2: Jack's Race

Ignoring the whispers from her peers, Faria continued to limp to her next class. When she first began going to school here, the whispers bothered her but not anymore. She had heard much worse on the racer's track than here at school. She used to be bullied as well by a kid named Vince but after he recognized her as the Viper at a race one time, he tended to leave her alone, much to the surprise of many kids at school. They thought that Faria was easy pickings, due to her limp. However, she had learned to work around it, and so therefore anyone who tried to pick on her tended to be more injured than her. After a few times of this happening, they learned that she was not one to be messed with.

The chatter grew louder around Faria as she stepped into a classroom. She took her seat off to the side of the classroom, ignoring everyone around her, just as they ignore her. Soon, the bell rang, and class began. Faria, however, did not pay attention, no doubt annoying the teacher to no end, especially when he called on her.

"Miss Weaver", the teacher, Mr. Lords, called. "Please tell me what the third branch of the government is."

"Judicial", Faria said, not even bothering to look away from the window, watching as leaves moved in their trees as well as studying three interesting looking vehicles.

"And what does the Judicial branch do?" Mr. Lords continued to question.

Faria sighed in annoyance, but still does not look away from the window. "It's the courts and stuff, such as the Supreme Court. The Judicial branch is the branch that interprets the laws."

Mr. Lords sighed. "Correct. Though I would appreciate it if you would pay attention in the my class."

Faria only remained silent, and continued to study the three vehicles that had caught her attention. One was a blue and pink motorcycle. The second was an olive green jeep. And then Faria's personal favorite, a yellow and black Chevrolet Camaro.

'I suppose I am a little biased, though', Faria mused to herself, slightly amused at her thoughts. Finally the bell rang and she was finally able to get out of this class. She was so glad that this was her last hour. Unfortunately, she wasn't going to escape so easily.

"Miss Weaver, could you please stay after class?" Mr. Lords asked. Faria nodded, nervousness filling her body, and she waits as the students leave. After every student was gone, Mr. Lords walked over to Faria's desk, leaning on the one next to it. She couldn't help but shift nervously. "Faria, I would really appreciate it if you would pay attention in my class."

Faria sweetly smiled, though she was extremely nervous and scared. "Sorry, Mr. Lords. I know I was in the wrong for not paying attention and I can only hope it won't happen again."

"May I ask why you weren't paying attention today?"

Faria looked sheepishly down at the ground. "I'd prefer not to release any specifics, so let's just say that I had a late night and then did not get much sleep due to nightmares."

Mr. Lords nodded, before gesturing that Faria could go. Faria grabbed her backpack, and quickly exited the classroom, moving outside to where she saw Vince leaning up against his car, and a kid- Jack- on the motorcycle riding away. Faria walked up to Vince, and leaned against his car.

"So... hear about any races recently?" Faria asked, keeping her voice quiet.

"None so far", he answered. "But I'm planning on asking that kid on the bike to race."

A grin spread across Faria's face. "I'll be there. Now... you wanna give me a ride home?"

Vince nods, and Faria hops into the passenger seat. They pull up to Jack, as well as a couple of girls. Vince moved the sun roof, and stood up. Faria followed his lead.

"Hey, small world", he said, chuckling lightly.

"Um, I'm having a conversation", Jack said, awkwardness filling his voice. Faria rolled her eyes, not wanting to deal with this at the moment.

"Vince, I'm gonna get out here and walk. Text me the details later", she said, stepping out of the car. Vince only nodded slightly, and Faria began the long limp home. After several minutes of limping, as well as a few breaks to catch her breath, Faria finally arrived home, where she discovered no one there. Dahlia was most likely at work, so Faria had the run of the place.

A few minutes later, she received a text from Vince. 'Dirt road outside Trucker's Ranch in a half hour.' Faria grinned, running to her room to change into her racing clothes. Slipping off her sweats and hoodie, she then pulled on her black skinny jeans, as well as a vibrant blue tank top, and a black leather jacket that was zipped up halfway. To top it all of, the black mask that hid her identity from the other racers and black knee high boots. Stepping out of her room, she limped towards her car. It was times like these that she was glad it was her left leg that she couldn't use as much, though she wished she never had the limp. Climbing into her car, she opened the garage door, and quickly moved to the road that the race would take place. She figured she would be early to surprise Jack.

When Faria arrived there was still about twenty minutes until the others would arrive. So, she just played a game on her phone until they arrived. When they did, she smirked at Jack's shocked expression, though she was slightly surprised when the two girls from before got out of Vince's car. Faria figured they were here to watch the race.

