16 | TRAINING WITH UNCLE STEVE
NAYARA AVOIDED A punch from Steve. Before hitting him in the chest. She smiled feeling accomplished by it. However, it soon ended when she fell to the floor. "You might have been able to punch me but you have to keep your eyes on the target. Just one punch isn't going to cut it." Steve told her, before aiding Nayara up.
"I mean, I'm think I'm good if I'm ever attacked on the streets." Nayara told him. "You know, I feel like a Power Ranger." Nayara told Steve. "You guys have that in this world, right?" Nayara asked him.
Before Steve could reply, Carol had cut in. "Why are you asking if we have that here?" Carol asked Nayara. Nayara stopped, and shared a panicked look with Steve. Carol was oblivious to it.
Steve unwrapped his knuckles. "Because she used to watch it where she used to live." Steve told Carol. It was true.
"Tony called, something about a man with a metal arm you were looking for." Carol said, approaching the ring. "Teaching your little protege how to kick some?" Carol asked him. Nayara nodded proudly.
"Yeah." She said, smiling at Carol.
"Oh, and I think you have somebody waiting for you outside. Emma." Carol told her.
"Alright." The young girl replied before she saw the blonde walk away.
Steve chuckled, seeing the girl watch the hero closely with awe. "You still don't believe she is actually standing in front of you, do you?" Steve asked her. Nayara hummed a positive response to is, confirming his question.
Nayara shook her head as she walked out of the ring. "I mean, she was my role model. I admire her so much. People underestimate her. I mean, she could defeat Thanos with just one punch, and he is pretty much the hardest villain to kill. He is more than six feet tall. A purple alien." Nayara explained. "She once has a decision to stop flying, and avoid the damaging effect that her powers were having on her, or accept it and help others. She didn't back down." Nayara explained. "This was in some of the issues, before they renewed it." Nayara quickly added.
"You seem to know a lot about her." Steve told her as he passed her a water.
Nayara nodded shyly. "I know pretty much everything there is to know about her, even if she doesn't know who am I." Nayara told him. She sat down on a bench, looking down at the floor. "It's like with Peter, he doubts himself when he shouldn't. I don't blame him though. We all doubt ourselves." Nayara added.
"Well you seem to get along more than previously." Steve told her.
Nayara picked up her bag. "We always get along, it's just that...I tend to keep my distance because if I get too close I know I might interfere with something." Nayara told Steve.
"With what exactly?" Steve asked her.
"I don't know. I'm still trying to figure it out." Nayara told him, walking towards the exit.
"You can't keep being scare of what might happen if you do get too close. You will be missing many opportunities and fun experiences if not. Maybe a good friend?" Steve told her. "You just have to just be prepare for the unknown." Steve told her.
"That sometimes scares me." Nayara admitted to him. She saw Emma standing next to her car. "I will see you later, Steve. Go and have fun trying to find the Winter Soldier. I heard he delivers a pretty hard punch." Nayara joked before entering the car.
Steve chuckled at her. He stopped when he saw Emma approach him. "Hello, Ms.Frost." Steve told her, greeting her.
She glared slightly Steve. "You know, I'm allowing this because it will help her, but I don't want you dragging her into a mess. I don't want what happened last year repeat itself. She is a kid." Emma told him.
Steve's face turned sourer. "I am aware of the possible repercussions, Ms.Frost. Nayara she is young and-" Steve but was cut by Emma.
"And she should life her life at the fullest. She shouldn't be stuck here or at home reaching your own work." Emma told Steve. Steve quieten down. "Last year I found searching stuff while canceling plans with me and her friends. Then I decided to find out for myself. She didn't said a word about." Emma stated.
Steve sighed. I know, Steve thought. "She is not the person to reveal secrets." Steve told her. "You are thinking of blackmailing me?" Steve asked her.
