Chapter Thirty-Six

Fionna

Drip. Drip. Drip.

My vision swims momentarily as my eyes slowly open. Expecting to find myself in my bed at home because I was sleeping, it is a surprise to learn I am laying on a hard, cold floor.

I sit up slowly and take in my unfamiliar surroundings.

I'm in... some sort of room.

The walls in the room are made of stone, like the ground. And...

My eyes widen when I spot the several bars in front of me a couple of feet away.

Then I realize where I am.

I'm in a cell. As in, a JAIL CELL.

My eyes widen even more as I frantically go over everything I did the past couple of days.

I didn't do anything illegal! At least, I don't THINK I did...

As I keep going over what I did over the past couple of days, I can't think of anything that presents as against the law.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

My head spins around to see the source of the dripping noise--a leaky pipe a few feet outside the cell.

Well, THAT won't get annoying any time soon...

I keep looking around the room. Leaning against the wall outside the cell in a chair, is a sleeping guy. Actually, he looks more like a guard of some sort.

Okay, where the hell am I?!

I look across the cell and spot something very surprising.

More like someone, actually.

Lying on the ground a few feet from me is Breakfast Princess.

My eyes widen yet again before I make my way over to her.

Then, all the memories come flooding back.

Breakfast Princess, for some odd reason, had come to find me. She found me in the valley and we talked for a minute or two until... until Ashley showed up out of nowhere and...

And she kidnapped us.

I feel a shiver of terror go down my spine at the very thought and realization.

Ashley kidnapped Breakfast Princess and I right in the middle of the valley, some ways from Marshall and Marceline's cave and the tree house; there's no way anyone saw what happened. No one could've seen, considering how far out we were in the valley when it happened!

No one has any idea where we are. As far as Marshall knows, I'm still getting his present for him. Bubblegum and Marceline are no better—all they know is I'm on my way to the tree house!

But... but they would start to wonder why I never came back, right? They'd wonder why I was taking so long and would eventually go to check on me only to find I would be missing, then they'd panic and call the police to send a search party or something. Or they'd try to come find me themselves. Or both.

Either way, my friends and family will eventually find out I'm missing and will try their absolute best to find me. I know it for sure.

I gently shake BP, hoping and praying she's alive and that I don't wake the guard.

After a few seconds of gently shaking her and whispering her name, to my immediate relief, she eventually stirs and her eyes slowly flutter open.

Oh thank glob she's alive! I can breathe again...!

I let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Breakfast Princess's eyes widen slightly at the sight of me looming over her. "Fionna...?" she whispers, surprised. Then, she sits up and rubs her eyes. "What's going on...?" She looks around and, upon realizing we are in a cell, begins looking freaked out. "Where are we?!"

I quickly shush her. "Shh! BP, you have to be quiet!" I whisper shout as I nod my head at the guard outside our cell, thankfully still snoozing away.

Breakfast Princess lowers her voice, but still sounds freaked out, not that I blame her. "Why the hell are we in a jail cell?! And why are we being guarded?! I didn't do anything illegal, and I don't think you, one of the heroes of Ooo, did either!" she whisper shouts.

I shrug my shoulders. "I have no idea why we're here either. All I remember is Ashley knocking us out. She took us here for whatever reason," I tell BP.

Breakfast Princess groans quietly and runs a hand down her face. "Ugh! I should have stopped being her friend a long time ago!" she spits, and I can tell she means it.

Does that mean Breakfast Princess dumped Ashley as her friend? That would explain what Ashley said earlier about Breakfast Princess deciding she was "all high and mighty and better than her".

"Ashley probably kidnapped us because of what happened at the Year News Eve Gala," I say. "You weren't there, but Ashley got pissed and said she would 'make us all pay'... So, I guess this is how she's going to do it."

BP shakes her head, her eyes narrowed. "I knew it; that bitch is crazy," she mutters.

"Aw... You say that like it's a bad thing."

Breakfast Princess and I's heads immediately whip around at the sound of the sickeningly familiar voice.

Ashley stands outside our cell, maybe two feet from it. The guard outside the cell is now awake, seeming alert at Ashley's presence.

Ashley watches BP and I like a cat would watch a mouse.

I swallow. Breakfast Princess looks on the verge of fainting.

Ashley paces slowly outside our cell, a smirk on her face, clearly enjoying the state we're in.

