Levi had found that he had never liked loud sounds.

He never knew why but even as a baby, his mother would say that he'd be frighten over any sudden loud noises. As if he had somehow survived a life of war and struggling to live in the newly won and brought peace.

Levi had always assumed his mother was reacting over the top when she had told such stories. But as he grew older, Levi wondered if he had somehow survived a war in a past life. He was too shaken up by sudden and loud sounds for someone who holds no trauma from loud sounds.

Sometimes Levi had found himself staring at his reflection after being so easily spooked by a sudden sound from somewhere outside his home. A stranger always seemed to stare back, a stranger with his face but shelled shocked and not trusting the peace he's lived his whole life with.

Levi never liked his reflection after he's been spooked, scared over the stranger with his face who had lived a life he no longer remembered.

Mikasa was understanding, she somehow knew before they even truly met. Her eyes understanding, the same as his own and she'd hold him close whenever they hear an random noise.

Her eyes growing to be a complete strangers as her body tensed for an unknow but expected fight. A fight that never came for her even if she tries to wait for one to find her in her peaceful life.

Neither had wanted to try going on a first date, too scared over the broken strangers living inside of them. But they had somehow ended up on an outing together that would have been a very nice date if it was one. They talked, some conversations a lot deeper and ones that only they could understand.

It left them actual wanting to go on a first date together and they've been happily together ever since.

Happy, not just content.

They had gained happiness for themselves in this life.

Something that had seemed to let the strangers in their reflections eyes seem less harden. To have their reflections seeming more free before they glance away from them.

The only problem they both faced was fireworks.

They could expect fireworks at new years but they could never truly expect the extract second they'd go off and for how long.

It left them both closing their curtains, leaving the lights off near mirrors and allowing certain sparkly surfaces to grow a layer of dust to hide any reflections. Levi would give everything a good clean in the new year, he could live with a tiny bit of dust for a couple of days if it stops a past he held no attachment to from showing up.

They'd play music on the tv, low and quiet to fill in as background sound without the risk of headaches. A hot chocolate and herbal tea left on the coffee table in reach for them to grab, to use the heat and taste to ground them to THIS life.

No one but their own reflections could steal the peace they've gained in this life, the happiness they've found together.

And Levi would keep his breathing calm by breathing in whenever he felt hot breath against his ear as his wife breathed out. That Levi would be kept warm by his wife heating him up with her own body as she holds him close, tucked tight and safe against her front and limbs wrapped around him like strains that would never allow him to stolen from her without a decent fight.

Mikasa would pass the time as she watches him knit, breathing with each click and clank of his knitting needles. Watching as he knit her a new black scarf, a present for her birthday the next year that she was meant to forget about. Watching as he uses his hands to create instead of to break and destroy.

Both growing lost in their own created comfort and safety that the fireworks outside their home grows to fade away as distant background sound. Fireworks forgotten about as neither notice the new year has arrived as they only pay attention to what they've got into their lives, what they get to keep.

Neither would notice as their reflections wouldn't hold strangers from a time before anymore. That the strangers with their faces had finally found peace as they watch their future selves finally stop remembering the war, the lost, the suffering, the hurt and the end.

Instead, their reflections with grow to show the people they had grown to be, the happiness they kept in their lives without anyone ever being able to steal it from them again.

With the last firework, the strangers were finally moving on.
