10 | THE DEAL
NAYARA WAS SICK, thanks to the cold weather and rain she had to deal with the previous two days. This meant that she was stuck in bed with a horrible fever. She had never felt this sick until two years ago when she got a horrible cold in which she slept almost everyday. She was never to take naps, but she still did when her entire body felt like it was about to die of tiredness.
On that moment, she missed her mother. She missed how she will even cuddle with her when she felt sick, but she could not to her right now. Thankfully, Emma arrived quickly and asked her if she was alright and what happened.
To Nayara's surprised, James did not said anything to Emma. She did not know if to worry or be happy about it. She knew Emma knew, and the Professor did as well and when she talked to James she let out thoughts and worries she had to talk to someone before she exploded.
Of course, she left out the part about Steve's conversation when Emma asked her. Emma called the school telling them that the girl was sick. The blonde took a seat next to Nayara, handling her a warm cup of tea while the girl coughed her lugs out.
Emma sat down next to her, as she brushed the hair of the girl's face. She noticed the tears falling out of the girls eyes. Emma stayed quiet watching how Nayara sat up in bed and dried her tears. She acted like it was nothing, and this worried Emma.
"Why are you crying?" Emma asked her. The girl shrugged drinking her tea. "You know you can talk to me." Emma told the girl.
"I don't want to cry, Emma." Nayara whispered to her. "I feel like I don't need to, but I can't help it." Nayara added, her voice crackling. "I miss my mom, Emma. I miss my family." She whispered as she tried to hold the tears.
"Don't hold back the tears. Never do. When you bottle emotions, it hurts and it not good. Talk to me." Emma told her. Nayara let out a sob as she let the tears fall down her face. Emma hesitated before bring the girl into a hug. "It's okay. It's okay." She whispered to her as she hugged the young teen.
"I feel lost Emma. I feel alone. I feel out of place. I don't know what to do." Nayara whispered to her. "I hate all this knowledge, or this emotions. If it weren't for them I wouldn't have gotten myself into this problem." Nayara whispered at Emma.
"You didn't, Nayara." Emma told her. "Now rest." Emma added before fixing the blanket on top of her. "Did you know the man? The one who tried to kill you." Emma asked her.
Nayara shook her head. "He wasn't trying to kill me, Emma. He was trying to kill Steve. Steve Rogers." Nayara said, before coughing.
"What were you doing with Steve Rogers?" Emma asked her.
"He said he was walking me home. I was telling him no when the man arrived." Nayara lied before closing her eyes. Emma nodded before leaving the girl and closing the door behind her.
"How is she doing?" A voice said behind her. Emma turned around, looking James Howlett.
"She is doing bad. She is got fever and everything. I bought her some tea. I am going to go and see if they have medicine for the cough. It was the damn rain and the cold." Emma told him. Emma sighed. "If you excuse me." She said before walking away.
. . .
Nayara got better after a few days in bed. Or at least better enough to go to school. She opened her locker, sighing as the piercing headache intensified. "Nayara? You are back?" A voice said behind her. Nayara looked at Peter from over her shoulder.
"Yeah." She said in a low voice.
Peter reminded silent, seeing the slight pale face of Nayara. "What happened?" Peter asked her.
"I got a bad cold." Nayara answered him, before turning away to put her books in her backpack. "Emma was thankful to stay at home with me and help me." Nayara told her.
"Emma?" Peter asked her.
Nayara nodded. "She is my guardian." Nayara added.
Peter sighed, thinking of way in which he could start a conversation she was dying to ask her. Are you okay? What were you Steve talking about? Why the hell did HYDRA pop out of nowhere?, where some of the questions Peter was asking himself. He took a deep breath, holding his backpack's strap tighter on his hand. "How are you feeling?" Peter asked her.
"Sick." Nayara said as her voice broke slightly.
Peter sighed. "I mean when you got shot. Carter was going insane, and she came to ask me but I didn't know. I was worried." Peter told her. He looked down at the floor and back at her.
Nayara closed her locker roughly. "I didn't got shot. The shot was going to hit Steve. I pushed him away." Nayara told Peter. "I didn't come because I got a really bad cold due to the rain." Nayara added.
"What were you and Steve talking about?" Peter asked her.
"He asked me something about the internship." Nayara lied not looking at him. She knew Steve might not be found of her telling other - or even himself - about his disappeared best friend that has been used as a weapon by HYDRA.
