DL-6: R.I.P. Miles Edgeworth

Summery: Gregory Edgeworth had lost his one and only son to the most devastating nightmare of his life. See what happens if Manfred Von Karma decided to hurt Gregory in the worst way possible as revenge instead of taking his life during DL-6.

What if Miles Edgeworth died during DL-6 AU

It happened so fast and Gregory's worst nightmare had come true. His memories of that nightmare would repeat again and again in his head. Him, the bailiff and his one and only son were stuck in the elevator. A large earthquake caused the elevator to shake enormously, the box they were trapped inside eventually snapped from the cords holding them up before they came crashing down. Of course, no one got hurt and they were not that high up from the floor, but the rubble had cut off air circulation that was supposed to keep them alive in the elevator while the power was out. Gregory and the bailiff were able to pull the first set of doors open, but not the second that would lead outside. Unless the electricity returned, chances of escape were almost zero to non.

After about five hours, the bailiff started acting crazy from lack of oxygen, then began attacking him. Gregory could hear his son shouting at the man to stop attacking his father. That was when he heard a gunshot and everything turned to black. He could barely make out his little boy taking the bailiff's gun, then throwing it at him before the gun went off. Gregory heard a scream from a man, a man he knew too well and had fought against in court on the very same day.

When he woke up, Gregory found himself in a hospital bed with the worst News he could possibly imagine. Miles Edgeworth, his son, was shot and killed from a bullet to the heart from the bailiff's gun. Gregory was certain he was going to turn insane from this News. It couldn't be true! It just couldn't be! It was too much for the older man to bare.

Of course, Gregory was asked to testify about the events. Him and the bailiff were suspects of the boy's murder, but Gregory was certain it was a third party. He remembered that scream all too well and had seen the picture of his dead son. He even made it his mission to defend the bailiff in court, if he was accused. Who would do something like this!? Who would take his one and only child away!? Gregory knew who it was. That third party, the prosecutor he faced in court, Manfred Von Karma.

Unfortunately, the death of Miles Edgeworth was placed under Accidental Suicide. It was like that testimony and the evidence of the misfire didn't matter.

"You can't be serious. My son was murdered. The evidence shows that two gunshots were fired that day and Mr. Yogi and I testified of hearing the scream of a man after the first gunshot. They match up. This should be looked into!" Gregory argued with the detective.

"Listen sir, I understand you lost your son, but you cannot ignore the facts. Your son fired the gun, as shown by the fingerprints on the gun, and the gunshot took his life. This was the only conclusion we could come with. Even with the testimony of the possible two gunfires, there wasn't a second bullet found anywhere. It doesn't match with your testimonies like your son firing the gun."

"Are you saying that the gunshot in the door just fired through there, then flew back into my son's heart. That's ludicrous!"

"Mr. Edgeworth!" Gregory heard his name being called by another detective he knew well, Detective Badd. He came forward, then looked at the head detective of the case. "Excuse us." He led Gregory away to talk to him privately.

"What's the meaning of this, Badd. My son was murdered by a third party, the evidence proves this and they're all calling this an accidental suicide!?"

"Mr. Edgeworth, listen, there's more going on behind the scenes. That detective knows it was a murder, but if he was to bring it up or arrest the true culprit, there would be... terrible consequences."

"Terrible consequences!? What kind of consequences would keep the law enforcement, that is supposed to stand for justice, from uncovering the truth?"

"I suspect it's the Chief Prosecutor. It's no secret that he's been known to destroy and fabricate evidence; that is exactly what he did during your trial with Von Karma. I tried to help you with the investigation and recorded Von Karma's interrogation with Masters. Had I known it would result in your son's death... I would have kept a good eye on the both of you. Von Karma certainly is a master of his craft. He knows the best way of hurting a man is by using their child against him. I'm afraid, like what he did with Jeff Masters, he did the same to you in the worst possible way."

"Are you telling me the Chief Prosecutor is covering for a murderer? Why!? What has come in our legal system that we cannot trust our law enforcement or the courts!?"

"I don't wish to make you suffer more than you already have. The prosecutor I work for has been noticing this and is fighting against it. There's little we can do."

"And, we're just going to stand here and do nothing, while that man gets away with murdering my child!? Miles, my son... he was only a child! He had a future ahead of him and that man took it away! We can't just..." Gregory shouted angrily, then watched as his hands began to shake, the feeling of helplessness. His hat covered his eyes. "I became a defense attorney to help the law enforcement find the truth in ways they can't. I trusted them."

