A Debt to Repay
Summary: Nahyuta made a promise to Phoenix Wright that he would repay him for helping him during their previous trial and intended on doing so by going against Athena Cykes in a trial at the last minute. What Simon Blackquill believes to be despicable behavior may reveal to be a warning to him and Athena Cykes of what may befall Athena, if she were to defend a client in a country where Defense Attorneys receive the same fate as their clients, if proven Guilty.
It was exhausting, having finished his trial with Phoenix Wright before taking a plane to the United States to start his next one with Athena Cykes. Even as an International Prosecutor, Nahyuta normally would not exhaust himself like this by finishing a trial, then show up for the next one overseas that would start literally the next morning. Jet lag was not very fun, but Nahyuta owed a debt to Phoenix that he promised he'd paid. When Nahyuta made promises like that, he always paid his debts in full as quick as he could, no matter how much sleep he'd lack. The Chief Prosecutor of the District seemed alright with it as long as he did his job to find the truth.
Nahyuta would never admit it, but Phoenix Wright... he was someone the International Prosecutor greatly respected. Even before he went to Khura'in, Nahyuta studied on how this man was the victim of being falsely accused of forgery, yet still returned with the strength of a dragon. In many ways, he reminded Nahyuta of his father. It was no surprise Apollo chose him to mentor him. Even when facing him in court, Nahyuta could see this was a man that kept on fighting, even when the Grim Reaper was at his doorstep. It was also because of that act of courage that he was able to expose the flaws of the Defense Credibility Act. The moment Maya Fey was declared Not Guilty, Nahyuta knew there was no going back for that man. The least he could do was make the battle easier.
The door to the 3rd Floor Lobby burst open. It was enough to interrupt Nahyuta's meditation, but not startle him. He expected that Prosecutor to show up.
"The trial is over or is there something of utmost importance you need to speak with me about?" Nahyuta asked, opening his eyes, then turning his eyes towards the Twisted Samurai.
"Hmph," Simon replied, looking rather upset or angry. Nahyuta couldn't blame him for acting this way, though he would never admit to that.
"I may hold the ability to read someone's karma, but that doesn't make me a mind reader."
"Heh, sorry, but I'm not a believer in your mumbo jumbo," Simon smirked mockingly, rewarding him with Nahyuta's deadpan face. "Even so, no one needs any magic to see that your performance was distasteful, using Cyke-dono's trauma to toy with her."
"I believe there is a saying... I believe it's called pot calling the kettle black," Nahyuta replied, showing a rather mocking smile as Simon responded to that smile with a glare. He then returned back to his deadpan expression. "You use psychology against your opponents during your trials, do you not? I have my own way of Prosecuting a Trial, even if you may disagree or, dare I say, not believe in my beliefs. If Ms. Cykes cannot handle or defend her client under intense conditions or attacks, she will never grow or improve. I'm certain you would understand more than anyone else, Mr. Former Convict."
"Grrrr and you call yourself a holy man."
"I never said I was perfect. Besides, if you believe you should be most concerned about how I treat your sweet princess during trial, you're going to find her corpse in Khura'in along with her so called client. Mr. Wright has already caught himself up in the revolution in my country and his karma will involve Justice and Cykes."
Simon's eyes turned threateningly dark, staring into Nahyuta's eyes, practically into his soul. He could see that this unorthodox prosecutor wasn't making a threat, but a warning. In one swift move, his two fingers were directly pointed sharply at Nahyuta's neck like a blade of a sword. Nahyuta hardly flinched. He was used to being in life-threatening situations.
"Speak," Simon threatened, his voice darkened.
"I had finished my trial against Mr. Wright with the defendant being his friend Maya Fey. In my country, there is a law called the Defense Credibility Act. Anyone that helps or even defends a criminal is considered an abetter and will face the same punishment as the criminal. Mr. Wright defended Maya Fey under those conditions and, for a moment, was declared Guilty. I had attempted to provide him routes, so that he would not suffer the same fate as Ms. Fey, but the man was stubborn, even after she was declared Guilty. He kept on fighting. The Holy Mother was merciful and Mr. Wright was able to overturn the Guilty verdict on Maya Fey by a hair. He was lucky. At the same time, he also helped me uncover... some things and had saved someone I considered family to me. I promised to repay him and thus I shall, even if it means using unprecedented things. Ms. Cykes may not survive, once she arrives at Mr. Wright's aid, and she may not have a choice. At the moment, the Administer of Justice is planning on using his power to put Mr. Wright under his thumb. Like any student, she will go after her teacher."
"... so, that's what you were aiming for. You intended on scaring her from taking a client from your country, if it ever came to that," Simon realized, his voice calmed down and pulling his finger back.
"Phoenix Wright is reckless and acts upon emotion, but he is a true lawyer. In my country, a name carries weight and honor. In the case of Phoenix Wright, his offices carries this much weight. I wish to repay him by assuring that name is carried by someone, if the worst was to come."
