Manfred Von Karma's Visitor

Summery: Miles Edgeworth pays a visit to Manfred Von Karma in order to gain the files of the IS-7 Case. As expected, his former mentor isn't willing to give that information away so easily. Though, this simple visitation may reveal a hidden weakness inside the stubborn-headed mentor that not even he is aware of.

Miles Edgeworth was waiting outside the door of the Detection Center where he would meet him. How long has it been since they've last spoken. Knowing the truth about the DL-6 certainly left a bitter taste in Edgeworth's mouth about the man. It wasn't something that could be forgiven, murdering your father. To think that this man was once admired in Edgeworth's eyes for seven or so long years. Why did he ever look up to this man? It wasn't like Edgeworth was naive about what this man did behind closed doors.

"What are you so nervous about? It's just Father," Franziska said in her usual stern, but calm voice.

"Hmph," Edgeworth responded, folding his arms. Him and Fransizka often treated each other coldly, but both knew how the other one felt.

"Wow, this tense atmosphere is making Uncle Ray very nervous," Raymond said with his playful grin, trying to break the ice.

Raymond Shields needed to ask the young prosecutor a simple request: files from the IS-7 case. Of course,Raymond had the files from Gregory Edgeworth, but there was also need for the files from the prosecution's side. Unfortunately, Manfred Von Karma never trusted his files to anyone and the only witnesses of those files were his students. Even just simply retrieving them wasn't easy, since that required a key to his household and a filing cabinet that required a thumbprint and voice activation. Even the emergency activation to that filing cabinet was hidden. Thus, the reason why Miles Edgeworth and Franziska Von Karma were to visit their former mentor and Franziska's father.

Kay did offer her assistance to steal that information, using her father's gadgets, but Edgeworth preferred to avoid stooping to illegal tactics. He'd rather talk to his old mentor and hope that his mood was well enough to allow entrance. It was unlikely. Knowing the man, he would be quite difficult. Manfred Von Karma never trusted anyone, not even his own family, to his files or work. No one even knew the location of his Will, if he had one. To live a life without trusting anyone, it was enough to make anyone bitter at the world itself.

Raymond looked over at Franziska, then Edgeworth. It was very clear how forced those furrowed eyebrows were. He saw them in Gregory before. He always made that look when he was hiding his true feelings. It was to prevent young Raymond at the time from worrying. Thus, Raymond grinned at the young prosecutor.

"Hey, no need to be tense like that,Prosecutor Edgeworth. You're going to break your face one of these days," Raymond teased.

"Har har," Edgeworth muttered under his breath, looking over at the door with his arms still crossed.

"Alright, alright, you got me. You just remind me so much of your father. He got like that when he was hiding his true feelings. If you're nervous or scared, it's totally normal. You can tell Uncle Ray."

"I'm fi- I'm not scared, if that's what you're wondering," Edgeworth replied, looking awestruck for a second before returning his face to being tense.

"Then, what's on Miles's mind?"Raymond asked. He often called Edgeworth by his first name when he was talking to him as Gregory's son and not a prosecutor. Edgeworth was often more comfortable opening up to him when called by that.

Edgeworth's tense face changed to deep sorrow as he spoke, "I'd rather not talk about it."

"I highly advise to not ask him, unless you want to be treated like a foolish fool," Franziska said, her arms crossed with her nose up in the air.

"We just brought in Manfred Von Karma, but only one of you may enter at a time," the guard replied.

"Understood," Edgeworth replied.

"Considering you are Daddy's favorite, I will allow you the honors of going first," Franziska said, placing her hand forward, pointing to the door.

"Much oblige," Edgeworth replied, bowing, before entering inside the Detection Center where his former mentor was waiting. After the door closed, Raymond laughed.

"I never knew you as the sarcastic type, Franzie doll," Raymond chuckled.

"I'm not and who said I wasn't being serious?" Franziska asked with a hard glare as Raymond's smile slowly turned into shock, sweat bullets showing on his face. "Even though my father has framed Edgeworth for murder and had killed his father once upon a time, that doesn't make him less of his favorite. My father isn't one to take in any mere rookie under his stewardship."

"W-Well yes, but he took in Prosecutor Edgeworth as part of his revenge against his fath- YEOW!"Raymond said before being whipped by Franziska's whip. He instantly jumped backwards.

"Don't be a fool! My father would not take just anyone under his wing, let alone a possible witness to his own murder!" Franziska cried angrily. "Edgeworth was taken under Daddy's wing, because he was a genius, a pure genius! He admired Edgeworth greatly and set him as an example for me. Now, why would Father allow a mere foolish fool, he's trying to place his foolish revenge upon, to be an example and older brother to his own daughter? You must be a bigger fool than I thought, if you truly believe that!"