Emma shook her head, giving the man a sarcastic smile. "No. That is too low for me. I'm just reminding you that Nayara isn't a solider. She is a kid. She is young, and she looks up to you. She adores you, okay? So, please don't let her get involved in all this." Emma told Steve.
Steve nodded at her, catching site of Carol. "I will never let anything happen to her. I'm just training her so she can defend herself. It's for her own good." Steve said to her. "I know you care for her, and you are doing an amazing job at it. But you aren't the only one who is concern for her safety." Steve told her.
"Emma? Everything okay?" Nayara asked from inside her car.
"Yeah, just asking something." Emma told her before turning to him. "The last thing I want for her is to be disappointed and sadden. She cares for others more than she cares for herself, so please keep her on the line." Emma added before staring to walk into the car.
Nayara gave her a slight smile. "You were threatening him. Weren't you?" Nayara asked her.
Emma shook her head, backing up the car before taking off. "No." Emma told her. Nayara sighed, and looked at her. Emma sighed and nodded, defeated by the girl's look. They made a pack after Nayara returned home: they will never lied to each other again. And after that, for the first time since she had come to this new world she had open up to Emma. She had showed her inner self, something she decided to keep guarded after various fake friends throughout her own life.
Steve walked to Carol with a tired smile. "Who was that? I have seen her always picking up Nayara." Carol told Steve. She followed Steve inside the car. Steve remained deep in thought. "Steve, who was it?" Carol asked again.
"Her guardian." Steve told Carol.
"She is a good kid, you know." Carol told Steve.
"Can I ask you a favor?" Steve asked Carol. Carol nodded at him. "Actually, two." Steve added.
Carol chuckled at him. "Make up your own mind." Carol told him.
"Can you look after her for me? While I'm away." Steve asked her. His best friend nodded at her. "And the second...I was wondering if you could take Nayara on a plane ride. She has never been on one, and I'm pretty sure she will be one of the happiest person if you give her a ride or teach her something." Steve told her. Carol nodded at him. "You are her favorite hero." Steve told her.
"I thought that was you. The look of pride she gets its very hiralous. Tony and me were teasing her about it the other day." Carol replied.
Steve smiled at her. "Oh no. You win the contest." Steve told her.
"I didn't know that." Carol confessed to him.
"You will be surprised how much she adores you." Steve told her.
. . .
Nayara was sitting her room finishing some work, when she heard the alarm of the window next to her go off. The girl jumped out of her skin, and stood up quickly. She stopped when she saw it was Spiderman. She ran to her phone and turned it off.
She opened the window to Peter who has already taken off his mask. "What are you doing here?" Nayara asked him confused at his precense.
Peter shrugged. "Do I come on a bad time?" He asked her.
Nayara shook her head. "No, no. I was just doing some work." Nayara said, motioning to her desk. "I was just surprised. I wasn't expecting you." Nayara said as she looked back at Peter. "Oh, I'm a terrible host. Do you want water? tea? coffee? Or nothing? You can have nothing. Not in a negative way or anything. I mean, you might be passing by and all." Nayara rambled. She stopped quickly looking at Peter who was smiling widely at her.
"I'm good. I was just wondering if you wanted to go to the movies with me and Gwen, MJ...You aren't doing anything, right?" Peter asked her.
"Oh no. I will open my afternoon like a normally do. Alone and just sitting on my bed watching tv. I mean, it isn't bad and that just made me sound like...like...like a very lonely person. Which I'm not. I tend to go over to the school to visit some friend. Not Midtown but one that Emma volunteers at." Nayara said again.
Peter nodded at her. "I mean, that's good. I miss times like that." Peter told her.
"Oh, I bet. I mean being a hero and all. It's tiring even if people don't really believe it is." Nayara replied. Nayara saw her backpack with her comics lying on the floor and she 'innocently' kicked it under her bed. "Umm, yes. I will like to go." Nayara answered him. Peter smiled at her and nodded before leaving. "Just call next time when you are swinging by, or if you need anything. I will be here to help you." Nayara told him. Peter nodded at her and put his mask on.
