1: Dada's First Trial
It was the day of Phoenix Wright's first trial since receiving his defense attorney's badge and he was in a bit of a pickle...he couldn't find a babysitter for his three-year-old daughter. So, he had no choice but to bring her with him to the courthouse.
"Is Auntie Mia gonna be there?" Daisy asked as Phoenix buckled her into her car seat.
"Yep. And you're gonna meet Daddy's old friend, Larry, today." Phoenix replied handing Daisy her stuffed fox.
"You'll like him, he's very nice." he added pressing a kiss to his daughter's forehead.
When he got to the courthouse, he met with his mentor, Mia Fey, in the defense lobby.
"Phoenix, you're running late...and did you seriously bring Daisy to a murder trial?!" Mia scolded.
"I couldn't find a babysitter, and you know I can't afford daycare." Phoenix chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Then tell me again why you're taking this case pro bono?" Mia replied, raising an eyebrow and crossing her arms over her chest.
"Larry's an old friend, I owe him one." Phoenix shrugged.
Mia rolls her eyes, smiling humorously, then crouches in front of Daisy.
"Hey, there, sweetie. I bet you're excited to be at work with your daddy, huh?" Mia said sweetly.
"Mhm. And getting to see you too is the best." Daisy nodded, grinning widely.
"Awwww." Mia cooed, hugging the three-year-old and picking her up to place her on her hip.
They enter the courtroom and stand behind the defense bench, Daisy sitting on top of it because she was too little to see over it. Across the room, Prosecutor Payne stands behind the prosecutor's bench, then scoffs smugly at seeing a toddler amongst the defense team. Then the judge enters and takes his seat.
"Dada." Daisy said, tugging on her father's sleeve to get his attention.
"Yes, flower?" Phoenix said, leaning towards the girl.
"He looks like Santa." Daisy whispered into his ear, cupping her hands over her mouth.
Mia stifles a laugh, placing a hand over her mouth, having overheard what Daisy said about the judge.
"Are the prosecution and defense ready?" the judge asked.
"The prosecution is ready, your honor." Payne said, straightening his tie.
"As is the defense, your honor." Phoenix declared confidently.
"Mr. Wright?" the judge said with a quizzical look on his face.
"Y-yes, your honor, sir?" Phoenix asked confused.
"...Why do you have a toddler with you?" the judge asked him.
"Ummm....because good daycare is expensive." Phoenix stammered, losing some of the confidence he had a second ago.
"Oh? Is it really that expensive nowadays?" the judge replied curiously.
"Sorry to interrupt this riveting conversation about childcare expenses, but I think we should get this trial going." Mia said politely.
"Yes, you're right, Ms. Fey. Bailiffs, bring in the defendant!" the judge agreed.
When Larry Butz was brought in, he immediately starts hollering and begging for Phoenix to save his skin.
"Hey, wait, who's the little girl?" Larry asked, his tone suddenly calmer, pointing at Daisy.
"My daughter." Phoenix told him.
"WHAAAAAT!? YOU HAVE A KID!? NICKYYYYYYY, HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL ME! AND WHY'D YOU GET MARRIED WITHOUT INVITING ME TO THE WEDDING!?" Larry screeched, pouting like a baby.
"I'm not married!" Phoenix argued.
"Oh, so you knocked some chick up on accident or something? Is that what happened?" Larry replied.
"Well....yeah, but it's a bit more complicated than that." Phoenix thought, with a grimace on his face, nervous sweat forming at his temples.
"Just shut up and sit down please." Phoenix grumbled, dragging a hand down his face.
Only after a few minutes of talking with the witness, Phoenix knew that it was Mr. Sawit who committed the murder. There's no way he could've known that the murder weapon was a clock if he hadn't been in the apartment the day of the murder.
"You heard it announce the time after you struck the victim and it burned it into your memory. That's why your testimony doesn't match the autopsy report. You're the guilty one, not my client!" Phoenix said, facing the witness.
Mr. Sawit cried out in frustration, doubling down on his story that it was Larry who killed the victim.
"Order! Order! I will not tolerate any outbursts in this courtroom." the judge said banging his gavel.
"Mr. Wright, do you have any evidence supporting this claim of yours, so far it just seems like speculation." he asked the defense attorney.
"It's simple, lets just cause the clock to sound right here and now." Mia suggested.
Turning the head of the statue, it announces the time, 9:25.
"Wooow." Daisy gasped in astonishment, finding the uniqueness of the clock interesting.
"It is interesting, but it still doesn't really prove anything." the judge said.
