17 | THE PURPLE SOCK
NAYARA LAUGHED AS she held her stomach. Peter was laughing next to her, shaking his head. "You are telling me that you were terrified of the Grinch?" Peter asked her. The girl nodded at him. Peter's laugh was contagious, which was why she was laughing because of him.
"I was terrified. He creeps me out. Just like E.T." Nayara answered him. "Love Steven Spielberg, but that alien gave me nightmares." Nayara added, taking some of the popcorn was that in the bowl between the two.
Peter chuckled at this. "I'm scare of clowns." Peter told her. Nayara smiled at him.
"I have never been scare of them." Nayara said. "Thanks for coming by the way." Nayara added, before reaching out to take a sip of her water.
Peter gave her a giant smile. The ones that make every girl's knee grew weak. Just because it showed true happiness, and this just made Nayara happy. "I mean, you texted me saying there was an emergency because you didn't know which film to watch tonight and you needed my help." Peter said, shaking his head at the brunette.
"Well, I needed your help. Unless you, mister, are too busy doing hero stuff." Nayara said, resting her head on the back of the couch as she looked at Peter, who was sitting one the opposite side of the bowl.
Peter laughed at her.
It has been a long time since he had laughed this long, and with somebody.
A long time.
Peter turned to face her fully. "Well, I will have come here anyway." Peter told her, giving her a small smile. "Because not matter what is happening outside, you will always be my priority." Peter told her.
"So, you are telling me that all those people out there are non-important?" Nayara asked, smirking at him. Peter nodded at her with confidence.
"Not when I'm with you." Peter confessed to her. Nayara leant and gave him a quick kiss on his cheek, leaving the boy frozen on his spot. Nayara quickly flee with the excuse she had to refill the popcorn. Peter hummed a response to her, as he watched her go.
Nayara leant on the wall opposite to the fridge. She rested her head on the wall, blaming herself for forgetting about Peter. Forgetting that she can not get involved with him because he was destined to be with somebody else. She sighed, waiting to make new popcorn.
Peter felt his phone buzz, and he quickly stood up from his seat. He silently cursed when he saw it was Aunt May. "Hi, Aunt May." Peter said through the phone.
Peter sighed, pacing around the room. "Where on earth are you Peter Parker? I was about to call on the police! You are two hours late!" Aunt May said through the phone with pure fury. Peter checked down his watch, noticing he the time.
"Aunt May, I'm fine. I'm with a friend. I didn't know what time it was." Peter told her.
"You have a watch for that." Aunt May told him, shaking her head. Peter sighed again, seeing Nayara come to the room. She saw she was taking on the phone and she mooned walk back to the kitchen, giving the boy some privacy. This made Peter laugh. "Why are you laughing? This isn't funny at all." May added.
"I'm sorry, Aunt May. I got distracted." Peter told her. "I'm really sorry. I will there in a few." Peter told her.
"Where are you this late, Peter?" May asked her nephew.
"I'm at Nayara's." Peter said, scratching his neck.
May silently cursed, and thought of her next words. "Oh, okay." She answered. "Will you please get home? I am worried. I was worried." May told Peter. Peter nodded at her, even though he couldn't see her.
"I will Aunt May. I promise. I'm sorry." Peter said before hanging up the phone. Nayara walked back to the living room, looking at Peter with a shameful look.
"I'm sorry if I kept you too long. I should have checked the time." Nayara told him.
"I forgot." Peter told her. "I forgot to look at the time too. I will get going. If not my Aunt is going to kill me." Peter said, going to get his jacket. Nayara watched him, a smile creeping into her face. "Thanks for the popcorn." Peter told her.
Nayara shrugged. "Me and Emma are baking this weekend. So, if you come over you may get some of my special cookies. As a warning, they might be slightly burnt because I don't usually bake." Nayara joked, causing Peter to laugh.
"Alright." Peter told her. Nayara was glued to her spot, still anxious about the kiss she had given him. Peter saw her standing on the living and walked over to her. He stood a few brief seconds, frozen in front of her before he hugged her. Nayara smile, hugging him back. What she didn't expect was that Peter will kiss her cheek while pulling away from the hug, running away from the teen. He too feared his reaction.
Peter sighed, shaking his head. "Great job, Parker. Just great. Run away. Run away from the girl who you had been crushing on for three months." Peter whispered to himself as he walked to the elevator. When the elevator opened the pushed him slightly while getting out of the elevator. Peter looked at the man who he thought he had seen in Nayara's computer one day. He frowned, thinking he was mistaken. Oh, he was wrong.
