66 | THE POWER WITHIN

TWO WHOLE WEEKS. That was how long Nayara had spend at Kent farm. Two whole weeks without any disturbance. It stressed her to the core. The nightmares were getting worse. The voice of the Queen Sapphire calling her name, telling her about the powers that could be hers only if she chooses them. The key part was choosing them, which is why Nayara had decided to avoid that ring for good. The queen has to get tired of waiting at some point, right?

The brunette sat outside during one of her breaks. It was a less busy day, and now it was her time to finally think or at least try to. She needed to think of a strategy against Sharon Carter. She needed to restore order to DC and bring her back to Marvel before she created even more chaos than needed. It was her responsibility after all.

Her thought was broken by Conner who stopped in front of her with a cup of coffee. Nayara looked up to him. "Good morning." She said to him. There were bags under her eyes. The nightmares had gotten worse. However Peter had called her every single day to check up on her, which just made her harder for her to think of a way to sent him back. Barry had called her the other day, telling her that Peter refuses to leave without her. Even now that they were not exactly dating, he still wouldn't leave her.

Nayara rested her head against the back of the front porch. She drank the coffee silently. "Are you alright?" Conner asked her.

"I am just tired." Nayara informed him.

"I can take over the work." Conner said to her.

"I wouldn't want Martha to think I am lazy." Nayara joked with him.

Nayara then heard the sound of something breaking. The brunette stood up quickly and walked to the front with Conner by her side. In front of the house were a set of young male adults, all around her age. One of them saw her and whistled at her.

The brunette put down her cup and looked at them. Next to their feet was the Kent mailbox. Nayara looked the one who had whistled at her. He had a bat on his hand. "What do you think you are doing vandalizing some else's house?" Nayara said to them with a slight glare. Her voice leaving out all softness she sometimes carried with her.

The guy who had whistled at her smirked. "Legend says this house is haunted." He said. Nayara clenched her fist trying to contain her indignation.

Conner stepped up behind her. "If it's haunted why destroy it? You don't want to be haunted by a ghost." Conner said to him. Nayara let out a small laugh at Conner's point, which was true.

The guy got annoyed at the laugh. Nayara walked to the boy standing right on his face. "You either walk away, or I am calling the cops. This is vandalized." Nayara told him.

He waved the baseball bat on his hand. "Well, I don't think you want to fight with me." The boy said to her. Nayara put her hand out, stopping Conner from interring further. The brunette let a small laugh shaking her head.

Nayara tried to keep her calm, fully knowing she couldn't draw attention to herself. Then she saw him walked to the front porch and hit the windows with his bat. "What you going to do it about it baby." He said. There were other two mocking her. Nayara was very tempted to break his own car but then she thought of a better way.

She walked to him, smiling slightly at him. "Nothing. I mean, it's just a silly job I have here anyways." Nayara told him sweetly. Then she sent him a cheeky smile. "You are making me a favor. I tend to reward people who make me favors." She added sending him a wink.

The guy seemed to fall right on her trap. Nayara pressed a hand to his chest. "So what's the name of the sweet man who I owe the favor?" Nayara said to him. He smiled at her. "You tell me your name and I might consider a prize." She added before leaning towards him. The guy was breathless.

Conner stood on the sidelines completely confused. "Liam Smith." The guy replied to her. His friends who were in his car whistled, congratulating him for the supposed win. "Where is my prize?" He said to her, putting his hand on her hip.

Nayara smiled sweetly at him before pushing him roughly to the floor. He fell backwards, looking up to her. "Hey you said-" He started, but Nayara cut him off.

"I said I might." Nayara said to him, her flirtatious voice completely gone. Then he stood up, putting the bat up into the air to hit her. However she was quicker. She moved just as he was about to hit her. Then she kicked him in the chest when he was recovering. Nayara then moved to him and kicked him on his family jewels. Then she removed the bat from his hands.

His two friends left the car and advanced towards her. "I will recommend you sit in the car." Nayara warned them.

