2: The Purple Monster

In the late hours of the night, Phoenix laid asleep in the living room on the pull-out couch. For the time being, the new defense attorney couldn't afford much more than a one bedroom apartment. And being the doting father that he is, he gave his daughter the only bedroom. But he does plan on finding a two bedroom apartment once he starts taking more cases. For now, though, Phoenix was perfectly content with sleeping on a cheap, springy pull-out couch if it meant his little girl could have her own room.

"DADAAAAAA!" Daisy screamed in distress from her bedroom.

Phoenix faceplants on the hardwood floor in his haste to scramble out of bed. He picks himself up and hurries to Daisy's room, where the three-year-old was sat up in bed, bawling her eyes out.

"Daisy? Baby-girl, what's wrong?" Phoenix asked, kneeling next to his daughter's bed.

"I....*sob*...I had a bad dream, a very bad, scary dream, Dada." Daisy whimpered, crying.

"Oh, sweetie, I'm sorry." Phoenix said, sitting on the small bed, pulling Daisy into his lap.

Clinging to her father like a koala, Daisy sobs and sniffles into Phoenix's neck.

"It's okay, flower, it was just a dream." Phoenix said calmly, rubbing Daisy's back.

"But if felt real, Dada! A mean purple monster attacked Auntie Mia in her office and hurt her really bad!" Daisy told him, crying a little harder.

"We gotta protect Auntie Mia from the purple monster, Dada! He's gonna get her, we can't let him get her!" she babbled through her tears, tugging and pulling at the collar of Phoenix's t-shirt.

At this point, Daisy was inconsolable and Phoenix's attempts to soothe her weren't working. So, Phoenix carries Daisy to the kitchen where his cellphone was charging on the counter and calls Mia. He figured that seeing that Mia was okay would help calm his daughter.

"Hello?" a tired sounding Mia answered.

"Hiya, chief, sorry to wake you." Phoenix said shyly.

"Oh no, its okay, I was already up." Mia yawned.

"What are you doing up at 2:00 am?" Phoenix asked her.

"What are you doing up at 2:00 am?" Mia replied throwing his question back at him.

"Because my darling three-year-old is in hysterics after having a nightmare about her favorite aunt being attacked by a purple monster." Phoenix said as his daughter wiped her snotty nose on his shoulder.

"Do you think you could talk to her for a bit? Let her know that you're okay...she's really upset about this, I don't know what else to do." he requested, frowning worriedly.

"Of course, pass her the phone." Mia said, her concern evident in her voice.

When Daisy is handed the phone, she immediately recounts her nightmare to Mia, her bottom lip quivering. Mia calmly tells her that she is safe and that she'll keep an eye out for purple monsters.

"Thanks, Auntie Mia, I feel a lot better." Daisy said, her voice raw and tired.

"You're welcome, sweetheart." Mia replied.

"I love you, Auntie Mia." Daisy mumbled into the phone.

"I love you too, Daisy. Now, you and your daddy have a good night sleep." Mia said to her before Daisy passes the phone back to her dad.

Mia and Phoenix talk for a few more minutes before Phoenix hangs up and puts his phone back on the counter. Next he cleans the tear tracks off Daisy's cheeks with a damp dishtowel.

"Wanna sleep in Dada's bed for the rest of the night?" Phoenix asked Daisy.

Daisy nods silently, eyes already starting to droop. Once he got her in his bed, she fell right asleep. Though, it took a few minutes for Phoenix to fall back asleep. He'd never seen his daughter so upset and distressed like this before, it honestly scared him a little. Feeling a protective urge, holds onto Daisy firmly, lulling himself back to sleep by listening to her steady breaths. The next morning, Phoenix lets Daisy sleep in. Last night was rough and he wanted his baby-girl to get more rest.

"Oh god, maybe I shouldn't have brought her to that murder trial. It's probably what caused her to have that terrible nightmare." Phoenix worriedly rambled, biting at his fingernails.

It didn't happen often, but there were times where Phoenix had doubts that he was a good father. That's why he was so grateful to have Mia in his life. She's been there for him since Daisy was born, letting them stay in her guest bedroom until he was able to get a place of his own. Mia was such a prominent presence in Daisy's early life that when the child was learning to speak, she mistakenly called her "Mama".

"You're a good father, Phoenix, don't ever doubt that." Mia tells him whenever he feels like a failure regarding Daisy.

After lunch, Daisy sat at the kitchen table drawing while Phoenix cleaned up.

