29 | THE FATE OF MUTANTS

BARRY HELPED EMMA put the decorations up in the walls. "Is Kara getting the cake?" Barry asked her.

"If she doesn't eat it first." Emma told Barry, smiling at him. "Where is Nayara, by the way?" Emma asked her.

"Oh Logan said that he was giving her surprise today." Barry told Emma. Emma rolled her eyes. "She is a good kid, you know. She really admires you." Barry told her, as she fixed another decoration.

"And I do admire her as well. She is very brave, and resilient. I don't know what it must feel like ending in another world, with nobody to help you." Emma told Barry, knowing that he now knew the whole story. "Thank you for helping around the house though, and for looking after Nayara." Emma told him.

"She did certainly take the entire thing well so far. I mean, I have been in different earth but within my universe." Barry told Emma. The blonde looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "That sounded weird, huh?" Barry asked her.

Emma raised her hands. "At this point, nothing sounds weird anymore. I got a girl who shoots laser through her eyes, and an another one from a different world living in my house. Then I have seen a man run at very high speed who comes from a different world as well. I'm not surprised anymore." Emma told him. "At this point an alien invasion is something normal." She joked.

"You know, Nayara might be too shy to tell you this to your face, but she does admire you. She is really happy you are in her life and she cares for you." Emma told him. She looked down at her watch. "Where is Kara anyway?" Emma asked him. In return Barry shrugged.

. . .

Nayara smiled widely as she was raised higher into the sky. "This is awesome. I have always wanted to fly." Nayara said, smiling at Kara who was holding her bridal style. "Thank you for this." Nayara told her.

Nayara had countless times told Kara how she would have loved to fly. Now Kara was granting Nayara her wish by flying her around New York. However, this was short lived when somebody popped in front of them.

"Okay, this isn't safe at all." Tony told them from inside his mask. Nayara frowned at his sight. "I thought you were scared of heights, Nayara." Tony pointed out.

Nayara's frown deepen. "How the hell do you know that?" Nayara asked him. Supergirl tighten her hold on her in case the man in the Iron Man suit tried to take her away from her. "We were just pacing by. Shouldn't you be doing Avenger stuff?" Nayara asked him quickly.

Tony rolled his eyes inside his suit. "Oh, I was, but turns out that when I'm leaving I see Nayara being flown around New York with a person who still haven't reveal itself." Tony said, pointing at Supergirl. The man was indeed about to go to do an Avenger stuff, when he saw the girl. He thought she was in peril, but clearly, she wasn't. Now he clearly had to deal with Steve telling him that Nayara was fine and that this call was pointless.

Before Kara could reply, Nayara was quick to do so. "You see, she is a superhero. Superheroes don't reveal their identity. It's in superhero 101 surviving guide." She sarcastically answered. "Now, you know that the world is not going to safe itself. Right?" Nayara asked him.

Tony held back a comment before Supergirl flew quickly away from him. Tony sighed, watching Nayara go with Supergirl. While she left, Nayara happily waved goodbye at him. "Steve, I have no idea how you have the patience to deal with her. She is a ball of sarcasm." Tony said on his suit.

"Have you met yourself, Tony?" Steve asked him.

"That really hurt my feelings, Rogers." Tony replied back. "Are you sure that I should leave her with that blonde in a red cape?" Tony asked Steve.

"Yeah, she is alright." Steve told him. "Unless you want to deal with a complaining, sarcastic Nayara after you take her away from Supergirl." Steve pointed out to him. He knew that Nayara would snap back at Tony telling him that she was fine and safe with Kara Danvers; which was the whole truth.

"Actually, no." Tony told him. "Did you know she twisted my words, Steve? I had to tell Thor that I didn't thought he was stupid. I had to apologize! Because she tricked me. And Thor? Oh, Thor said 'she was such a ball of sunshine, I now know why Steve likes her company so much. All she does is compliment my fighting techniques and tell me how I'm such a good avenger.' Can you believe that?" Tony said to him as he flew. Steve chuckled in response.

"She is a harmless kid." Steve answered to her.

. . .

Nayara was put down by Kara a few blocks away. The brunette's hair was everywhere, causing Kara to laugh. "You are big dork." Kara said, shaking her head.

