49 | RETURN TO THE MARVEL UNIVERSE
STEVE STOOD TALL inside the Avenger's tower. One in which he did not know he would ever walk inside ever again after the side he took. After all, he was a criminal. If the earth would not be in danger, the civil war before the ones against and for the superhero registration act would have not have ended.
"Have they found a location for Tony yet?" Steve asked Natasha.
The red-haired assassin looked at him. "Nothing. It is like he disappeared from the entire earth." Natasha said to him.
"And he is not the only one. Some people have been reported missing since those things opened from the skies." Maria Hill said to both of them.
"What things?" Steve asked them. It was not known to him what they were talking about since he had not been in the tower when the portals started to open. Instead he was in hiding, avoiding any trouble while he planned the next strike and helped mutants escape their persecution. He knew that these people did not choose to have the powers, they were born with it and just because they were different did not meant they had to persecuted. He started this fight for Nayara, because he knew that if she did in fact return home – something he always hoped for – she would be put in jail or something worst. He did not want that for her. It did not hit him how much this fight meant when he was helping a young girl escape, she was around twelve with big brown eyes just like Nayara had; and just like the girl she was alone in this fight.
Maria Hill pulled up a footage of a portal being opened, and a man falling down from it into their world. Steve remained with a blank face even though on the inside he knew that maybe Nayara was behind that. It was the same light he saw the day she disappeared.
"There has been spotted across the world. We are trying to figure out who was the man who fell from there. He is nowhere to be found." Hill said to him.
"I want every camera looking for that man." Steve told her. "Has anybody seen Banner?" Steve asked them.
"No. Since the incident in the containment cell." Natasha told him. She looked at the blonde who seemed acting strange since he saw the video. "What are you thinking?" Natasha asked him. Steve shrugged at her. "Do you remember when you told me that if it came to protect Nayara you would fight anybody?" Natasha asked Steve.
"I never said it." Steve corrected her.
"You didn't have to." Natasha reminded him. "Maybe she is on the other side of those portals?" Natasha asked him.
"How do you know that?" Steve asked her.
Natasha shrugged. "Maybe it was not Loki, but something else that took her. She isn't right now because she can't go back. From what I have heard, you mean the world to her just as much as she means to you." Natasha added. "I don't understand why you will pick the other side." Natasha added.
"Who do a lot of things for the ones we care for the most." Steve said to her. "Any sight of Thor?" Steve asked her.
"We are still trying to contact him. He is on another planet looking for his brother." Natasha added.
"Alright, then pile up a list of people missing and where they were seen last. Maybe we can get a chance to see through the other side of this portals." Steve told her.
Natasha passed him his shield. "Nice photos." She commented before walking away. Steve sighed, looking at the inside of his shield were there was a photo of Bucky and him, and another right next to it. In the picture Nayara was sitting next to Steve, smiling at the camera.
"I will find you. I promise. Just stay alive for me." Steve mumbled to himself.
. . .
Nayara limp body was laid on the floor. While Kara was silently panicking, Nightwing knelt down next to the quiet girl had meant months ago.
He put both of his hands-on top of her chest before starting to do CPR to her. He was not going to let her die, not under his watch at least. "Come on." He mumbled to himself, continue to do it for a couple more minutes.
"Nightwing-" Wonder Woman started, but the raven-haired boy ignored her.
"Stop it." Nightwing said, sending a look to her. He looked down again at the girl and tried once more.
Kara knelt next to Nayara's other side, brushing the hair of her face. Just as her hope was beginning to fade, Nayara coughed. Nightwing helped her seat up a little bit while Kara watched carefully.
Nayara's vision was blurred and all she could possibly see was a set of blonde hair right next to her, and strong arms wrapped around her. Nayara smiled weakly, putting a hand over Kara's. "Shss. It's okay. I'm right here. I never leaving ever again." Kara whispered to her.
Nightwing lifted her up from the floor and walked to the jet. He set her down softly on a medical bed. Kara flew inside, standing right next to Nayara. The brunette was dying to talk but she was too dizzy to do, so instead she gave one last smile to Kara and held her hand tightly.
"She needs to get checked." Kara told Nightwing.
"I'm aware." He replied. "Do you have any good ideas?" Nightwing asked her.
"There is a place." Kara said to him. "The DEO is opened." She added.
Nightwing shook his head. "I'm not taking her to the DEO." Nightwing told her.
"The medical bay is still intact, and currently this is the safest place for her." The woman who had defeated the villain said. "Nightwing just call Batman and keep a watch on that man. I will take care of the girl." She added. Nightwing sighed, who was he to argue against Wonder Woman.
. . .
Nayara opened her eyes, feeling a piercing pain on her throat. She felt as if had drank a poison that had burned her insides. "You are feeling better?" A voice said to her. Nayara turned around slightly, freezing when she saw the woman standing next to her bed.
