Prickly Lady
EDIT: I know these pics are of Phoenix Wright and female Edgeworth in their outfits after Apollo Justice, but I couldn't find any other accurate pictures that fit the story. Also, most of the female Edgeworth pictures make her way too manly. I wanted one that seemed more womanly. That being said, Miley Edgeworth in this story does not wear this outfit. I will get into detail about the outfit just to give you an idea.
Summary: Phoenix had been dating Miley Edgeworth for a while and wants to decide what gift to give her to show his love for her. After a bike ride and coming across a familiar park, he finds the answer. A gift that is sweet and will bring back one of Miley's best memories of her childhood.
Female Edgeworth and Wrightworth AU
Phoenix had just finished his date. He hadn't started dating or finding love since college, and that was many years ago. Even so, the beauty he went out with wasn't exactly an orthodox choice, thus why the duo decided to go out at a different district in order to not to sickout. Phoenix was already gaining publicity from his previous major cases and his date already made a name for herself with all of the scandals. Dating a Defense Attorney would be just another scandal to add to the list, especially if that date was her well known rival in the district. Of course, she's faced other Defense Attorneys in a majority of her cases, but Phoenix was the most famous one.
Miley Edgeworth knew this was far too early, after the Matt Engarde case, to be dating Phoenix Wright, but she never could say no to those puppy dog eyes. Not to mention, she was a lady and ladies seemed to have this common trait of falling head over heels over their knight in shining armor. Hers just happened to be her disasterly foolish friend that had been pining her since she obtained her Prosecutor's Badge. Normally, dating your best friend seemed like disaster waiting to happen, if it didn't work out, but she couldn't find how her relationship with the man can be worse than avoiding him for 15 years before insulting him, pushing him away, leaving a Death Note before running off to Germany, then coming back only to see hate in his eyes. At this point, rejection or bad relationship felt like a small bee sting by comparison. It was probably why they finally decided to go out.
The date was at a simple tea shop that served good food. Phoenix and Miley enjoyed themselves, both relaxed and talking normally without spouting insults or Objections. It dawned on Phoenix how much he needed this, a simple relaxing time where he didn't have to worry about murder cases or paperwork and boy was there a lot of paperwork. He hadn't felt this excited about being with another woman since his first girlfriend. At least he knew Miley would never poison him. Her words were sharp enough to slit your throat, but she would never harm anyone. That much Phoenix knew.
Afterwards, they headed home, Miley driving them both home of course. Miley tend to wear her normal scarlet outfit she wore on every trial. It was a scarlet Victorian dress with a V shaped neckline over what looked to be like a ruffled snow white blouse undershirt. A rather large scarlet bow was placed on the collar of the undershirt that was turtleneck. The skirt part of the dress wrapped gracefully and neatly over the petticoat, though the skirt only reached two inches passed the knees. There was a black belt that wrapped around the dress and made a neat bow on the back. The dress' sleeves were wrapped tightly around Miley's arms to her wrist with the shoulders showing two soft puffs. Miley's hair, of course, was pulled back into a neat bun with two strands on each side of her face reaching down, almost touching, her blood red lips.
"Thanks for the ride. I know I've said this for who knows how many times, but I really had a good time," Phoenix replied with his goofy grin.
"Hm, I will agree. I had my fun too. I never had time for relationships outside of work, so I suppose this is something new," Miley replied, showing her smudge smile.
"Really? But, don't your milkshakes bring-"
"Wright, I will literally hit you and get us into a wreck, if you make that reference," Miley cut in, her glare from the reflection on the rear view mirror that struck Phoenix right in his very core and sending him chills.
"S-Sorry," Phoenix stuttered. Maybe Larry was right about Miley wearing the pants in this relationship.
"Just because I have men flaunting over me, it doesn't mean I've accepted their advances, especially from those unruly rich brats that think they're high and mighty, because they got their money from Mummy and Daddy," Miley replied, using a mocking British accent on the last three words. That made Phoenix laugh.
"I didn't think you hated the smug, rich type."
"I might be smug and rich, but I work hard to earn my living. Luxury means nothing, unless you work for it."
"Hehehe you bring up a good point."
"The smug and rich types would probably hate me anyways," Miles smirked before stopping by Phoenix's apartment. "We can try having a movie night next week."
