Chapter 22: New Guardian
Faria smiled as she sat up on her own. Just two more weeks until she could get out of the stupid bed. She was tired of being on bed rest, and had been for the past two months. She wanted to get up and move around. Not much had happened but everyone trusted Smokescreen a bit more after he retrieved the first of what they called the Omega Keys. They learned about them from a sword called the Star Saber which was now shattered into a million pieces by Megatron's own Dark Star Saber. However, that was the least of Faria's concerns. What Faria was worried about was what she had been sworn to secrecy about the Omega Keys...
She was not allowed to tell the other humans that their guardians might be able to restore their home world and leave them. She hated not being able to tell them. She also hated the fact that the Autobot she had fallen in love with might leave her. She wasn't ready for that.
Faria watched as Bulkhead moved around with ease. He was completely healed, and had been for a couple weeks. She wished she could heal as fast as him. Or any of the bots for that matter. They got shot in the arm, and Ratchet could heal it up easily with bits of metal. Unlike humans, who if shot in the arm, it could take them weeks, even months to recover. And Faria was trying to heal an abdomen wound so that would take a longer time.
"How are you doing today?" June asked Faria. Faria sighed.
"I'm able to sit up on my own now, as you just saw. My stomach still hurts a little when I shift in a certain way, but other than that, it doesn't hurt at all."
June smiled. "That's good. That means it's almost done healing. May I see it?"
Faria pulled up her shirt enough to see the wound, and June smiled at the sight of it. It was nearly completely closed up and June knew Faria would be able to get up and walking within the next couple days, instead of the two weeks Faria thought she had left.
"Well, you should be able to get up and walking within the couple days, but I want to get you in for a scan to check and make sure everything is healed up inside", June says. Faria hesitated for second before sighing.
"Ratchet can do that", she murmured. "He does have the special instruments, you know."
June smiled. "I just figured you'd like to get away from here for a bit."
Faria smiled. "I'll have plenty of time to do that later. I just want to get scanned now and then you can diagnose when I'll be able to start walking again."
June nodded, and opened the curtain, looking for Ratchet. He was at his computer, staring at it blankly. Faria smiled softly, but quickly hid it when he started to look over here.
"Ratchet, can you scan Faria for me? I want to make sure her insides are healing just as well as her outsides."
Ratchet hesitated, looking at Faria, remembering the time she had told him not to scan her without permission. Faria gave him a small nod, and he scanned her. Faria shivered at the feeling of his scanning beam go through her. It was red where the wound was, but Ratchet looked at his arm to look at her vitals.
"She's healing wonderfully", Ratchet murmured. "Physically, at least."
Faria felt a stab of pain at his comment about her not being emotionally well. She thought she caught a glimpse of shock go through his eyes as if he couldn't believe his own words. She reached for the remote that closed the curtain, but Ratchet tried to talk to her.
"Faria, wait!" he cried out, catching the attention of everyone in the base. Faria ignored him, and closed the curtain. Tears dripped from her eyes and she laid down carefully, pressing a pillow into her face to try and block out her sobs. However, they still made it through the pillow, and everyone in base could hear them. Especially Ratchet, who stared at the curtain separating her from the rest of them, guilt appearing on his face, and staying there until he noticed everyone staring at him in sympathy. Instantly the guilt was buried, and he snapped at them.
"What are you looking at?!" Everyone went back to what they were originally doing, except for Optimus, who walked over to Ratchet and rested a servo on Ratchet's shoulder.
"Are you alright, old friend?" Optimus asked quietly. Ratchet didn't say anything for a few moments, and Optimus was worried Ratchet hadn't heard him. However, Ratchet responded before Optimus could say anything else.
"No, I fear I am not, old friend", Ratchet murmurs, staring at the curtain again. It was silent for a few moments before Optimus spoke again.
"Go talk to her", Optimus told him. Ratchet shook his helm.
"I can't", he muttered. Optimus opened his mouth to tell Ratchet that it was possible, but Ratchet spoke again. "I know what you're going to say, Optimus, and I am telling you now, that it won't work. Whenever I talk to her, I always seem to make things worse! It would probably be best to have Smokescreen be her guardian!" Ratchet was shouting but he lowered his voice down to a whisper that only Optimus could hear. "At least he'd be able to protect her better than me."
Ratchet felt his spark pang at those words, but he knew it was true.
"Ratchet", Smokescreen murmured in shock. "You're the best guardian for her."
Ratchet shook his head. "I'm not!" he snapped. "I'm a rusty old medic who can't even protect himself! How am I supposed to protect a human being-!" He was about to add 'that I'm in love with' at the end but stopped himself at the last minute. His spark panged painfully, and he moved away from the computers, casting his eyes to the ground.
"Make Smokescreen be her guardian, and not me. I'll only hurt her more", Ratchet murmured. He glanced at the curtain, and noticed a small face peeking around it. He recognized it as Faria's and realized that she was... out of bed. He opened his mouth to tell her to get back in bed, but stopped himself, and looked away before transforming and going for a drive to clear his head.
Faria watched in shock. She had heard the entire thing, and couldn't believe that Ratchet had... given up his guardianship of her. She looked at the rest of the room, and they all seemed shocked too, especially Smokescreen. She gave him a small smile, though tears were still dripping from her eyes.
"Looks like you're my guardian now, Smokes. Don't worry. I'm pretty easy to watch over, seeing as I'm stuck here doing homework and keeping caught up on school."
"Nuh uh uh", Dahlia said. "In two weeks, if you're strong enough, you'll be going back to school."
Faria blinked in surprise before a grin made it's way onto her face. "Really?!" she exclaimed. Dahlia nodded, and Faria walked slowly over to her to hug her. Dahlia hugged her gently, before making her get back in bed.
"Get some rest, Faria. We'll start getting you your strength back tomorrow", Dahlia murmured. Miko nodded ecstatically.
"I helped Bulkhead gain his strength back!" she exclaimed. "I can help you get yours back!"
Faria smiled softly. "I'd appreciate that, Miko." She walked back to her bed, and climbed in. For the first time, she managed to fall asleep without feeling numb or crying herself to sleep. She was actually ready for the next day.