"I wasn't too heavy, was I? Because you have super strength and all." Nayara said, feeling a little self-conscious. Kara shook her head.

"Light as a feather." Kara told her. "Ready to go home?" Kara asked her.

Nayara nodded. "Up, up and away!" She said, pointing to the sky as she tried to pose. Kara let out a loud laugh as she held the side of her chest.

However, it was soon short lived because of a loud roar. As an instinct, Kara ran closer to Nayara and put her behind her. The ground started to shake before another roar was heard. Nayara ran to the side of the street and looked at the chaotic site. She let out an excited yell when she saw who it was.

"It is the Hulk! Yeah!" Nayara said, looking at the sight before her. She narrowed her eyes and saw that it was actually the Red Hulk, again. She frowned, seeing how from a distance a helicopter was coming their way.

"I'm defiantly taking you home." Kara said to her.

Nayara watched how then the Red Hulk had pushed Hulk to the ground and was hitting him. The Red Hulk was about to punch him again when Nayara decided to step in. Before Kara knew it Nayara was already running to the action. She took a rock from the debris and threw it at the Red Hulk.

She then tried again. "Let him go, you red thing!" Nayara scream, successfully hitting the Red Hulk's eye. The Red Hulk stood up and walked to Nayara. "I should have thought this through." She mumbled to herself. The Red Hulk roars at her. Nayara quickly avoid a punch and started to race to where she had come from. However, before she could reach it, a red hand appears in front of her.

Nayara due to the ground shaking, fell back to the floor. The Red Hulk was about to hit her when a green hand stopped him. The Hulk stood up and punched him, sending him flying a couple of feet away.

Nayara looked up to Hulk with a small scared smile. "Thank you, are you okay?" Nayara said to him. Hulk did not reply. Hulk lifted his hand, and Nayara hesitantly took it. Well, she took a strong hold of one of his fingers and patted.

The quietness soon ended when there was another roar. The Red Hulk ran to them. Nayara looked up to the Hulk. "Hulk, smash!" Nayara said to the Hulk. As she watched she took a few steps away. Hulk fought him and in a smooth movement defeated the Red Hulk. "The heroes always win." Nayara whispered to herself.

"Send him all you got." She heard a man said. When she narrowed her eyes, she saw it was a SHIELD agent.

"He hasn't done anything wrong." Nayara told him, glaring at him.

The man pointed at her. "Take her away." He said, ordering people to get her. Nayara ran away and stood in front of the Hulk.

"Let him go." She yelled at the top of her lungs. The Hulk turned around her and saw her. He roar behind her. She ignored the shaking in her hands. "He saved the entire city. He is a hero, not the villain. The real villain is that Red Fake Hulk you got there." Nayara screamed.

She turned to Hulk and raised her hands in defeat. "It's okay." Nayara whispered to Hulk. She was about to turn around when somebody shot near her. Nayara fell to in panic, and this only worsen the situation. Nayara covered her ears at hearing the loud roar that followed.

In that moment she regretted entering the crossfire.

The Hulk jumped over her and send a few cars to where from the person had shoot. Then he looked down at Nayara who opened her eyes to see a green hand. She screamed loudly in panic. Then she felt herself being lifted up from the floor. When she looked up she saw that Hulk was looking at her.

Then suddenly, she felt herself jump into the air, again and again. She presumed that Hulk was running away from the authorities. She thought it was nice of him to at least take her away, because she knew that he thought he was protecting her.

After a few minutes, Nayara was finally put in the floor. Nayara looked up to the Hulk who was kneeling down to look at her. "Thank you big guy." Nayara told him, standing up. "I'm okay, see." Nayara said as she did a little circle. "Hulk hero." She said, pointing at him. "Hulk good." She added.

The said hero nodded at her. "Well, where do we have here. It's nice to see you again, Nayara." Tony said, landing next to them. The Hulk roared to him. "Come on Bruce, we got to go." Tony said, taking off his mask.

"No Banner! Hulk!" The Hulk said, pointing at himself.

"Yeah, he is Hulk." Nayara said, sending a look to Tony.