Nayara sent a look to Conner. One of them had taken the bat that she had pushed away. Then he made an advance towards Nayara and Conner stepped in. He did not even flinch at the hit. He roughly took the bat away from them and broken it in half.

The two friends looked at each other. "What if we split? You get one, I get one?" Nayara asked him with a small smile and mischief in her eyes. Conner did not get to reply before Nayara started to fight one of them.

The brunette was quick to deliver one quick punch. That made the other guy stumble. He tried to catch her but she was quick to draw some space between them by racing to the front porch. He raced towards her, and she moved just in time to see him crash against the stairs of the front porch. Nayara lifted him off before throwing him towards the car.

However, the one that she had tricked had stood up behind her. Nayara heard Conner warning and moved down just in time to avoid a punch. Now this were normal people. They were not HYDRA nor Sharon Carter, so of course she was glad that Steve's training had helped her deal with this kind of situation.

Nayara smirked at him, raising her fist. "I can do this whole day. Your choice." Nayara warned him. The guy - who had more pride than he should - rose his fist once more. Conner was going to help her but she raised her hand. "Let's make this a fair fight." She warned Conner. The brunette smirked at her opponent.

One of the friends - the one Conner had fought - was already on the ground next to their car. The other was still recovering from Nayara's hit to the face. There was just this stubborn one left.

Nayara avoided one punch, then used his momentum to make him fall to the ground. He stood up, but did not see Nayara kick his legs, making him stumble. He stood up again tackled Nayara to the ground. Nayara tried to push the guy away from her, but lacked the force. He had pinned her to the ground.

However, she raised her knee with so much force that he had let her go. Nayara stood up and looked at him dead in the eye. "Run." She said to him. The guy stood up once more. He was about to punch Nayara but she beat him to it. Two good punches and he was out.

His friend helped him up. Nayara looked at them with a glare. The guy who was know clearly defeated got inside his truck. His friends followed and they took off. Nayara relaxed a little seeing them leave.

Then she turned to Conner. "I hate bullies." She said to him. Conner let out a small smile, which she quickly returned.

Nayara followed Conner inside the house. "Split? Really?" Conner asked her. Nayara laughed lightly at him.

The brunette shrugged at him. "I wanted the fight to be fair." She answered.

. . .

Nayara said on the kitchen table, looking down at her hand that was on a bowl of ice. Nayara had hurt her knuckles while fighting. Conner sat opposite to her, already with the bandages at hand.

"You know how to fight." He pointed to her.

Nayara nodded at him. "A friend of mine taught me how. Just in case I needed to defend myself." Nayara said to him. "He is dead now." She softly added.

The door opened and closed. The two of them walked to the hall to see Mrs.Kent look at the broken glass. "I am sorry. Some guys came in...they just wanted to wreck havoc....Also I just wanted to apologize because...I fought them off." Nayara said to her. "Just in case you get into trouble with the Sheriffs office." She added.

Mrs.Kent sent her a big smile. "Good." She said to her.

Nayara looked at her. "What do you mean by good, Mrs.Kent?" Nayara asked her.

Mrs.Kent turned to the young hero. "Because you defended my property didn't you?" Mrs.Kent said to her. "You could have ignored it, but you didn't. And don't worry about the damage because it's nothing that can't be fixed." Mrs.Kent said to her. Nayara relaxed a little at her words. "We could always go tomorrow to pick anything that needs to be repaired. I needed a new mailbox anyway." She added to her.

Conner and Nayara shared a look, and the both heroes smiled.

. . .

Nayara was in town with Mrs.Kent. However she felt weird being overexposed. It was back at her looking over her shoulder especially after the fist fight she just had. She felt awful for Mrs.Kent.

Now they were already on their way to another stop near the edge of the town when she saw a woman pass her by. Nayara felt her heart clench when she saw the known face of Illusion. No matter where she ran, she would be found. She remained quiet, trying to avoid scaring Mrs.Kent.

