72 | THE SOLDIER, THE SWAN, AND THE DEAL

NAYARA KNOCKED LOUDLY on the door. She asked Professor X to track the ghost she was looking for. Logan's words going over and over again, about holding the world on her shoulders. So she did the only reasonable thing to do, think of her options.

If she really needed to dig up some dirt about someone. It will be Bucky Barnes who will help her. He was a ghost, someone who went after HYDRA, knew their worst secrets. But most importantly, she knew who he was. Despite being the Winter Soldier, the man that emerge after was one who had morals, grief, and guilt.

She always thought that if she ever did meet him, she will give him a hug and some home made food. Just to show some support that she knew he needed. He hide it from everyone else like Bruce Wayne had done. But Nayara had a knack for seeing beyond the veil.

Which is why now she smiled seeing the door crick a little bit. Bucky Barnes stopped, recognizing Nayara's face through the door. "Hey, Bucky." She said to him. He opened the door more, looking at her. "I just...I came to talk about Steve. I didn't kill him, but I know who did it." She whispered to him.

Bucky Barnes saw she was telling the truth. "That's why you came back..." He said to himself. Nayara lowered her walls a bit and nodded at him. He opened the door even more, letting her inside.

It was then that he saw her carry a bag of food. It was from her favorite places in New York. "I thought you might like some good food." Nayara said with uncertainty.

"Thank you." Bucky quietly accepted. Nayara smiled, seeing a bit of the calm and reserved person she knew come out. "You know who killed him?" Bucky asked her.

Nayara nodded at him. "Yeah, and I need your help." Nayara said to him, taking a seat on one of the spare chairs. She remained, thinking of her next words carefully.

"Why didn't you say anything before?" Bucky asked her.

Nayara sent him an incredulous look. "Because I didn't want you to go and meddle on stuff that might get you killed or brainwashed again. Now that you are free you deserve your second chance." Nayara admitted to him.

Bucky got quiet as he looked down at the food. Nayara knew he was thinking about her words. Hell, she knew him so well even before meeting Steve. "I thought you were after me because you thought that I killed Steve. Because he was your pal, you will take out on me. What I mean by that is a bullet, straight to the chest." Nayara explained to him pointing at her own. "That's why I was scared..." Nayara noted.

The Winter Soldier walked to her, and handled her a set of utensils without saying anything. A sign of peace. But it wasn't until he gave her part of the food that he looked back at her. "Why change your opinion now?" Bucky asked her.

Nayara shrugged at him. "Because I saw all my options, and realized you were the best one. Someone who knew them." Nayara said to him. Then she accepted the food from him.

Bucky scoffed at her. "You are the first person who said that without giving me a judging look." He commented to her. Nayara cracked a small smile.

Nayara shrugged at him. "I know what they did. I am putting faith in the fact that you believe me." She said to him. "I suspect you are wondering if to shoot me or letting me live? Or to trust me?" Nayara said in thought.

There were a couple of minutes of silence. "Steve had pictures of your graduation." Bucky said to her out of the blue. Nayara looked up to him, caught off guard by his words. He had a distant look in his eyes. "He said he was proud of you." Bucky added.

Nayara dried up the tear that was about to fall. "You are not killing me because, Steve loved me?" Nayara said, reading the message.

This shocked Bucky Barnes. Nayara could see it. "You are good at reading people." Bucky admitted looking down at his food.

Nayara accepted the compliment. "Steve was sometimes the brawl, and I was the brains. I just kept it on the down low." Nayara mentioned it to him. "More so now. The last time I spoke...everything spiral out of control. Look where it got Steve...." She said as grief passed her for a second.

She sent a kind look to Bucky. "I didn't want you to get in trouble because of me. I didn't want you to end like Steve." Nayara admitted to him. "I couldn't trust you with the information because what were the chances of you believing me. What if you were to consume by rage that you will blame me and call me a liar." Nayara said in thought.

Bucky looked at her. He knew his mistake. He knew he had freaked her out, and not gave her the benefit of the doubt. "So who did it?" Bucky asked her. Nayara heard him, and nodded at him. But when she took a glimpse of him she knew he had accepted to hear her out.

Nayara smiled as she played with the dog tags on her neck. "Sharon Carter." She whispered under her breath. Bucky noticed she mumbled something. "Sharon Carter killed him." Nayara said a bit louder.

