45 | DESTROYED HEARTS
KARA DANVERS ARRIVED to the apartment with a big box of cupcakes. The words exchanged between her and Nayara were bad, but she was ready to fix everything. What first surprised the blonde was the darkness of the apartment. All lights were off, which was weird since she knew how Nayara hated darkness.
"Nay!" Kara called out to her as she walked deeper into the apartment. She left the cupcakes in the kitchen table, before walking to the bedroom door. When she entered, she saw that Nayara was nowhere in sight. Instead, there a small handwritten note on the bed.
I'm sorry
N.L.F
Kara looked at it with slight worry. She sighed, leaving her apartment to go and look for Nayara. It was unknown to her that Nayara was already long gone from National City.
. . .
Nayara sat on the train to Central City. The only place she knew that she could run to if things got bad. The brunette had swollen eyes and was not letting the crying stop. She should have been more careful.
The brunette pulled out the batarang from inside of her sweater. She smiled at it. She hid it back in the pocket before pulling out the bracelet that Steve once had given her. Nayara put it on the desk in front of her, looking as she thought back of her home. Of the people she care for: Emma, Logan, Steve.....Peter.
It was not bad idea to go back home. Maybe just maybe, it was better that way. Maybe she could return in case Steve didn't found her notes. Maybe she would not bother - which she thought she did the other two will argue against it - Kara and Barry, and everything would be alright.
Zap!
The train took a sudden spot, making Nayara lean to the front due to the force. She put the bracelet back in her wrist as she looked worriedly at the flickering lights. She ignored the mumbling from the other passengers and looked outside.
Nothing.
Then every single light turned off. The brunette started to panic and quickly dialed Barry's phone number. She was not far from Central City after all. However, before she could get a word out the screaming started.
The brunette walked to the end of her compartments to look at the other ones. From a far she saw a small flicker quick flicker of light before the shooting started. The girl turned around, trying to quiet the people. "Everyone, out from the back now!" Nayara yelled at them as she instructed them to leave.
She stayed behind, looking at the incoming criminals. She was unaware that somebody was watching her every move. Nayara sighed, looking down at the shield at hand and then at the ring in her purse.
Before she could reach it, the criminals had entered the compartment. Nayara hide behind one wall, quickly texting Barry for help. She even tried Wally, but there was no response. She closed her eyes, taking deep breath.
One.
Steve will have a heart attack when I tell him. Nayara thought to herself.
Two.
When she saw one man enter, she turned on her shield.
Three.
Nayara hit the man with her shield while avoiding the gun. She kicked the back of his knee, making his loose his balance. While he fell down the girl had taken the gun away. She pulled her shield even higher and hit the man with it twice.
Nayara turned around just to be seen by another criminal. Nayara pulled the shield up to her, blocking all the bullet. She quickly thought of how Steve used his shield. "Oh, this is going to be such a bad idea." Nayara said to herself.
She looked up to the man, before hiding back again. "Okay, just hope it works. Hope is a powerful thing, right?" Nayara asked herself.
She stood up quickly before throwing the shield. The girl hid back again, waiting for the bullets to come down, but they didn't. She pulled out her head from her place not seeing the man. With a little bit of confidence, she stood up back again.
Bad idea.
A body collided against Nayara, making her fall back to her hiding spot. The brunette looked up to the person who had pushed her to the floor just to come face to face with a pair of electric blue eyes.
The boy who was around her age, motion her to be quiet. Nayara glared at him slightly, pushing him off her. "What are you doing?" Nayara asking him. "I told everyone to run!" She whispered yelled.
"Well, you didn't run. That wasn't very smart. Do you really think you could stop those guys? Who do you think you are?" The boy answered.
"Oh, I don't know? Batman!" She whispered back at him. The boy scoffed at her, almost as if he was trying to hide the laugh that was about to leave his mouth. Nayara took off her bracelet looking through a bottom to bring back Steve's shield.
"What are you doing?" The boy asked her.
"Nothing of your business, Mr. I'm trying to be a hero too." Nayara said to her.
"Does, I'm Batman have a name?" The boy asked her as he tried to observed the incoming threat.
Nayara rolled her eyes, finally able to find another bottom. She pressed it and took out her hand. The shield went straight into her wrist. Although the celebration did not last long, the man race to them.