Nayara sighed. She froze when he saw a person near the door. She frowned, recognizing quickly the god she had saved last year. The only difference now was that his long black hair was now a light short brown. Loki approached the girl. "What are you doing here?" She asked him, looking him with confusion. "Loki, what are you doing here?" She asked again.
The man approached her. "You have to leave." He said with urgency. Nayara frowned, not understanding why he was saying those things. "You have to leave now, Nayara! Now!" He told her. He was warning her. He was warning her about something, but Nayara did not listen.
"You aren't real." Nayara whispered, walking through him. She walked closer to the door about to lock it. When she was about to lock it, she was pushed back by it. The force was such that she felt to the floor. She looked up to see what had happened her breathing stopped when she saw a man with piercing brown eyes. She stood up and kicked him, but he stopped her and punched her in the nose.
Nayara felt to the floor. Her entire vision was a blur. Everything seemed to move from side to side, as if she was in a boat. The girl turned back to the man who was silently closed the door. He took off his cap, and his coat. He pulled out a gun, and aimed it Nayara. When he did, he saw silver the metal hand.
"You got to be kidding me." She whispered to herself. She stood up with difficulty, and raised her hand over her head. "Okay, look we can do this very peacefully. There is no need to use that." Nayara told him, pointing at the gun. The man remained silent. "So, you don't speak, huh?" She joked, even though she knew he did. He spoke almost every language. The man shoot the behind Nayara, almost shooting her.
Nayara stiffen. She knew what he was capable off. She just had to reach her phone and call Steve, or even Emma. She sighed, looking at him with a small smile. "Good night, huh?" She said before taking around to her room upstairs. She ran quickly to her room, and locked it. She knew it will last forever, but it will give her enough time.
She dialed Steve's number, but he wouldn't pick up.
BOOM!
Nayara jumped, and dialed Logan's number. "Hello?" He heard him from the other line.
"Tell Emma I love her." Nayara said through the phone. "The Winter Soldier is here. He is here, and I need help." Nayara whispered to him.
BOOM!
"Where the hell are you?" Logan asked her.
Nayara ran to her library and removed a book of Harry Potter. Then she pressed the alarm. The loud siren blasted throughout the entire apartament. The man groaned in annoyance and he punched a whole through the door. Nayara hid the alarm back on its place.
She looked down at the phone before, throwing it to the nearest wall.
It broke.
BOOM!
Nayara looked up to the man with a big glare. You don't scare me, soldier. Nayara thought to herself, but it was a lie. She was horrified. The man picked her up by the throat before pressing something into her neck. Everything started to blend into one in Nayara's eyes. Everything.
In a matter of seconds she was out. He picked her up, and with one hand he pressed his ear comm. "I got the girl. Mission accomplished." He said, before walking out of the apartment. Leaving no trance behind of his arrival. Or so he thought.
. . .
Nayara opened her heavy eyes, seeing a piece of fabric covering her entire face. She sighed, knowing she was in deep trouble. Probably on her way to her own death. Through the fabric she could see the man's arm shine. Great, cause of death. Winter Soldier, how nice. She sarcastically thought.
"Sabes, eres demasiado fastidioso. (you are vey annoying)" Nayara said to him in Spanish. She saw the Winter Soldier's arm move. She smiled to herself. "Alguien me puede explicar dónde estoy? A donde me van a llevar de vacaciones? Bahamas? Budapest? (Can somebody explain to me where am I? Are you guys taking me for a vacation? Bahamas? Budapest?)" Nayara asked. She sighed, shaking her head. The two drivers at the front looked at each other with a slight frown, not understanding the girl. "Por favor, alguien me podría contestar? (can someone answer me?)" Nayara asked again.
"Callate! (shut up)" The Winter Soldier yelled at the girl.
Nayara rolled her eyes at him, even though he could not see it. "Tu eres el que te deberías de callar. Yo soy como un loro, no me callo. Especialmente en estas circunstancias. Como esperas que una persona no se ponga nerviosa cuando tiene la cara tapada? (You should be the one to shut up. I am like a parrot. I don't shut up. Especially now, under these circumstances. How do you expect somebody not to be nervous when she has her face covered)" Nayara replied to him in Spanish.
"Te disparo si no te callas. (If you don't shut up, I will shoot you)" The Winter Soldier yelled at her.
Nayara sighed. "Okay, me callo (Okay, I will shut up now)" She replied back, not wanting to annoy him even further. Although she enjoyed doing it. She decided to play the confused part, just to gain herself sometime. She hoped it worked. "Nose porque ustedes me están raptando.(I don't undertand why you are kinnaping me.)" Nayara replied to them.
"Pues yo sí. (I do)" The Winter Soldier replied to her. Nayara sighed, resting back against the seat.