"Edgeworth..."

"What am I supposed to do? Why am I even here? My son was my motivation for staying in court and he was robbed from me. How are the courts and law enforcement any different from the cold blooded killer that took my son?"

".... I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize to me! You haven't done anything to help, other than tell me what I can't do. If you want to help me, then do something. Otherwise, don't bother talking to me," Gregory said bitterly before turning and walking away. The detective seemed dumbfounded, but also sad for what happened to the poor man. He then slightly glared.

"I never said I wouldn't do anything," Detective Badd said as Gregory stopped, his back still to the detective. "I've been helping you investigate your case for over a year. I even got you the evidence about the forging of the autopsy report and Von Karma's interrogation with Jeff Masters. I have no reason to help you and yet I did, because I trust you. Obviously, I will do everything in my power to investigate your son's murder, but I am just a detective. I'm not a lawyer or a judge. If it's justice you seek, then find a way to bring it with your own power."

"I'm just a Defense Attorney."

"Then, do what you always do. You're a private lawyer that is wanting to fight against the courts. That is all you can do. That is why you quite being a Chief Detective and turned to becoming a Defense Attorney. You found a way to save your son once, you can do it again."

"Thank you, Detective."

Gregory made his way, then left the courthouse. That coward was hiding, taking a vacation for himself, even though he never took vacations in his career. Gregory walked under the cherry blossoms, looking up at the courthouse. The detective was right, he was just a Defense Attorney fighting the corruption of the courts from the outside. As far as allies were concerned, it felt as if he no longer had any. All he had was his law firm that was only there for those accused under false charges. He worked in that office, because he had friends in the courts and police station. Now, he had no one. Times have changed.

Gregory remembered when he first decided to become a Defense Attorney. He wanted to save his former lover from false charges, who was still carrying Miles at the time. He wasn't able to save her, but he was able to save Miles and wanted to save others that were also convicted under false charges. He knew from experience that there were still those few in the law enforcement and legal system that would sneak in falsified evidence. Though, it was only a few, the Chief Prosecutor especially. Though, he didn't expect him to be powerful enough to be untouchable.

"Mr. Edgeworth!" Gregory heard his assistant, Raymond Shields. He showed a concerned expression. "I was worried. With almost losing you and..."

Gregory showed a smile and chuckle. He said, "my apologies. I didn't mean to worry you. How's the office?"

"It's good! I decided to close up for today for... you know..." Raymond replied sadly, bowing his head.

"Thank you. Though, I need you to continue running the office for me."

"What about you?"

"... I don't know. I need some time to morn for my son."

"I understand. Please, don't push yourself, sir."

"Thank you," Gregory replied to his disciple with a small smile before making his way home.

Gregory couldn't count the amount of tears he cried alone. Without Miles, the house felt so empty and deserted. It felt as if everything he sacrificed and gave for his most precious treasure was for nothing. He had a failure. Here he was supposed to protect his son and not only did he fail to do so, but he failed to bring justice to the one who took his little boy from this world. He knew revenge would never bring Miles back, but then what was he supposed to do?

The only thing Gregory could think of was what his son would want him to do. Of course, Miles would want his father to continue working at the law firm and saving the victims that were falsely charged. Gregory smiled, remembering how much his son enjoyed watching him in court defending those that couldn't defend themselves. He always bragged about growing up to become a lawyer just like him. It was that reason why Gregory always showed up in court to defend his clients. He smiled, holding the only thing that reminded him of that little boy, that small picture of Miles Edgeworth and his two friends he met in school.

What would those two boys want him to do? They had lost their precious friend like Gregory lost his son. They'd want him to avenge their friend, wouldn't they? Perhaps. They were equally victims of losing someone precious to them and only had known him for several months. Gregory could only imagine the heartbreak those boys felt in hearing that they would no longer see their friend again. Life was cruel, but even crueler that the one that took their friend from this world would get away with his crime.

It was then that Gregory realized he could not continue on like this. He couldn't wait for another opportunity to present itself when he could take Manfred Von Karma to justice. All evidence was against him and it was sitting in Criminal Affairs rotting. It would only be a matter of time before someone would transfer those files and evidence, then destroy them. Right now, they couldn't, because they'd be caught. But, time was ticking.