But he did not get to shoot because the boy kicked the gun away from. Nayara's mouth open wide as she thought the boy move as he were a dancer. Nayara was so amazed that she did not see the bullet coming her way.
Bang!
Nayara was suddenly at the end of the train. She smiled slightly, seeing the red lighting go inside the train. In a blink of an eye the boy who had saved Nayara's life was right next to her. A proud smile appeared on her face knowing who had came.
Nayara's hair got blown away by the guy in the yellow suit. "Are you okay?" Wally asked her down her suit.
"Yeah, yeah. Just go!" She said to him before watching him go. Nayara smiled slightly, seeing her friends fight the criminals. She slowly turned to look at the boy who saved her. "Umm....thanks for saving my life. I would have been shot if you haven't fought that criminal." Nayara told him. "The name is Nayara." She said, taking out her hand.
The boy smirked at her, shaking her hand. He knew her, but she did not know him or so he thought. "Richard Grayson, but my friends call me Dick." The boy said.
Nayara gulped, looking at him with wide eyes. And oh boy! She did the mistake to look right through those beautiful blue eyes. "Nice to meet you." Nayara replied softly, pulling her hand back again.
In a blink of an eye Kid Flash and Flash appeared in front of them. "Are you two alright?" Flash asked them.
Nayara nodded at him, still slightly shocked she had met Nightwing without his mask. "I'm alright." Nayara told him.
"Need help getting back in the city?" Wally asked her.
"Yeah, I umm...Flash will do the favor right?" Nayara asked, giving a pleading look to Barry who nodded with hesitation. "Alright." She said looking at Flash.
Before Richard could say goodbye to the attractive brunette, she was gone. "What has gotten into her?" Wally asked his former best friend.
"I don't know...but she is pretty." Dick told him, giving him a small smirk.
. . .
Nayara sat down in Star Labs, watching how Barry paced around the room. "You couldn't wait until I came, couldn't you?" Barry asked her.
"I was buying you some time, Bar." Nayara pointed out with hesitation. "I'm sorry." She added not looking up to him. She was waiting for him to snap the way Kara had done with her; but he didn't.
"I was so worried." Barry told her, kneeling down on the other side of the desk. He looked at Nayara, watching her with detail. "What happened in National City?" Barry asked her, squinting his eyes to look closely at Nayara's face. "What happened to your face?" Barry asked her, reaching out to touch her bruise, but regretted one the girl flinched.
"Nothing. I got it solved." Nayara said, standing up.
Barry frowned, looking at her. "I saw your red eyes but I didn't have the nerve to ask you about it." Barry told her. "Did you go back home? Was it Peter?" Barry asked her. Nayara shook her head.
"Nay, talk to me. Please." Barry told her. Nayara's back faced him. He could hear Nayara sniff a little. "We are friends. We are together through everything, remember? Super-friends? Partners in crime?" Barry asked her, approaching her quietly.
"Until you get mad at me for some stupid thing and then you don't want to be friends with me." Nayara whispered to him.
"Why would I do that?" Barry asked her, now standing next to her. The brunette shrugged, not looking at him in the eyes. "Talk." Barry told her, putting a hand on her shoulder. Nayara let out a small tear, shaking her head.
"I...I don't know how you would react." Nayara replied to him, looking down. She took a seat down, and Barry sat opposite to her. "What are you doing?" Nayara asked him, trying to hide her tears.
The hero rested his chin on his hand, leaning his own head on the table. "Just keeping you company." Barry said, smiling at the memory of when Nayara used to do that. Just sit in silence next to him.
Minutes passed, and it almost turned into and hour of hearing Nayara hold back her tears. Until it stopped. Barry looked at her, seeing her face gain a little bit more color. "I fought Superman." Nayara said to him.
"What?" Barry asked her.
"I fought Superman." Nayara said to him. "That is why Kara was mad. That is why I had been crying. Superman was going to kill Batman and I couldn't let that happen." Nayara said to him. "And that's why I had been crying." She added.
Barry stood up from his seat and walked up to Nayara. He smiled and pulled her into a hug. Nayara let out another set of tears, feeling save and less alone. "It's okay." Barry whispered to her.
