18 | REGULUS BLACK
Okay so I am not the best person
to be speaking about this as his character
is still one that I am trying delve more
into him and how to write him but let's
go for it !!
One of the major things to remember when it comes to writing for Regulus is that he would not have been a conventionally "good" person in most people's eyes. He was a Slytherin who held ALL of the pureblood family ideals. He was THE Black family member that was going to carry on the family name to the generation. While he would have been proper and well-mannered, he would have been that to other Slytherins. He would carry those prejudices and he would carry all of the stigmas he grew up with.
Regulus Black would have been a self made asshole pretty much. He had money, he knew of it and he would have power because of his last name. Power and popularity can get to peoples heads. So I've always seen him as a bit pretentious and sometimes a dick during his Hogwarts years. He wouldn't have been a big player, Sirius was a bit of one and he wanted nothing to do with his brother, he would have been more quiet and reserved (but still an asshole, I digress).
Regulus Black is a prime example of a character with an extreme character arc! I think once he's out of his brothers shadow he truly does start to see so many more problems going on. Sirius, as any older sibling does, protected Regulus from a lot of the things going on in the home. And when Sirius ran away, Regulus was left to see everything without his rose colored glasses. He was young when he joined Voldemort, meaning he didn't have much of a choice. It was something forced upon him, however he took that on with a sense of pride. Or he faked the pride well enough for no one else to doubt him.
I think Regulus would have been very conflicted in his last two years of Hogwarts, he didn't truly know if what he was fighting for was worth it. He saw his brother and his brothers friends have fun, but Regulus was too busy finding more followers or doing this or that for the dark lord.
That's why there's two different Regulus' that I think about really. There's the pre-death eater Regulus where he's a bit cocky and up pity, but then there's the post-death eater Regulus who doesn't like what he joined.
He discovers exactly what it is that Voldemort's doing and what he wants to do, and in many ways Regulus starts to detest the group that he is part of. That's what I think is most important when it comes to writing Regulus, he's conflicted between doing the morally right thing or doing the things his family wants him to do.
And we all know in the end that he chooses to do the morally right thing, so maybe all along he put up a front of being the perfect pureblooded kid to hide his disdain for their ways. That's one of the big things with this series, no one truly knows that much about Regulus meaning you can really write him as you want!
As always, you guys can leave your own tips & tricks for writing Regulus in the comments (bc truly I'm not that experienced and I don't think this helped too much 😭).
Also, don't be afraid to ask for some things you guys wants to see me cover in here !!