It was true, Gregory needed time before he could save his son, but who could he turn to in order to make sure Manfred Von Karma had nowhere to hide. Gregory could not trust anyone in the court anymore. The only person he could trust in Criminal Affairs was Detective Badd and as he had stated, all detectives can do is investigate. It wasn't their job to hand over the evidence to the courts. Using the evidence and testimonies to indict the criminal was the job of the Prosecutors.

The prosecutors...

Was there a prosecutor that Gregory could trust? He knew some respectable ones he came against, but if they were of any help, he'd have found one by now. Even the prosecutors that Gregory had known to fight for justice were not powerful enough to bring Von Karma into custody. They were all under the Chief Prosecutor, who was covering for Von Karma. That would mean that if Gregory was to depend on a Prosecutor, he'd be asking one to fight against their boss. He needed one that was not afraid to challenge the higher ups, that would fight for justice with nothing to lose.

This would take some thought, but Gregory knew deep inside there was only one prosecutor that would be brave and strong enough to do so. The question was if this man was willing to sacrifice everything for this one job. Would he do it for the little boy Gregory held in his hand. The answer couldn't be easier. He did it before and he certainly can do it again. Though, Gregory needed time to think through this and talk to Raymond before he made his decision.

"What do you mean you're quitting!?" Raymond shouted frantically.

"I'm trading in my Defense Attorney's badge. I became a Defense lawyer, because I wanted to help those in the courts and Police Department find the truth in ways they can't. I would do so through my client. I would fight against the corrupt prosecutors and detectives that squirmed their way into the courts. Unfortunately, after DL-6, I've come to realize that those corrupt people in the courts are powerful enough to hide from the law and I don't have a lot of allies from the inside to truly take them down, Chief Prosecutor Debeste especially," Gregory said.

"I understand, but you're just going to go up and quit? Listen, your son, he wouldn't want this!"

"I never said I was going to quit, just simply change to a different field."

"Huh? What do you mean?" Raymond asked, thinking deep.

"I'm going to turn in my badge, but I'm going to trade it for a Prosecution's Badge. It would be no different from when I quite as Chief Detective for a Defense Attorney's badge."

"Wh-Wh-Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!? Mr. Edgeworth, you can't be serious! A prosecutor!? That's like.... the enemy's side!"

"True, but I've always believed that the prosecutors fought for justice. At least, I thought they did. I understand now that there are powerful corrupt ones lingering in the shadows and one of them is the Chief Prosecutor. I can't ask any of them to go against their superior, so I will do so. I'm sure Debeste would be more than happy to see me again and there's no other way I can go up against Prosecutor Von Karma as a Defense Attorney again. That would mean I would have to hope there is someone that was framed for his crime. It won't take much to do so, since I already passed the Banner and they would certainly take me in due to my experience in the law firm and Criminal Affairs. I trust you will look after the office. It's yours now. I think Shields Law Office has a nice ring to it."

".... you're really doing this, aren't you? Once you've made a decision, you never turn back from it... you're going to become a prosecutor... my... enemy."

"Perhaps. I'm sorry, Raymond. You were a good student and I couldn't be more prouder, but times are changing. I... hope there are no hard feelings," Gregory said, packing his brief case, then making his way out of the office.

"Doing this won't bring Miles back," Raymond glared, his voice sounding like it was pleading. "Even you have once said revenge only poisons the mind."

"This isn't about revenge. My reasons for doing this are no different from when I was a Defense Attorney. I couldn't save Rachael, but I was at least able to save Miles. Now, I couldn't save Miles, but there are two boys I can at least save. I want this office to at least have one prosecutor they can trust to always find the truth and not cover for anyone. If that prosecutor is me, then you will see that star badge on my collar yet," Gregory said, showing a bitter smile. "I'll even make sure it's shown there just to stick it to Von Karma."

"..."

"I apologize for failing to be a good mentor."

"No, it's not that, it's..." Raymond said, then tears began shedding before running up and hugging Gregory. "When I see you in court, I'll give everything I've got! I won't hold back, sir! S-So... you better watch out, alright!"

Gregory was taken aback, but then smiled before returning the hug. He had already cried too many tears to cry again, so he held his now former student tightly. Raymond sniffed before Gregory pulled back, then said, "make me proud. Remember everything I've taught you. I'm not going to pull any punches just because you're my former colleague."

"Good. I'll still check up on you. Please, take care of yourself."

"I will. Farewell," Gregory nodded, then left his office for good. That was the last time he ever stepped into his law now former offices.