He stopped looking at her. "She was a mole HYDRA put within SHIELD. Hence why Rumlow is looking to get rib of me. He knows, that I am a threat to them." Nayara confessed. "Wouldn't be the first time it has happened. Before Steve was killed, SHIELD took me in, hurt a friend in the process. I was questioned by him... because I knew of their plan to kill Steve." Nayara explained to him as she played with her food.

Bucky moved across the room, pulling up a chair in front of Nayara. "And how did you know?" He asked her. But Nayara didn't answer, instead she looked down on the floor. It was then that he spotted the dog tags shining on her neck below her clothe.

"I was hoping you wouldn't ask." Nayara said to him. She slowly looked up to him. "I wouldn't like to share that secret with you, not yet at least. It stays between me and Steve, it always has. What matters is that I warned Steve about HYDRA....and in Sharon's case....Well it was me and my big mouth." Nayara informed him.

The brunette took a bite of the food, thinking over Bucky's questions. "Is that why she wanted you dead?" He asked her.

Nayara nodded at him. "That is why...they were after me...I think." Nayara said to him. But that wasn't the only reason.

"You were Steve's heart." Bucky corrected her. Nayara snapped her towards him. "You were a target because you were the closest link to Captain America. At least that's what on some of the files." Bucky said to her.

"How bad?" Nayara asked, not masking her panic. There wasn't a need with him. Plus, only an idiot wouldn't be afraid about HYDRA's target on her back.

Bucky ate his food in silence for a minute. "I am so dead. I am so so dead..." He heard her whisper to herself, pressing a hand to her forehead.

He sent her a brief look while she wasn't looking. "What did Sharon know?" Bucky asked her.

Nayara sighed looking down on the food. "I told you she wants me dead. The less you know the better." She warned him.

Bucky stood up, and pointed his fork at her. "You said you and your big mouth." Bucky said to her, quoting her.

"Which is exactly why I am not telling you. I just providing enough information so you don't go ahead and kill me." Nayara said without speaking. Then she swore, looking down on the floor. Bucky remained silent, putting his foot down on the kitchen.

"I am sorry." Nayara said from her place. "You...I....I am genuinely sorry. I am standing in a balance, trying to tell you what I know without putting you at risk. Because I can't stand another death...it took me forever to even come in here. Not because I was afraid of you, but what could happen." Nayara admitted to him.

Bucky finally turned to look at her once more. "Sharon said I was a mole in SHIELD. When I saw her...I was mad, that she was a danger to Steve." Nayara admitted to him. "Every night I wished it was me that day...that I had been the one that took the bullet." She admitted to him.

"I need your help...finding these information about Sharon. I need someone I can count on." Nayara said to him. Bucky extended her metal arm to her, and she accepted it. "Thank you." She softly said to him.

. . .

Nayara fixed her mask as she followed Bucky through the alley to the old HYDRA base at the outskirts of New York City. Nayara had given him a chance to figure out information about where to find Sharon's origin. Her apartment was closely guarded by SHIELD agents, HYDRA to be precise. As Bucky also said by going there, it just a simple picture of the perfect apartment almost as nobody lived there.

Which was the reason why she now followed him up the stairs to the back entrance. As they reached the top of the stairs the quiet was too much. "Is it empty?" Nayara whispered to him.

"Not completely." Bucky said to her.

Nayara wandered if she will be able to keep up with the soldier. She had some training with her powers and hand to hand combat by Steve. But will it be enough for HYDRA soldiers?

She followed him inside stopping once in a while to avoid the local HYDRA Agent. "You know you should wear a mask like you used to. To hide your identity. It's superhero 101." Nayara said to him.

"I am not hero." Bucky pointed out.

"Doesn't mean you could be. Plus, you saved me the other day from getting run over, so technically you are one by definition." Nayara said to him. She got quiet when she spotted an HYDRA agent. Bucky quickly took him down. She took note so that Bruce Wayne could teach her how to do so.

But as he was turning around another agent came and Nayara used her powers this time. This freaked out Bucky, not that he showed it. Nayara had hit the HYDRA agent with water fist. She had carried with her the flask of water that Cisco had given her before departing DC.

"Not a word about it." Nayara said to him as she continued ahead.

They finally ended up in old room with files all over the place. "Someone have been through here." Bucky said to her.

Nayara looked around. "We need to find a file into Dr. Faustus." Nayara said to Bucky thinking a little about the story she never finished.

"Why?" Bucky asked her.

