35 | O BARRY, BARRY, WHEREFORE ART THOU BARRY?
NAYARA LOOKED AT Batman with a shocked face. "What are you doing here?" Batman asked her. Nayara could not answer, she was too consumed on admiring her favorite member of the Justice League to actually process the words he was speaking to her. "Who are you?" Batman asked her, using his threatening voice.
However, the girl did not flinch at all. Instead she touched a side of his arm and pulled it back quickly when she realized he was indeed real. "I think this belong to you." Nayara whispered to him, handling the batarang.
What happened next shocked Batman himself. The girl smiled brightly at him, not fearing him at all. "Big fan, Batman." Nayara said, trying to refrain herself from hugging the man. She now realized that it would have gotten her into more trouble and probably weirded out the man, which she did not want to do.
Batman hardened his signature batglare that even his own children would fear, but the girl did not move or changed her attitude. Batman was starting to think she was a robot. "I-I'm Nayara." She said, taking out her hand. The man did not shake it. Nayara drew it back.
"What are you doing here?" Batman asked her.
"Visiting." She stated, keeping her eyes on his mask. "I like the whole Bat thing. I think it cooler than the whole Superman without a mask thing." Nayara said before she gulped. She looked around for Barry, who was still no sight of him.
Batman glared at the girl. "How did you get past the security system?" Batman asked her. Nayara smiled at him before starting to run, not the best idea though. Batman sighed, shaking his head. As she was running away she stopped when she saw Barry stopped in front of her.
"What are you running-" Flash was going to ask her when Nayara pointed rapidly at Batman. Nayara felt to the floor as something caught her legs. She sighed, looking at one of the tools Batman always used.
"I panicked and I ran." Nayara whispered to the Flash. She sighed, when she looked at Batman who was now looking down at her. "Hello, again. Sorry, I panicked and I ran. This thing are really tight." Nayara said, pointing at the tool.
"She is my new prodigy." Barry told Batman.
"Flash." Batman sighed.
"She was helping me, and I told her to wait." Barry said before quickly freeing Nayara's feet. Nayara got up and stood confidently in front of Batman. "I'm about to take her back." Barry said before, flashing her out before Batman could say anything else.
He stopped inside the Cortex. "What did you do in just a few minutes?" Barry asked her.
"Me? I didn't do anything. He popped out of nowhere like he normally does. I just whispered Batman and turned and it was him." Nayara said, walking to get a seat. "And I touched him, Barry." She whispered to him.
Barry held back a snarky comment. "I wanted to make sure he was real so I reached out and touched his arm. I mean it was too good to be true." She noted down.
Barry sighed, holding his head in his hands. "Who is this?" A voice said. Both heroes turned around to see a boy around Nayara's age with a yellow suit.
"Wally." Nayara whispered. Thankfully, Barry was the only one who heard it.
"You know him and you don't know much about me?" Barry questioned her in a murmur.
"He is friends with one of my favorite heroes." Nayara whispered back. "And I do know some what about you. I just don't tell you so I don't sound weird." Nayara quickly whispered.
Barry walked to Wally. Nayara gave the other young hero and small smile. "This is Nayara. She is a new helper in Star Labs." Barry told Wally.
"She knows you are the Flash?" Wally asked Barry as he looked at Nayara.
Barry nodded at him. "It's a very long story." Barry answered. He looked at Nayara who was taking a seat in the desk, next to Cisco. "Nayara, this is my partner, Kid Flash." Barry said, nodding towards the said hero.
Wally flashed in front of Nayara, making her jump a little bit. She would have fallen to the floor if it were not for Cisco holding the back of the chair. "Hi, I'm Kid Flash." He said, sending a wink to her.
"Nayara." She said, smiling at him.
"Do you like guys in masks?" Wally asked her.
Nayara held back a sarcastic reply. "I have a boyfriend." Nayara answered with full sincerity in her voice.
"Are you pulling the I have a boyfriend card on me?" Wally asked her.
"Nope." Nayara answered, shaking her head. She pulled out a phone and showed him a picture of her and Peter. "That's my boyfriend, Peter." Nayara answered before putting back in her pocket. "Sorry, you were too slow." Nayara joked.