"That sounds like fun. Yeah, we can have it at my place!" Phoenix grinned excitedly as Miley gave a wink.
"I'll see you then, Nick."
Miley drove off as Phoenix bit his lip, his body trembling with excitement as he heard a squeal from his own lips. He felt like he was in college all over again.
"She called me Nick. Wow, she hasn't called me that, since elementary school," Phoenix lit up. Hearts were practically pumping in his eyeballs as he giggled, running back inside his apartment.
Phoenix's dates with Miley always placed him in the best of moods at work. Of course, he never allowed his relationship to distract him from work. He was no Larry Butz. That didn't mean that he never felt excitement about their next date or plans together. In fact, Phoenix was thinking of giving Miley a gift, something romantic that she would love. Maybe flowers? But those easily wilt away. Jewelry? Maybe on their anniversary or birthday. Hm...
"Hey Nick, the Nickle and Steel Samurai have a Live Show this coming Saturday! I'm taking Pearly with me. Do you want to come?" Maya smirked. Since Matt Engarde was arrested, the Nickle Samurai had been replaced by another actor.
"Sorry Maya, but I have plans on Saturday," Phoenix replied.
"Plans? Like what!?" Maya asked with her usual puffy face.
"With um... my date. I planned a movie night."
"~Ooooooh, Nicky has a girlfriend!~"
"SHE'S NOT MY GIRLFRIEND! At least not yet anyways," Phoenix shouted before muttering the last sentence. Maya smirked her teasy smirk.
"~Suuuuuuuuuuuuure she isn't.~ Co'mon Nick, spill the beans, who is she? What is she like? Is she cute?"
"I can't say and.... yeah, she's cute," Phoenix muttered shyly, thinking in his head, 'when she's not angry. Though, I guess she's kinda cute when angry?'
"What!? Why won't you tell me!?" Maya asked, showing her puffy face.
"I-I-I promised her, Maya. I want to wait until it's official. Besides, Pearls might slap me if she finds out anyways."
"Co'mon, I won't tell anyone. Cross my heart and hope to die."
"Thanks, but I'd rather avoid getting her angry."
"....oh, I know who it is," Maya smirked almost devilishly. "It's Miley Edgeworth, isn't it?"
"Eep!" Phoenix squealed, blushing cherry red. How did she know!?
"Hehehehe I knew it. By the way, my sister totally called it."
"Please don't tell anyone. Promise?"
"Hehehe I promise. If you need any help with anything, you can always count on me, Nick."
"Sure, say, do you know what gift I should give Miley?" Phoenix asked, deciding to take advantage of Maya knowing.
"Sure hm.... she's certainly the high maintenance type," Maya said, tapping her chin.
"I know! That's why it's so hard to think of a present. All of them are over my budget!"
"Hm.... does she have a favorite band, show or something she collects?" Maya asked.
"She likes Hip-Hop, but I don't think she'd appreciate a CD or DVD as a romantic present and I've given her way too many Steel Samurai dolls," Phoenix replied.
"Oh co'mon Nick, she can't be that picky! Also, you gave her Steel Samurai Dolls and not me!?" Maya asked, showing her angry puffy face at the last sentence, which Phoenix ignored.
"Maya, this is Miley Edgeworth we're talking."
Maya sighed, "good point. Hm.... well, maybe you can give her something sentimental."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. Like what did you two do together as kids?"
"K-K-Kids? Maya, I don't think.... I mean...." Phoenix said, dabbing his pointer fingers together.
"Nick, as a woman, I can guarantee ya that girls are suckers when it comes to memories they've had with the ones they love. If you give Miley something that reminds her of your childhood memories together, she'll be swooning over all over you in a matter of seconds," Maya suggested.
"S-Sw-Swoon? Over me? You... really think so?" Phoenix blushed like a schoolgirl. He was already picturing the image in his head.
"Totally. I can see it now, 'oh Nicky, that is the sweetest thing you've given me. Please take me away into your mass broad arms. Ah!'" Maya teased, using a flirtatious accent while placing the back of her handover her head like she was going to faint.
"SHADUP!" Phoenix cried, blushing as Maya laughed. "That's not even how she speaks!"
"I'm teasing, Nick. Seriously, I think she'd love it."
