Comatose
Summery: AU It has been a fewdays since being proven innocent of Robert Hammond's murder andshooting his own father during DL-6. His father is not dead, butmight as well be, the incident putting him in a state of coma for 15years. With New Years coming up, the Prosecutor Miles Edgeworthdecides to pay a visit his father in the hospital and face his fearof his father waking up to a disappointment of a son.
A Gregory Edgeworth coma what-if scenario.
Considering the outcome of the trial, Miles Edgeworth was allowed to return back to work. Lana Skye was especially relieved to find one of her best prosecutors back in the office. The DL-6 case was finally solved and Manfred Von Karma's hold on him was finally released. Of course, Miles had been ignoring all the phone calls from Fransizka, the daughter. He needed time to think, to figure out what to do from here on out. He knew for certain he couldn't go back to the man he once was.... he couldn't.
The prosecutor remembered that memory quite clearly; the day that changed his life forever, the day his father was shot and fell into adeep sleep, a coma-like state. He wasn't dead, but he might as well have been. The doctors said there was a chance that if his father woke up, he'd have no memory or would be brain dead. Though, no matter the outcome, his father would not be the same. It devastated the young Miles Edgeworth to the point he forced himself to accept the fact his father was dead.
Of course, the ridiculous Phoenix Wright had been badgering him about visiting his father. Even if his brain was damaged somewhat, he was still his father no matter what. Having been without parents all of his life, Phoenix found his friend and rival lucky to have his father still alive, regardless of the outcome. He could never understand. He was an orphan, who never experienced having and losing parents and yet, once again, was giving the young prosecutor more unnecessary feelings. 'What son wouldn't visit his father in the hospital?'Obviously those morons that asked that question didn't understand what it was like to truly lose a father both physically and mentally. It wasn't like Miles could get a spirit medium to call his father back from the dead. It wasn't much, but it was at least something.
Miles was closing up his office. Tomorrow, he would have his three days off due to the New Years. At least there was something he could look forward to. As a prosecutor, he had Holidays off. It was always nice to have days where he didn't have to do anything. Those were the best times. Now, that Manfred Von Karma was out of his life, he could truly do nothing with his schedule wiped cleaned. Was this what it truly was like to be free? No blackmails, no doubts in his investigations, no looking after a certain incompetent detective, no idiot childhood friends bothering him with calls and letters, no mentors that complained about every single little thing he did. No,he was free.
Free huh? Well, not completely. Had Miles known that his former mentor was the one that shot his father, he'd have become a Defense Attorney a long time ago. He couldn't just quite his job and be done with it. He had a responsibility and can't think about his own selfish desires. That was just the way it was. Besides that, he did enjoy his job anyways and it wasn't like he didn't save other people as a prosecutor. Still.....
what was Miles Edgeworth supposed to do now?
"Mr. Edgeworth, I expect you're doing well," Miles heard his boss say at the door. She was very stern, but always looked after her employees, especially the young lawyer. "Do you have any plans this New Years?"
"Just some New Years tea and quiet alone time," Miles replied, while dusting the shelves.
"I see. If you're ever feeling alone, you know you're always invited over. Ema is always excited to have you around, you know,"Ms. Skye replied plainly. It was clear how much she looked after the other prosecutors, especially around the holidays. Not all of them had families. Some spent their holidays alone and with Manfred Von Karma out of Edgeworth's life, he had no one to spend the Holidays with, except maybe Fransizka, who was in Germany right now.
"That's quite alright. Quite refreshing to spend my holidays without..... worry."
There was a eerie quietness in the air. Lana Skye had watched the court and thus she knew what the young prosecutor was talking about.Without Manfred Von Karma and Redd White, Miles Edgeworth no longer was a slave to perfection or a past case he was involved in. That was all solved. It made the Chief Prosecutor almost jealous. Still...
"Do you have any plans to visit your father?" Lana asked. This was enough to make the young prosecutor stop what he was doing. He looked at his superior without emotion. "I don't mean to place salt in the wound, but... right now, he's the only family you've got. I would keep him as close as possible, even if he might hate you."
Miles could only nod as he replied, "I'll keep that in mind." He smiled, then took a bow. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome, Mr. Edgeworth," Lana replied with one of her rare smiles. She then handed Miles a gift basket with salty snacks, candy, tea bags and a Steel Samurai Plush. "Marry late Christmas. Apologies for not receiving this after your release."
"It's fine. That would've created a scandal. Thank you, Chief Prosecutor," the young prosecutor said, showing a rare smile of his own.
It was reasons like these he found it difficult to leave the Prosecutor's Office. It would be a betrayal of his colleagues. Sure, many of them were annoying and even were sticks in the mud, but they were good people. Even Winston Payne had his moments. He was the one to take all of Edgeworth's cases that involved his friends or loved ones. Payne was a lot of things, but understood the value of loyalty towards friends.
