara hit the bag with her boxing gloves. All before sending a high kick. She tried her best to take off the mind off Sharon but it was hard. Her punches were stronger, and stronger and she could feel the hands fill itself with blood.
"You can't kill a bag, you know." Jason Todd said to her. He wore his mask but the helmet was off.
The brunette turned to look at him. "What are you doing here?" Nayara asked him, confused at the sight.
"Came to check in on you. Return the favor you know." Jason said to her.
"I am fine." Nayara said, removing her gloves. She was glad she had bandaged before putting them on, since now she could see the blood on her knuckles.
"You know, a while back Nightwing once asked me to run surveillance and find out something about a woman named Sharon Carter. Couldn't find much though." Jason said to her.
This made Nayara freeze. "He did..wait..." Nayara said, finally turning to look at Jason. Jason noticed the interest she had at the mention of the hero.
"Said it was for a friend who was in trouble, one named Nayara." Jason told her. "I find out she is the same one who helped save my life." Jason added.
"What are you really doing here, J-Red Hood?" Nayara stopped herself from using his real name, but Jason spotted her hesitation.
"I cam came to check in on you. Plus, I heard whispers that this woman who was a ghost, came back to Gotham." Jason said to her. "But what I can't understand is how a ghost like her shows up and causes chaos in Gotham. And let me tell you, we have some lunatics here." Jason added.
"She can fit the profile." Nayara said, knowing where Jason was getting at. He wanted answers, which she wasn't going to give him.
"What is she really to you, Nayara?" Jason asked her. Because nobody wakes up with that sort of villain on your tail. When Jason went to search more on who Nayara was, he too found little information.
Nayara sighed, removing the bandages from her hand. "It's my problem and I am not going to drag you or anyone else into it." Nayara answered.
"It's my business if it's my city." Jason reminded her.
"She wouldn't be bothering anyone else. I have a plan. I will handle her myself." Nayara informed him. Jason sent her a look that he didn't believe she will handle herself well. Part of her knew she had slim chances to live, but what other choice she had.
You can never come back. Peter's words passed through her head. Her looked soured and Jason could see it. There shouldn't be anymore death after this.
"If you get involved you might died like my friend." Nayara said to him. "And I will genuine will hate to see it, so stay out of it. Please." Nayara said to him.
"The friend who used to get in trouble? The one of the picture?" Jason asked her, watching her pick up her stuff.
"Sometimes things must come to an end eventually." Nayara said to him, walking towards the exit. However a sickening feeling washed over Jason seeing her eyes. There was a grief but a goodbye as well. "Take care, Red Hood. You are not so bad." Nayara said with a sad smile.
. . .
Nayara sighed, walking down the halls of Wayne Manor. She was finally able to find Alfred near the kitchen. "Hey, Alfred. I need a favor." Nayara said to him.
Alfred turned to look at her and saw the grief in her eyes. "I wanted to speak with Bruce, but I know he is busy so I came to drop off this." Nayara said to him.
"What will this be?" Alfred asked her.
"A letter. One that is needed. Thanks for everything, Alfred." Nayara answered.
Nayara turned around, leaving the kitchen. Alfred placed the letter away and dialed Bruce's number recognizing the look she had. The one used Bruce normally wore just before facing death itself.
The brunette looked up just to see Richard coming her way. "Look who is around." Richard said with a smile on his face. But all Nayara could see was his death if she didn't do what she needed to do.
"Hi." Nayara said, stopping right on her track so she could meet him half way. She didn't meet his eyes, even if she was dying to take one last look at them. They always bought her so much comfort.
Richard softly grabbed her arm, looking at her in the eyes. "What is really going on? Is this about Sharon?" Richard asked her. "We handle it together. I l...We are friends, friends look after each other." Richard added, almost spilling his secret.
She couldn't lie to him, she had a feeling he will see through it and she was right. "It's my fault she is here causing chaos, Richard." Nayara reminded him. "I will be gone for a few weeks so don't come looking." Nayara asked him.
The brunette hesitated before hugging him. "Thank you for having my back. For caring." Nayara said to him.
"I..." Richard stopped, hugging her back. But it felt like a goodbye he really didn't want to have. Nayara pulled away and looked up to him, seeing how close they were. Richard felt it too, more than her. His breathing stopped for a second, and he reached out to remove the hair from her face.
Nayara gave him a sad smile, accepting the gesture. She was enjoying the last moments with him. The hero who had a very special spot in her heart, not that she was going to tell him. As with Peter, people eventually leave.
What she didn't know was that if Richard were to held her, he will never let her go. For he fell first.
"Look, Nay..." Richard started, feeling this was a goodbye but couldn't muster the courage to tell her. Nayara didn't push him, she just held his hand and gave it one last squeeze before walking away. He will forever regret letting her go, knowing the look on her eyes.
. . .
Nayara met up with Huntress is an alley in Gotham. The brunette knew that if anyone could possibly track Sharon as well as Batman was his own daughter. "You said to keep at a distance and I will." Huntress said to her handling her the location and the burn number she had gotten from Illusion's warehouse.
"Thank you." Nayara said to him "I will be giving this to Batman." Nayara said to her.
The brunette was about to leave, but she knew she still needed one goodbye. "Helena, thank you for being there for me. If you ever need anything, I am just one call away." Nayara said, despite knowing she might not came out of it alive.
Huntress watched her go with a sick feeling to the stomach. She knew those eyes, the ones where you welcome death with open arms, and it worried her. She turned around opposite to Nayara's way and began tracking Nightwing. Something was up and she knew it.
. . .
BEEP....BEEP!
"Sharon, it's me. It's time we finish this. Just you and me." Nayara said throughout the phone, sending her unknown location to the killer.
"I thought you will never ask. I see you finally received my little message." Sharon Carter spat on the phone. Nayara could feel the wicked smile on her.
"I will be waiting for you." Nayara said before handling her phone call. She threw the phone away, before smashing it so that it wouldn't be traceable. "I am done running." Nayara muttered under her breath.