"Sharon saw him. I have a suspicion about how she changed from what she used to be." Nayara said to him. "I will like to believe she wasn't a psychotic woman trying to kill me before all this. Peggy Carter, her aunt, taught lots of things to her. I think she wouldn't be proud to the woman she became." She explained to him.

"How will you know about Peggy?" Bucky asked her.

"Steve mentioned her." Which wasn't a lie, but not the truth behind how she knew. Bucky gave her a blank look, the one he usually wore. "Steve and I were close okay. I know stuff." She admitted.

"Doesn't explain why you knew the plan before it happened." Bucky said to her.

"We all have secrets." Nayara answered, going back to searching.

Nayara sighed, looking into the files in the cabinet. "You are looking for something? What is it?" Bucky asked her.

"Why?" She asked him, keeping her eyes on the files.

"Because you might find it quicker if you tell me." Bucky replied to her, opening one cabinet herself. "I am looking into Dr Faust.....And there is a..." He stopped, seeing names of SHIELD agents and beyond.

Nayara turned to him, seeing him get quiet all of sudden. The brunette gave him a questionary look. "What did you find?" She asked him.

"You got to be more specific." Bucky told her, showing her the files. Nayara stopped, seeing names she didn't know.

"What are these names?" She asked him this time. Bucky pointed at the different SHIELD agents.

The Winter Soldier pointed at the ones he knew. "SHIELD agents, current and former. Mostly current...this one right here worked closely with Fury before he went MIA. This one is constantly questioning Maria Hill." Bucky said to her.

Nayara then put the two and two together, but she found Sharon on their list. "But I thought HYDRA had already infiltrated SHIELD." Nayara said in thought. "Like....way back when..." She said in thought. "I thought..." She stopped herself stepping away for a second.

Bucky shone a light on her face. "You thought what?" He asked her.

Nayara sighed looking down at the folders. "I was looking for Dr. Faustus...he treated Sharon. That is how he brainwashed her....I think." Nayara said to him.

"Yeah, well here we have more than just Sharon." Bucky said going back to the folders.

Nayara swore under her breath. "Sharon was one of SHIELD top operative. I thought it was just her....this is so much bigger." Nayara pointed out. "You will have to dismantle entire SHIELD to go through the whole thing. I doubt they will." Nayara quietly added.

"This will explain why SHIELD wants you. You will be the only one to know the truth." Bucky said to her.

Nayara begin talking pictures of the files, while Bucky continue to rummage through. However they stopped when they hear a strangled yelp. The brunette got quiet and Bucky motioned her to turn off the flashlight.

She followed him quietly, already on their way out. However, Bucky heard the click of the gun and he raised his. Nayara stood behind him. But the voice that she hears surprised her.

Bucky raised his gun at Natasha Romanoff. "You take a shot, I will kill you." Natasha told Bucky. Nayara remained behind him, as Bucky pointed at Natasha. "You are coming with me Barnes...word has it you were involved on Steve's murder." Natasha added.

"Ask her who is telling the lies." Nayara whispered to him, so low Natasha couldn't have heard her.

Bucky sighed looking at her. "Who are you protecting Barnes?" Natasha asked him.

Bucky maintained his hold. "Who is saying that? You or SHIELD?" He questioned her.

"You got someone else here." Natasha replied, but didn't answer the question. Nayara remained silent behind Bucky. She fully knew that Bucky will protect her. Her worry was on how much Natasha was, and she for sure didn't want a Black Window on her trail.

Bucky motioned the brunette to take one step back with his hand. She followed him, one step at the time. "Trying to flee? Barnes come on?" Natasha asked him. "You got to tell me what you know." She added to him.

However, he stopped, and so did Nayara. She saw that he was holding something on one of his hands.

Bang!

Natasha took cover at the explosion that was set off near her. Bucky pulled Nayara to cover and covered her from the debris as it fell around them. "Go!" Bucky told her, before running with her to the nearest exit.

However, Nayara stopped when she saw the fall to deep lake. "Jump. I got you." Bucky told her.

Nayara didn't hesitate to follow his instructions. The water felt cold against her arms, as she sunk deeper and deeper. A metal arm reached down for her, and she grabbed it.

Natasha ears rang as she slowly stood up. She took off running behind her, but by the time they had left; they were gone. Now it was confirmed her worries, there were two ghosts instead of one. The question now was: who was the second.

The two of them sat quietly, catching their breath on the shore. "Sharon Carter killed Steve...." Nayara whispered to him. "It wasn't you....nor SHIELD. It was HYDRA. They got in her head and made her what she is....I warned Steve time and time again and...she finally did it. I wasn't there." Nayara explained to him, her eyes becoming glassy.