Raymond was at a loss for words. Manfred Von Karma, the most corrupt and evil prosecutor he had ever met, actually admired Miles Edgeworth? There were so many questions, many of them he couldn't answer.

"Bah, I should've known your visitation stank and you even dragged my daughter with you on this quest!" Manfred spoke behind the glass wall, arms folded.

"There's no use escaping your crimes. You've already been proven guilty for Second Degree Murder. You're lucky they haven't brought out the death sentence," Edgeworth argued, arms folded. He wasn't even going to bring out the fact that Manfred's days as a prosecutor were gone thanks to his criminal record. There was absolutely no way he was returning back to the courts anytime soon.

"Hmph, you would not have that badge if not for me. Is this the thanks I get after all I've done for you?"

Edgeworth knew all this arguing was getting neither of them anywhere. He knew it wouldn't. It was why he often avoided arguments with his former mentor at all costs. Though, with everything that happened on Christmas at midnight, it made it hard for Edgeworth to hold any emotions back. This man knew it. He was only goating Edgeworth until visitation hours were over. The young prosecutor had to calm down.

Edgeworth slowly but surely unfolded his arms and placed them on the side. If he was going to get anything out of his former mentor, he had to make the man in front of him vulnerable. Doing that would not be easy. He knew the right buttons to push. Though, Edgeworth had to get the better hand. He looked at his former mentor in the eyes, mouth silent. If he was going to get anything out of him, he had to first slowly peel off the normal gestures he learned from his former mentor. This man may not like, even hate Edgeworth, but he loved his pride more than anything.

"Giving me the cold shoulder?"Manfred smirked almost devilishly. Edgeworth was used to this. It was just an intimidation tactic he knew too well.

Edgeworth had faced Phoenix in so many cases and in every single one of them, he was always inspired.Phoenix was the reason Manfred became much colder and harsher toward him than before. It all started with Redd White's arrest. The blackmailer no longer held power against Edgeworth, thus Manfred Von Karma became more controlling. Then, the Steel Samurai Case began, and Manfred became even harsher. Each loss effected this man more and more. He was a perfectionist, always obsessed in a perfect record. It was enough to drive Edgeworth wishing for his own death.

There was silence between the two.Manfred only stared at Edgeworth, who then turned his eyes the other way as to not meet with Manfred's. Edgeworth didn't look scared or helpless. He seemed as cold as he always was, but he was not crossing his arms and refused to look at his former mentor. Manfred continually kept his arms crossed, giving Edgeworth an intimidating look. This silence felt like it was going on for days, months, even years.

"IS-7," Edgeworth finally said. This took Manfred by surprise as his eyes widened. Quickly, his former pupil looked at him in the eyes when talking. Those eyes were no longer intimidating like they usually were. They were calm and collected. "I need your prosecution files for the IS-7. A body was found, the body that disappeared suddenly, resulting in a false Autopsy."

"Are you accusing me of falsifying the Autopsy!?" Manfred asked, seething angrily through his teeth. Edgeworth continually refused to look at him or cross his arms. "I see, you're still continuing with the silent treatment. We can keep this up all day, but I'm not giving you anything." He crossed his arms, closing his eyes as his finger tapped his upper arm. Edgeworth could tell that he was starting to get under his former mentor's skin.

Edgeworth then turned his eyes toward his former mentor after a half a minute of silence. He said, "Blaise Debeste is held responsible for the falsification of the Autopsy report he blackmailed Bonnie Young to create. The files of the IS-7 were written by you and kept under lock and key in your cabinets untouched. Unfortunately, it is locked with fingerprint and voice registration."

"Hmph, and you expect me to hand it to you on a silver platter?" Manfred asked again, opening his eyes, his eyes hardening.

"Absolutely not. You've never trusted anyone as far as I know. You've never bothered trusting your two students you took under your mentorship."

"Of course not! No one is capable of not committing crimes. Who else can I trust, but me? That's why I strive to perfection! If I cannot trust my perfect record, then who can I trust?"

"Unfortunately, your perfect record has tarnished. I assume you can't even trust yourself. You contradict yourself, Mr. Von Karma."

"H-How dare you!" Manfred shouted, his fists shaking. "You're just like your father! He was a fool! That's why I killed him!"

Edgeworth could feel his rage boiling, but took a deep breath. He had to calm down, if he was going to get anywhere. He could see that Manfred Von Karma was starting to lose his cool. He was just playing with Edgeworth's emotions. If Edgeworth wanted to get the answers he needed, he needed to play his cards right. He walked to the glass window, looking at his mentor in the eyes.

"Your filing cabinets certainly have an emergency code for if the voice command and fingerprint scan refuse to work. I know the filing cabinets it is located in. You showed it to Franziska and me," Edgeworth said.

"Still expecting it to be hand delivered to you. You really are a fool," Manfred said more calmly, his hands still crossed.

