Chapter Twenty-Eight

Marshall

I can't sleep.

I lay in my bed, looking up at the ceiling, not able to just close my eyes and go to sleep.

All of today's--er, I mean, yesterday's events are still swirling around and around in my head.

Right now it's one o'clock in the morning, an hour after the New Year and an hour after I left Bubblegum and Gumbutt's New Years Eve Gala. I've been home for an hour now, trying to fall asleep and failing.

Of course I can't sleep! I kissed FIONNA yesterday! FIONNA.

She and I KISSED. TWICE.

A shit ton of things had happened at the New Years Eve Gala.

For one, I finally confessed my undying love to Fionna, who surprisingly, confessed her undying love to me and actually felt the same way. She returns my feelings. She feels the same way I do.

For another, I told Ashley off in front of practically the entire town and told Fionna how in love with her I was while standing on top of a table.

Every few minutes I pinch myself to make sure I haven't been dreaming all this time and all that actually happened.

So far, nothing's happened, so I'm assuming all that actually happened in real life.

And, for yet another thing, I found out basically everything Fionna and I did at the New Years Eve Gala had all been an elaborate plan to get us together by none other than Finn.

Not without the help of Gumbutt and Marceline.

Apparently, Finn had been planning what would happen at the New Years Eve Gala for awhile now and just never told us.

Fionna and I had just found out right before the New Years Eve Gala had ended, along with our other friends. I'll admit, it's nice to know that Fionna and I weren't alone in being completely surprised and flabbergasted after finding out about Finn, Gumbutt, and Marceline's plan.

Even now, hours later, I am still surprised and flabbergasted. It seems I just can't push the memories of what happened yesterday out of my head.

Then again, Fionna and I kissed, immediately making yesterday probably the best day of my entire immortal life. Things like that aren't easily pushed out of one's mind.

This is going to be a long night.

-------------------------

And it certainly was.

I yawn and stretch my arms above my head before I get out of bed and made my way to my bathroom.

I check the time and I have woken up at nine in the morning, and I had fallen asleep around four or five AM, which means I barely got four hours of sleep. I really wish I had gotten more, because thanks to that I'm now exhausted.

Just because I'm a Vampire and Vampires don't need sleep like most people do, doesn't mean I don't get tired and wouldn't like to sleep when I get the chance.

After taking a shower and then afterwards brushing my hair and teeth, I change into my usual clothes and float downstairs for breakfast.

Once I am in the kitchen, I grab the quickest thing to make and eat, because I don't want to spend more time here than I have to.

I want to talk to Fionna. About yesterday.

About our kisses.

I feel my face heat up the very thought of us kissing. We had done it twice last night! Not to mention the subtle and joyful pecks we gave each other randomly throughout the rest of the New Years Eve Gala. Although they were amazing as well as the kisses, I didn't really count them because they were short and brief not like the two full-blown make out sessions Fionna and I had before them.

I feel my face become even hotter as I eat my small breakfast.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Marceline floating downstairs, her hair messed up in the I just woke up look.

After Marceline gets her breakfast like I did, Bubblegum comes walking down the stairs into the kitchen, her hair sporting the same look Marcy's does.

"Good morning, Marshall," Bubblegum hums out to me before she rounds the counter and gives Marceline a brief kiss on the lips.

I nod. "Morning, PB. Sleep much last night? I don't think you did considering the fact you had Marceline in the same bed with you," I say pervertedly, a smirk on my face.

After we all went home from the New Years Eve Gala, Bubblegum had decided to come home with us to spend the night with Marceline. Usually, when Bubblegum and Marceline want to spend the night together, they spend it at the Candy Kingdom because Bubblegum's bedroom is obviously way bigger than Marceline's. But, apparently, Bubblegum felt like spending the night here.

Bubblegum turns bright red, bringing back my attention. "W-We didn't do anything...!" she stutters, now obviously embarrassed.

Marceline wraps an arm around her girlfriend's shoulders and pulls her against herself playfully. "Now, Bonnibel, I wouldn't say that... We may have... fooled around a bit..." She gives me a wink.

I give her a face. "Stop there; I don't want any details because I don't feel like barfing up my breakfast or being permanently scarred for life," I say, holding my hand up to cut off my sister.

Marceline rolls her eyes. "Please. You're just jealous because you aren't getting laid," she says before her eyes widen and she smirks. "But, I have a feeling you might be very soon, considering what happened between you and Fionna last night~!"

I'm positive I turn even redder than I already was. "Sh-Shut it, Marceline...!" I snap, keeping my gaze locked on my breakfast.

But Marceline doesn't shut it. "Oh, come on, Marsh, we all know you dream about it every night..." she says, winking at me.

I definitely turn redder. "Glob, Marceline... Do you ever stop...?" I groan pitifully, hoping she will.

Marceline narrows her eyes at me. "Well, excuse you! My brother and my best friend, who both were madly in love with each other for two years, confessed their love for each other last night and kissed--twice. I'm allowed to be excited!" she says in a scolding voice. I roll my eyes as Bubblegum giggles along with my sister.

Right then I finish my breakfast. I stand up and head for the front door. "Bye, you idiots. I'm gonna... go take a walk. It's nice outside, today." There's no way I am going to tell them I am trying to find Fionna and talk to her after their insistent teasing.

"Be back soon!" Marceline calls after me as I grab my umbrella and open it. "You know, so I can annoy you some more! You're just so fun to piss off!"