It had only been nine years later. Now, Prosecutor Gregory Edgeworth had made a name for himself as a force to be reckoned. He came in like a tidal wave, showing that the former Defense Attorney had grown bitter than before. He showed no fear and hardly sympathy to the defendants compared to when he defended his clients as a Defense Attorney. He was now named the Demon King Prosecutor by how merciless he was on trial. Though, it wasn't to say he was like this outside the courtroom.

Raymond began seeing this too. DL-6 had made this man sad, lonely and bitter. Of course, he paid his former mentor visits once in a while, but it was clear that he was no longer as cheerful as he used to be. Miles Edgeworth was Gregory's light and that light was taken from him. It left a cold, empty hole in his heart that had not yet been healed.

Though, because of Gregory's blunt strategy in prosecuting, he was not only able to drag Manfred Von Karma to court, prove his guilt for murdering his son and give him the death sentence, but he also successfully took down the criminal underworld. Gregory was no prosecutor going after small fries or your typical killers, he went after national and global criminals and murderers. Those that performed criminal activities behind the scenes and in the seats of high positions such as judges, mayors, governors, presidents, ambassadors, etc. He eventually became close with Prosecutor Byrne Faraday through Detective Badd and helped him solve the Yatagaratsu case.

Having been in the prosecution's office, Gregory had come to know many of his colleagues and learned that there were those he could trust. He had become close with Byrne Faraday, who was also a single father and raising a daughter of his own. Winston Payne seemed alright and remembered him in some of his former cases. One person Gregory came to rely on the most was Detective Gumshoe, who was Detective Badd's student. He was clumsy and a bit of an idiot, but his liveliness and loyalty earned Gregory's respect for the man. He became Gregory's detective working on all of his cases.

One day, Gregory heard his phone ring, then picked it up, saying, "hello, this is Prosecutor Edgeworth's office. Gregory Edgeworth speaking."

"Ah, Mr. Edgeworth, there's someone on the phone for you. His name is Phoenix Wright; claims to be a friend of the family. Might you know him?" The lady at the front desk asked.

"Phoenix Wright? The name does ring some bells. Could you put him on the phone for me?" Gregory asked.

"Of course! Hold on one moment," the lady replied.

Gregory waited for a minute or two before he heard a voice of a young man that could be late High School to early college age. He said, "hello, is this Gregory Edgeworth?"

"Yes, this is he, Mr. Phoenix Wright. I hate to ask, but who are you? I'm afraid I don't remember having met you, though your name does seem to ring some bells," Gregory asked.

"Oh, sorry. It was a long time ago. I was Miles' friend from school. You know, before he..."

"Oh! OH! Yes, I remember now. He had two friends. One had blond funky hair and the other one was a spiky brunet."

"Y-Yes... the spiky one is me hehe."

"Ah, how've you been, Phoenix Wright?"

"J-Just call me Nick. I'm doing well. I was actually going to ask about you."

"Me? Of course, I'm doing splendid."

"Really? That's good. I was worried. I heard you're a prosecutor now."

"Yes. A change of pace, I suppose."

"What made you decide to become a prosecutor? I... hope you don't mind me asking."

"No, it's fine. As I said, a change of pace. Why do you ask?"

"I don't know. I suppose it's non of my business, but... I guess I got a little worried. I heard you didn't do so well after Miles died. Larry and I didn't take it too well either. I mean... it was so sudden and..."

"Yes... I can imagine. I suppose I can't lie. My son's death- no murder was... very painful."

"... I see. I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to invite you over at this tea shop called the Green Leaf, if you have any time. I'd like us to catch up and stuff. I'll bring Larry along too."

"Sure, if it's no trouble for you boys. I don't want it to look strange for an old man to be hanging out with two young men."

"Na, it's fine. Neither of us have fathers and you were kinda the closest thing to a father."

"Oh... I had no idea. In that case, I'd love to come. I have time off tomorrow."

"Sure! 3:00. Just try not to hurt yourself, alright."

"Okay, son. See you then," Gregory replied before hanging up.

It was strange he'd take a phone call from the old friends of his son that became the reason he became a Prosecutor. Ever since taking up prosecution, Gregory had been exposed to the darkness lurking inside the courts and governments. Things he had believed only existed in the tabloids were things he saw with his very eyes and realized he fell victim to during DL-6. He believed it was his duty to clean up the corruption, because no one else could. In truth, Gregory had nothing left to lose, after losing his son. Even his badge, while used it to fulfill his duty, was nothing to hold against him.