Edgeworth nodded, then untied his cravat. Manfred's expression slowly turned to pure shock as he watched his former student hold out the piece of neck clothing in front of him.

"After my father died, I had no one to turn to. My Aunt couldn't care less, besides for my education. You were the only person in my life that I had. I respected you, I did what you told me, I followed your teachings and I cared for your daughter. If I can't have that trust, then I have nothing left from you," Edgeworth said, lying his cravat on the counter.

As Edgeworth laid the cravat neatly on the counter, about to slide it over to Manfred's side, he heard,"birthday."

"Hm?" Edgeworth responded, looking up to Manfred's eyes, which were now unreadable.

"Files A through P is your birthday and files Q through Z is Franziska's birthday, zeroes included."

Edgeworth nodded, then tied his cravat back around his neck. He took a bow, then said, "thank you, Mr. Von Karma. You'll be happy to know that Blaise Debeste is under custody and will be punished for his crimes. Hopefully, IS-7 will finally be closed and your innocence for forgery will be proven. While I do believe you were involved with destruction and withholding of evidence, I never watched you create illegal evidence for as long as I knew you."

"You believed I was handed falsified evidence without knowing, even though the body was never found? You really are foolish," Manfred said, folding his arms with a small frown.

"My father believed you were guilty of it and Mr. Shields still believes you are the devil incarnate.Though, I have had my share of attacks for withholding, destroying and forging evidence, much of which I had no involvement in. I can understand your reasons for why you never trusted anyone. Though, I still believe among everyone, you at least trusted at least two to carry down your wishes for justice in a world filled with corruption."

"I thought I did."

"You still do. There hasn't been rumors about me forging evidence since my comeback. I'm sure you've noticed," Edgeworth smirked confidently, arms folded before hearing a ringing sound. "Visitation is over for me. You'll be seeing Franz."

"Hm," Manfred smirked devilishly, watching Edgeworth leave before slowly turning it into a frown. He felt foolish for showing even the smallest sign of weakness.

Arriving out, Franziska entered inside next. Raymond said, "so, how did it go?"

"I got the code. Franz and I will look through the files in the two cabinets," Edgeworth said.

"Seriously!? That man is tight-lipped! How'd you do it?" Raymond asked with shock-filled eyes.

"If I told you, you would call me mad," Edgeworth replied with a smirk.

"Co'mon, you can tell Uncle Ray!"

"..... in my own way.... I suppose...."

"Suppose what?"

".... I told him I respected everything he's done for me," Edgeworth admitted as Raymond's eyes widened. He crossed his arms. "Don't get me wrong. I'll never forgive him for murdering my father. Though, he is still my mentor and I became who I am today, because of him." His face turned sympathetic. "Sebastian never had a loving father. His father degraded him constantly to the point he felt so insecure that he HAD to prove himself better than everyone else. Blaise placed Sebastian in a gifted school, then cheated for him to pass all his classes, because he never believed in his son or his skills as a prosecutor. Thus, Sebastian depended on his father for everything and felt he had to constantly prove himself. He never knew how much his father truly hated him until he was kidnapped against his will." Edgeworth sighed, looking back at the Detection Center door where Manfred was located. "Mr. Von Karma never did that. He trained Franz and I to be strong prosecutors. He trusted us enough to conduct our own investigation, even when he told us to back off. When I felt unsure of myself, he helped me through my insecurities. I never felt degraded around him and as long as I did what I was told, I was rewarded."

"Hm... I suppose I can't fault ya for thinking that way. Manfred Von Karma is your mentor. It only makes sense you'd still think somewhat highly of him."

"I respect him. No more. I can hate someone I respect highly of," Edgeworth shrugged with a smug smile across his face.

"Hehehe you're contradicting yourself, Prosecutor Edgeworth, but then again, I am too. I don't like that you're still taking up prosecution, but I still love ya nonetheless."

"Thank you, Mr. Shields," Edgeworth replied, showing a sincere smile, while waiting for Franziska to finish with her visitation with her father.

A/N: Another Edgeworth story. I promise the next one will focus on another character. This one is more of a focus on Edgeworth's relationship with Manfred Von Karma, which I've seen turn sour in so many fan fictions. It's a one trick pony, so I don't blame anyone, but I think a lot of people forget that even though Manfred Von Karma was a horrible person, he was never abusive or a bad mentor for Edgeworth. In fact, there is a certain respect Edgeworth has for Manfred Von Karma, despite everything he's done. At the same time, I do think that there is a certain pride Manfred Von Karma has towards Miles Edgeworth, being he is a genius prosecutor and is a reflection of Von Karma's teachings. Even if Miles Edgeworth did decide to no longer follow his mentor's corrupt teachings, some of his teachings still follows (just not the corrupt ones). Also, if there was a crime Manfred Von Karma was falsely accused of doing, Miles Edgeworth and Franziska Von Karma would be the first to defend him.