I chuckle before I open the front door, the cool air of winter hitting me. "Right back at you, sis. Goodbye, now."

Marceline waves at me from the kitchen. "Bye-bye, baby bro~!" she sings.

I spin around. "You're literally only an hour older than me!" I retort. Marceline, since she was born a full hour before I was, thinks she can call me her baby brother. She's been doing it since we were little.

I start outside the open door.

"Later, baby bro!" Marceline calls once again.

I know she isn't going to let it go, so I roll my eyes again and just leave, closing the door behind myself.

Once I am outside our cave, I begin to fly all across the huge valley, searching for Fionna and hoping she is outside as well.

Apparently, she is.

Because, as I squint out into the distance, I see her walking toward Marceline and I's cave.

As I stare at her, I feel goosebumps all over my skin and I feel my face heat up once again. My palms become sweaty.

I'm never like this around anyone else. Back when Ashley and I were dating, I was never like this around her. Not even once.

Fionna is the only one that makes me feel like this.

She has no idea how crazy she makes me.

Building up as much courage as I can and swallowing my nerves, I call out to Fionna.

I keep calling her name until she hears me, spinning around to face me. I see her smile before she begins to make her way over to me.

Okay, Marshall, here she comes. The last time you saw her was at the New Years Eve Gala where you confessed your love to her and made out with her twice.

I feel my stomach erupt with millions of butterflies.

That was last night. Yesterday. Last year, technically. You haven't seen or talked to her since then. This will be your first time seeing and talking to her after what happened yesterday.

This is definitely going to be hella awkward.

I scoff. It's a new year, alright.

Fionna is running now, closing the distance between us.

I stand absolutely still, petrified.

Take a deep breath, Marshall.

I take in a gulp of air and slowly let it out.

Just be cool. Be yourself.

I plaster on my signature smirk.

Let's just hope she buys it.

Then Fionna is maybe two feet away from me. She smiles again and casually says, "Hey, Marsh!"

God, she doesn't look nervous at all! How is that possible? I'm a nervous wreck!

Fionna continues. "So... how'd you sleep?" she asks, shuffling around on her feet, waiting for my response.

She's right there! Speak, you fool!

I clear my throat and smile back at her. "Hey, Fi! I... Uh... I slept good...! You?" I say, trying to sound as normal as possible.

Fionna's cheeks tint pink and she clasps her hands together. "U-Um... Yeah... I slept... I slept great...! I definitely didn't think about last night...!" Then her eyes widen and her cheeks become red. "I-I mean I did think about last night... b-but not too much...! So, I didn't think too much about last night, but I thought about last night and... Uh... other stuff... things..." She winces.

I let out a sigh of relief, thankful she's just as nervous as I am.

That calms me down a bit. "So, about last night," I say, trying to stay calm. "Things happened."

Fionna nods. "Uh huh...," She turns redder. "We... Um... We said things... to each other..."

I feel my cheeks heat up yet again, the memories filling my head. "Y-Yeah..." I reply awkwardly.

"We... we did things..."

I feel like I might pass out. "Well, I mean, we just kissed, but... yeah, that's... that's right..."

We may have just kissed, but it definitely felt like more than that to me; kissing Fionna felt like waking up for the first time and thinking, Wow, so THIS is what real happiness is like.

I definitely want to kiss Fionna again. More than just twice in a lifetime.

Fionna blushes even harder, cutting off my train of thought with how adorable she looks when she blushes like that. "Y-Yeah, exactly..." she mumbles, obviously sensing the awkward tension.

"Um... I also asked you out last night..." I point out, now beginning to shuffle around like Fionna (doing nothing but standing there somehow makes it more awkward).

Fionna eyes me, seeming worried. "Do you regret doing that...?" she asks, hesitant.

I immediately shake my head. "Hell no. When I said I was in love with you and asked you out twice, I meant it and am definitely NOT taking any of it back."

Everything I say just seems to make Fionna blush deeper. That certainly makes me feel smug.

"Really?" Fionna asks.

I nod. "Of course. Speaking of, that's why I'm out here. I was hoping to find and talk to you about that," I explain.

Fionna's eyes widen. "That's actually why I came out here too--to find you and talk about that," She looks embarrassed. "When Gumball asked me out, he texted me the details afterwards. When Flame Prince asked me out, he flat out told me where we'd be going and what we'd be doing," Then she giggles. "When you asked me out--twice--you just asked me out. No details. Nothing. Just asked me out."

I must have a worried look on my face, because Fionna giggles again and shakes her head. "No, no! Don't worry! It's fine. I actually thought it was cute," she says, shuffling on her feet again.

I smile. "Well, for one, I didn't think you'd actually say yes and that I'd have to actually have plans," Fionna laughs and so do I. "But, since you did say yes, I was up all night thinking and planning the perfect date. I've got it all planned out. All you have to do is wait for me to pick you up at six. Tomorrow night," I say before I add, "Oh, and dress formal."

Fionna shrugs. "Alright. That's all?" She laughs again. "You won't even tell me where we're going?"

I shake my head, a playful smile on my face. "Nope. That'd just ruin the surprise. And what's the fun in that?" I say. Fionna rolls her eyes playfully.

"Whatever you say, Marshall."

I smile again. A genuinely happy smile. Because I know what's coming, and from what I'm definitely hoping and planning, it'll be amazing.

Tomorrow night will certainly be a night to remember.