. . .
Steve rested his head on his hand, as he looked at the computer. He was waiting for a signal of Bucky Barnes to pop up. There have been no lead for months. Nayara reminded him that he was still under HYDRA's control, which meant he could be anywhere planning the murder of his next victim.
"Steve?" Tony called out for him. The blonde looked up from his screen, looking at the aging man. "It has come to my divine attention that little Nayara has not been as quiet as she usually with you." Tony told Steve. Steve shrugged at him. "There is something about her, but it isn't clicking." Tony added, looking at Steve for any reaction from him, but it never came.
"Well, why don't you talk to her then?" Steve asked him, his eyes still on the screen.
"Because I can't get her to say more than one sentence to me. Ever." Tony told him. "I'm concerned I'm loosing my spark." Tony added.
Steve scoffed at him. "I bet-" He stopped when the computer beeped, signaling the presence of James Buchanan Barnes. Steve stood up from his seat and shot down the computer before running out of the room, leaving a perplexed Tony.
"Great, now I'm getting ignored. Well, I will ignore him too." Tony said to himself, fixing his shirt.
. . .
Steve arrived at the empty house at the outskirts of New York. The sun was beginning to escape, leaving traces of red and orange across all surfaces. Steve held his shield close to him, the warnings of Nayara clear on his mind: He will kill you if he is asked too. He doesn't know you are his best pal yet, so please be careful Steve.
Steve open the door silently to the room. He stopped when he saw a shadow inside the room. The light from the outside hit the metal arm of the man, reflecting it against the walls. The Winter Soldier stood up from his seat and turned to face Steve. The blonde froze, and looked at him cautiously.
The Winter Soldier took out his mask. Steve took a long look at him. At the bear in his face, and the dark eyeliner under his eyes. "We just need to talk, Buck. This isn't you." Steve told him, looking at him with a grim face. The Winter Soldier shook his head, turning around. Steve stiffen.
"Don't trust him, Steve. It's a matter or death. Just please promise me you will not be tempted to trust him. Not while he is still working for them. Please, just promise me." Nayara told Steve.
"I promise." Steve told her. He looked at her behind the boxing sack. "Now, aim higher at your punch, okay?" Steve said to her.
"Okay, but just as long as you listen to me." Nayara told him before hitting the sack.
Steve replied that memory on the back of his mind. Nayara was right about the Winter Soldier. She was always right.
Bang!
The Winter Soldier pulled out his gun and aimed at Steve. Steve quickly covered himself with the shield before throwing it to his opponent. He caught it with ease. Steve ran towards him and pushed him against the wall.
The Winter Solider gave him a slight smirk. "We have her. We have the girl. We have Nayara." The Winter Soldier told him. Just the mere mention of that the Captain froze. This gave enough time for the Winter Soldier to deliver a good punch to his face. Steve got up from the froze, glaring at The Winter Solider. It was half a life, he was assigned to get her after he got the Captain. His assignment was clear: bring Captain America alive. He did not question the reasons. It was very rarely that he was asked to bring a target alive.
He had to do this quick so that he could get the girl right after and be done with all this. He was told that she was difficult to get; which will later appear to be the opposite.
Steve aimed a good punch at him quickly, tackled him on the floor. "Where do you have her?" He asked his lost best friend. The Winter Solider smirked before throwing another punch at the soldier, and pulling up a needle. He inserted it into the man's neck.
The only worry that was on Steve's mind that moment was Nayara.
. . .
Nayara groaned in annoyance when she was roughly pushed into a cold dark room. There were no windows what so ever, and the façade was starting to fall apart. Nayara looked at the Winter Soldier who moved apart to lead a man inside. Nayara stiffen when she saw a man who wore bright purple mask - which in her mind resembled a sock - to cover his face. His attire seemed like the one of knight, which combined with the sword next to him.
"That's her, huh?" The man who Nayara recognized said. The Winter Solider did not replied. He took out his sword, and pointed it at Nayara's throat. "Now, you have chatted with a mutual friend of ours, and sadly you got taken away. Now, you will take. Or I will slice your throat open." The man told her.
Nayara looked at him with no fear what so ever. "No hablo ingles (I don't speak English)" Nayara told Baron Zemo.
The Winter Solider looked at Zemo before kneeling down to the girl. "Yo sí, así que habla. (I do, so speak.)" The Winter Soldier told Nayara. She reminded quiet. "Los dos sabemos que si nos puedes entender, porqueentendiste a nuestra amiga perfecta mente. La conoces, Sharon? (We both now that you can understand us, because you understood our friend perfectly. Sharon. You know her?)" The Russian Soviet told her.
