24// Queen

The colors fade, and you're feeling dizzy, but you immediately wrench your arm from Will's grasp and whirl on him. "What are you doing?" you yell. "Will, this isn't like you!"

"How do you know what I'm like?" Will asks calmly.

"Because I know you! I've spent all summer getting to know you!"

"Getting to know a part of me," Will corrects. "The part that dominated when I was captive. But now I'm not captive. Now my true self is emerging."

"No!" You have to scream the word, because if you don't, his words might be true, he might actually be like this, the Will you know might actually be a façade. And you refuse to accept that. "N-no, you're just not th-thinking straight—"

"Yasmin?"

You turn. Pacifica Southeast stands in the kitchen doorway, with Gideon Pines peeking out behind her. "Yasmin, is everything okay?"

"No," you say. "No, get away, it's not safe—"

"I'm not safe?" Will asks.

"No you're not!" you explode, rounding on him once more. "You kidnapped a baby, you kidnapped me, and you want to hurt people! That's not safe at all, Cipher!"

"I want to hurt people who fully deserve it," Will corrects you.

"Wait," Gideon says, "he kidnapped you?"

"Yeah, but that doesn't matter right now," you say. "He wants to go after the Gleeful twins — we gotta do something."

"I'm right here." Will sounds annoyed. "And there's nothing you can do. Plus, I doubt these two will want to protect the Gleefuls, anyway. You haven't been hurt by them, Yasmin, but we have."

"I-I don't really want to hurt anyone, though," Gideon says, his voice small.

"Well, you don't have to," Will replies. "I'm the demon here; I'll do the dirty work. C'mon, Yasmin."

What, he wants you to watch him hurt people? "N-no," you say. "I'm staying right here."

"What?" Will asks. He didn't mishear you, but he probably wants you to reconsider your defiance.

Pacifica takes your hand in hers, lending you emotional strength. "I'm staying," you repeat. "You're right. There's nothing I can do to stop you. So I'm not going to watch you."

"Yasmin." He actually looks. . . hurt? He tries to take your hand, but you pull it away. "You made this possible," he says. "You empowered me. Don't you want to see me make things right?"

Guilt slams you as he speaks. You did make this possible. It's your fault that Will became so awful. Your fault that he wants to hurt people. You force down the guilt and say, "Make things right? You're not making things right, you're — you're getting petty revenge."

"Oh," Will says. "So my pain is petty, now?"

It's useless. He's just going to keep twisting your words. But you keep trying. "Revenge isn't going to do anything, Will. It won't change that your pain happened. Hurting someone else will just cause more pain — it won't fix yours."

Will almost looks to be considering this. But then he shakes his head. "Fine," he says. "Stay here. I thought I could share this victory with you, but I guess even my charity is seen as a threat."

With that, he pushes his way out of the room and leaves the house. He takes the dimension hopper with him — for now, you're stranded here.

"Yasmin." Pacifica guides you from the kitchen, to the couch. You didn't realize how much you're shaking until now. With Pacifica's help, you end up seated on the couch. You feel numb.

"What now?" Gideon asks.

Pacifica shushes him. She sits next to you and puts her arm around you. "What's going on, Yasmin?" she asks gently.

"Will went demonic," you force out. That's all you can handle before the events of the day weigh down on you. Hearing the words out loud is the last straw: You break down crying.

You cry for a long, long time. You don't know how long. Pacifica holds you close; Gideon brings over a box of tissues. As you cry, you imagine all the terrible things Will might be doing right now. But you can't do anything about it — you can't even speak.

Everything is wrong. How did everything so wrong? What happened to the Will last night, the one who was so enamored by the world? What happened to the Will that hugged you so desperately? The change was so quick — so drastic — that you're struggling to catch up. That sweet, caring Will — he can't be gone forever, can he?

But. . . he's so different now.

You want to go after him, go try to stop him, but you know it'll be futile. You've never felt this helpless. Will can do whatever he wants, and you're powerless to stop him. Might as well stay out of the danger as long as you can.

Though. . . you will need to get that dimension hopper eventually. You can't stay stuck in this dimension forever.