I glare at her.

Her smirk stays on her face. "It's about time you two woke up. I was considering having one of my guards stab you a little to rouse you, and trust me, the thought was tempting."

I hear BP gulp from behind me.

"Why the hell are we here, Ashley?" I question hotly, cutting straight to the chase.

"Why, you're here so I can end you, of course," Ashley hums, as if what she just said was completely normal.

I swear I can hear Breakfast Princess's heart beating rapidly as she's beginning to hyperventilate.

I can't blame her, of course; the way Ashley said end you sent terrified chills up my spine, but I continue to glare Ashley down, determined not to show her any weakness or fear.

"I bet you're wondering why I'd want to end you, like the naive scum you are," Ashley sniffs before her eyes narrow at us, but I have a feeling it's mostly at me. "Fionna the Human, I'm going to make you suffer for stealing the one thing that mattered to me most--my boyfriend Marshall. You took him from me! But now, you're going to pay."

I cock my head to the side. "You mean your ex-boyfriend Marshall. You two broke up a long time ago. You never really cared about him."

Ashley's eyes narrow even more. "Of course I cared about Marshall! He was my favorite out of all my boyfriends! He was special," she hisses at me.

I raise an eyebrow. "Oh really? Because it seems to me like you were pretty sure that he wasn't special to you after you cheated on him with all those other guys. And don't pretend you didn't; Marshall and Marceline told me all about it. So I'm guessing Marshall was only as 'special' as all the guys you fooled around with during your relationship, huh? Wow, he must've felt real special...!" I say the last sentence laced with sarcasm.

Suddenly Ashley is right in front of our cell and slamming her hands against the bars intimidatingly.

Breakfast Princess flinches and I try my best not to.

"I loved him and he loved me! In fact, he still loves me! He just doesn't realize it yet! He's only with you to cope with not being able to be with me! He's confused! But soon, he'll come to his senses," Ashley stops glaring at us as she smirks again. "Especially after he finds out you're dead."

BP suddenly scoots forward a bit, which surprises me. She locks eyes with Ashley. "Ashley, you've gone too far. Kidnapping us is going way too far. I know you're in love with Marshall and have been for a very long time, but he's not in love with you. He may have been a long time ago, but he isn't anymore because he has Fionna now. You need to accept that. You shouldn't have cheated on him, but the past can't be changed. You need to move on. It's obvious you have an unhealthy obsession with Marshall, considering the fact that when we were still friends, he was literally all you talked about. Trust me, I get what it's like to be obsessed with a guy, but this," She gestures all around us, "is taking it to a whole other level. This is going too far, and this certainly won't make Marshall love you again. In fact, it'll do the exact opposite. You need to let us go."

My eyes widen at BP's sudden stroke of bravery. In a weird sort of way, I'm actually kind of proud of her for standing up to Ashley.

Ashley cackles at Breakfast Princess like what she just said was a hilarious joke. Then, her eyes narrow once again. "If you seriously think I'm going to let you two go, you're seriously deluded. You two are my only chance of luring Marshall here into my loving arms. I'm NOT giving up that chance," she says before she tosses her hair over one shoulder, eyeing us. "Marshall is mine, and he'll realize that after Fionna here is dead. Of course, BP, you'll follow right after her; I can't risk having a witness after all! Plus, you deserve to suffer after what you said to me."

I glance over at Breakfast Princess, wondering what the hell she said to make Ashley this pissed at her.

Then BP's eyes meet mine for a split second before they are back on Ashley, looking terrified again. I bet mine look the same.

"Of course, I can't kill you right this second; I want to have some fun with you first." Although Ashley is speaking to both of us, her eyes are glued to me as she says it.

I don't know what she means by fun, and I don't want to know.

Suddenly, Ashley's eyes narrow again as she keeps staring at me. "Why are you wearing his shirt?" she questions, dangerously calm.

What?

I give her a look that says I have no idea what she means by that.

Her eyes narrow even more into a full-on glare. "Why the hell are you wearing that shirt?! I know that's one of Marshall's shirts! Don't try to claim it's not, I know it is! So why the hell are you wearing it?!" she spits, now obviously pissed off.

Breakfast Princess looks at me.

I swallow before I glare Ashley down and reply to her outburst.

"Because it's the shirt he told me I could have after we had sex."