Then a voice caught up their attention. "Barry!" Someone called out. Nayara dried her tears, before a person walked inside the room. "Barry, there you are. I have-" The woman stopped, seeing Nayara in the room.
"Yes, I forgot to call back." Barry said to the woman. A small smile spread through Nayara's face recognizing her. "Nayara this is my girlfriend, Iris West. Iris, this is my best friend and partner in crime, Nayara." Barry said, presenting the two of them.
Iris walked quickly closer to Nayara, ready to shake her hand. "Oh, it's finally good to meet the girl Barry always talks about." Iris said with excitement. "Thank you for looking after him while I wasn't around." She added while the two of them shook their hands.
Nayara looked down, feeling something cold in her hand.
Oh boy!
Nayara let out a small scream, pulling her hand back. She turned to look at Barry and then at Iris's hand. "Oh my god! Is.....i-is that! That is! I know what that is!" The brunette yelled pointing at Iris's hand. "For real? For real?" Nayara asked Barry with hope and excitement in her eyes.
Barry chuckled, amused by Nayara's reaction. "Yes, it is." Barry told her. Nayara's smile widen. She pulled Barry into another hug before turning around and hugging Iris, who did not hesitate to hug back.
She is so sweet, Iris mouthed to Barry who was happy to see the two person who he cared for get along. "So this is the girl that saved your life and helped you come home back to me? Well, I am glad you invited her to our wedding. Now, Nayara. Welcome to Central City. I have heard wonderful things about you." Iris told her, pulling away from the hug.
However, the happiness was short lived when a beeping sounded from the computers. Barry walked around the table looking at it. Nayara watched from over Barry's shoulder at the call. When Barry accepted it, they were both able to see Batman.
"Is Nayara there?" Batman asked Barry. Nayara came from behind Barry, by kneeling down a little and then sitting down in front of the screen. Barry refrained himself from asking how Batman knew was there.
"Hey, Bats. In what can I help you today?" Nayara asked him, sending him a bright smile. However, that did not hide the red eyes she had.
"It's Lois Lane. I got a location for her. It's near Central City. I'm already on my way there." Batman told her.
"Can I tag along?" Nayara asked him, giving him her best puppy eyes.
"No." Barry answered from behind her.
"I fought Superman and lived to tell the story. I think I can handle a small rescue mission." Nayara pointed out. "So, did you found out who took her? Let me guess! Lex Luthor!" Nayara said in exciment.
"More complicated than that." Batman told her.
"Joker and Lex?" Nayara asked him. The silence signaled Nayara's win. "So umm....can I have the location please?" Nayara asked him.
"Send it to you right now." Batman told her. "Be ready in ten." He said to her.
"I can beat that." Nayara said before running off to find something to dress up as. Barry sat down on the seat looking at the computer with an annoyed expression. Before closing up the camara.
"I can post pone the date." Iris told him, giving him a slight smile. Barry opened his mouth but nothing came out. "Come on, go after her. She will need somebody to watch her back...and I know you will feel better if it was you." Iris told him. "I like her, she is lovely." She quickly added.
Barry walked to her and gave her a kiss before flashing away.
Little did they know that Nayara was walking to her grave.
. . .
Nayara stood next to Barry as they approached the building with quietness. She looked up the building, recognizing a shadow. "Support its on its way." Batman said, dropping down next to them.
"Have you ever landed badly while jumping in buildings?" Nayara asked him, trying to make her mask stay in place. Barry sighed, turning to her and fixing it. Turns out that Cisco had lots of prototype mask laying around in a storage.
Batman did not reply. Instead he looked ahead at the incoming figures that were approaching. Two red capes. Nayara sighed, looking down at the floor not wanting to meet Kara's eyes. Batman noticed this but decided to push it.
"Superman, you go with Barry. Swan, you are with me." Batman said before starting to walk towards the building. Nayara followed without hesitation, ignoring the blue pair of eyes that were on her.
Barry looked at Kara. "Just give her time." Barry told her before running inside.
Kara sighed, looking at her cousin with a defeated look before going inside the building. The blonde kept her eyes and hears open for anything in particular, especially the sound of Nayara voice just in case something happened.
The brunette followed Batman quickly, looking around the hall. She looked at the device that Bruce had on his hand which had a tracker on. "Trackers aren't that same. Maybe we are walking into a tramp." Nayara whispered to him. Batman send her a look but the girl did not flinch one bit. Instead she followed silently a couple of steps ahead.