Nayara sent a quick text to Bruce who seemed like the only one who knew where she was. Also she knew he would be more discreet than Barry. Then she sent a warning text to Conner to make sure Mrs.Kent was safe at home when she returned.

The heroine got out of the car. Her eyes danced to Illusion who was ahead. The brunette looked around her, there were civilians around the area. All whom will be affected by her. If she didn't make the right decisions.

Nayara walked to the Illusion. "You want me." Nayara said to her.

Illusion sent her a smirk. "You can't outrun your destiny. You have been chosen." She said to her. The woman had practiced those words precisely like Zelda - her employer had told her - only one thing was missing for her next step and it was for Nayara to accept it. Accept the power she was given. Accept the Sapphire Queen.

However, Nayara was tired of this whole ordeal and she was not going to give up. Nayara then turned around and ran. She ran quickly away from all the people. After a few minutes of running she knew she lacked the stamina to continue, but there was an evil woman following her.

Nayara stopped, hiding behind some abandoned buildings. She looked around her, just to see Illusion taunting her. "Come out dear." Illusion said to her. "You will be Queen and your fears will be gone." Illusion added.

Nayara looked around her, trying to spot something she could use to her advantage. Then she saw it: the water tank. Just close enough for her to use her powers against her. She closed her eyes concentrating. Then she saw it, the grey smoke coming towards her. However, before it could reach her the water tank broke, letting all the water come out.

The sound startled Illusion so much that she turned around, just to be meet with a whole full of water. Nayara stood up from her hiding spot looking at the woman who was on the floor. "I am no running from you anymore. I got enough nightmares of my own." Nayara said to her. She used the water to create sphere around her. Then by relaxing the hands the sphere froze. Nayara had done it. She had contained the threat with her powers. Illusion smacked her hands against it, but nothing.

. . .

Nayara sat now back in private plane back to Central City. Her eyes closed slightly as she leant on the place. "Thanks for the flight back home." Nayara said to Bruce Wayne who sat at the other side of the plane. "Is Mrs.Kent okay?" Nayara asked him.

Bruce nodded at her. "She is all good. No problem what so ever." Bruce told her.

Nayara nodded at him. "I was shocked it wasn't Sharon." Nayara said to him. Then opened her eyes once more. Then she passed a hand through her wounded knuckles. "Did the authorities took the woman who attacked?" Nayara asked Bruce.

"She is on her way to the DEO." He answered.

"At least that is one less thing to worry about." Nayara replied. Nayara looked out of the window. Her minds went back to Sharon, and how difficult it has been to deal it on her own.

"At least you got enough rest?" Bruce asked her.

But Nayara's eyes said the opposite. Her nightmares just had gotten worse. "A bit." Nayara said to him.

"Still having nightmares?" He asked her.

"They are worse." Nayara admitted to him. "Most of the time is me loosing the people I care about, but others time there is something else lurking in the shadows." Nayara explained to him.

"What do you see?" Bruce said looking at the tired brunette.

"A woman, asking me to accept some kind of power." Nayara answered. "Somehow, when I use it, I am able to stop Sharon, but it feels too much." Nayara added.

"Maybe you are afraid embracing your powers." Bruce said to her.

"But if I already accepted them, why do I keep having nightmares?" Nayara questioned him. "You said it yourself, this might be my only advantage against Sharon. I know. But this dreams...they... forget it." Nayara commented to him. But there was more to those dreams than one might think.

"Just remember, they are just nightmares." Bruce reminded her.

Nayara's thoughts were broken off by Bruce. "But your training paid off." Bruce said to her. Nayara smiled at him, knowing it was his way of congratulating her.

"Yeah, but I am still not sure about Illusion. I know she is with the DEO now, but....it was something she said that just....it struck a cord." Nayara told him. "It was weird, she said that I will be Queen and my fears will be gone. She seemed so confident in her words." Nayara said to him.

"They say a lot of stuff to get under your skin." Bruce mentioned to it.