There was a reason Gregory was now called the Demon King Prosecutor. Obviously, he held no sympathy toward the defendants, because non of them were the kind of clients he took in during his days as a Defense Attorney. Those clients were normal, everyday people that rather got themselves caught in trouble or found themselves in trouble. They weren't completely innocent, some were even guilty of their crimes, but they had families, friends, people they loved and cared for. The defendants Gregory prosecuted in court were ruthless. They would stop at nothing to get away with their crimes both literally and figuratively. Even Raymond eventually decided not to take those people as his clients, because of how despicable they were. Gregory only took those kinds of cases, because no one else had the guts to. These were the people that had dirt on everyone in the courts and prosecution's office, except for Gregory Edgeworth.

It was not to say Gregory never showed any sympathy or compassion. The ones he showed the most compassion to were in the prosecution's building. All of them worked their hardest for the sake of their family and loved ones. It reminded him of when he had Miles. They were all good people, but many of them were afraid and became puppets of those that sought power and control of the law and public, much like he once was as a Chief Detective. It was because of that, that Gregory had to be the one to fight the bigger fights in their stead. He could see how much facing all of this was hurting Raymond, having to watch his mentor turn bitter and ruthless for the sake of everyone else.

The next day, Gregory arrived at the Green Leaf tea shop at the time he was told. The two young boys had grown. The blond one, Larry Butz, was dressed in a patrolman's uniform, while Phoenix Wright was in a red sweater and a pair of jeans. Phoenix seemed like a bright-eyed young man. They seemed so young and full of energy.

"Hey Pops, how's it hanging?" Larry greeted, showing a thumbs up.

"Hi, Mr. Edgeworth sir. It's good to see you again after all these years," Phoenix greeted cheerfully.

"Hello to you both. It seems you've grown into such fine young men," Gregory greeted, shaking the boys' hands. It made him happy to see these boys. They sat down, having ordered their tea.

"So, how's it been? I guess you've crossed over to the dark side, huh?" Larry asked before Phoenix elbowed him. "Ow! What?"

"Haha I suppose you could say that. My job isn't exactly safe per say. I deal with a lot of dangerous individuals," Gregory said.

"Yeah, I read in the Newspaper how you exposed the Ringleader of the International Smuggling Ring and your chase with Dogen. Both sound pretty scary," Phoenix said.

"I know. I'd hate to meet one of those people. Ugh," Larry said, shuttering at the thought.

"So, what made you decide to take up prosecution?" Phoenix asked.

"Hm.... I suppose because no one else will. A majority of my colleagues have families, friends, possessions, fortunes and reputations they want to protect. For me, I don't have either of those things, not anymore. I don't have anything or anyone I'm protecting, so I'm not afraid to take them on," Gregory replied simply.

"What about Mr. Shields? Don't you have any friends?" Phoenix asked.

".... I do, but after losing Miles, losing a friend, a colleague or my former protegee doesn't feel as... devastating. I can't say things can't get any worse for me, so what else can be taken from me, my life? I think that's the only precious possession they could take from me at this point," Gregory replied, almost like it was no big deal. It seemed to scare the two boys.

"That must feel pretty lonely," Phoenix muttered sadly.

"Gee, when did the atmosphere get so gloomy here all of a sudden?" Larry asked, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. Gregory chuckled slightly. Phoenix wasn't wrong, though. He had been feeling lonely.

"What happened? Why wasn't the murderer caught for five years?" Phoenix asked.

".... cover ups and... other things. The Chief Prosecutor at the time was Blaise Debeste, someone I know far too well. He was trying to keep my son's murder in the shadows. Luckily, it's not his choice of who becomes a prosecutor of that building. Hehe that man hated seeing me walk across that hall to my office. Tried to break in a few times," Gregory explained, smiling bitterly.

"That's terrible."

"You're telling me. Why didn't any of them do anything!? I mean... why didn't they investigate or look into it!? Certainly, one of them must've known something was up!" Larry shouted frustratingly.

"Blackmail. Many of them were blackmailed. Detective Badd did console with Prosecutor Faraday and he was looking into it, but he would have had to use underhanded tactics. I pleaded with him not to stoop to those levels and allow me to handle it. I had nothing to lose, so I took the case," Gregory said.

"That must've been stressful," Phoenix said.

"It was. Losing my son was the worst thing to happen to me. Even now, I sometimes morn for him."