"Hulk." Hulk said, giving a smile to Nayara and pointing at her. "Little girl. Me Hulk." He quickly added.

"Okay, time to go home, kiddo." Tony told her. He approached her and when he was about to take her hand, Hulk roared and punched Tony out of the way. Nayara covered her mouth in shock. She then saw Kara land in front of them. The blonde flinched when she saw Tony collide against a tree.

"Hulk protect." Hulk yelled at Tony. Okay, Hulk is adorable. Nayara thought to herself.

"Hulk!" Nayara exclaimed, looking at him. Supergirl was about to approach her when she saw the look that Nayara was giving her. "Hulk, friend." Nayara said, walking slowly to Kara. Then she hugged her.

Kara waved softly to Hulk, not wanting to make any sudden movement. Then Tony flew to him and hit with a needle. Tony pushed both girls out of the way as the Hulk transformed back into Bruce Banner.

Tony turned to Nayara, pointing at her. "You know, there are better ways of fixing this mess. Like asking him kindly to follow. Now he would remember this and would not trust you. Hulk is smarter than you think." Nayara told Tony. She walked closer to Kara. "If you excuse us, I got to go home and eat some cake." Nayara added, waving goodbye to Tony.

Tony put his mask up, shaking his head as he dialed a number. "I'm telling Steve. Your kid is mean, so mean." Tony said to Steve.

"Are you done? I got a party to get to." Steve told him with a tired voice.

. . .

Nayara stopped in front of the apartment and knocked on it. Nobody answered it. Nayara took out her keys and opened it. She jumped when she heard people scream her name. Her face paled slightly as she ran to hide behind Kara. Her action made Barry chuckle.

"I love the fact that when you get scared you just run behind Kara for protection." Barry said, hugging them both. "Happy Birthday, Nayara." Barry told her, nodding to the people inside.

"Logan!" Nayara said, smiling at the X-Men. She hugged him. "I loved the present, and X-Men suit. Like the original one. It's brilliant." Nayara told him, smiling at him. She smiled at Bobby, and Professor X.

"What took you so long?" Emma asked her.

"Oh you wouldn't believe it, I met the Hulk. Well, I tried to protect him from the Red Hulk by throwing rocks and him. Then Hulk took me out of harm's way and punched Tony in the face because he thought he was protecting me. How cool is that?" Nayara told Emma. Emma dropped her drink in shock and Barry was quick to catch it.

"At this point I'm not surprised." Logan told Emma, shaking his head. "I'm going to get a drink." Logan said, walking away and silently calmed that Nayara was doing fine after encountering the Hulk.

"Have you ever fought him? The Hulk I mean." Nayara told Logan, smiling at him.

"I almost die." Logan told her. Nayara smiled at him.

"Good thing you heal quickly then." Nayara said. She stopped when she heard a knock. Nayara walked to the door and was shocked to see Steve Rogers. "Good to see you, Steve." Nayara told him.

"I came to give my present to the birthday girl." Steve told her.

Nayara gave him a kind smile as she accepted the box that was given to her. "Come in." She said but stopped realizing who was inside. "Before you come in, I must ask you to keep a secret. Part of my family is inside." She whispered to him. "They are mutants." She whispered, this part quitter than the previous one.

"I think I can keep another secret. One that doesn't involve water." Steve told her, sending her a knowing look. Nayara returned the smile, and let him in. "Did you find out what it was?" Steve asked her.

"What?" Nayara whispered to him.

"What caused the mutation." He told her.

Nayara shrugged. "I'm actually quite happy about it, even it means I am target like the rest of thousands of mutants." Nayara told Steve. She sat down on the couch and opened the present. She looked at him with shocked eyes. "Dog tags? They are yours." Nayara told him.

"They are mine, and now they are yours. Do you remember when you were telling me about had happen and about your world?" Steve asked. The brunette nodded at him. "Well, now you are part of this world. You are part of my world. You know, no matter what Sharon had thought or others too, the fact still reminds that you helped me and you didn't ask for anything. You are a friend. A friend who know is part of this world." Steve told her. Nayara closed her eyes briefly trying to contain her tears.