"Nayara?" Nayara heard the voice of Emma downstairs.
"Yeah?" Nayara asked from her bedroom.
"Who are you talking to?" Emma asked. The blonde woman was frowning, quietly walking up the stairs as Nayara thought of an answer.
"Where is the movie at?" Nayara asked Peter. "Actually, just text. If she finds you in here then we are in so much trouble." Nayara whispered to him. Peter nodded and walked to the window before leaving. Nayara sighed, looking down at her phone as Emma entered.
"Who was that?" Emma asked her. surprised at seeing the window opened.
"Who?" Nayara asked her, hiding the fact that Peter was the one that was just in her room minutes ago. Emma sighed shaking her head.
"You are lying to me, Nayara. I thought we were going to be honest with each other from now on." Emma told her.
Nayara sighed. "It was Spider-Man. He swung by to say hi to me." Nayara answered, not looking at her in the eye.
"And why will he do that?" Emma asked her, crossing her arms over her chest. She trusted the girl, but she wanted her to stay out of trouble as much as possible; which also included the heroes that ran around Manhattan.
Nayara sighed. "Because he is friends with Peter Parker. He wanted to ask me if I could go over to watch a movie with him and his friends." Nayara told her.
Emma's face relaxed. "And you want to? Is it like a double date or...." Emma started and Nayara shook her head.
"It's not a date. Even if it were, I will have to deny it." Nayara told Emma.
Emma took a seat next to her. "And why would that be?" Emma asked her.
"Because he is destined to be with somebody else, and not me. I don't want to get my heart broken by that, so I'm not going to accept it." Nayara answered, sitting back down on her desk. "Its fate and that's it. I am not going to change who he loves because of what I want." Nayara said, picking up her pencil. Her entire emotions flattering for a few seconds.
Emma stood up from her bed, and hugged the girl. "You always think of other before yourself. So, for once in a while be a little selfish." Emma told Nayara. "And you can go, if you want to. He is a nice kid." Emma added.
"Thank you." Nayara weakly replied.
"I know something that might cheer you up." Emma told her. Nayara hummed a response, urging her to talk. "Steve called, and he says he has a surprise for you at an Air Base outside Manhattan." Emma told her.
Nayara frowned, and turned to face him. "What do you mean a surprise?" Nayara asked her.
"Go and figure it out yourself." Emma told her. Nayara looked at her confused on what she meant. Emma sighed, taking the girl's hand in hers. The girl has become her entire world. She never pictured herself as a guardian, or a mother and even more so after an entire group of students she used to teach perished. She was afraid of loosing her, which was the reason why she remained attentive of the girl. "He is waiting in the living room for you, Steve." Emma told her.
Nayara smiled and picked up her bag quickly before running out of her room. She stopped half way down the hall, before smiling brightly at Emma. "Well, I better run off before you get too annoyed." Nayara joked before running down the stairs. She skipped the last two, causing slight panic within Emma who thought the girl was going to fall down.
She sighed, watching how Nayara gave a look of pure admiration to Steve Rogers. "What's the surprise?" Nayara asked him.
Steve shrugged acting all innocent. "You will be see when you get there." Steve told her. Steve gave a curtious nod to Emma before following the girl outside. Once they were outside he handed her a helmet with the symbol of Captain Marvel on the bag.
"I guess this is mine to keep." Nayara said, smiling at him before pointing at the symbol. Steve chuckled at her. Steve got into the motorcycle and she followed after him.
. . .
Nayara was excited to see the surprise that Steve had for her. She watched curiously watching how they approached a military equipped plane. "Are we going to recreate Top Gun or something?" Nayara asked curiously.
"Actually, we are going to fly it." Carol said, exiting the small garage that was diagonal to them. Nayara looked at Steve before turning her eyes back at Carol.
"What do you mean?" Nayara asked.
Carol shook her head, pointing at the plane. "You and me are going to fly it." Carol told her. Nayara shook her head.