"Okay. Th-Thanks. But, please don't tease me and please don't tell anyone. Miley is scary when she's angry."
"But, it's too much fun not to tease and besides, I can always use it as blackmail. Like, I won't say a word to Pearly if you take Pearly and I out for burgers Friday night."
Phoenix groaned, "fine."
"Yeeee~" Maya grinned, clasping her hands together, while hopping up and down.
Phoenix couldn't help, but smile. He was thankful to have friends like Maya, even if she teased about his relationship with Miley. It was probably better if Maya knew than Larry. If it were Larry, he'd probably ask if they had sex or not. Phoenix had to wonder why he was friends with people like Larry anyway.
On one of his days off, Phoenix decided to buy a gift for Miley. Maya had suggested something sentimental, something that would remind Miley of their childhood. Of course, Miley hated talking about her childhood memories before her father's death, especially with Larry. That was mostly because Larry always got her and Phoenix in trouble by dragging them into his crazy schemes or bothering Miley. Larry once took one of Miley's barbie doll and turned it upside down where the skirt of its dress fell over, showing its bare bottom. Miley often fought for her barbie back, even going as far as tackling him to the ground. Phoenix had to be the one to break them apart, even being the one to give back the barbie doll.
The more Phoenix thought about it, there wasn't a lot of childhood memories with Miley that didn't involve Larry. Even though Phoenix had a huge crush on Miley, so did Larry and it was often Larry Butz that teased Miley. These days, Larry wouldn't even dare mess with Miley again and unfortunately, due to his teasing as children, she held a grudge against the man for the way he treated her. The puppy dog love triangle prevented any young love memories between Phoenix and Miley. Any romantic things they did together were now just starting to happen.
Just then, Phoenix noticed something, while riding his bike. He came across the park him, Larry and Miley used to play at all the time. That was also the time Larry stuck a frog in Miley's dress. Phoenix remembered Miley screaming bloody murder, trying to get the frog out of her dress, while Larry burst out laughing. After the frog was dugout, Miley wept, then ran off, yelling at Larry that she hated him. Phoenix remembered how angry he was at Larry, even going as far as punching him for making Miley cry. That was when Phoenix ran after Miley, and then...
That gave Phoenix an idea for a present. Grinning, he got off his bike, then ran over into the park. Hopefully, it was still there and it was the right season. After getting Miley's present and placing them inside a bag, he tied it up, then rode back to his house. Luckily, he had time to clean himself and prepare his present before Saturday.
Miley drove by Phoenix's apartment to pick him up. Phoenix ran excitedly inside the car on the front seat, carrying a small plastic bag with him. Miley eyed the bag, her eyebrows risen.
"Hello. What's this you've got?" Miley asked.
"You're not gonna believe what I found on my bike ride," Phoenix grinned, digging inside the bag and pulled out a strange pear that was purple with some tan spots that looked like previously cut thorns grown on the fruit.
"Prickly Pears? I cannot believe this. Please tell me you wore gloves when picking these," Miley glared as Phoenix chuckled nervously, while rubbing the back of his neck.
"I got the thorns out. They're from the park. You know, that one cactus pear bush that grew near the playground?"
Miley's eyes lit, eyebrows showing surprise as she took a pear into her hand, then chuckled, "I cannot believe this. That cactus is still growing!? With all of these child protection laws, you'd think they'd cut it down by now." Phoenix got out a small pocket knife, then cut one end off before pealing the skin, and handing it to Miley. She ate the fruit, then giggled before getting out a handkerchief. "I forgot how messy this stuff is!"
"It's a good thing the color matches your car and outfit."
"Shut up!" Miley shouted, playfully pushing Phoenix's face before seeing a purplish stain on his cheek, then staring at her hand. "This is all your fault. I hope you're happy."
Phoenix laughed, then got out a wet wipe from his pocket to clean Miley's hand as she ate the rest of the fruit, trying not to get it on her dress and catching any droppings on her handkerchief. The second bite made Miley laugh as she put down the fruit on the middle tray. Phoenix took the fruit, then started cutting it into small bites for Miley to eat without getting herself dirty. He plopped one in her mouth as she ate it, seeds included.
"Mmm thank you," Miley said, sighing before wiping her face with her napkin.