"I came back from hiding so that I can know how to defeat her." Nayara admitted to him. Bucky turned to look at the brunette. "And now it almost cost it your life." She quietly added. There was so much regret within her.

Bucky shook his head at the young hero who was Steve's world. The reason he fought until the very end. "No. That it's actually my own fault. Even before you arrived." Bucky said to her.

Nayara let out a small smile, nodding at him. "Now you are going to tell me the whole story?" Bucky asked her.

"Over warm chocolate milk? Sure." Nayara joked with him. The brunette sighed, finally able to catch her breath. "Thank you Bucky." She whispered to him.

. . .

Nayara sighed, finally seating with clean clothe and a cup of warm chocolate milk. She tried to held back the smile, seeing the glare that Logan was throwing Bucky's way. "He will win in a fight with you. You know?" She noted to Bucky who passed her a plate of food. She looked over her shoulder at Logan who was still in one area of the room.

"How will that be?" Bucky silently asked her, not knowing Logan had an very acute hearing. He let out his metal gars from one of his hands.

Nayara held back a laugh while Bucky looked at the light reflecting from them. "You can take a walk...feel the moon and the fresh air." Nayara said to Logan.

The latter walked closer to the table. "Like I will leave you by yourself with this punk." Logan told her.

Nayara set a reassuring look to Logan. "I need to speak with him. Privately, please Logan." She said to him.

Logan growled at Bucky before stepping away. Nayara waited for him to leave to explain her situation with Bucky. "I will say it again...I didn't hurt Steve. Trust me if I could go back in time, I will be the one taking that bullet and not me." Nayara fully admitted. "The world needs him, not me...." Nayara softly said.

"And I don't believe you were ever involved. I don't know if you ever patch things up with him, or didn't....but you were with Sam when I first met you. Sam is good man. He wouldn't be by your side if you were still HYDRA." Nayara explained to him.

The brunette passed a piece of pizza to Bucky, before grabbing her own. "Steve he was my hero and friend. I knew that HYDRA was within SHIELD. They had spies inside, and I warned him. I think he listened. The last time I talked to him before going back into hiding, he...he wanted to make sure I was okay. But I didn't really want to go. I was hiding from Sharon Carter, old pals I suppose...I meant the Winter..." Bucky cut her off, fully knowing what she met.

"I know." Bucky reassured her.

She sighed, taking a bit of her pizza. "She finally caught up to me, you know." Nayara said with a sadden look.

Bucky stopped for a second, hearing those news for the first time. "I walked away with a second chance...but I know what she did to Steve. I need to know how to defeat her. It's my fault this whole mess started in the first place." Nayara explained to him.

Bucky remained quiet, seeing the toll that the brunette had since she had gotten back. "He made us promise. Me and Sam, to look after you when he was gone." Bucky admitted to her. "I checked in with the woman you were last seen with, Emma Frost. But I don't remember anything, just waking up with a terrible headache. You are good at hiding." Bucky commented to her.

"She didn't want me to get hurt. I am a mutant..." Nayara commented it. Bucky made a face still trying to grasp his idea around it. She smiled at the gesture. "Did he really? Asked for you to watch over me, or is that just your hero's heart talking?' She asked him with a small smile.

Bucky smiled at her. "I didn't hear it...but I supposed. Took matters into my own hands." Bucky said to her. "Make amends from the past, I guess." Bucky added satin this food.

"I trust you now. It might not mean much." Nayara quietly admitted to him. But she knew how much it meant for Bucky to hear that.

"Are you going after Sharon by yourself." Bucky asked but it sounded more like an statement.

"No." Nayara lied, but he could see threw it. "I came here to be prepared for whatever she throws at me. It's my fault and I need to fix it. Just...don't tell anyone else. Okay? You already knowing puts you at risk." Nayara admitted.

"I can..." Bucky began but Nayara cut him off.

"Yes. You can and you would." Nayara told him, knowing where he was getting at. "For what is worth? It's finally good to meet you James Buchanan Barnes." She quietly added.

"Nice meeting you too Nayara Lilly." He said back to her. The two of them shook hands.

. . .

The brunette had followed Bucky back to his apartment with a copy of the evidence on a small drive. "Why is Natasha Romanoff coming after you?" Nayara asked him.

"She is after the Winter Soldier." Bucky said opening the door carefully knowing someone was inside. However when he saw Sam Wilson he calmed down.