"But Queen of what? I mean with Sharon I know what I did. I know her. But Illusion, what does she even want? How much has Sharon even told her about me?" Nayara said, getting carried away by her worries.

"One problem at the time." Bruce reminded her.

"Right." Nayara replied. "One problem at the time." She said under her breath.

Bruce saw Nayara's eyes didn't change. They were clouded with worry. "Nayara?" Bruce called out to her. Nayara turned and knew the look.

The brunette sighed. "I thought about Sharon. I thought that maybe I could come up with something. An amazing plan where I could defeat her, but I am still in square one." Nayara said to him.

"We will solve it together, Nayara." Bruce told her.

"That's the thing Bruce, I don't know if we can." Nayara warned him.

. . .

It was official, Nayara was going to get herself her own apartment. Away from Barry and Iris so that they would not get hurt. She couldn't bare to put all this burden to Bruce back in Gotham either.

The brunette opened the apartment door to Barry's. She walked to her room and sat on her bed looking up. She could give herself to Sharon. That would stop her from destroying half the city right? Once she was done with her, it was the end. There was nothing else for the villain here on DC. Barry could take her back and all their problems will be solved.

At the corner of the room Steve's shield sat there. Nayara looked at it, quietly seating there. There was sudden knock on the door. "I...I heard you were back." Peter said from the other side of the door.

"You can come in." Nayara called out to him. Peter entered the room and stood at the edge of the bed. Nayara stood up from the bed and looked at Peter. He could see the bags under her eyes.

"You look tired." Peter said to her. The girl he loved with all his heart had remained quite about the threats of her life and he could see how she had begun to close off once more.

Nayara sent him a defeated smile. "I haven't been sleeping well. Too much on my mind." Nayara replied. Then she patted the space next to her bed. Peter took a seat and then he hugged her. Nayara relaxed in his arms feeling safe. She had missed that, the warmth. "You have to go back, Peter. I told you I have a way to send you back." Nayara whispered to him.

Peter pulled away, looking at her. "I am not leaving you. Not while Sharon is roaming around." Peter told her.

Nayara looked up to him with a tired look. "What if you get hurt?" Nayara whispered to him. Peter brushed the hair off her face. "What if it's my fault? What if I can't save you? Just like I couldn't save Steve?" Nayara said to him.

Peter kept an arm around her shoulders. "I can't loose you Peter." Nayara admitted to him. Peter kissed the top of her head, and Nayara leant towards his touch.

Peter leant his head on top of hers. "I am not leaving you." Peter said to her.

Nayara let out a small laugh. "You are so stubborn." Nayara whispered to him. Peter chuckled at her.

"Well so are you. So, I guess we could be stubborn together." Peter said to her.

That same night when Barry went to check up on Nayara, she saw the brunette sleeping soundly next to Peter with his arm protectively around her.

. . .

The following morning, Nayara sat next to Peter on the sofa. They were brainstorming what their next steps will be. They priority was Sharon, the one they couldn't control. The brunette had been thinking all morning how to get rip off her but it seemed as if her mind was completely blocked.

Peter looked at how Nayara mumbling stuff under her breath. "You said you could sent me back, why don't you sent her back?" Peter asked her.

Nayara turned to Peter. "And what get rip of the problem? She will most likely find a way to find me again. She isn't going to stop until I am dead." Nayara explained to him.

Her mind went back to her last encounter with her. It seemed as Lex was working closely with her, but he was too selfish on his hope of getting Batman to stop her from anything. Nayara looked at the evidence board in front of her. Contain Lex? Yeah but then he will be out just like when you put Joker on Arkham Asylum. Just give it a couple of weeks and he is out. Nayara thought.

Peter looked at Nayara. "What did you do last time?" Peter asked her. Nayara was confused at the question. "What did you do to stop her last time?" Peter asked her again.