Peter saw the slight change in her voice. Now that he was with her, he could see through the lies that the girl had started to form. The reason? The way her eyes unfocused slightly and how frown or even parted her mouth slightly almost about to speak some truth. Peter didn't questioned it further, he didn't want to invade her privacy.
Instead, he thought about changing the topic. "You were on the news. They say you were a hero." Peter told her. Nayara looked at him. "The man mentioned you, the one you saved."
"Rogers didn't say anything?" Nayara asked Peter.
"Other than you hitting the bad man in the head, no. Why?" Peter asked her.
"I wanted to stay out of the radar."
"Why?" Peter asked her.
"That's for me to keep." Nayara told him.
Peter nodded, respecting her decision. "Alright. Umm...I have the notes that you missed. Carter gave me some. She said that if I ever saw you, to give them to you. She was worried." Peter told Nayara. Nayara nodded. "Did you know who attacked Steve? The police said that-" Peter asked her but stopped when he saw somebody walk down the halls. "Tony?" He whispered to himself. Nayara looked up ahead and saw Tony Stark walk down the halls of Midtown High School. Tony nodded at Peter and Nayara as he walked away.
"What is he doing here?" Nayara asked Peter holding her book closer to her chest.
Peter shrugged. "I don't know." Peter answered her. The two quietly shared a look before going to their next class together.
. . .
Nayara arrived at her apartment. She stopped when she saw a letter laying in the front porch. Nayara looked down at it, seeing her name written in cursive. The brunette opened the door, and closed it with her foot as she opened the envelope.
Her eyes scanned the letter with caution. There was nothing written on it. She looked through the envelope seeing a match. She walked to the kitchen, dropping the match and looking at the letter.
She sighed, lighting up the match and putting it at a distance behind the blank paper. In a matter of seconds letters started to dance within the letter. She went to the bottom, seening the sender.
Steve Rogers.
Nayara chuckled, rolling her eyes. As she read the letter. "I'm sorry about the other day in the street. I apologize for any other trouble you have had. Steve." Nayara said, rolling her eyes as she put it down. She turned off the match, and threw it on the trash.
Nayara was about to open her fridge, when she heard something move around in the main room. She walked to the living room, seeing nothing and the door that she had open was locked just like she had left it when she came in.
She hoped it was just her mind playing tricks, but she was wrong.
"You life here by yourself." A voice said behind her making her jump. He heart was in her mouth and she held breath. Nayara relaxed when she saw it was Steve Rogers. She held her chest as tried to dried her tears. "I'm sorry. I didn't meant to scare you." Steve Rogers said to her.
"What the hell are you doing here? You come to my home after almost getting shot? Do you want me to get hurt by HYDRA or something?" Nayara asked Steve. The girl sat down, holding her face on her hands as she took deep breath.
"I needed answers, and I wanted to make sure you were okay. Tony mentioned you didn't came to the internship." Steve told Nayara.
"You just wanted the answers. Don't need to lie about it." Nayara told him, turning around to face him. "How did you ever get inside here?" Nayara asked the man.
"The emergency stairs' doors was opened." Steve told her.
"I need to get better security, because if you could get in who knows who else. As far as I know you aren't the sneakiest guy." Nayara said. She sighed, thinking of ways to correct her words. "And when I say you aren't, I mean it because you don't seem like one." Nayara added. "I didn't went to the internship because I was sick. I still am...and I don't know where the hell is your Bucky." Nayara said, standing up.
"You said you knew him." Steve told her.
"I don't know him. I just told you the rumors that I have heard." Nayara replied.
Steve put his hands in his pockets. "You gave me more than any other person could. You had more information that Natasha could give me through her contacts." Steve told her.
"Well that is because she has been screwing him." Nayara replied quickly. She covered her mouth when she said it. Steve's eyes widen at the news, frowning at the girl. Nayara groaned in annoyance, resting her head on the table.
The blonde hero could not form any words about it. "What?" Was all he was able to whisper, both confused and shocked at what the girl had said.
Nayara took deep breath. "Me and my big mouth." She whispered to herself. Steve heard it though.
"How do you know that?" Steve asked her.
Nayara shrugged. "Forget what I said, okay." Nayara told Steve.
"Forget about it? You just told me my best friend was alive. How was I supposed to take it?" Steve asked her.
Nazara was starting to get tired of this conversation since she didn't know what to say to the man. "You weren't supposed to know it yet." Nayara said to him. "And I will ask you to live this apartament. You might be Captain America, and I highly respect you and admire you but that doesn't give you the right to show up at out nowhere in my house like freaking Batman!" Nayara exclaimed to him.
