51 | UNKNOWN FATE
BARRY SAT QUIETLY next to the medical bed where the young brunette laid. There cuts on her face and a few parts of her arms were covered. His eyes were following slowly asleep, due to his endless nights staying late saving the city while still looking after Nayara.
A hand on his shoulder made him jump, but he calmed when he saw it was his fiancée Iris West. "Hey." Iris said, pulling a chair to seat next to him. Barry took her hand in his, smiling at it. "I can take the next shift if you want to? I know what it feels to just be waiting for someone to wake up." Iris added. "And you got to be awake in two days there will be an inspector coming in because apparently they don't know what caused the explosion." Iris added.
"I told Joe that the investigation will be kept in doors for now." Barry told Iris. "I don't know how to tell her, Iris." Barry said, looking at Nayara.
"Tell her what?" Iris asked her.
"That she stuck here with us. It took months, almost a year for me and Cisco to build the bridge. Everything I worked out, all the calculations for her world where at the other side of the portal. How am I going to tell her that she can't get back to her home? That she is stuck here." Barry explained to Iris.
"But that is not what is worrying you, is it?" Iris asked him. "Do you think the woman was working with somebody else?" Iris asked him.
"No. It's...It's just that she...ummm.... she lost somebody really important to her and got her heart broken just in a span of two days." Barry explained. "I'm just worry about her, that's all." Barry added.
Iris looked to the side, seeing Bruce Wayne waiting outside the glass doors. "I think you have a visitor." Iris said to Barry, pointing at the direction where Bruce Wayne was. Barry sighed, standing up from the chair before making his way to where Bruce was.
"Hi." Bruce said, looking at Barry.
The speedster put his hands in his pockets as he looked at Bruce. "Why are you here?" Barry asked him.
Bruce nodded towards Nayara's body. "She needs a real doctor. She needs a real hospital, Barry." Bruce said to him.
Barry shook his head. "I am not talking her to a real hospital. If I do then they will question what happened to her. How I am exactly going to explain to the police that a woman from a different world caused all this?" Barry asked him.
"She needs a doctor." Bruce said to him. "And from what I have heard there is already an investigation going in Star Labs. I don't think there would be much of a change." Bruce added.
"You don't understand." Barry said to him. Barry passed his hand over his face, thinking of what he could tell Bruce without damaging Nayara's secret. "I-It's complicated....She is better staying here." Barry told him.
Bruce's eyes caught sight of a photo near a desk, which had Barry and Nayara together. "They wouldn't be asking." Bruce said to Barry.
"Why would you say that?" Barry asked him.
"Because I already bought the hospital that in twenty-minute walk from here. It's the best in Central City and Wayne Industries will be covering the insurance." Bruce explained to him. Barry sighed, not surprised of Bruce's words.
"Alright." Barry said, looking at him. "But...ummm...there might be a problem." Barry added.
"Which is?" Bruce asked him.
"Her blood is mutated. That's what give her powers. If somebody finds that, she will be in great danger." Barry explained. Bruce nodded at him.
. . .
Wally looked at Nayara through the hospital window. He had some flowers on his hands and 'get well soon'. He had been with his aunt Iris when the explosion happened. The young adult was worried for his friend. Nayara without knowing had become a important person on his life, not only his friend but his partner in crime when watching marathons of their favorite tv show.
Barry saw Wally waiting outside unsure about being allowed inside. Barry walked away from Bruce and towards Wally. "You can go inside." Barry said to him. Barry watched how Wally entered the room with uncertainty.
The speedster crossed his arms over his chest, but it seemed that this particular morning could not be a quiet place for him. Kara came running down the hospital, quickly walking to Barry. "You didn't tell me you were transferring her." Kara said to Barry, looking at him with slight annoyance.
"It wasn't my idea." Barry whispered to her. Then he sent a look towards Bruce.
"I thought we had a plan of keeping Nayara away from the spotlight." Kara said to him. "You know I had to hear from Clark that you had moved her to the hospital." Kara added.
"How did Clark know?" Barry asked her.
"He was going to bring her a get well soon card. I don't think he knows she hasn't woken up." Kara answered. Barry smiled at her. "Why are you smiling?" Kara asked him.
"Because I would have loved to see Nayara's face if she woke up and the first thing she saw was Superman." Barry said. "We both known how that would have gone down." He added. Kara laughed, nodding at him.
Then the door flung open with Wally exiting it. "She is awake. I don't know what to do, she keeps asking for someone named Steve." Wally said to Barry.
Barry entered quickly, seeing Nayara moving her side to look at her surroundings. "Hey." Barry whispered, walking towards her. He took a seat next to her and Nayara tried to seat up but couldn't. Instead, she was looking around in panic. "Calm, you are safe." Barry told her. "I put Sharon on a cell. She wouldn't be hurting anymore." He added.
Nayara looked at him with eyes filled with tears. "Steve?" She asked Barry. Barry sighed, taking out now washed dog tags that belonged to no other than Steve Rogers. Nayara wished it was all a dream that moment. She wished that Barry did not had the tags, and that this was just a nightmare, but it wasn't.
Nayara looked at dog tags that Barry put on her hand. The brunette closed her eyes, shaking her head. "I shouldn't have never left." She whispered, but Barry heard her. The brunette let out a sob, as the pain within her increase by the second. It was not caused by the wounds but by her heart. A heart that had taken too many hits too quickly.