"I don't know how to fly." Nayara replied.
Carol smiled at Steve. "That's why I'm here for." Carol told her before walking towards the aircraft.
Nayara looked at Steve. "This can't be happening. Oh my. I can't believe I'm flying with her! Her!" Nayara said, excited at the news.
Steve chuckled, seeing the childless in Nayara's feature. "Yeah, well you can't tell Emma this. At least not after a few weeks. She will get furious at me." Steve told her.
Nayara shrugged. "Oh, I don't care." Nayara said before following Carol. However as she was about to enter the plane, she stopped when she saw something. A small flash of light on the horizon. Almost as if the light had reflected from a mirror. She thought nothing of it, and instead she entered the plane, following Carol Danvers.
. . .
Nayara arrived to the cinema with a big smile. The flight with Carol still clear on her head. Peter caught sight of her huge smile, and could not help but smile himself. "Why do you have that look on your face?" Peter asked her.
Nayara shook her head, her smile not dying down. "What are you talking about?" Nayara asked him.
"That smile. Why do you have it?" Peter asked her. "And look at your eyes, they are brighter than usual." Peter pointed out. He was happy to see her this excited and happy.
Nayara pulled him away from the people. "Oh, my! I flew a plane with Carol Danvers. It was the best experience ever! I got to talk to her and all. She is so brilliant and talented." Nayara said, her smile widen even more.
Peter chuckled, amused by the girl's face. "What?" Nayara asked confused at his behavior.
"It's nice to see you this happy. That's all. You have a nice smile." Peter confessed her. Nayara will be lying to herself if she said that she did not felt her stomach turn a ruffled sea. Nayara's cheeks turned slightly pick and this not wen unnoticed by Peter who was smiling as well.
"Oh, there you are Peter." Mary Jane Watson said, waving at the two of them. Nayara smiled at the red head. "Hi, you must be Nayara. We met a couple of weeks ago at lunch. Peter never shuts up about you." Mary Jane told her before shaking her hand. "I'm Mary Jane, but my friends call me MJ." She added.
"Which is pretty much how everyone calls her." Peter whispered to Nayara. "And that's Gwen Stacy." Peter told her, nodding towards the blonde who was coming their way.
"Hi, I'm Gwen Stacy. Nice to meet you." She said, shaking Nayara's hand.
Nayara hesitated before answering. "It's great meeting you two." Nayara said, smiling at them. Nayara looked at Gwen, who will eventually die falling off a bell tower but not before giving birth to Peter's twins who later will return all grown up trying to kill their own father. Or at least that was in the comics. She smiled at both of Peter's future lovers. "I will go and get something to eat...and drink." She said before walking away from the group. She sighed to herself, reliving herself from the tense situation.
Peter followed her, and the two other teens let him go knowing how interested he was for Nayara. Peter stood next to Nayara as she looked at the line in front of her. "I tend to keep things to myself most of the time." Nayara said, looking at the line ahead. Peter looked at her, listening to her. "And I need you to have a little patience with me because I am not used to sharing stuff with somebody. Especially since it's this important." Nayara told Peter. Nayara saw the confused look on his face, and she sighed. "I will tell you soon about myself Peter. Since you are so inquisitive about it, I will tell you that I do hate horror films. I love sci-fi and comedy films. I love Star Wars. I love Spider-Man, I think he is pretty good hero." She said it, giving a wink to Peter when she said the last sentence. "And yes my parents disappeared out, suddenly. That's the honest truth. I don't know what happened. All I know is something, but that is for you to figure it out on your own." She said to him, before buying herself some popcorn. Peter stood stuck on his spot trying to figure out the girl's words.
Nayara noticed this and waited for him. "You coming. I can't eat all this popcorn alone, Pete." She said, smiling at him. Peter nodded at her before walking quickly to her. This year she will make herself a promise: tell the truth to the Spidey boy who has done nothing but helped her.