However, Nayara stopped when she saw Batman draw his hand back. The girl remained silent, watching the opened door of the room. Batman used the shadow to look at it but no one was there. Instead, they heard a crash and an explosion from a couple of meters away.
"Superman." Nayara sighed, guessing it was him. Batman ran to the origin of it, but Nayara did not followed. Instead, she looked at the room. She entered it, seeing not even one sigh of another person. She looked at the picture of Lex Luthor hanging from the wall.
The brunette looked over her shoulder not seeing anybody, and she took it as a sign to continue searching. She looked down at the papers who seemed to organize. She moved them aside, stopping when she saw a blue print. She frowned, taking it out of her hiding spot.
"Oh no." She mumbled to herself, looking at the blue print. The girl took out her phone and took a picture of it. She looked around the room once more, spotting a blue and red covered book. Next to it was a photo of superman. "That shouldn't be there." She said to herself, moving the picture away just to find a small compartment.
"Bats, I think I found something." Nayara said through her ear piece. She stopped hearing the beeping noise. "There is like a tick and air coming off it." Nayara added.
In a flash of an eye, Batman was by her side along with Barry. "That's where Lois was?" Nayara asked him, watching Batman work out his gadget to open the door. The door opened with ease and Batman stepped in first, then Nayara.
In the middle of the room was a woman struggling through her strains. Nayara ran to her and started to take out the restrains. The brunette looked at the woman. "I'm sorry we had to meet in these circumstances." Nayara told her, looking sadly at her. "Your boyfriend is already here to take you away." Nayara said smiling at her.
The woman looked at her with wide eyes. "Okay." She told her.
"Flash take her out of here." Batman told him. The hero took her and flashed away. Just as they left, Batman stiffen hearing the sound of ticking noise. Batman ran to the door, taking Nayara's arm as he ran away from the room. The brunette took a hold of the blue prints before leaving the room. Just as they were feet away from the room.....
Boom!
Batman knelt down and covered both and Nayara with the cape. Batman removed the cape, looking around the room. "Thanks." Nayara said holding tightly the blue prints. The girl stood up, running after the Bat as she followed him down the hall.
"We got her, let's go." Batman said through his ear piece. Nayara followed him, but had to stop abrutley when Batman knelt down. The girl looked around the corner, seeing some security passing by.
She followed Batman through the shadows, but stopped when she saw something. Something she never thought she would have seen. Superman almost defeated, struggling to stand at the lower floor. "I think he needs our help." Nayara whispered to Batman.
"I'm getting you out first." Batman said to her.
"I think I can help-" The brunette stopped her sentence when she saw people coming their way on both sides. Both of them stood up, preparing for what was to come. Her blood started to boil when she saw who was approaching them: Deathstroke.
Batman moved around, changing spots with Nayara at the sight of the assassin. "We got a new visitor in our list, Luthor." Deathstroke said, taking out his sword from the back of his suit. "It seems that there is a new member to the Justice League." Deathstroke said to her.
Batman from his back quietly took out his bat gun. Nayara watched him quietly, knowing what the hero was planning. With one swift movement, Batman shot his gun at the roof connecting a small spear against it. The spear was tied to a rope that ended inside the gun. Nayara took a hold of Batman before both of them jumped to the lower level.
Nayara let go, looking around the room at the incoming agents. Deathstroke jumped, landed near Nayara. He was about to hit her with his sword when laser passed above his head and almost hit him.
Deathstroke turned around to Superman who was glaring at him. "You missed!" Deathstroke told him.
Superman send a look at Nayara. "I didn't." He told her. The second he finished talking, massive amount of water came coming down from the roof. Superman had aimed at what he wanted: the pipes.
Nayara finally realized a few seconds after what Superman had intended to do. The girl raised her hand, and pushed Deathstroke with the water away from her. She walked up to Clark. "Thanks. You should go." Nayara said to him. "Knowing Lex, he probably has kryptonite laying around all around here." Nayara told him.
As soon as she turned around a bullet was aimed her way, but was stopped by Superman. "Thanks." Nayara said to Superman before helping Batman. Just as they thought they were winning, a body came crashing down next to Nayara. Nayara knelt down next to Kara, who was holding the side of her chest.