Barry pulled her into a hug, and Nayara hugged him tightly back. "It should have been me and not him." Nayara whispered to him as she let tears fall down her face. On the other side of the door, Kara stood with a sour look watching how her friend sobbed due to the loss of someone she loved.
. . .
After being checked by the doctors, Nayara was cleared to go. Both Barry and Kara have seen the sudden change in the girl's state. Not even Kara's visit with cookies would bring the small back to the girl.
Iris tried her best to cheer her up, but nothing seemed to help the girl. Not even helping Barry on missions, well that was until she stopped that as well. Iris and Barry were both concerned, and did not know what to do. They were trying their best to cheer the girl up, even Kara invinted her back to her apartment, but Nayara was worried of living with her and did not want to give her the burden of dealing with a crying young adult all the time. Wally even tried his best jokes on her. As for Richard Grayson, who even texted and called Nayara, he was forgetten memory or so he thought. She ignored him since she wanted to clear her mind and not stress over somebody else.
Nayara now sat quietly next to a window cill. She had her knees pulled up to her chin. On her hands was Steve Rogers's dog tags. The brunette was quiet, but she was still could hear Iris and Barry talking silently with themselves.
The brunette put the dog tags around her neck before quickly walking to the kitchen were Barry and Iris were talking.
Barry leant on the side of the wall. "You have to tell her, Barry. She deserves to know." Iris told him, looking at him. Iris put some warm water on three cups, one for each member of the household: her, Barry and Nayara.
"I know. I...How do I tell her?" Barry asked her.
Iris moved around, going to get the tea bags from the cupboard. When she did she saw Nayara quietly watching the two. "Well, why don't you tell her now." Iris said to Barry. "Nayara, honey you can come out." Iris told Nayara who she had seen hide behind the wall.
Nayara came out of her hiding spot and walked closer to Iris. Barry looked at Nayara who had her hands hidden inside the pockets of Steve's leather jacket. Barry stood and looked at Nayara. "What happened?" Nayara asked him.
"I think it's better if I showed you." Barry said to her. He took out one hand from his pocket. Nayara took out her own and took Barry hand. Iris felt the gush of wind next to her, signaling the two of them leaving.
Barry stopped in the hall of where the explosion had happened. He helped Nayara through the debris and into the room where the portal opener used to be. Nayara entered deeper into the room, seeing it completely destroyed.
"It will take months. Probably more than a year to fix it." Barry said to her.
"That's the thing you didn't want to tell me." Nayara noted, kneeling down. She looked at the destruction. "Why didn't you want to tell me?" Nayara asked him.
"Because I thought you had enough with Steve. I didn't want to add you to more worry. You have had enough." Barry said to her.
"How bad was the damage?" Nayara asked him, looking at him with a curious look.
"Everything is gone. I mean, we still have the plans but all the calculations for the Marvel world were erased. It's all gone." Barry explained to Nayara. "You know you are always welcome to stay with me and Iris. We need somebody to help us with the wedding." Barry added.
"I can't. I wouldn't want to intrude." Nayara said, quickly standing up. "I...just want to be alone for a minute." Nayara said before running away. Running away to the place where she knew she could clear her mind.
. . .
Nayara said quietly next to the dock she had found when she first came to Central City. The girl dried the side of her nose with the palm of her hand as she watched the skyline. The brunette stood up, looking around to see if somebody was around her, but there was none. The girl sighed, taking deep breath before letting out a painful scream.
The scream pierced through the air while the calm water broke into tiny waves. Nayara fist tighten, closing her eyes briefly. She sighed once more. She was now stuck in another world once more. If I had already been once, then I can try and manage once more, she thought.
Nayara turned around, getting ready to walk away when something fell off the inside of her pocket. Nayara picked it up, seeing a piece of paper tied with a ribbon to a necklace with the symbol of Carol Danvers.
She sat back down on the floor and picked up the necklace. She opened the paper, seeing her name being written on the back. She opened it even more seeing the hand writing she knew too well.
Dear, Nay. I hope this remained you of your origins and what you believe in. I hope you take good care of yourself.
- The man with A plan, Steve.
Nayara eyes watered, taking deep breath as she saw looked at the necklace. When she turned it, she saw an engraving on the back. Nayara let out some more tears standing up from the floor. The young brunette smiled at the necklace before putting it on. She was unaware that Steve had put that necklace on purpose inside of the jacket as a surprise.
The young brunette was too consumed in her thoughts that she didn't saw the pair of eyes watching her, but she did hear the shuffling. Nayara turned around, looking for somebody but no one was there. Before she could search whoever was that made that noise, her attention was bought to something that was flying too quickly through the sky. The brunette put her hand over her eyes, looking at the incoming dot that was quickly going to Central City. Within seconds, it crashed against a building, causing a big explosion. The brunette's eyes widened at the sight. Nayara fixed her jacket before making her back to the city as quickly as she could. A new threat had come to earth, and it was not going to be the last.
. . .
A/N: Can you guess who she had seen fly? There will be a big surprise in the next chapter. A character will make a cameo and it will be important on later on chapters. I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. I'm not going to lie, I love writing scenes between Nayara and Barry because the both of them are good friends, Barry considers her as his sister and best friend.