"What are you drawing, Daisy?" Phoenix asked, noticing the look of deep concentration on Daisy's face.

"The purple monster from my dream." Daisy replied, scribbling at the paper with a crayon.

"Oh...uh...okay." Phoenix replied, unsure how to fully respond.

"Maybe this is her way of processing it. I've heard kids tend to process things through drawing and play." he said to himself under his breath.

"Here, Dada. Give this drawing to Auntie Mia so she knows what the purple monster looks like." Daisy said giving Phoenix the drawing.

Phoenix takes a look at the drawing his daughter handed him...

"So, this is him?" Phoenix asked.

"Yep. He might look like just a guy, but he's a very mean, very evil monster." Daisy said with a serious look on her face.

"He does lots of bad things, he's a bad bad man, Dada." she added.

"Alright, sweetie, I'll make sure Auntie Mia gets this. Now how about we try and forget about this bad purple monster, huh?" Phoenix said patting the top of Daisy's head.

"Okay, Dada." Daisy nodded.

Two days later, after a full day of working at the office with Mia, his boss tells him about her sister.

"I didn't know you had a sister." Phoenix chuckled with intrigue.

"Mhm. She's coming over later tonight, you and Daisy should stop by at around 9:00. I know it would be a little past Daisy's bedtime, but I really think she would love to meet Maya." Mia said.

"Yeah, that sounds great!" Phoenix agreed.

"Oh! Before I forget, Daisy wanted me to give you this. She was actually pretty insistent about it." he said, pulling a folded piece of paper out of his breast pocket.

"What is it?" Mia asked, accepting the paper.

"A drawing of the "purple monster" from that nightmare she had. She's still worried about you getting hurt." Phoenix answered.

Mia opens the paper, her eyes immediately widening in alarm at seeing the drawing.

"Is something wrong, chief?" Phoenix asked concerned.

"No-no no, everything's okay." Mia assured him, putting on a wide smile.

The look on Phoenix's face suggests that he wasn't exactly convinced, but he didn't say anything. He says one last goodbye to his boss then leaves to go home where Larry was watching Daisy.

"There's no possible way Daisy could know who Redd White is." Mia said sitting at her desk laying Daisy's drawing next to a magazine with the CEO of Bluecorp one the cover.

"First, the imaginary friend thing and now this? Daisy....what's going on with you, sweetheart?" she mumbled, biting the knuckle of her index finger.

When it was close to 9:00, Phoenix is driving to Fey and Co. Law Offices with Daisy sitting in the back, idly swinging her dangling feet.

"Dada...I think you just ran a red light." Daisy told her father.

"What!? Aw maaaan! That's gonna be expensive." Phoenix groaned.

Before entering, Daisy suddenly grips Phoenix's hand tighter and hugs his leg.

"Dada, something's....wrong." Daisy said, her voice shaking.

"What do you mean?" Phoenix asked, confused and a little worried.

"I don't know....my tummy feels heavy like something bad is gonna happen." Daisy replied nervously.

If Phoenix didn't know his daughter well, he would think that she was nervous about meeting Mia's sister, Maya. But he did know his daughter and he knew that she loved meeting new people. So what ever anxiety Daisy was feeling, Phoenix didn't know the cause of it....until he entered the office's client's lobby and saw that everything was too dark and too quiet. Now, Phoenix felt his own sense of dread form in this stomach.

"Daisy, sit and wait there on the couch." Phoenix tells Daisy, setting her on the couch.

Carefully, Phoenix opens the door to Mia's office. As he walked in, he saw things scattered all over the place. The sense of dread grows deeper when he steps on some broken glass from a knocked over lamp. Then he turns his head and sees something he'll never get out of his head for as long as he'll live....Mia, his boss, his friend, a woman who's been like a mother to his child was laid on the floor, slumped against the wall underneath the window with a bloody gash in her head.

"Oh my god!" Phoenix gasped, stumbling back, falling on his butt.

Hearing a frightened whimper, Phoenix looks to the corner of the room and sees a young woman dressed in odd purple clothing. He was about to ask her who she was when the mystery girl rushes over to Mia's side and starts screaming and crying for Mia to wake up...but she didn't. This girl was Maya...Mia's sister.

"Mia can't be gone, she can't be." Phoenix thought, too shocked to cry.

".....Auntie Mia?....." a quiet, brokenhearted voice came from behind.

Behind him, Daisy stood in front of the horrific scene, her eyes wide and tear filled, and Phoenix thought things couldn't possibly get any worse.