Nayara smirked at him. "No sabía que era amiga de un soviético, y de un calcetín. (I didn't know she was friends with a soviet and a sock.)" Nayara joked.
The Winter Soldier stood up, looking at Zemo. "She is no going to talk." The Solider whispered to Zemo.
The man turned to look at him and nodded. "You are clear, Soldier." The man told him, and the Winter Solider left like the ghost he is. Zemo stood tall in front of the girl. He placed his sword back into his belt. He then slapped her on the cheek. Nayara glared at him before delivering a good punch at the man.
Zemo took a few steps away from her. "Sharon warned us about you. About your courage. Let's see if that brain of yours works under pressure." Zemo said, motioning some guards to take her. Nayara did not fight them, but followed them. If she wanted to survive, she had to stay calm. Zemo knew that there was one thing that could make her break, and that was hurting someone she cared about. He was planning to use their other hostage as leverage.
. . .
Nayara was forced down into the floor outside the hidden HYDRA base. She relaxed a little when the smell of the sea hit her nose. However, she stopped when she saw somebody knelt a few meters opposite to her. They were shackled to the ground, their head facing the floor.
Zemo walked to the man, taking off his mask. Nayara froze when she saw it was Steve. "Now, mentors tend to become a important figure in one's life." Zemo said, taking out a gun. He looked at Nayara. "I want you to tell me everything you know about us, The Avengers, and about Sharon Carter. You know something, and that is a threat. You know how HYDRA treats its threat?" Zemo asked her.
"They kill them." Nayara answered him.
Zemo nodded in approval of her response. He knelt down next to the Captain who was fighting against the restrains. "Let's see if she sells you out. If she doesn't, then she dies. You get to see it for yourself. What a join." Zemo whispered to Steve.
Zemo walked to Nayara. "Get away from her!" Steve shouted from his place. Zemo enjoyed the fury in his eyes.
"Now, Nayara. You tell me what you know or he gets hurt." Zemo whispered to her.
Nayara shook her head. "I know nothing." She lied, glaring at him. "I don't know what you are talking about, purple sock!" She said before spitting to his face. The man shook his head before walking to Steve Rogers.
"What do you know about Sharon Carter?" Zemo asked again.
"Nothing!" She yelled in fury. Zemo nodded at her before taking out his sword and punching Steve with the handle of it. Nayara flinched when she saw it. "I am not involved with the Avengers!" She yelled at him. Zemo punched Steve again on his face, just like he previously had.
Blood was dripping down Steve's face. Nayara looked down at the floor, and she was forced to look back at the wounded soldier to the the HYDRA agents' hold on her face. Tears were begging to form in her eyes as she saw Steve being punched repeatedly.
Zemo stopped, letting the soldier take a few necessary breath. "Now, I will ask again. This time you will answer. If not he dies." Zemo told Nayara.
Nayara let her tears drop down her face as she looked at Steve. "Don't let him-" Steve started but was cut off by another hit from Zemo.
Nayara looked at him with fury. "Why don't you let him go and see who wins the fight? A good fist fight will settle it!" Nayara yelled at Zemo. Zemo pointed his gun at Steve, and this made her quiet down.
"What do you know about Sharon Carter? What do you know about the Avengers? Now is your time." Zemo told her, pressing his finger lightly on the trigger.
Nayara looked at Steve in the eyes. She knew if she gave the information to him, hell will break loose. Nobody will trust her again, and she will be dead. She send Steve an apolengentic look. "I'm so sorry." She whispered, letting more tears fall.
Steve was expecting her to break. To tell Zemo all he wanted to know, but she didn't. "I will never tell you. I will never tell you nor any member of HYDRA or AIM. Even if I have to die, I will." Nayara told Zemo.
Zemo smirked under his mask.
Bang!
Zemo shot Steve in the torso, making Nayara scream. "No!" She yelled, her tears falling down her face. Zemo aimed his gun at Steve's head. "Please, no. No, please." Nayara begged him as he watched how Steve leant slightly forward.
As Zemo was about to pull the trigger, Nayara screamed. Agony and Anger mixed together in one giant scream, triggering giant waves. The waves grew massively and crashed against the HYDRA agents. Nayara screamed at the top of her lungs, making the waves more aggressive, knocking everything but the two heroes out of their path.
When Nayara let go of the scream, the sea returned to its peace. The water lost shape and fell down to the floor. Nayara looked at it confused. It was her power that had manifested.