Nayara was going to be honest with herself, on that moment she had forgotten her own name.
"You okay?" The woman asked her.
Nayara just opened her mouth in shock but nothing came out of it. "I think I have never seen her this quiet before." A voice from the door said. Nayara stood up, regretting it the moment she did. The brunette looked up to see Batman standing there.
"Hi, I'm Diana. It's nice to finally meet the girl that saved Batman's life." Wonder Woman said to her.
"I didn't say-" Batman started, but stopped, knowing he couldn't argue with Wonder Woman.
Nayara looked at Batman, suddenly realizing something. "W-what-" She started but stopped when she felt the piercing pain on her throat. She looked at Wonder Woman in awe. "Nayara." She whispered to her.
The woman gave her a kind smile that made Nayara feel so much better. "Where...is the man.... who...attacked." Nayara asked them.
Wonder Woman put a hand on Nayara's shulder. "He is filled with strong sedatives." Wonder Woman said. "Just a long with the big green guy. Superman almost drown him in the process if it were not for Supergirl." Wonder Woman said. "She is in the room next door." Wonder Woman said, pointing ahead.
Nayara nodded, thanking the woman. "You are prettier in person." She mumbled before walking off to find Kara. Wonder Woman smiled at the comment.
"She is really sweet. She seems very unproblematic." Wonder Woman told Batman.
"You would think." The man said to her.
Nayara walked to where Kara was sitting. She regretted the moment she opened the door. "Nayara!" Kara exclaimed, running to her but the brunette's eyes were on the bloodied Tony stark. "He was like that the moment he fell from the sky." Kara said to her, watching come closer to the body. "His vitals are okay. I guess he just got a pretty bad hit." She added.
Nayara looked at the destroyed suit next to the bed. She looked at the slashes, passing her hand through them. She wondered what could have caused such damage.
Ahh!
A gasp startled both Nayara and Kara. The two girls went closer to the medical bed and looked down at the billionaire. Nayara smiled a little, watching him open his eyes. The man was more than startled at the sight of the two girls just hawking at him. The surprise was such that the man almost fell off the bed in hope of running away.
"You're okay." Nayara said, smiling at Tony. She was more than relived to know that he was alive and well. "What happened to your face?" She asked with a little struggle, taking a closer look at the injuries in his face.
Tony sat up, looking at Nayara has she was an alien. "What?" Tony said, looking at Nayara in pure shock. Then he turned, recognizing the girl who seemed to be next to Nayara all the time ever since he met her. "You!" He said, pointing at Kara. Then he turned to Nayara. "And you!" He said to her.
"You're safe." Nayara said with difficulty before brushing her bruised neck. Tony narrowed her eyes at her, noticing the mark that was forming on her neck.
"Should we tell him where he is?" Kara whispered to Nayara.
Nayara shook her head. "Not yet." Nayara said to him. The brunette looked at Tony who was watching where he was with cautious.
"Is this the base of the resistance?" Tony asked Nayara with narrowed eyes.
Nayara scoffed at him. "We are not in Star Wars." She said, ending quickly her sentence due to the pain. Nayara motioned for Kara to speak, while she tried to recover her voice.
"What happened to you? Got hit by a truck?" Kara asked him with a raised eyebrow. Tony gave him a tired annoyed look.
"Where am I?" Tony asked Nayara, while still looking at the bruise around her neck.
"I will tell you.... if you tell me what happened?" Nayara asked him.
Tony sighed, shaking his head. "Right. I better answer. You are as stubborn as Rogers." Tony mumbled. A small hit of sadness passed Tony's eyes and Nayara was the only one who saw it. After all, she was one of the rare people who believed that Tony did have a heart, even if it was partially made out of metal.
Due to the sadness that Nayara saw in his eyes, she knew she had to ask him about Steve. The worst passed her mind, making her slowly regret that she was here. "Is Steve okay?" Nayara asked with hesitation, both due to fear and guilt of the mere possibility that he was dead.
Tony looked at her. "You have been gone a long time." Tony told her. "He is fine. Do you know where he is hiding? You know that if you help him, that's against the law. He is a criminal now." Tony added.
Nayara looked at him in the eyes while analyzing his words. Civil War, Nayara thought. Nayara came closer to Tony. "Is he alive?" Nayara asked him with pure concern. Tony nodded at her. "I don't know where he is." She added.
Before Tony could say anything else, Barry entered the room. "Umm, we got a slight problem." Barry said to both girls. Nayara gave him a confused look at Barry, who in return came closer to her to break up the news. "You have to see this for yourself. I don't know what to do." Barry said to her.
Nayara frowned, looking at him but before she could question him further Tony caught both of their attention by screaming. "You!" Tony said, standing up. "You are the speedster! You're the speedster that took Nayara!" Tony added, pointing at Barry.