"You don't expect Wright-dono to survive this?"
"I can't say. I can only read someone's karma based on their past choices, but that doesn't assure that those predictions are without flaw. I had been certain that his death was inevitable only two days ago, only to be proven wrong," Nahyuta admitted, his deadpan face now showing a hidden sorrow and fear. Simon's eyebrows rose. He could see those eyes were the eyes of a man that had witnessed too much blood being shed, innocent blood. Perhaps, he too, is a warrior of a different sword.
"I see. Why are you telling me this?"
"I have also read your karma. Based on your past with Ms. Cykes, if you knew her life would be in grave danger, you would make sure it was protected at all costs. That's another reason why I came. I can't protect her on my own. I have eyes watching me constantly. This is only an exception, because this request was so sudden. I needed an excuse to be here away from those watchful eyes," Nahyuta replied. "I intend on repaying Mr. Wright by protecting his name. Justice cannot be saved, being he has family in Khura'in, but Ms. Cykes has no connections there. If she is kept out of the trials, she can carry the name, if Wright and Justice do not survive the revolution."
"Hahahaha interesting. Perhaps I've misjudged you. Though, you could've just told me without a trial or making your conduct unprecedented."
"That was for Ms. Cykes. She's more reckless than Mr. Wright. Had I not conducted the trial the way I did, she would have likely not heeded to your warnings. As I said before, the Administer of Justice intends to threaten Mr. Wright. She'd be in much more trouble than he, unless placed under a worst possible scenario. If she knew there was a chance her trauma may paralyze her in court and result in joining with her client in the depths of hell, she'd be willing to not defend a client, so that she may not place them in danger."
"I still consider it distasteful," Simon said, showing his darkened eyes. There was a moment of pause before he continued. "Regardless, I will forgive you, for now. It's clear you have your own brand of iron bars and shackles that have forced you to see the cold, dark and grim reality that it is. It is difficult to not be distasteful and bitter in the clink."
"I wouldn't consider my situation the same as being in prison, but... I suppose you're not wrong either," Nahyuta replied, thinking about his situation more. Perhaps him and Simon weren't that much different. He smiled. "You have my thanks. I will leave the real killer in your hands this round. I have important duties to attend to at home."
"Get some sleep. I can see you have darker eyes than me. It's important to rest before battle."
"I will humbly accept your suggestion."
"Hmph," Simon responded, leaving the lobby.
Nahyuta sighed tiredly. Perhaps sleep is needed. He'll certainly need some before returning back to Khura'in.
A/N: There's a lot of people that don't like The Storyteller Turnabout, but I consider it to only error as a missed opportunity. I don't believe it was originally intended on being a trial that served no purpose to the overarching story. For those of you that have played Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice, you will notice that right after The Rite of the Turnabout, Nahyuta had made a promise to Phoenix to repay the debt he owed him. Then, at the beginning of The Storyteller Turnabout, literally the next day after making that promise to Phoenix, tells Athena he has a debt to repay someone. Then, for some reason, seems to treat Athena very cruelly and using her trauma against her to the point of forcing Simon Blackquill to join her in the Defense Assistant's Bench. Then, after that trial, Simon Blackquill threatens Phoenix to not allow Athena to assist Apollo or help defend Dhurke during his trial. You really believe that The Storyteller Turnabout isn't connected to the story? Personally, I think it was strongly connected, but was poorly explained. I believe Nahyuta used his trial against Athena as a warning of what may happen to her, if she was to defend a defendant in Khura'in, so that she would be protected. Considering Nahyuta's personality, it makes sense, but since we knew nothing about Nahyuta until Turnabout Revolution, his actions in The Storyteller Turnabout was taken out of context.
The issue with Nahyuta is that his character was dull until the very end. We didn't know his backstory or anything about him that made him interesting. With Edgeworth, his flamboyant personality and corrupt nature were what made him interesting before knowing his character. For Franziska, it was her relation to her father and violent nature that made her stand out, until we got to know her. For Godot, it was his coffee metaphors and mysterious connection to Phoenix that made him stand out, until we knew his character, which revealed itself piece by piece. With Klavier Gavin, it was his stand for the truth and connection with Kristoph Gavin and Phoenix Wright. For Simon Blackquill, it was his use of psychological warfare in court and the fact he was an inmate prosecutor. With Nahyuta, aside from being religious and a possible connection with Apollo, there's almost nothing about him that stands out. We don't know anything about his moral code, why he works for the Queen or why he believes the way he does. Since we don't have anything concrete for why Nahyuta is the way he is or follows his moral code, he feels like the typical Edgeworth prosecutor at best. It's sad, because after playing the game, I think he had great potential to be interesting before his backstory is revealed.
For now, I will have my first one shot with Nahyuta, but I would like to work on him a bit to make him stand out a bit more. I don't like how his character was executed in the game. He doesn't stand out and feels like a Miles Edgeworth knockoff. Considering his backstory, I consider Nahyuta a character that had been executed poorly.