Nayara then looked at the board. "Nothing. Nothing at all. I mean when she got me it was Tony and Steve that got me out once, then it was Flash who saved me from falling off a building. I have never been able to stop her." Nayara explained to Peter. "I...I had warned Steve about her, that was why she got so mad at me and wants my head on a stick!" Nayara added.

Peter then stood up from the couch. "Okay, so you knew something was up but she wasn't expecting nobody else to know. You were one step ahead of her." Peter said.

"But I admitted it to her face, Peter." Nayara told him. "That is why is this whole mess started. All because I couldn't possibly keep my mouth shut." Nayara added.

"Then think about that day when I was fighting the Green Goblin, or Rhino. You knew what to do." Peter added to her. Nayara looked at him tiredly. "You said that you read about me a lot. Right?" He asked her.

Nayara looked down. "Yeah, that's how I knew about your villains. But I don't know about Sharon. I never read about her." Nayara explained to him.

Peter then smiled at her. "But that is the thing, you know stuff she doesn't know." Peter pointed out. Nayara listened carefully. "You said you knew a lot about my world right? Then use that. Nobody knowns what you know. It's like your own secret super power." Peter explained to her.

Nayara looked up to him. Peter the pointed at himself. "You knew I was Spider-Man. You knew that Sharon was going to do something bad. She attacks because she felt threatened by you. HYDRA feels threaten by you. That should make you proud." Peter said. He walked closer to her. "Forget that you are mutant, take that out and-" Peter stopped being cut off by Nayara.

"And I am nobody. Without my powers I can't help people." Nayara said to him. Then she stopped, thinking back at the collar that Sharon threatened her with. She wondered if what she would do if it came true. "Even that can't help me." Nayara mumbled.

Peter sighed. "You don't see it. Don't you?" Peter asked her. Nayara remained silent. "Your knowledge is power! I mean think about Steve. He is good with strategies." Peter said to her.

"Yeah, but he is also a super-soldier who can run extremely fast. I tried to out run an attack and felt out of breath after a few minutes. I can't out run anybody." Nayara replied. Peter moved closer to her. "I never read that much about Sharon. I just knew that she was going to destroy Steve because she was part of HYDRA." Nayara added.

Peter then looked at her. "But she doesn't know you, does she? You have your own power within in. Your knowledge....Nayara you have it." Peter said to her. He took Nayara's hand in his. "You are incredible smart. You can solve problems in a blink of an eye." Peter added. Nayara sighed, looking at him.

Nayara remained quiet. Then she thought back at the time she met with Sharon. The blonde wasn't expecting her to know about her plan to kill Steve. She threw everything off balance. Sharon now wanted her and only her. Maybe Peter wasn't so far off about the idea of using her knowledge. She did know what kind of person Sharon was. She knew what had to be done. Now the question was: how will she do it? Will Peter or anybody else be a risk? What happens if she died in the process, Peter will be stuck there forever. What will the cost of handling herself to Sharon?

. . .

Nayara stood quietly on the kitchen as she made herself some food. Peter had gone off to save somebody. She would have gone with him, but she knew she had to lay low for a while. At least while she planned what she will do to Sharon. Maybe that will cause the blonde enough anger to get out of her own hiding and search for her.

The brunette saw the Bruce's text on her phone, followed by some replies from other real states. She needed to find her own apartment. She needed to keep Barry and Iris safe. Therefore she had to create some distance.

The brunette walked back to her plate and took the phone out. She opened Bruce's text message:

Gotham still stands if you ever need a place.

Nayara smiled at it and worked a reply

Thanks, but I really don't want to impose.

Trouble follows where I go. I am tired of

people getting hurt because of me.

You already got enough on your plate with

petty criminals and Arkham Asylum fugitives.

A couple of minutes passed before she heard a reply....

Just keep it in mind in case something happens.

Nayara smiled at the text, shaking her head. Never in her lifetime did she thought she will be invited back to Gotham. She had known for ages that Bruce took responsibility on whatever happened in Gotham. She knew the bat had a heart.