Out of the corner of my eye, I see BP's eyes widen.

If Ashley was pissed before, it's nothing compared to what she is now.

Ashley eyes are practically shooting daggers at me, and I know that if looks could kill I would already be dead several times over.

"You know what?" she says, seething yet at the same time dangerously calm. "Let's start having fun right now."

Then Breakfast Princess gives me a look that says Well, you fucked up.

Suddenly, Ashley is holding a pair of keys in her hand and uses them to open the cell door. Now Ashley is inside our cell, grabbing me by my neck roughly before she tosses me out of the cell like I was nothing.

I hit the stone wall hard. I squint my eyes shut and grunt in pain.

I hear the cell door close and BP gasp. "Stop it! Leave her alone!" She sounds even more terrified.

Just as I'm beginning to wonder why Breakfast Princess sounds so worried about me, my stomach suddenly explodes with pain as I feel Ashley kick me hard.

It's like she has super strength; I slide halfway across the room.

I open my eyes and look up to see Breakfast Princess cry out before Ashley lifts her hand and slaps me hard across the face.

I go down again as I feel a stinging sensation on my cheek where Ashley had slapped me.

That is certainly going to leave a mark.

Suddenly, Ashley grabs me roughly by the hair and forces my head to snap up. I wince in pain again as my eyes meet hers.

"How dare you touch my Marshall?!" Ashley hisses at me. She grabs my hair harder.

"He is not yours," I breath out, my eyes still looking right into hers. "He stopped being yours the moment you cheated on him. He deserves better than that--he deserves to have someone he can trust. And I know for a fact that he can trust me. It's not only the cheating either; you made his whole relationship with you a living hell. You treated him badly, you made him do everything you said, you basically controlled everything he did. That's NOT a relationship, at least that's not how a relationship should be," I say, remembering everything Marshall and Marceline told me about Marshall's unhealthy past relationship with Ashley.

Ashley growls in anger at me before she lets go of my hair and kicks me across the room again. I shout again in pain as I slide across the floor into another wall.

"Stop it, Ashley!" Breakfast Princess screams, tears beginning to form in her eyes. "Stop it!"

Ashley ignores her cries as she continues to toss me across the room. I bite my lip to try and distract myself from the pain. I end up biting my lip until it draws blood.

Suddenly, Ashley stops kicking me around and I hear her suck in a breath. I slowly and cautiously look up at her.

Ashley's eyes are widened as she just stares at me.

She suddenly reaches down and roughly grabs part of my shirt and yanks it down. "What is that?!" she demands.

I stay silent because I immediately know what she is talking about.

The Vampire's Mark that's on my shoulder blade.

Marshall's Mark, to be exact.

"Is that... a Vampire's Mark?!" Ashley spits loudly, causing me to flinch slightly. "It is a Vampire's Mark! Is this... is this Marshall's Mark?!"

Oh boy.

I stay absolutely silent, not so much as uttering a word.

Breakfast Princess goes silent as well, just watching us through the bars of the cell.

Knowing that Marshall marked me as his forever mate definitely won't make Ashley any less pissed off.

Ashley's eyes become even more angry and terrifying, if that's even possible. "H-He marked you?!" she exclaims, seething even more. "He marked you, the pathetic human girl, and not me?! How is that even possible?! There's NO WAY that's possible! He's with you for maybe a month and he immediately marks you?! I don't get it! It doesn't make any sense whatsoever!"

Yep, she definitely isn't any less pissed off.

"It makes perfect sense to me," I suddenly find myself saying. "A Vampire marks the person that they're meant to be with forever because that person is their mate. It's a feeling, Marshall told me, a feeling that feels right. He didn't get that feeling when he was dating you because he wasn't supposed to. You two weren't meant to be, especially considering how you treated him. From what I understand, a Vampire's Mark is a symbol of undying love towards a mate, and mates are supposed to treat each other with love and respect, NOT as objects that belong to anyone. And from what Marshall and Marceline told me, Marshall was only ever an object to you. So, I guess Marshall never marked you because, deep down, he knew something was wrong with your relationship."

It is silent for a moment.

Ashley just stares at me, her eyes still narrowed coldly.

Breakfast Princess is still watching us from inside the cell, completely silent.

Everything is silent. Not a sound is heard.

And the silence continues until a loud sound echoes through the room as Ashley slaps me once again.