"Where on earth have you been?" Sam questioned him.

"How did you even got in?" Nayara asked, coming inside the apartment.

Sam raised his hand where he had a spare key. "I copied it without him knowing." Sam said to them.

Nayara let out a small smile. "He properly let you do it. You can't get much pass an ex-assassin and spy." Nayara said to both of them. She closed the door behind her. She raised her hand to show the drive that had the information. "We got some proof about Sharon Carter at an old HYDRA base." Nayara said to him.

Sam raised an eyebrow while looking at Bucky. "HYDRA base?" Sam questioned her.

Nayara shared a look with Bucky. "Oh so now you trust him more than me. Okay, this is going great." Sam said to both of them.

"I do trust you, Sam. But I don't want you to get killed." Nayara explained to him. "Sharon Carter killed Steve Rogers, I will do anything in my power to stop her." Nayara promised him. The two men shared a concern look on the grief on her eyes.

Sam sighed looking at the brunette. "You are playing a dangerous game." He said to her.

Nayara finally looked up to him. "Sam.." She sighed, but he shook his head.

"I can practically see it eat you alive." Sam said to her. He took a step closer to her, taking a closer look to her. "If this woman killed Steve, you need to be careful. Let me..." He began but Nayara shook her head.

"Sam, I can't have your death on my hands. I already have Steve's. I will handle this myself." Nayara pointed out to him. "I know you meant well, but...this is why I am keeping things to myself." Nayara warned him.

"It wasn't your fault." Sam remind her. Nayara looked down on the floor, from a distance Bucky could see the toll it has taken her. She took deep breath by herself as she walked down the hall. Bucky against Sam's words followed her, and as he turned the corner he saw her scream and punch the wall before dropping down on the floor. Tears fell down her face as she brushed the hair off her face.

. . .

Bucky watched Nayara skillfully wrapped her bruised knuckles. He studied the brunette, and the clear circle below her eyes. He finally saw the toll it has all taken on her. "You need to ice them." Bucky called out to her softy.

"I know." Nayara sniffed, hiding her pain like a pro. She turned on her blank mask on so he wouldn't see it.

"Lilly?" Bucky called out to her.

Nayara finally looked up to him. "You can call me Nayara or Nay, Barnes." Nayara corrected him.

"They would have killed Steve either way." Bucky corrected her. "You can't blame yourself for it. You weren't there." He warned her.

"I warned him, Barnes. I warned Steve to be careful with SHIELD, with HYDRA. With Sharon Carter and she took off and won. She took him away from me! Now, she is going to target someone else unless I intervene." Nayara said to Bucky with a calm and collected voice, but her anger was clear in her voice. Then she sighed.

"I wasn't supposed to exist, Steve was. That's the difference." Nayara said to him before stepping out of the room of the safe house. "The world does't need me, not really..." She finished closing the door behind her. Her words were heavy in Bucky's heart.

. . .

Nayara sighed, entering Stark Tower. She spotted Mat Murdock calmly seating near the entrance. She slowly walked towards him. "Mr. Murdock?" She asked, and he stood up to shake her hand. Her hands shook slightly. "Why are we here?" She whispered to him.

"It said to read the will on a secure location. Steve had asked it to be at Stark Tower." Matt Murdock said to her.

Nayara frowned even more. "He...what? That doesn't make sense, it has been attacked before." Nayara muttered under her breath. Then she wondered why he will choose this place instead of the school, or someplace else. Less exposed to the public eye.

"My guess he wanted a control environment enough to keep it under wraps. Give you some privacy. Not better security than Stark Tower." Matt commented to her. Nayara sighed, shaking her head. "It should be, hopefully easy." Matt added to her.

"You know if they were giving you trouble to reserve a spot, I would have helped you. I got Pepper Potts' phone on the line. If needed." Nayara said to him. Then she spotted the lawyer that had given her the will of Steve Rogers.

"Mrs. Lily, Mr. Murdock, good to see you." The lawyer said to her. "Please follow me. We will discuss it all once inside." The lawyer pointed out as security led them in.

Nayara looked over her shoulder, at the people in the hall. Matt saw she wasn't following him, so he slowly turned his head backwards. "Nayara?" He called out to her and she snapped back. "You okay?" He whispered to her as they walked together.

"Yeah...." She said, without a single drop of confidence.

. . .

