15// Mabel Gleeful

You and Will stay in the hug for a while, neither of you wanting to be the first to pull away. But then the door swings into the wall with a slam and the two of you jump apart, looking wildly toward the doorway.

In it stands Mabel Gleeful.

Her chest rises and falls dramatically, a crazy look in her eye. "Get out!" she screams. You suddenly find yourself unable to move, a blue glow appearing on your skin, identical to the one surrounding Mabel's headband. Mabel slices her hand through the air, and you're suddenly flying across the room. You fly through the bars that Will moved and hit the back wall with a painful impact. The air in your lungs flees out of your body like an escaped prisoner.

You lay there, wheezing. How are you supposed to fight someone who can throw you around like that?

"Mabel, stop."

As you pull yourself to a sitting position, you see Mabel round on Will. "And what are you doing out?" she demands. Her amulet glows again, but nothing happens. She tries again, but Will just stands there, unaffected. After a few attempts and frustrated growls, realization suddenly seems to hit her. She backs away, the color draining from her face.

Will takes a slow, measured step towards her. "Notice," he says conversationally, "how you didn't have to touch the bars of the cell to see me?"

Mabel backs into the wall and stares at Will, trembling. "H-how did you. . . ?"

"I have a physical form now, Mabel," he says, standing over her. "Do you know what that means?"

Mabel doesn't answer, but from the fear on her face you can see that she does.

"It means I can get payback."

He puts one hand out, and suddenly Mabel starts screaming. She falls to the ground and curls up in a ball, writhing under the invisible torture.

You get shakily to your feet and make your way over to Will, putting your hand on his shoulder. "Will," you say.

He doesn't react to your touch.

"Will," you say more firmly. "She's not worth it."

Now Will notices you. He turns toward you, and Mabel stops convulsing. She lays there on the ground, whimpering. "She has caused me so much pain," he says. "It's only fair that I repay the favor."

"I. . ." It makes sense. But you don't want to see anyone getting hurt, not even this evil girl. "I know. But you can be stronger than that. You don't have to give in to the temptation."

Will lets out a hollow laugh. "Yasmin, I'm a demon. I'm basically the definition of temptation."

But he doesn't hurt Mabel again.

Instead, he stands over her. "I am leaving now," he says, his voice hard. "You will never use me for your plans again."

He turns to you. "Let's go."

"Wait," you say. "I came down here with Pacifica Southeast." You nudge Mabel with your foot. "What did you do to her?"

"I. . . stuck her in Gideon's cell," Mabel says, her breathing labored.

"Can you free them both?" you ask Will.

He nods, and the two of you leave Will's prison behind.

He stops just beyond the door and takes a deep breath. "I'm out," he says. He looks at you and smiles widely. "You did it, Yasmin."

You grin back, a little embarrassed at the praise. "It. . . it was nothing."

Will playfully nudges your shoulder. "Then how come nobody else has done it? You are amazing." He gives you a more serious smile. "Thank you."

"N-no problem."

You lead Will back to the room where Gideon was imprisoned. Pacifica, now on the other side of the bars, looks up at you sheepishly. "I got caught."

Then she catches sight of Will, and her eyes widen. "Is this. . . is this Will?"

You realize she's probably only ever seen him in his triangle form. "Yes."

Pacifica stares at him, then shoots you a sly grin. "I can see why you were so adamant about saving him."

You flush.

Will puts his hand out, and both Pacifica and Gideon flinch. He's not trying to hurt them, though: the bars on their cell peel apart much like his did.

"Come on," he says. "We'll see you back home to the Mystery Shack."

Pacifica leaps to her feet. "Thanks, Will!" Gideon looks suspicious of Will, but follows the two of you out anyway.

The walk back to the Shack is fairly quiet. You almost start a conversation a few times, but then decide that this contented silence is nice. About halfway there, Will reaches out and grabs your hand.

You look up at him in surprise. He blushes a bit and looks away. "I just. . . I haven't been able to walk like this — h-holding someone's hand — until now."

You smile. "I don't mind."

Once you reach the Shack, you guide Will to the spot where you first arrived in this dimension. "Well, we'd better be going, then."

Pacifica gives you a big hug. "Thank you, Yasmin." She pulls back and smiles at you. "Feel free to come back anytime!"

You smile back. "Sounds fun."

Gideon fiddles with his vest. "Um, thanks for saving me," he says. "And. . ." He looks shyly up at Will. "Does this mean we don't have to deal with you in our dreams anymore?"

Will rolls his eyes, but smiles while he does it. He reaches out and tousles Gideon's hair. "That it does."

After saying your goodbyes and getting two or three more hugs from Pacifica, you and Will stand in the center of the room, ready to travel back to your dimension. You pull out the dimension hopper. . .

And then look up at Will in embarrassment. "What's the name of my dimension, again?"

Will grins and takes the dimension hopper from your hands, punching in the target dimension. Once it's typed in, he grabs your hand so that you'll travel with him. Then he hits Enter.

The last thing you see is Pacifica and Gideon waving goodbye — Gideon shyly, and Pacifica enthusiastically.