"Ohh, that was a brilliant burn." Cisco said, looking at Nayara. Nayara high fived him.
Wally coughed a little. "But that doesn't mean we can't be friends." Nayara said smiling at him. "I think it is very considerate of you to ask me since I presume you find me pretty. I should say that you do not lack attractiveness neither, but I love my boyfriend. He has stolen a piece of my heart." Nayara said to Wally, before smirking at him.
"She is brutal some times." Cisco whispered to Barry.
"You haven't seen nothing yet." Barry whispered back.
. . .
Nayara sat near an empty dock that was a little far from the city. She sighed at the smell of the water. She looked down at the water, as she lifted her arm a little bit. A few bubbles of water flew up in the air. They danced around Nayara, chasing each other.
Nayara sighed, thinking about what Barry had told Batman. The same lie that Steve had told to protect her. She was hoping that he would be better. She knew that he healed faster than normal human being due to his serum, so that at least eased her worries.
As she was starting to remember the face he had given her after he had found Loki, something moved in the water. Nayara stood up, the bubbles of water dropping. She looked around, not seeing anything. She relaxed a little bit.
However, she saw a person within the water. She was about to jump when a voice caught her attention. "Nayara?" someone said to her. Nayara looked over her shoulder at a boy around her age. "I'm Wally, a friend of Barry's." Wally said to her.
Nayara walked up to him, smiling at him. "Hi, I'm Nayara. Nice to meet you." Nayara said, walking closer to him.
"Barry was looking for you." Wally said. "Do you maybe sometime want to maybe go and get something to eat with me?" Wally asked her, hoping that maybe the girl would say yes to Wally even if he was not dressed up. What he didn't know what Nayara knew he was behind the mask.
"Umm...as friends, right? It's just I'm dating some guy." Nayara said, playing along the idea that Wally had of her.
"Yeah. Yeah." Wally said to her. Nayara nodded in return, accepting the offer.
. . .
Steve sighed, knocking the door of the Frosts' apartment. Emma opened it, shocked to see Steve behind the door. "Is Nayara here? I need to talk to her." Steve said, playing with his dog tags that he had inside his pocket.
"No, sorry." Emma said, before letting Steve enter. "What is for?" Emma asked him.
"I need to talk to her about something." Steve said, looking at Emma. Emma nodded at him. "I also have to thank her about something." Steve told her.
"Well, I think I can carry the message." Emma told Steve. "I'm her guardian after all." She added.
"I know." Steve sighed. "Do you know when she would be back?" Steve asked her. Emma shook her head. Steve sighed, passing a hand through his hair. He knew that the woman was lying, and that she knew really well the truth about Nayara. Tony had been trying to find her but it was almost like she had disappeared out of thin hair.
"Come on, Steve. Spit it out. I might not have spent that much time around you, but I know an anxious man when I see one. You are like some of my co-workers when they know I'm about to yell at them." Emma said, crossing her arms.
"Nayara has gone missing, Emma. I can't find her anywhere on the scans." Steve told her. "I asked Peter and he said that the last time he saw her was before she went to say goodbye to Barry and Kara. Now she has gone missing." Steve informed her.
Emma was getting tired of the loud anxious thought in Steve's head. He would have been quite in front of her, but now it did not mean his thoughts were. He knew what Nayara dropping off his dog tags meant. He knew what the letter meant, and all he wanted to do was make sure she was okay. Maybe she could have returned to her own world without a second thought, or maybe she had official ran away. There were lot possibilities that he did not know which one was true. One thing was for sure, Nayara had returned the dog tags, fully knowing the meaning it and it scared Steve.
"She left." Emma sighed, holding the bridge of his nose. She raised her look at Steve whose face fell. "She left my home and hasn't returned since. I don't know where she is." Emma lied.
"Why didn't you come to us?" Steve asked her.
"Oh, I wonder. Maybe because I didn't want to get Nayara involved with you all. Especially since what happened with that guy you detained. Nayara would not speak about you after that, and I had to question Barry for answers." Emma snapped at Steve. "You would have put her in a cell just because she saved a life that nobody wanted to safe." Emma added, glaring at Steve.