The silence was eating her alive. They stood in one of the top floors of Stark Tower. At an office that she thought was too cold for her liking. Matt turned to Nayara' who was tapping her shoe to the floor. "You sure you are okay?" He whispered to her.

Nayara mumbled a small 'yes'. But Matt wasn't so sure. Her heart rate was through the roof, and she had clear signs of panic. "Can you hear my heart about to burst?" She asked him, mocking him.

"I can sense it." He lied to her. But Nayara knew the truth. "You keep looking over your shoulder." He pointed out to her.

"I am just....I am a beacon for trouble. Matt....Murdock." She quietly said, realizing she called him by the first name.

He sent her a small smile. "Matt is just fine." Matt pointed out to her. Nayara smiled. "I prefer it anywhere. Mr. Makes me sound old." He joked to her. It eased her worries. She let out a small laugh in return.

The lawyer looked ahead at the group. "You, Matt Murdock form Murdock and Nelson will be representing Mrs. Lilly? Correct?" The lawyer asked him.

Matt Murdock nodded at him. "Yes." He said to him.

"Okay, then let's started." The lawyer said to him. "First and foremost, Captain Rogers stated that all his assets will go solemnly to his only family member, Nayara Lilly. This includes his shield, and all rights to the image of Captain America, and museum. For her to see fit how the story and his assets are passed down for future generations." The lawyer said to both of them.

As the lawyer continued to list the inheritance of her, Nayara zoned out a little for a second, the pressure of the past weeks increasing. Steve had trusted her with the shield, with the symbol of Captain America, and so much more than she had expected.

"Nayara..." Matt whispered, catching her attention.

Nayara looked up to him. Then he nodded to the lawyer who repeated the words. "Miss Lilly will also, if she sees the need for a new Captain to arise, choose the next carrier of the shield." He said to her.

Nayara was surprised at his words. "Wait...what if...like the replacement? He is dead and wants me to find his replacement?" Nayara said in confusion.

The lawyer looked at Matt Murdock. "If I may?" The lawyer called out looking to Nayara. "I believe Steve Rogers wanted you to carry on his legacy. Wether it is you who carried the shield, or select the person who would. He believed you are an excellent judge of character." The lawyer explained to her.

Nayara huffed at the pressure. "Yeah, no pressure." Nayara mumbled under her breath.

"Can we take a second?" Matt asked the lawyer. They nodded at him. Matt led Nayara out of the room. The brunette almost looked like she was about to pass out. "I will get you some water, come on." Matt said to her.

Nayara shook her head. "I thought...oh my god...choosing...I can't....He trusted me with everything." Nayara said to herself.

Matt a hand over her shoulder. "One thing at the time. Okay?" He remained her. Nayara nodded in return.

However as Nayara was finally able to calm down, a voice spoke. "I hope I am not late. I heard there was will to be discussed." Tony Stark said, opening the door.

Tony Stark took a seat near to Matt. Nayara's heart sank. Will he want the shield back? The brunette saw Matt nudge her shoulder, cautioning her to not panic. "Mr. Stark, the reading of the will of Steve Rogers is for Nayara Lilly who will be inhering all his assets." The lawyer pointed out.

"I will like to participate on it." Tony said to him. "Captain Rogers left some things with the Avengers and I will like to know how I can be of any support." He quickly added looking at Nayara.

"Can he do that?" Nayara whispered to Matt.

"If there is nothing that it states only the hearing parties can be present." Matt whispered to her. "But he might be allowed to stay since some of the assets that Captain America would have obtained like his room in the Avengers mansion, or equipment might be a grey area. Unless it was proven that it was given to him." Matt added to her.

Nayara made a look of annoyance, as it was the stupidest thing she had heard. Matt smiled, seeing the silence she had. "But what about SHIELD? They stick their noses were they shouldn't." Nayara pointed out to him.

"We will deal with them. Just keep your calm and don't snap at them if they do show up." Matt whispered quietly to her.

Nayara scoffed at him. "You know, I am very well-behaved. Even when I am annoyed." She whispered back to him. "But you know I am right? Deep down. You know." She muttered to him, with a unamused look thinking of SHIELD.

"Yes, you are." Matt said but frowned when he heard something. Multiple voices...the clicking of guns. Nayara saw him shift and zone out for a second. She knew what it meant.

Then she heard a yell down the hall. One she recognized. "Hey! This is private property! Meeting in in place! All personal out, including you guys." The voice of Happy was heard.