"It's actually the Flash." Barry corrected him.
Nayara turned to look at Tony, hoping to calm him down. "You sit down there and wait. Don't touch your face because it will hurt. I will be back to patch you up." Nayara said to him before walking out of the room with Barry.
Tony sighed in annoyance, turning to Kara who was giving him a brief smile. "You know, Nayara said that your armor is quite cool and very hard to defeat but it didn't seem like it when you were falling down from the sky. You should put some parachutes on it." Kara told Tony. Tony took deep breath trying to calm himself out. "What did it even happen?" Kara asked Tony.
Tony turned to face his suit that had taken most of the hits for him. "I fought a friend." Tony told Kara. "Do you know where the bathroom is?" He asked her, already forming a plan to escape this place and possibly take the young brunette with him just for her safety. However, his planned failed, because Kara pointed at the small room behind him. Tony then attempted to run away but was stopped by Kara once more. The blonde put Tony back in the room. "Stay inside, Stark." Kara warned Tony.
"Who are you to boss-" Tony did not got to finish his sentence due to the shock of seeing Kara's eyes turn a vibrant red. The man closed the door back again, not bothering saying anything else. "Where does this girl get her friends?" Tony mumbled to himself.
. . .
Nayara stood in front of the doors to where Barry had led her to. "I don't understand what you needed to show me." Nayara said to him.
Barry gave her a weak smile. "Something happened to Hulk." Barry said to her.
"He is alive, right?" Nayara asked him with cation. Barry just opened the door for her, reviling a single man with dark brown hair sitting on the medical bed. The man looked at them from over his shoulder. Nayara swore softly, approaching the man quicker. "What's your name?" Nayara asked him.
The man looked at her with confusion. "Umm...it's Bruce Banner." He said to her. Nayara relaxed at the news. "Where am I?" Bruce asked her.
Nayara smiled at him. "Oh, he is fine Barry. I don't see what the worry is about." Nayara said to Barry from over her shoulder before turning to look at Bruce Banner. Barry had thought something had been terrible wrong because the green giant man was gone and now stood a normal man. He knew he will never heard the end of it from Nayara if something did happen to Hulk. "You're...umm...somewhere safe right now." Nayara said to him.
"Well, I was just concerned because he is not green anymore." Barry replied to her.
Bruce stood up at Barry's words. "Did I hurt anybody?" Bruce asked Nayara.
Nayara shook her head. "Nobody was hurt." Nayara said to him. "I'm Nayara Lilly. It's quite exciting to finally meet you doctor. You are a very cool superhero." Nayara added, taking out her hand for him to shake. The man shook her hand.
He gave her a worried smile. "That's not the words, that people will normally use." Bruce told her. Nayara smiled, shrugging. "I'm not in SHIELD, am I?" Bruce asked her.
"No. It's a little bit more complicated than that, but I hope to bring you back into your world." Nayara said to him as she motioned to seat down. "It's quite a complicated situation. I hope to explain it to you if you have the time." Nayara said to him, taking a seat in the medical bed. Bruce took a seat next to the young girl who held such a kind smile. Nayara then explained the situation to him.
. . .
Nayara sat opposite to Barry next to the big computer in Mount Justice. "So, Cisco can open the portal to the Marvel world and we can just drop them off there, right?" Nayara asked Barry, who nodded at her. "Then what do we do with Lex? I mean he can do this thing again." Nayara added.
"One problem at the time." Batman said to Nayara, standing right behind her. "You solve one quicker if you focus on it. Then you change to the next one." Batman explained to her.
"Okay," Nayara said, looking at Batman with a small smile. Barry looked at Batman with an amused expression. "But, I have to go inside that portal first. It will be catastrophic if I dropped them off in the wrong world, or earth within that world." Nayara said to Barry.
"Good thing I'm coming along." Barry said to her.
"No, you wouldn't mister I get stuck in the time force or a different earth because I don't listen." Nayara said to him.
"Says the one miss I'm fighting Superman because why not?" Barry said to her. Barry stood up from the table. "Maybe you could see Steve, check on him. I will wait with you to make sure you get back." Barry added, only loud enough for her to hear. "He is probably okay." He reassured her before leaving.
Nayara sighed, keeping her eyes on the empty seat. "I will be fine. You should go and help some people." Nayara told Batman with a tired look. "I just want to have some alone time. Gather my thoughts, and all that jazz." Nayara said to Batman.
"Superman mentioned that you knew terrible well the people who fell from the sky." Batman said to her. Nayara rested her hands, which laid on the table. The cool of the metal calming her mind a little. "You knew that man dressed in the iron suit and the green one." Batman added.
"What do you want to know, Bruce?" Nayara asked him with curiosity. She knew what he was trying to lead her to. She knew him all too well.