Nayara quickly stood up, from her place seeing that nobody was left standing. She stopped in front of Zemo's unconscious body. She took a few steps back before delivering a big kick into his face. She then took out the keys from his pockets and removed the shackles on Steve.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." Nayara whispered looking down at the wound in the hero's torso. He stood up with difficulty, but nonetheless he did. Nayara had fresh tears in her eyes. "This is all my fault. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry." Nayara whispered to him looking at him with sadness.
"We have to get out of here, first okay." Steve told her. Nayara nodded. She followed him through the base, trying to stay out of the agents way. The alarm started to go off, signaling their escape. Nayara looked at Steve, before stepping in front of him. "I know where the exit is. I think." She told him.
"You think?" Steve asked her.
"Do you?" She asked him back.
"Lead the way." Steve sighed. Nayara ran quickly, fully knowing that Steve was till human and could easily bleed out. She stopped, when she saw the hall she had come in filled with agents.
"On three, run up ahead." A voice said next to her. Nayara turned around, seeing Loki. This time she did not questioned him. "One...two...three." He whispered, and Nayara pushed Steve up ahead. "Turn left. Then right." Loki told her, walking next to her. Nayara continued following his signals until they ended up at an hangar. "The second plane is already up running." Loki told her.
Nayara sighed, starting to walk towards it but stopped when she saw Zemo walking up the hangar. "Maybe that wasn't the best option." Loki whispered to her.
"Maybe?" She asked, looking at him. Steve looked at her curiously, not understand who the girl was talking to. Nayara noticed this and sighed. "They are blocking our way out." Nayara told Steve. From a far she saw a set up cars, and she looked at Steve over her shoulder. "I bet you know how to hotwire a car." She said to him. Steve let out a quiet chuckle before nodding. "Alright, you go ahead and start it. I'm going to get something." Nayara told him.
"What?" Steve asked her.
"Your shield." Nayara answered before running off.
"Are you seriously doing all this for a shield?" Loki asked her. Nayara did not replied. "First room to your right. It's a storage." Loki instructed her. She followed her instructions. "You know, I told you to run." Loki whispered to her.
"Well, I was freaked out by you just appearing out of nowhere. I ignored it and clearly it was a mistake." Nayara said, stopping when she saw the shield. She picked it up, frowning when she saw it was heavier than she expected. She picked it up and ran quickly to the car that Steve was hidden in. She co into the co-pilot seat and asked Steve to drive.
Just as they thought they were safe, a car started to shoot it. Steve speed up the car, looking at the incoming car behind them. A small idea pop into Nayara's head. "Go near the water." Nayara told him, seeing from her side the cost. "Go." She told him. Steve sighed, turning sharply to the right. He avoided the trees that were coming their way. He sped up, causing Nayara to be a little nauseous.
"Help is on your way. Minutes away." Loki told her from the back seat. She kept her eyes on the water. She wanted to make sure that the waves that attacked those men back in the base were not a coincidence. She closed her eyes briefly, arresting all the hanger and fear within her before letting all out. She concentrated, and it payed off.
A huge wave raised from the sea and collided with the car, making it crash. Nayara leant back on her seat, looking at it from over her shoulder. "You can't tell Tony or anybody about that." Nayara whispered to Steve. "About that wave. About this wave. Nothing." Nayara told Steve. Steve remained quiet and nodded. They continue rolling for a few minutes but Steve stopped it when he saw a quinn jett land in front of them.
The door opened it, revealing Wolverine and Emma on their costume. Nayara sighed, opening the door quickly and running towards the two. Emma pulled the girl into the tight hug. "Thank god you are okay." Emma told her, pulling her away so that he could check her. She regretted it the moment she saw her face.
Nayara did not let her time to question her. "Steve is in the car and he needs medical attention if not he dies." Nayara said to Emma. Emma closed her eyes briefly and nodded. Nayara was still holding Steve's shield, so she handed it to Emma before going back to get the wounded soldier. "Let's go, soldier." Nayara whispered to him. Steve groaned, and almost collapsed in Nayara's arms. "Please, don't give up on me now." She whispered. Wolverine ran to her aid, helping him into the quinn jet. She helped him into the medical bed, where Beast was already on his way to help.
The girl looked up to the furry man with worry. "He will survive all this, right?" She asked him, and he nodded. Nayara relaxed. She turned around briefly seeing a familiar face behind the shadows. Emma followed her gaze.
He was the one that was guiding us to you, Emma said to Nayara using her telepathy. Nayara walked towards Loki, looking at him with a small smile. "James Harrison," He said, presenting himself. Nayara gave him a smile before hugging him. The god of mischief was confused, but as soon as it came it was ended.
"Thank you, Loki." She whispered loud enough for only he to hear. She walked back to Emma, who was looking at her battered face. "I know, I got punched by a metal arm." Nayara told Emma.