Pacifica and Gideon stay quiet while you cry, but now Pacifica speaks up. "He seemed really different."

You just nod, relieved that it's not just you who notices the difference. "It. . . it was gradual. . . but fast. Now he's on a rampage against everyone who hurt him."

"The Gleefuls," Pacifica says. "If he's focused on them, we don't have anything to worry about, right?"

A knife of guilt slashes through you. You should be out there — you should be protecting the Gleefuls from Will. Right? You know you probably can't do anything, but shouldn't you try?

"Yasmin?"

You shake your head. "He's focused on the Gleefuls now, but it won't stop there. He — he got mad at practically everyone he met in my dimension. He. . . he told me people were insignificant to him."

Pacifica and Gideon break their horrified expressions long enough to wince at that.

"So. . . what'll he do after he gets the Gleefuls?" Gideon asks.

"Probably start another Weirdmageddon," you say quietly. You didn't want to say it aloud, but it's too much of a possibility for you to ignore it.

"Another what?"

"Weirdmageddon," you say, and it sounds just as ugly the second time you say it. "In. . . in my dimension, before I was born, there was another demon. Bill Cipher, Will's brother. He. . . he started an apocalypse and hurt a lot of people. My Dipper and Mabel stopped him, but. . . my mom was our age when it happened, and she still has nightmares about it sometimes." You put your head in your hands. "I'm sorry," you whisper. "This is my fault."

Your companions are too shocked to reassure you. "The apocalypse?" says Pacifica, with a tinge of hysteria.

Gideon follows this up immediately with, "How do we stop it?"

"I-I don't know," you say. You can feel yourself starting to lose it, but you cling to sanity. "He's regained some powers — he can multiply himself endlessly, he has super senses, he can do some levitation. . . ." You don't dare tell them about the weirdness bubbles; maybe Will won't be able to create more, based on how much it tired him out the last time.

Despair rushes into the room. The situation seems more hopeless by the minute. Your only allies are two kids, just like you; the most competent people you know couldn't fight against Will; you're trapped in this dimension. You want to curl up in a ball on this couch and never get up again.

"What are we going to do?" Gideon whispers.

His voice pulls you back. No — you can't give up now. "We're going to prepare," you say. "We're going to tell people about the danger and get them out of town while we still can."

"They'd never believe us," Pacifica says. "No one around here believes in the supernatural."

"Then—"

Pacifica screams.

The scream makes you jump. "What is it?!"

A hand grabs your arm.

Your head whips around to look behind you only for you to see Will again. How long has he been gone? He must have just appeared, which explains Pacifica's scream. Your heart races in fear as you force out, "Wh-what do you want?"

"A queen," Will says simply. "I'm not strong enough to start Weirdmageddon — yes, I heard you — but that doesn't mean I can't rule over this pathetic town. And since you're stuck in this dimension, you may as well rule with me." A challenge glints in his eyes. "Who knows, maybe you'll be able to steal back the dimension hopper."

Your mind races. What? Why is he doing this? Does he want you to escape?

Another question rushes past the others. "Wh-wh-what did you do to the Gleefuls?" you ask, your voice shaky.

Will grins, but it's dark and gruesome. "They're my slaves. Come back with me to the Tent of Telepathy and you can see them."

You shiver. "Do I have a choice?"

Will frowns in thought. "No," he decides. Two more copies of him appear nearby, startling everyone in the room. "Come along."

"Let g-go of her," Gideon stutters. He reaches for your arm, but a copy of Will shoves him away and looms menacingly over him.

"Leave them alone," you say. You stand up, unsure if you're obeying Will or defying him. You're not sure if it will change anything.

"Sure," Will says. "For now. I don't need them." He pulls you after him. You instinctively resist at first, but he's stronger than you are. It quickly becomes obvious that walking instead of being dragged is the more comfortable form of transportation.

"Yasmin!" Pacifica calls after you.

"Don't come after me," you call back. "I'll get the dimension hopper, and I'll go get help. I'll stop this."

Will just laughs.

You can't do anything but try to keep up as he drags you out of the Mystery Shack.