"Who is Batman?" Steve asked her confused.
"Someone." She said, taking deep breath. "I told you that because I felt bad for you. I felt bad you were all sad about it. You weren't supposed to know yet. I don't even know exactly when, but you eventually do...and when Bucky is then on his right mind he would not want to be found." Nayara told Steve.
The blonde sighed exasperated with the girl. "What do you mean yet?" Steve asked her. "How do you know when and if I will meet him?" Steve asked her. Nayara sighed, looking down at the floor. "How did you know all about this information? Are you HYDRA?" Steve asked her.
Nayara looked up to him furious. Her eyes light slightly, glaring at him. "How do you there call me that! What a disgusting insult! I am no HYDRA, just because I know information doesn't mean that I know everything. It is impossible to know everything, Steve. I told you because I-" Nayara stopped herself. She clenched her jaw. "I told you because I heard rumors. I didn't need to tell you that, but I still did." Nayara said to him. She looked at the blonde dead in the eyes. "I don't know where he is. I have no idea what so ever. I just know he exists!
"Where did you heard those rumors?" Steve asked her.
"In my planet. In my own universe. Do you know that I am not from here? Did you forgot about that little detail, huh? I heard tales. Tales. I don't even know where he is, if I would I would have told you." Nayara told Steve, pointing at him with her index finger.
"Why?" Steve asked her.
"Because you deserve to know where your best friend is. You deserve to be happy." Nayara said, and just as she finished the sink broke. Nayara jumped, seeing it. She sighed, kneeling down trying to fix it. "HYDRA is an evil organizations which have caused arms to many. I will never joined it. That was a low blow, you know?" Nayara told Steve, trying to hold on the massive amount of water that was coming off the sink.
Steve sighed, walking towards the sink. He closed the it slightly, slowing enough time for Nayara to hold some paper towers and a bucket, to let the water fall there. Nayara stood up from the floor,
Steve sighed, not looking at the girl. "I'm sorry. I just want to find him." Steve told Nayara. Nayara nodded in undertanment, seeing the tired eyes of Steve. "I have thought about it, you know. When you informed me he was alive started to look about the Winter Soldier. You were right, he was a ghost." Steve said. "You saved my life the other day. I never got to thank you personally." Steve informed her.
"It's okay. We wouldn't want America's favorite hero to die, right? I mean, you do inspire the people, everywhere, not just in the US. You know I heard stories about you where I am from. My father and I used to chat about what you did. They are gone now." Nayara told Steve. "You aren't the only one who have lost somebody. At least you have a chance to get him bag." Nayara told Steve.
Steve looked up to her. "How do you know? How do you know what is going to happen?" Steve asked her.
Nayara shrugged. "It complicated, but I know it is certain that you two will cross pass again." Nayara answered. "You can let go of it, I have to call the plumber. You should go." Nayara told Steve. Steve nodded, standing up from his place watching the water flow out. Nayara thought about her next actions carefully. She knew that Steve wanted to find Bucky. She also knew that he would not stop asking her about him, so she decided a smart decision that could create a lot of problems for her in the future; and possibly even put her in the Avenger's spotlight.
"Steve?" Nayara called out for him. The blonde turned to look at her. "I might not know where he is...but I can help you find him. He seems very important to you, so I guess I could help. I just ask for one thing." Nayara told the man.
Steve nodded at her. "Anything." Steve told her.
"I don't want you to tell anybody about what you and me are doing. You know, finding Barnes. Being in the Avenger's radar puts a target one me and I don't want anybody I care about get hurt, like my guardian. That's all I ask." Nayara told Steve.
Steve nodded, understanding her decision. "You are willing to help?" Steve asked her.
"I just gave you a deal, didn't I? Plus, I would hate not helping my favorite hero." Nayara told Steve. "I know you are a good man, Steve. It must feel weird feel kind of out of time, and having Barnes will make you feel like home again I guess. You know, having someone from the same time period and all." Nayara informed him, sending him a brief smile. "Just, please knock the door first and don't come inside ever again without asking. It freaks me out a little. Please." Nayara added.
Steve nodded, taking out his hand for her to shake. Nayara smiled back at the hero and hesitantly shook his hand. "Understood." Steve told her.
"Take care, Steve." Nayara said, watching him walk out of the kitchen. "Now, how the hell I am going to explain this mess to Emma." The brunette asked to herself.