Matt rose up from his seat with Tony. Then there was when Natasha Romanoff appeared with Maria Hill along with SHIELD agents. "What's going on?" Natasha whispered aggressively to Tony Stark.

"I didn't call them." He said to her before turning to Maria Hill, who was already watching Nayara Lilly with careful eyes.

"We have some questions for you, Nayara Lilly." Maria Hill said to her.

"I think we can do this another time. No, Hill?" Tony asked him.

"You can ask my lawyer." Nayara answered, looking at Matt.

Matt Murdock raised his hand, as if to shake Maria Hill's hand. "I am sure we will love a wonderful discussion once we finish this hearing." Matt said to them.

"What kind of hearing?" Natasha asked.

"The will of Captain Rogers." The lawyer informed them. Natasha looked at Nayara and the brunette paled a little. The ghost who had disappeared before the war. A cross of brief recognition passed through her face but she kept quiet.

"It's a private matter. I think we can resolve it later yes." Tony said to Maria. "Unless you too desperate for that forsaken shield that you reprieve her of inheriting." Tony snapped to Maria, making it clear where he stood now.

"I think they have a point. You don't want to make a scene." Natasha whispered to Maria Hill.

Maria motioned to everyone draw back. "I hope you know what you are doing, Tony." Natasha whispered to him before leaving with the rest of SHIELD. But not before watching Nayara from a distance.

"Did you know they were coming?" Nayara whispered to Tony. Wondering if that is why he showed up.

Tony waved her off. "No. Although, I wouldn't run it pass them. They have been trying to call on a few stuff from the Avengers. Said that it was part of the state owned, etc. Captain America." Tony informed her.

"Steve Rogers was a human being." Nayara muttered under her breath. "Not like they owned Captain America, but you know how people love to take ownership of other successes." Nayara added with bitterness. "But if the issue is the shield, it technically was a gift from Howard Stark, your father, to him. The only ones who actually own vibranium and have a say in this will be the Wakanda leader T'Challa." Nayara explained.

"Regardless of what SHIELD will or will not do, the pressing matter is the will of Captain Steve Rogers." Matt Murdock cut in. "The more time we spend dwelling, the less time we have before the time closes, and the state does get it." Matt reminded her.

. . .

Nayara's hand wavered over the paper. It was almost like it was mocking her, over and over again. Tony looked up to her, seeing the fear and grief in her eyes. As if she was staring down at Steve Roger's ghost. Matt put a hand on her shoulder as the brunette thought about not signing it at all.

"I can't...he is..." Nayara stopped herself from saying it. All she could hear was Bruce's words, of owning it, the grief, the guilt but also the love. "I can't sign this..." Nayara whispered to Matt Murdock. She was panicking.

"He is gone." Tony spoke up. Nayara turned to look at him. "He is gone is there is nothing either of us can do about it." Tony said looking into her eyes. "But we can ensure that SHIELD or anyone else picks up his name and god forbid use him as some propaganda for their own aims." Tony reminded her.

Nayara then saw under it all the grief he too held. "We both know what will happened." Tony said to her.

"I don't want him to be dead." Nayara admitted, finally speaking out the words. "I don't even....I have never even sign a contract and...what if..." She slowly panicking even more.

Matt sat on the table next to her. "Trust me?" He whispered to her. Nayara nodded before mumbling a simple 'yes'. "Mr. Smith can verify for you this, but Steve Rogers wanted, and believed you for you to carry his legacy."

"What if he isn't dead?" Nayara questioned them. Tony sent a regretful look to Nayara.

"Nay..." Tony sighed, catching her attention. She sighed, knowing the truth.

"Okay." She sighed, accepting it.

Above everything else, it is all boils down to a simple truth." Matt said to her. "Steve Rogers loved you. You were his family, and someone he trusted to inherit his work, his image. Someone who he gave freedom to choose how you wanted him to be remembered in halls, to keep or throw away what you wanted." Matt explained to her.

Nayara sighed, looking down at the paper. Then she picked up her pen once more, and signed it. Matt finally stood up, and patted her shoulder. Nayara held his hand. "Thank you." She thanked him. Then she slowly looked up to Tony. "Thank you," She said to him too.

Tony nodded at her before slowly standing up. "Just...let JARVIS know when you want to access the stuff, pick up what you want and all...ummm...he...made a room for you in case you came back." Tony tried to explain to her. "I just wanted to see if I could help here. I see you got it solved with your lawyer...who by the way I have never heard from before." Tony said, changing his tone when referring to Matt. Nayara held back a laugh, knowing that it was

"You can stay, if you want." Nayara said finally catching up to him at the door. "Thank you, Tony." She added.

