1: The Viper
Staring at the man in front of her, she watched for the signal. The signal to go. The flashlight turned on, and she sped past the man, making her way to the front of the pack of cars. Her shiny, bright blue Chevrolet Camaro sped past all the other cars, including a red Aston Martin. However, when she glanced in the rear view mirror, she frowned.
"Dang it. How could I lose you...?" she whispered. Paying attention the road in front of her, she almost missed when the red Aston Martin slowed down to be behind a black car. Gaping as the Aston Martin pushed the car off the road, sending it down a cliff, she quickly floored it, aiming to get away from the Aston Martin. After several twists and turns, she quickly found that she had come into first in the race. Smiling happily, she slowly rolled over to where the guy who gave out the winning money was. Rolling down her window, she looked at the man. He gaped at her, no doubt recognizing not only the car with the silver snake snaking its way down the side of the car, but the silvery blue mask that covered the girls nose and mouth. Grinning behind the mask, she held out her hand.
"I take it you recognize me?" she asks, her voice quiet and dangerous.
"You- you're the Viper! I didn't realize you were in town!"
She laughs darkly. "Trust me, if there's a race, I'm almost always bound to be there. Now... I expect you have my winning money?"
The man nods and hands over the $500 that she had earned. She grins at him before waving her fingers at him. Rolling up the window, she drove away to make her way back home. After several long hours, she soon pulled into the small town of Jasper, Nevada. It was late at night, and she tried to quietly pull into the garage. Unfortunately, there was someone waiting for her as she stepped out of her car.
"Really, Faria? Out illegally racing again?"
Faria rolls her eyes as she limps over to her friend, removing her mask. "You know it's the only way we're able to afford this house, Dahlia, which is why you don't make too much of a fuss."
Dahlia sighs. "I know... I only wish I could get a better job than at KO burger."
Faria limps into the house, going to the living room, Dahlia following her. "In Jasper, Nevada, you know that's just about impossible. Unless you want to work at the hospital?"
Faria chuckles when she hears Dahlia's unhappy groan. "And you know that's never going to happen with my phobia."
"Oh yes, what was it? Hemophobia? The fear of blood? Let's just hope that I never get into a horrible car crash with you as my only hope of surviving", Faria says dramatically as she flops down onto the couch.
Faria doesn't hear anything from her friend so she looks up to see Dahlia shaking her head. "Get some rest, Faria. I know you've got school later today, seeing as it's nearly three. in. the morning!"
Faria groans. "Fiiiiine, Moooooom."
Dahlia laughs, Faria grinning at the noise. "You know I'm not actually your mom right?"
Faria rolls her eyes. "Duh. But you sure act like it. Well... a better one than I ever had." Faria's gaze goes to the ground and she hears a sigh. Looking up, she sees Dahlia staring at her with sympathetic eyes.
"I wish I could've had a child but... well, we both know how that turned out."
This time it was Faria looking at the other with sympathetic eyes. She limps over to her friend, hugging her.
"Goodnight, Dahlia. See you in a few hours."
Dahlia chuckles. "Yeah, yeah. Go to bed."
Faria nods and salutes dramatically, before limping her way to her bedroom. Collapsing on the bed, she checks to make sure her alarm was set for 6:30 am. Since it was, she starts to close her eyes when a phantom pain hits her leg. Faria's eyes widened, and she lets out a small gasp of pain. Squeezing her eyes shut, she counted to ten, thinking of nothing but counting. When she got to ten, the phantom pain was gone, and she was able to finally close her eyes to rest.