"I'm sorry. I'm just bringing up old wounds."

"No, Nick. You did nothing wrong. You were just as much a victim as me and your friend over there. Miles was a wonderful young man. I... I would have liked to have seen him grow up with the two of you. If I could change one thing in my life, I would trade my life for his."

"Mr. Edgeworth..."

"Pops..."

Gregory blinked, then took a deep breath before saying, "excuse me. I'm just an old man chasing after what-if's. Miles is gone and he's never coming back."

"Sir, no offense, but... it's fine to tell us. It helps when we talk about it. Nick and I do all the time, reflect on the old days when the three of us got in trouble at school or played together. Did you know I once stole his lunch money? I ended up giving it back and dropping it in his casket," Larry admitted sadly.

"He's right. It helps to talk about it. You can tell us. Have you talked to anyone about this?" Phoenix asked as Gregory shook his head. "I can't imagine how painful it must be to carry this burden alone."

"You boys really are something. Shouldn't you be thinking about things like picking up dates or passing your next exam?" Gregory asked.

"Hehe probably, but... you seemed like you could use some company," Phoenix replied.

"Yeah. I mean the way you present yourself in court, it was sad from where we were standing in the gallary," Larry said.

"... I'm sorry for worrying you boys," Gregory said sadly.

"We want to help you. I can assist you on something. I'm already thinking about taking law and becoming a lawyer. I could use the experience," Phoenix insisted brightly.

"N-Nick... I understand you mean well, but I don't know if Prosecution is something you'd be interested in."

"I wasn't talking about that. I'm thinking of becoming a Defense Lawyer actually. Though, I've heard that you could gain more experience, if you were to work for the prosecution's side for a certain amount of years."

"Really?" Larry asked, dumbfounded.

"I... appreciate the enthusiasm, but I have to decline. The cases I take aren't your run-in-the-mill criminal activities like traffic accidents or gang murders. These people are cruel and will hurt you in worst way possible. They will blackmail you, perhaps even kidnap and torture you. I don't want to be responsible for your safety."

"I don't care. I never grew up with parents. Miles and Larry were the only family I had," Phoenix said with determination in his eyes, much to the former Defense Attorney's shock.

"Nick..."

"After Miles died, I... I didn't know what to do. It felt like a part of me was ripped away. I was dealing with Depression for three or four years after that."

"I'm sorry."

"When I read the Newspaper and saw you there, it reminded me of those years. I felt alone and scared. I'd lock myself up in my room and never come out, unless I was hungry or needed to go to school. Even Larry was scared. He had to drag me out a couple of times. The way you carry yourself out. You can't tell me that you feel that way too."

"..."

"Mr. Edgeworth, no Greg," Phoenix said as Gregory looked up at the youthful boy's eyes. "Let me help you. Miles wouldn't want you to stay like this. He'd want you to be happy."

".... I'll think about it," Gregory replied kindly. It wouldn't hurt, if he had the boys clean his office once every week or something. It wasn't like they'd be standing in court with him. "Though, I'm not going to allow you boys to be part of any investigations or standing in court with me. I'm sorry."

"That's fine. We understand, Pops," Larry replied.

"Okay," Phoenix replied, showing a kind smile upon his lips.

Gregory decided to allow the boys to clean his office once every week. It wasn't a necessity, but he was able to spend time with the boys. All three of them had been scared by the death of Miles Edgeworth and this was a burden all three of them carried. It felt... nice to have others he could speak to. Perhaps Gregory can finally find peace after all these years. It has already been nine years. It was time to allow his son to rest happily.

A/N: I decided to submit something for Halloween by presenting another Gregory Edgeworth story, this one is much more depressing. It's also the reason why I don't believe Manfred Von Karma is as evil as people make him out to be. If he was the kind that wanted nothing, but to hurt Gregory in the worst way possible, he would've taken Miles Edgeworth's life during DL-6, not Gregory's. I think Manfred killed Gregory in the heat of the moment before realizing that he had a son and had ruined a child's life. Though, it was too late. I think that's why he took in Miles as his student. I think Manfred felt guilty for taking Miles's father away and thought taking him in as a student would get rid of it. It felt strange how Manfred Von Karma was always being supportive and spoiled Miles a bit, especially in the anime as a kid, but then suddenly did a 180 fifteen years after the murder. I have a head canon on why I think he eventually stabbed Miles in the back, but I will let that wait until you guys get the one shot explaining all of that. Until then, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