"You know, Vinny, I don't think he expected me here", Faria said in a teasing voice. Vince rolled his eyes.

"Don't call me Vinny, Viper", he said defensively.

"Eh, whatever. Besides, you know that in a real circuit race you have no chance against me", Faria teased again. Vince rolled his eyes.

"That's because you're undefeated in this region. Most people have learned who you are, and can recognize you by your car alone", Vince said. Faria grinned.

"Why do you think I don't go driving it anywhere except at races?" she asked, leaning against the driver's side of her door, though slightly favoring her left side.

Vince rolled his eyes, before turning to Jack. "You ready to race against me and Viper over here?

"Viper?" Jack asked incredulously. Faria smirked under her mask.

"Ah, so you've never heard of me, huh?" she asked, cocking her hip and placing her hand on it. "That's too bad. Means you've never raced before." Straightening out, she started to tie her brown hair up into a messy high ponytail so it wouldn't get everywhere. "I'm known as the Viper. Longest standing champion in the region in street racing."

Jack's eyes widen. "I've heard about you on the news!"

Faria paused, looking at him. "News?"

"U-uh, yeah... Every now and then, there'll be a news report about the illegal street races, and how if there's a street race, Viper's bound to know about it."

Faria laughed darkly. "How fitting. But they added a word. I would change it to... hmm... 'If there's a race, Viper's bound to know about it.'"

Jack paused before shaking his head. "So are we racing or not?"

Faria smirked, and got into her beautiful blue car. She rolled down her window so she could hear Vince.

"From here to the next mile marker", Vince said. Faria smirked. 'This'll be too easy. Maybe I'll go easy on the kid.' "Ready, go!"

Faria laughed quietly at Vince's fairness in the race. She sped up, though not as fast as she could've gone, and let Jack get in front of her with that bike of his. He sped up rapidly, soon catching up, and passing Vince- with a wheelie even! Faria was impressed. 'Time to see if he could beat me now.'

Quickly speeding up, Faria caught up to Vince, before going full speed, quickly catching up to Jack, and passing him ever so slightly. However, he moved up in front of me for a bit. This happened several times, over and over again. Once they reached the mile marker, Jack had pulled up ahead, and won the race. Faria smirked and caught up to him, recklessly pulling in front of him, making him have to halt quickly.

"Well, done kid. You beat me", Faria says, holding out a hand for him to shake. He takes it hesitantly. "That's an impressive feat. No one's done that in quite a while. Even Vince can't keep up with me. He doesn't like telling me when there are races. But I know how to find out."

Faria frowns when Jack hesitated, as if a bit nervous to speak with her. However, Jack did speak, though a bit quietly, and not at all what Faria was expecting.

"I feel like I've seen you before", he murmurs. Faria's heart stopped for a brief second before resuming it's steady pounding.

"Probably just pictures on the internet or something. The news maybe", Faria shrugs, trying to get Jack to steer away from the fact that she goes to the same school. However, Jack was not so easily swayed.

"I feel like you go to my school", he says. Faria forces a chuckle.

"I race for a living, Jack", Faria rolls her eyes. "I get good money from it, and so I have no reason to go to school to do something that bores me to death."

Jack chuckles. "I wish I could say the same but unfortunately, I got stuck working at KO burger."

Faria's eyes widened ever so slightly, recognizing the name of the place Dahlia works at. She smiled at him, though he can't see it.

"Well, I'll let you go, Jack", Faria said. "I'm sure you have important stuff you need to do."

"Oh, uh, yeah", Jack said. "Nice meeting you Viper."

"Nice meeting you too, Jack!" 'He seems like a nice kid. Not someone I would want to hang out with for too long, but he's nice.'

Faria drove back towards Vince, and found him waiting with the two girls. "So... how was losing Vinny?"

Vince growled. "I could ask you the same question. You could have easily over-powered him at the beginning and then won! Why didn't you?"

Faria shrugged. "Eh, I figured I'd go easy on the kid. It is his first race after all."

Vince rolled his eyes. "Whatever. See you around, Viper."

Faria saluted at him, and he drove away, the two girls hitching a ride with him back to town. She let out a sigh of relief and drove home, tired out of her mind. Now, Faria loves a good race, but only having one hour or less of sleep is not the smartest idea. Grateful to get home, Faria quickly moves to her bedroom, changing into pajamas and falling onto her bed.

'Please no nightmares tonight', Faria begged as she stared up at the ceiling, before rolling over onto her side, and closing her eyes, sleep coming to her quickly.