"I knew you'd love them, even if they are very messy," Phoenix grinned, trying hard not to laugh.
"It's all your fault, you know," Miley said, trying even harder to not smile or laugh and look annoyed.
"You're doing an awful job at being annoyed with me. Though, I've never seen you laugh this hard, since that time."
"Yes...I remember. Larry was a jerk," Miley said, sighing as she recalled the old memory.
"Aww, co'mon Miley. He had a crush on you and was trying to show his love in his own way."
"I'd take the cactus fruit over a frog in my dress thanks! That was humiliating!"
"Yeah, I know. But, that's not the part I remember the most," Phoenix said, showing a small smile.
Miley sighed, showing a small smile as she recalled the memory of the events after she ran off crying for the frog Larry put inside her dress.
********
Young Miley ran across the playground and behind some pushes where she sat down, held onto her bent legs, then cried on the skirt of her dress. It wasn't a silent cry either. It was more like a wailing. What Larry did was the most humiliating thing he did. Miley wanted to crawl inside a hole and cry.
"Hey Miley, don't cry. Larry says he's sorry," Young Phoenix said, kneeling down in front of a small, crying Miley in a small, gray dress with yellow flowers. She wore two french braids down her shoulders.
"Tell him his apology is not accepted! I hate him and never want to see his face again!" Miley shouted, crying some more as Phoenix sighed defeatedly.
"I'm not supposed to say this, but... Larry only did that, because he really likes you. Like.... he really really likes you likes you," Phoenix said as Miley's weeping began ceasing slightly. She sniffed, wiping her tears with the back of her dress as snot began running down her nostrils. Phoenix, panicking, searched around, then took off his red hoody before wiping the snot from Miley's nose."Here."
"Thank you," Miley muttered, glaring at the ground. "I'm still mad at him, though." Her voice was still horse.
"Then, be mad, but please forgive Larry. Promise?"
"....only if he promises to come to school tomorrow with a frog in his pants. Then, I'll forgive him," Miley stated, showing a devilish smirk upon her lips.
"Harsh, but fair enough. I'd be lying, if I said I wouldn't be dying to see that," Phoenix grinned, laughing along with Miley.
Miley sighed, then asked, "but Nick, why does Larry like me that way? I always yell and fight with him, though he's the one that starts it." Her face looked sour as she stated the last part.
"Well... yeah, you can be... prickly at times, but... hm... actually, you're always prickly."
"Gee thanks!"
"No! No! No! That's not a bad thing! Sometimes being prickly can be sweet, like... oh those prickly pears over there!" Phoenix grinned, pointing to the cactus bush full of prickly pears.
"You're comparing me to a fruit!?" Miley asked sourly.
"Well, I love prickly pears. They're sweet, juicy and delicious!"
"They're also full of needles!"
"Yeah, but they're worth eating, once you get rid of the needles. I eat them all the time."
"I know. You and Larry alike are idiots, picking that fruit and stinging yourselves just to eat the deadly fruit."
"Hee hee, but if we didn't pick the fruits, we wouldn't enjoy their delicious taste. Some things are worth getting pricked with thousands of needles. You're definitely one of them," Phoenix grinned, rubbing his nose with his finger. Miley looked up at him with a baffled stare as Phoenix thought over what he just said, then blushed cherry red. "I-I mean... in Larry's head. Yeah!"
"...thank you," Miley replied, showing a small smile, looking over to the side. "Though, I'm still not going to eat the cactus pear."
"You're sure missing a lot. Say, what if I cut out the needles? Would you eat them then?"
Miley sighed, rolling her eyes, before replying, "if it makes you feel any better, I suppose so."
Phoenix grinned before carefully picking the fruit, cringing from the pain of tiny needles pricking his fingers. Miley sighed, rolling her eyes as Phoenix took his pocket knife, then peeled the skin and thorns before handing it to Miley. She took the fruit in her hand, then ate it. She began eating more as the juice from the fruit began dripping and made a huge stain all over her dress. She began laughing, then Phoenix laughed along with her.
********
It was a memory that still made Miley laugh to this day. Of course, her father was upset that she ruined her dress like that and she took the blame for ruining her dress. Since Miley was normally careful with her clothes, her father left her with a warning. Still, it was one of the happiest moments of her life. Miley smiled, remembering that memory.