Batman took a seat opposite to her. "I never said that." He told her.
"You didn't have to." Nayara said before giving him a light smile. "We all keep things to ourselves and from others, you should know that more than anyone." Nayara said to him. "I'm not judging you or anything. I would never be able to judge you, Bruce, nor Batman. People see two different people with you. One careless man without a mask, and then the masked one who spends his nights fighting crime to help others. But what they don't know if that deep down you are the same kind man, even if people disagree with it." Nayara added, not looking at Batman. The brunette sighed, standing up. "You're a good man, Bruce. Secrets are always there for a reason." She added before walking away.
. . .
Nayara looked at the big pillars that held the portal opener. She stood there, watching carefully each and every detail. "Okay, first we bring Tony and Banner. Then Magneto since he is pretty dangerous." Nayara said, looking at the metal. Unconsciously she put a hand on her throat.
"I'm coming with you." Barry said to her. "Where do you want me to drop them off?" Barry asked her.
"Avengers tower will be fine." Nayara said, turning slightly to look at Barry. Barry walked closer to her, passing her a blue box. Nayara opened it quickly. "What's that for?" Nayara asked him, looking at the present.
Barry smiled lightly at her. "It's a mask. So, if you got to use your powers back there, nobody would know who you are." Barry said to her. "What are you worried about?" Barry said, taking seat on the floor. The brunette patted the floor next to him and Nayara did not hesitate to sit down.
"When I left I knew a war was coming. I just don't know if...if the war has ended." Nayara said to him.
"Why? Because you don't want to go?" Barry asked her. Nayara shook her head. The brunette looked down at the blue box, while stretching her long legs on the floor. "What are you so afraid to see?" Barry asked her.
Nayara looked up to him. "Steve." Nayara whispered to him. It was low enough for only them two to hear, but another person had been standing behind them without their awareness. "I'm afraid that it ends how I know it ends. I'm afraid that....I'm afraid of losing him, I guess." Nayara said to him. "I lost my parents, but then him and Emma were so welcoming. He never questioned me trusting him with most of my thoughts. When Sharon wanted to kill him, he stood up and fought her even if he knew for just so little." Nayara explained to Barry. "I always loved Captain America, but when I got to finally meet him, see the real him, I sometimes think of what will happen if he dies. I think a part of me will die to." Nayara added.
"Didn't Tony ask for him? Maybe he isn't dead." Barry told her.
"What if he doesn't want to see me after everything I did back in.... back when he found Loki?" Nayara asked him.
"What if you stop questioning, and just see what happens?" Barry asked her. "I know you have relied on your knowledge for so long...that it scares you to not know what will happen." Barry added. Barry put a supporting arm over Nayara's shoulder. Nayara smiled, leaning her head on Barry's shoulder.
"Thank you for being there." Nayara whispered.
"I will always be." Barry added.
. . .
Nayara watched from the sidelines, how the portal opened. Tony Stark, a little afraid of Kara's laser eyes listened to Nayara. In his mind he was trying to figure out how the girl had gotten herself into all this. It seemed she was not kidnapped at all, rather given the choice, which shocked him. So rather than questioning the young adult, that Steve cared for as if it were his own, he decided to take a different approach. "Are you sure this is going to work?" Tony asked her, fixing up his Iron glove.
"It should." Nayara said to him. "You never told me what happened." Nayara pointed out.
"I fought Steve." Tony said to her. Nayara looked at him cautiously but did not seemed surprised. "He picked the wrong side." Tony told her.
"It depends on what you perceive the wrong side to be." Nayara debated.
"He broke the law. Now he is a criminal." Tony said to her. Nayara looked ahead, watching how Cisco opened the portal. Nayara sighed, walking towards the portal. "Umm...what are you doing?" Tony asked her, watching how the girl put one step forward, and inside the portal. Toy swore loudly, running to go inside, but a red streak bit him to it.
Nayara looked around the alley which the portal opened. She walked quietly to the newsstands and looked at the newspapers. She sighed, seeing the date and years was correct. The brunette looked up from the newsstands, just to be meant by some angry eyes.
"Are you going to buy this or what?" The newsman said.
"Another time." Nayara told him, stepping away. As she stepped away she spotted a picture of Spiderman. The girl sighed, looking at the picture one last minute before stepping away. The brunette went back to the alley, to see Flash leaning against a wall. "We are good. I think." Nayara said to him.
. . .
Alert! Alert! Alert!
"Captain Rogers!" Hill said, running towards the man who was sitting on the couch next to the hero Sam Wilson. "Our computers caught high energy impulses here in Manhattan." Hill said to him.
The blonde hero stood up from his seat, looking at the incoming agent. "What is it?" Steve asked her.
"It's another portal." Hill answered.