Nayara used her powers to create a shield for the two of them. "Kara?" Nayara whispered to her. Kara looked up to her. "What happened?" She asked her.
"I was trying to distract Luthor from Clark while you three delt with Lois." Kara said before holding back a yelp. Nayara sighed, jumping when she felt the ground shake. Nayara looked up the shield, seeing a big armor standing next to Deathstroke.
"Shoot." Nayara whispered, looking at the green light being emitted from the armor. "Flash, get Supergirl out of here." Nayara said in the ear piece.
"No," Kara told her.
"Do you want to die! You are injured so you are going out of here right now!" Nayara snapped at her. "Flash do you copy?" Nayara asked.
"Yeah, already on my way." Flash said to her.
Nayara helped up Kara, forgetting for that second of their fight; even if she didn't she wouldn't have let one of her heroes die. The brunette helped her up, looking at the door for Flash to come.
Nayara looked at Deathstroke who was approaching Batman with ease. Nayara looked at Kara. "Just wait for Barry here." Nayara whispered to her before running off to Deathstroke. The girl ran to Deathstroke while raising her hand. When she let it down, a big fist of water collided with him.
Deathstroke looked up at her, standing up. He threw a knife her way, but the girl avoided it. She picked it up with a hand made out of water before stabbing him on the chest. He did not seemed affected by it.
Instead he smirked at her. Nayara glared at him moving her hands in circle. In matters of seconds a large ball of water centered itself over the said villain. He was unaware of it though. Nayara smirked at him, before letting the ball of water drop to him. The ball did not break, instead it seemed as it ate the man.
Nayara relaxed her hands a little, letting the water start to freeze.
Bang!
A man had hit the back of Nayara's head with the gun. Nayara felt to the floor, trying to concentrate on what was happening around her. The man aimed the gun at her, but he was stopped by Flash.
Barry knelt down next to her, shaking on her. "I'm fine, just take Kara." She sighed, turning to look at Deathstroke who was running away. Barry helped her up before running to Kara.
The blonde glared at him. "You take me away and I swear I will remove your legs myself." Kara told him. Barry gulped, nodding at her.
Nayara stood up, watching how Batman aided Superman with Lex Luthor's robot. She watched how Batman removed the head of it, revealing an empty seat inside the robot. The robot shut down. "He is not inside." Superman said, stating the obvious.
Nayara frowned, looking around the room. It was unusual for Lex Luthor to miss an opportunity to attempt to kill Superman. Nayara's heart stopped for a second when she saw from a distance a green light. Just a small dot, but one.
It aimed itself to Kara. "There are more ways to destroy a person that just killing them." Lex Luthor's voice said from the speakers.
Nayara ran to Kara like she had never run. She understood his message.
Bang! Bang!
A body fell to the floor and it wasn't Kara's.
It took a second for Kara to realize what happened. Why somebody had jumped in front of her, and when she did she saw the limp body of Nayara on the floor. Barry was the first one kneeling down beside her, looking at her eyes; but they were empty.
Barry moved her head to the side. "Hey, come on Nayara." Barry whispered to her but she did not reply. He touched the two wounds in the chest while looking at her. He waited for her to react but it wouldn't. "Nay, nay.." He called her out but she didn't even flinch.
Kara looked down in shock, seeing defeated friend. Kara let a tear fall down her cheek watching the brown eyes of Nayara who were staring into abysm. "No. No." Kara whispered to herself, feeling the shock consume her.
The blonde looked up, hearing the clicking of a gun. Her eyes turned to fire when she saw the man with the gun feeling slightly proud. Range filled her veins, burning up. Kara raised up before flying so fast she broke the sound barrier.
Boom!
With one hand on the man's chest, she held him tightly into the wall glaring at him. "Why!" Kara yelled at his face. The man smirked. Her eyes lost their normal color, instead they turned into her laser ones. "Why did you do it Lex?" She screamed at his face.
"I didn't do anything." The bald man told her. "She did it to herself." He added. Kara wanted to tear him apart piece by piece, but she couldn't. Before she could do anything else he pull out some kryptonite, forcing her to let go.
The blonde knelt down on the floor unable to hold herself any longer. She had lost her friend. She had failed to protect her and it was all her fault.