"You know, that was the time I realized the love triangle you and Larry had over me. I never cared for romance and wanted to focus on studying to become a lawyer like my father. Though, what you did for me that time, I thought was the sweetest thing. You were willing to give up your chances with me just so I could forgive Larry for sticking a frog in my dress. Silly boy. You know, I would've forgiven him whether or not you told me about his crush."
"Yeah, you really are a prickly lady. I noticed the color of your clothes often match the color of the prickly pear," Phoenix said, rubbing the back of his neck.
"So, it does," Miley stated, smiling fondly.
Phoenix took Miley face, then kissed her gently on her lips before they parted. She giggled slightly, kissing the Defense Attorney back. She smirked, "speaking of memories, you just reminded me of the second best childhood memory," while starting the car.
"Oh? And, what would that be?"
"Watching Larry come to school with a frog in his pants," Miley smirked widely as her and Phoenix burst out laughing.
"Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Though, I would consider that my third best childhood memory."
"Oh? What is your second?"
"Watching him get the ultimate rejection by you," Phoenix smirked devilishly.
"You devilish man. Honestly, I consider that one my third," Miley smirked just as devilishly as she started driving.
"What was that you told him again? I forget."
"Or, maybe you just want to hear it from me."
"Is it really that obvious?" Phoenix pouted.
"Fine. I'll say it, 'If you believe you can win a girl's heart by sticking frogs in their dresses and stealing their toys, then perhaps you should go to Dating School for Dweebs,'" Miley repeated as Phoenix then laughed. "Hey, at least I didn't say it in public and was nice enough to wait until he finally confessed to me."
"True and you didn't reject me, at least not completely."
"That's because you confessed to me at the last minute right after my father died, you fool!"
"Yeah, sorry. I didn't know-"
"I know. Still, I don't think I could've truly rejected you, even if it was before then, and you still eventually won my heart. If that isn't an achievement, I don't know what is," Miley spoke proudly and smugly.
"It sure is," Phoenix grinned, rubbing the back of his neck. "So, where are we going to next?"
"Well, I was thinking of going to the Nickle and Steel Samurai Live Show, but it's inside the district and it's very likely we'll be spotted together."
"Ye...ah," Phoenix replied nervously, not including the other problem with them going there for their date. A very small problem.
"But, then come to find out, Ms. Oldbag is the head of security in that place and allowed me access to the Costume Room choose any costume I want and I snagged two of them for the two of us. This way, we can cosplay as Steel Samurai and Pink Princess, along with having front row seats to the Live Show. This way, we'll stay hidden inside the crowd."
"U-U-Uh whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?" Phoenix asked, sweat dripping from his face.
"We'll also be participating as participants in a Dance Off as part of the Live Show. Normally, I wouldn't be caught doing something so utterly foolish, but since we're in costume, we shouldn't have to worry about others finding out who we are. Isn't that wonderful?"
"...."
Miley Edgeworth truly did wear the pants in this relationship. Phoenix couldn't object to this, even with risking running into Maya and Pearl. Oh well, at least they'll be in costume. What could possibly go wrong?
A/N:This one shot went through three revisions. I originally was going to have this be a one shot where Pearl finds out Phoenix is dating Miley and Phoenix has to give her "the talk" about her misunderstanding his relationship with Maya. It had more focus on Phoenix's relationship with Pearl, but then I created another one shot with the similar plot with Pearl finding out Phoenix and Maya are not lovers that was executed better without Phoenix being in a relationship. So, then I decided to have this focus on Phoenix's relationship with Miley and show the gift Phoenix gave her (originally, the gift was left for interpretation, since the focus was on Phoenix and Pearl). It turned out to be better than what I had originally planned and includes a cute little story. Also, I had to look up any wild fruits that grow in Southern California and could be spotted in a park in Las Angeles. The prickly pears was a stretch, but fairly possible. It is a desert and where I live, there are eatable cactus leaves.
Also, DON'T PICK PRICKLY PEARS WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. This story is a work of fiction and is not to be used as a guide on how to pick prickly pears. If you want to try out prickly pears, buy them at your local store or look up a trusting guide on how to pick and peel them.