Miles Edgeworth couldn't stop smiling. His colleagues were always loyal to him. It was a bond all of them shared together as prosecutors. It was this very reason why non of them took his case. Technically, Lana was supposed to have taken the case, but not even the Chief Prosecutor herself could find it in herself to prosecute for her employee. They all knew that of all people, Miles Edgeworth was incapable of murder, let alone holding a gun. It was a surprise Manfred Von Karma took it,until they watched the court and found the truth about DL-6. There was no way that man was going to be respected by the prosecutors as long as he lived.
"Happy New Years," Lana said before leaving as Miles watched.
That moment, Miles made the decision, he was going to pay his father a visit. He'd do it for his boss and colleagues, who had done so much for him. It was hard to imagine, but after losing his father, Miles found his family among the prosecution's office. When he was lost or in trouble with blackmail, they supported him throughout everything. They even made this gift basket for him, while he was in jail. Miles Edgeworth maybe a man of logic and common sense, but he was still a man.
Miles made his way down the stairs, twelve floors, and into his car.It was pitch black outside. No surprise, being it was still winter.Sun set at 6:00 around this season and he was off work at 7:30 that evening. That was around the time the cleaning crew came in. He was already seeing them cleaning up the B Block parking lot with brooms and hoses.
The traffic was frustrating to say the least. Luckily, visiting hours only closed at 9 PM. Even with the traffic, Miles estimated that it should take him about an hour to get to the hospital. If longer, he could always make arrangements with the nurse. His aunt had made arrangements after hours before. Miles remembered spending the first few nights there at his father's bedside. They were dreadfully long days. He also remembered throwing huge fits whenever his aunt would drag him to the elevator.
Having found the hospital, Miles was successful in finding a parking place before signing in at the sign in desk. It was 8:34.
"Just so you know, visiting hours will be closed at 9:00," the counter lady warned.
"I understand. It shouldn't take too long, I promise," Miles replied.
"Alright, sir. We do include hotel stays, if you wish to stay overnight. If you want to arrange an overnight stay, talk to the Nurse."
"Will do. Thank you," Miles thanked the lady and took a bow.
Miles made his way down the hall, having received the room number his father was staying at. He didn't want to be in the room that long anyways, so it was likely he wouldn't stay anymore than 15 minutes. Also, because of how last minute the visitation was, it was unlikely Raymond Shields or other family would be there. Miles would be by himself.
Carefully opening the door, Miles took a deep breath and stepped inside the room. His father certainly grew older since the last he saw him. The heart monitor beeped, showing that he was still alive. The oxygen mask was on, so he was able to breathe. The other tubes were to help with eating and releasing waste. Even now, after all of these years, it was still hard for Miles to look at this man he called his father. It wasn't like he was going to wake up. If he was,he would've already woken up 15 years ago and yet...
"Perhaps I should've brought flowers,"Miles muttered, finding it easier to talk to himself to ease the nerves. He finally found the strength to walk to his father's bedside, after reassuring himself that his father wasn't going to wake up.
The bed seemed to have gotten smaller or perhaps Miles had grown since the last he was here. He remembered his aunt dragging him to this horrid place. Now, it just felt.... awkward. It was like going to a grave site. He knew the person was not physically there, just the body. Yet, Miles knew that his father's soul still rested here, but was asleep. He couldn't hear or talk to Miles. It was like he was..... dead.
"I don't know why I'm here," Miles said, crossing his arms, while staring at the shell of his father. "It's not like you could say anything to me like 'how are you?' or 'is everything okay?' as if you'd know." He continually heard the steady beeping from the heart monitor. He found a chair to sit down at before taking his father's hand into his own like in the movies. His hand was warm and wrinkly. What was he supposed to do? What was he supposed to say?
"I love you father and I miss you very much," Miles finally said, playing with his father's fingers a little. Sure, his father may not be able to talk to him or know he was there, but he still was in a strange sense. It gave him a strange sense of relief.
"M... Miles?" Miles heard a soft, hoarse voice, noticing those fingers twitch.
Looking back, he saw those gray eyes looking directly at him as Miles found himself choking. Emotions he never knew existed bubbled its way to the surface and his vision became incredibly blurry. His past, the events of DL-6, moving to live with his aunt, those nightmares, being taken under Manfred Von Karma in Germany, gaining his badge, all the major cases he took and finally the events on Christmas Eve. All of them came at once and it was enough to break the demon prosecutor. He covered his face in the bed sheets, while holding onto his father's hand for dear life.
"I'm so sorry, Father! Please forgive me! I promise I'll never do it again!" Miles wept as tears began falling.
Gregory was lost for words. He had just woken up to his son, who was a grown adult young man and crying at his bedside to forgive him for something. He was unsure of what to do, but luckily, it wasn't long before the nurse came by and had to escort the man away. Both men needed time to recover anyways. Miles found himself booking a hotel for the night and weeping bitter tears for the rest of the night.
A/N: I've been taking a break lately. For those of you wondering, I will get to No Escape very soon. I've been playing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and I thought I could start writing fan fictions on that one. It would be a bit easier to come up with stories that are more slice of life. Also, I've come to learn that many into Ace Attorney are also into Danganronpa. I don't think this will be a big deal. You can download the Ace Attorney games on mobile in the Apple Store, Google, Steam, DS and I think other devices. Now, if only Danganronpa can be available on mobile.