"I would have never put her in a cell." Steve told her.
"How do I know that? That is all what people seem to talk about. Putting innocents in jail just because they hold a gift or dress up to safe others. Yes, she knew who it was, but she left all her belief behind because she knew what was right. What she learned from you." Emma said to him. "That kid admired you. She would always tell me that it doesn't matter if she got in trouble. All she wanted you to be okay and help you. Help you. How do you think she felt when you turned your back on her?" Emma questioned Steve, narrowing her eyes at him.
"How do you think she felt when you looked at her like she was nothing. She felt guilty. So guilty. She thinks you hate her, even if she was willing to put her life for yours instead. That is the reason why I sent her away. To avoid all that. I don't want to put her in a casket ever." Emma yelled at Steve.
"I never said that I hated her." Steve cut in.
"You never said that you didn't either." Emma snapped back. She took deep breaths. "She is a kid. Steve. You are her hero. How would you feel if you did a decision that maybe your hero wouldn't approve? Huh? Of course, you would kept it silent. In fear that he might not approve or accept you." Emma explained to him.
"I always accepted her. When she life about who she was. Where she was from." Steve told her.
"She never lied of who she was, Rogers. She kept things to herself because she knew you didn't like lies. She cherished your trust so much that while you were complaining about her helping Loki that you were destroying with one look." Emma said, pressing her finger against Steve's chest. "She left, Steve. I sent her away to protect her, because I'm willing to do anything to protect my daughter." Emma whispered to Steve.
Steve clenched his jaw. "I guess there is one thing in common we share, Nayara's safety." Steve told her. "Because I'm willing to do anything to protect her." Steve added. He was telling the truth. He would have moved earth and sea to protect Nayara. "And I would have never allowed her to be put in a cell. I would have fought anybody because I know that even though Nayara is not from here, she is more of a person than me or you." Steve told Emma. "Why wouldn't you call the police?" Steve sighed.
Emma scoffed at him. "Really? How do I explain to them who Nayara is? Huh? If I file a report they would start searching, and they would get her. They would question her non-stop. I'm protecting her Steve." Emma snapped at him.
"I'm protecting her too." Steve told her.
"How?" Emma asked him.
"By hiding her gift from anybody else. I know what they do to people who have her gift. I know what they would do if they find out about her powers who I have seen with my own eyes. I'm trying to protect her from HYDRA, SHIELD and the Avengers. I have always been protecting her!" Steve yelled at Emma, tired of listening to the woman complaining about how he did not care for the girl, when he did.
Emma's face paled. "What are you talking about?" Emma asked him.
Steve looked at her unsure. "What do you mean?" He asked her.
"What do you mean about her powers?" Emma asked him, with urgency in her voice. Steve did not answer, not knowing what the woman would do if she found out. Emma glared at him. "What did you say about her powers?" Emma repeated with a deadly threatening voice.
She was about to push Steve to the wall to find out herself when the blonde answered her question. "She is a mutant. She can control water." Steve answered in a voice so low that it could have been a whisper. "If you try to do anything to her-" Steve started but Emma shook her head.
"Mutants stick together, Captain." Emma said to Steve. "That's impossible, how did-" Emma was about to question but Steve gave her the answer.
"When she was kidnapped by Zemo. Zemo was about to shoot me, and she just used her powers against him. She snapped." Steve explained. "Nobody else knows. I haven't told anybody. I have been trying to keep it secret to-" Steve said to her.
"To protect her." Emma finished. "I know where she is, but I'm not going to tell you Steve. All you need to know is that she is safe, far from here. I sent her away because we both know what is about to come." Emma sighed, taking a seat on the couch.
"I need to explain to her that I'm not mad at her." Steve told Emma.
"I can't tell you where she is." Emma whispered to him. Steve sighed at the answer. "She is safe though." She quickly added. This at least eased Steve's nerves. Nayara was safe, at least now he can sleep calmly at night knowing that the young girl was somewhat safe.