To some this present was useless, but it meant so much to her. It not only came from Steve's heart but it held so much meaning. At least for the two of them. Nayara sniffed, smiling at Steve. "You know you are brilliant at giving gifts right." Nayara whispered.

Steve motioned her to continue opening the present. She saw a book, when she took it she saw it was a diary. "Writing helped me when I woke up, I hope it does the same." Steve told her. "And you forgot this." He told her, getting the small bracelet that was under the diary. The said blonde presented a bottom and it turned on, showing a shield that resembled Steve.

Nayara stood up in excitement. "Is that what I think it is? Is it a shield? Like the hologram one in the comics!" Nayara said, holding back a scream. Steve passed it to her. "Does it like come back to me after I throw it. I'm going to try to try it." Nayara said to him.

"No." Steve said in panic. "You will break the entire house." Steve told her. Nayara smiled at him.

"Nayara, where are you?" Emma yelled from the kitchen. She walked to the living room to see how the girl had stood on the sofa and was trying to imitate Steve's pose.

"I'm Miss America!" Nayara said in a deep voice. Steve chuckled at her, shaking her head. She was still a kid after all.

"Hello, Steve." Emma told him, greeting him. "You got her the shield?" Emma asked her. Steve nodded, not looking at the woman knowing that she would be scowling at him afterwards.

"Yeah, but Logan got me a motorcycle! I have to learn how to drive it though." Nayara said to her, smiling at her. Emma raised her hands in surrender.

"I think the shield is fine." Steve told Emma.

"I surrender." Emma said, walking back to where she came from.

"Come on, Steve. I want to present to you Professor X. He helped me when I was lost you know. I arrived to his office telling him I knew him and gave him my comic. Can you belive it?" Nayara said, walking quickly to the kitchen. When she entered, Barry had pushed her out of the way. Kara had blown some ice, and was showing off Bobby her powers.

"That was brilliant." Bobby said, pointing at Kara.

Nayara looked at Steve from over a shoulder trying to contain the laughter. "It always cracks me up when she does it." Nayara whispered to Steve. The blonde looked at Barry who nodded at him.

"Put the news channel, Scott said its urgent." Hank told Emma. Nayara walked to the living room and turned on the television. Her heart stopped a few seconds when she saw who was talking.

"Who is that?" Barry asked Nayara, seeing all the sour faces.

"Senator Kelly." Nayara answered him.

"I'm excited to say that many of my fellow colleagues have joined the idea of new regulations. The Sentinel program in that I endorsed, because I know it would keep you all safe, have been revised. I would make it my life goal to bring peace and safety to the citizens of New York, and across America." Senator Kelly said. "Today, a young girl was attacked by a green monster. The Hulk." Senator Kelly said. On the top of the screen, footage of where Nayara was being held by Hulk was shown. "Imagine if this was your child." He said, pointing at the audience.

"That is a lie! He was protecting me from the idiotic Red Hulk! They should not have let the Red Hulk free in the first place." Nayara cut him, glaring at the television.

Steve's face paled when he heard Nayara said 'me'. "You walked into the two hulks fighting." Steve whispered to her.

"Yeah, I threw rocks at his head. I think I hit his eye a couple of times." Nayara pointed out.

"The Sentinel program along with new hero regulations should help everyone's safety. Any questions?" Senator Kelly asked.

"Would these regulations be also for masked heroes?" A reporter asked him.

"Yeah. Including the famous Avengers. They should respond to crisis with the same level of integrity as actual officials. If they commit a crime, they must resource to the law. However, we cannot make that happen if their identity is secret." Senator Kelly answered.

"Since when is saving people a crime?" Barry asked.

"Integrity? Your insulting America's hero." Nayara mumbled under her breath.

"What about the mutants, sir? Would they receive the same treatment as the Avengers?" Other reporter asked.

"They would have a separate treatment. Since they are more dangerous, we would relocate them in a quarantine, until we found a cure for them. The cure is already being processed." Senator Kelly said. "Every child and adult, Avenger or not, would be on a list of the government to endure the safety of everyone. No more questions, thank you." Senator Kelly said.

Nayara's blood was on fire. She tightened her fist as she glared daggers to the television. The fate of the mutants was at risk, and she knew that war near.