"I think it does. Prosecutor Payne, what time is it?" Phoenix disagreed.
"Hmm, let's see...11:25." Payne replied looking at his wristwatch.
Then a shocked look washes over his face, and everyone else in the courtroom also murmurs in surprise. The judge comments that the clock is two hours slow, then Phoenix points out that Sawit's testimony was also two hours off and reiterates that he is the true culprit. Sawit then tries to claim that Phoenix couldn't prove that the clock was running slow on the day of the murder.
"Well? Got an answer for me? Take that, smart guy!" Sawit snickered, nervously pulling at his tie.
This stumped Phoenix, he wracked his brain trying to think of a way to prove the witness's guilt. When he couldn't think of anything, he began to lose hope that he'll save his friend.
"HOLD IT!" Mia shouted, before the judge had the chance to release the witness from the stand.
She takes this moment to give her protégée a few words of encouragement.
"Yeah, Dada, you got this." Daisy agreed.
"But, how do I prove that the clock was wrong that day?" Phoenix sighed in frustration, scanning his eyes over the evidence before him.
"Maybe try turning your thinking around. What if it wasn't wrong...what if it was actually right?" Mia told him.
Daisy watched her father's various facial expressions as he was putting the pieces together in his head. Then, she could tell by the look in his eyes that he had figured it all out, and watches in amazement as Phoenix explains that the clock was off because of an overseas trip the victim had been on and that she had forgotten to set it back when she got home. Sawit finally breaks down and confesses to the crime.
"I declare the defendant, not guilty!" the judge said, giving his verdict.
The audience and defense team cheer as Prosecutor Payne threw a little temper tantrum at losing to a "rookie".
"Yay! Dada did it!" Daisy shouted excitedly, throwing her arms around Phoenix's neck.
Phoenix returns the hug, holding his daughter in his arms.
"Nice work, Phoenix." Mia congratulated, holding her hand out to him.
"Couldn't have done it without you, boss." Phoenix thanked her, shaking her hand.
Back in the defendant's lobby, Larry traps Phoenix in a bear hug, emotionally thanking him for helping him.
"So, Nicky? You gonna officially introduce me to my cute little niece, or what?" Larry said when he was done crying tears of relief and joy.
"Oh, yeah, umm...Larry, this is Daisy. Daisy, this is your Uncle Larry." Phoenix said introducing his daughter to his friend.
"Hiiiii!" Daisy said, waving and smiling.
"Awwwwwww, Nicky, she's so fricken precious!" Larry squealed, his hands on his cheeks.
Not thinking anything of it, Larry makes the comment that Daisy must look a lot like her mother because she looked nothing like Phoenix with her red hair and her reddish-brown eyes. He was too busy fawning over his new niece to notice the look of pain and discomfort Phoenix had at the mention of Daisy's mother, nor did he notice the comforting hand Mia placed on the lawyer's shoulder.
"And thank you for helping save my hind end." Larry said turning his attention to Mia.
"It was no problem. Just doing my job." Mia replied.
Larry gifts her a second Thinker clock he had made and offers Phoenix babysitting services as payment for defending him.
"Ummm, I don't know..." Phoenix hummed apprehensively.
"Hey! You can trust me, I'm totally responsible!" Larry replied, slightly offended.
"You were accused of murder." Phoenix pointed out.
"THAT WAS NOT MY FAULT!" Larry shouted immaturely.
By the time all the paperwork was done, the sun had began to set.
"You can join us for dinner if you'd like." Phoenix offered as Mia walked him to his car, holding Daisy's hand.
"Thanks for the invite, but I have other cases I need to work on, perhaps another time. Maybe then, you can tell me all about you and Larry's history." Mia said, placing Daisy in her car seat after Phoenix had opened the rear passenger door.
"I definitely will." Phoenix giggled lightheartedly.
"Bye bye, Auntie Mia!" Daisy interjected.
"Bye, sweetie, see you soon." Mia chuckled, sweetly kissing the girl's head.
As she watched Phoenix's car drive out of the courthouse parking lot, Mia couldn't stop thinking about what occurred in the elevator a few minutes ago. Daisy had been staring at the corner of the elevator, having a conversation with something that wasn't there. Phoenix explained to Mia that she has imaginary friends and that this was her probably making up a new one.
"His name is Mr. Greg. He's very nice and he's a lawyer just like Dada." Daisy had said.
Something about the whole thing itched at Mia's brain. Her mind pondered what Daisy's "imaginary friends" might actually be while her hand absentmindedly reached for the pendent on her necklace.