Matt followed to where she stood, getting ready to leave when he stopped.

BOOM!

Nayara was pulled to the ground by Matt Murdock just as the explosion happened. The brunette swore, her panic causing to some of the pipes to explode down the hall. The fire system went off.

Tony turned, helping the lawyer up. "Matt, Matt!" Nayara called out, but he was't responding. He was holding his ears. Nayara swore, knowing the explosion had affected him. Slowly, she helped him up.

Through the crowd of smoke, something took a hold of her hair, pulling her backwards. Nayara let out a scream, and elbowed her attacker but flinched when she hit a armor. "Tony!" Nayara yelled, before he could blast him someone stepped in.

Nayara fell to the ground, turning around to see Bucky taking a hold of Crossbones. Who had a full body armor and metal arms. She wanted to help but she couldn't use her powers, not with all the cameras. SHIELD will know its her.

"Go." Bucky said to her before holding a punch from Rumlow with his metal arm. Nayara took off to where Matt laid and helped him through the chaos. Ahead there were agents of SHIELD, but not the ones that had come with Maria.

"How many do we have eleven? I think we can manage." Tony Stark said to her.

"I need to help Matt. Plus, I can't use my powers here. They will know." Nayara whispered to Tony, not caring Matt heard at all. Not that he was hearing that well with the piercing sound in his ear.

Nayara saw Happy shooting some agents with back up. And she made her way to him, before helping Matt out to safety.

. . .

"I am so sorry." Nayara said once they were outside. Matt shook his head. "I mean it. I have like...a magnet for trouble. I am not kidding." She noted.

Matt smirked at her. "Just know, that if SHIELD does act up, you still got rights." He said to her.

"You know they are SHIELD, right?" She asked him unsure. Then he just smirked even more. Nayara let out a small laugh.

"I always wanted to go against them in the court of law." Matt said to her. "I extend my proposition. I will like to continue being your lawyer. Advisor if needed be." He added.

Nayara let out a delighted laugh, nodding along. "Okay. I will like that very much." She noted to him, and they shook their hands. "I am so glad you have told me, because honestly I was terrified about having to find a new one." She added and the two of them smiled.

. . .

Nayara knocked on the door to Bucky's apartment with a set of hot coffee. Bucky opened the door and Nayara smiled. "I bought a thank you present, for what happened." Nayara said to him.

"Come on in." Bucky said, letting her pass. He looked down the hall and closed the door.

"Did Tony see you?" Nayara asked him.

"He did, but I was already on my way out." Bucky answered.

"We might have a problem thought, especially me. I think Natasha Romanoff knows I am up to something. She kept watching me from a distance." Nayara said to him.

"It's not you. It's me she is me after." Bucky said to her. "Especially after I came out of hiding after Steve's death. Don't worry too much about it." He reminded her.

"But she used to be HYDRA like you. I don't think she is in their side now, but I know her past." Nayara spoke before she could think. This earned her a look of suspicion from Bucky.

A silence fell on them, and Nayara hoped she could still get help from him. However, her eyes landed on the communist red star.

Nayara looked at the red star that was still on his arm. "I could paint it over. The star I mean." Nayara pointed out.

Bucky gave her an blank look, but his eyes seemed unsure. "So that you don't have a reminder of your past." Nayara explained. "I am no artist, but I can manage a good shield." Nayara confessed.

"I don't deserve a shield." Bucky added.

Nayara shrugged at him. "Steve thought the same at one point. I don't see why not give it a try. But only if you want to." Nayara said to him.

"Alright." He accepted.

. . .

Nayara sighed, walking inside the school. Logan stopped, looking at her. Then he sniffed. She knew what that meant. "Kaput. Yep." Nayara said, pointing at her hair.

Logan shook his head. "Stark Tower?" He asked her.

"It's all over the news I believe. It was Rumlow again, but Barnes was there." Nayara said to him. "SHIELD wants me for questioning but my lawyer handled the situation." Nayara added.

"Who?" Logan asked her.

Nayara smiled. "Matt Murdock." Nayara answered.

"He is my lawyer." Logan said to her. Nayara held back a laugh.

"Why would you need a lawyer?" She said as she attempted to hide her amusement. The grief leaving her eyes for a second. Logan didn't say anything else. "Please, come on. You can't leave me up like that." She said in thought.

Logan carried on walking and she followed him.
