Chapter Fifty-One
•Fionna•
"Woo-hoo!" Marshall and Finn cheer at the same time as we all run outside of the school right after the last bell of the day rings.
Summer vacation has officially began.
The three days after Dominick's departure were the last days of school before summer vacation started, and they went by fairly quickly. Even before then, the last school week went by quickly mainly because we got one day off for the Card Wars Tournament, which we just had three days ago.
And, just like that, before any of us knew it, school was out and it was time to enjoy summer.
Not only that, but we're even more hyped for summer than usual because this year was our last year attending Conquest High--our last year of high school. Now, it's time to get started with our adult lives.
But first, before we have to start being all responsible, we have almost three whole months to enjoy ourselves and fool around like teenagers, and I for one can't wait to get started on that.
"FREEDOM!" Finn screams happily as we all run across the school's grounds.
"Okay, calm down, bud," I say, giving my twin brother a nudge as we run.
Finn stops running, and we all stop with him. "Don't you get what this means, Fi? No more school for the rest of our lives. We don't have to come back here in three months, because there's no more school to come back to! We're free! I've been waiting for this moment since we started kindergarten!" he says, way hyped.
I snort. "Please; all we did in kindergarten was play house and take naps," I point out.
"Still," Finn says, nearly breathless from running around like a maniac. "No more school!"
"FREEDOM!" Marshall repeats what Finn said, and just like that we're running again.
We run all the way off school grounds and all the way to the tree house. Once we make it, we open the door and rush inside.
"It's officially summer!" Marceline announces, pumping her fist in the air excitedly.
"Finally," Flame Princess says with a relieved groan.
"Definitely; a vacation for all of us is long overdue," Bubblegum says in agreement.
"Most certainly," Gumball agrees with his sister.
As my friends chat in agreement about finally having our long overdue vacation, Marshall suddenly drops down on the couch and grabs the remote that was on the coffee table next to him. He smiles. "So, who wants to watch a movie? Popcorn's on Finn." He gives my twin a look which means Finn is going to be the one making the popcorn because my lovely boyfriend is too lazy to do it himself.
Finn groans and rolls his eyes. "Of course it is," he says with a sigh, shaking his head before he smiles at Marshall. "Of course."
——————————
We spent the afternoon and the rest of the day just hanging out and watching movies as we began to enjoy summer.
When the day was over, we all tired ourselves out and were ready to call it a night.
We all ended up each going to spend the night with our significant others; Marceline heading to the Candy Kingdom with Bubblegum, Cake and Jake inviting Lady R and Lord M to the tree fort, and Finn having Flame Princess sleep with him in his room.
When they discussed it, Flame Princess had given Finn a serious look, mainly because they have never spent the night together before. "Finn, I promise I will not burn anything in your room. As everyone has probably noticed, I'm better at controlling my flames and am still getting better. However, I think, just for extra protection, it'd be wise for me to perform the flame shield chant."
Finn's eyes had widened. "You know it now? You finally were able to learn it?" he asked her, amazed.
The flame shield chant is a chant flame people do whenever they want to protect someone or something from their flames. They simply say the words of the chant and place their hand over the person or thing they want to shield, and just like that it happens. I remember all the times FP would get frustrated with herself because it's incredibly hard to learn and she had given up several times before.
Flame Princess had looked smug, proud of herself as she should be. "Yes, finally. It certainly took forever, but I finally was able to learn it. Now, we can touch and do whatever we want without me having to control my flames!" she said happily.
I smiled warmly. Any advancement in physical interaction in Finn and Flame Princess's relationship is a big deal, considering the fact that not too long ago FP couldn't touch anything without it burning to the ground and turning into nothing but a pile of ashes.
After Finn and Flame Princess gushed over the accomplishment, they headed up to bed.
As for Gumball and Breakfast Princess, since they don't have significant others, they had just wished us all goodnight before heading to their kingdoms. However, right before they left, I thought I caught them exchanging a slight look and smiling at each other.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say there's something going on between those two.
Hm... I'll have to look into that more.
I shift a little and roll over in bed next to Marshall. I ended up going to his and Marcy's cave to spend the night. Since Marceline is spending the night at the Candy Kingdom with Bubblegum, we have the house all to ourselves.
Next to me, Marshall yawns and rolls over as well. As he faces me, he smiles. "I'm so glad school is over and done with forever. Now we get to move on with our lives and... do whatever it is we want to do," he says before he lets out a yawn.
I smile sleepily back at him, feeling just as tired as he is. "Yeah. I'm glad too." I can't help the giant yawn that slips from my mouth as I rub my eyes. "I'm tired..."
Marshall snorts. "I can tell," he says with an amused look on his face. "I'm pretty sure the Nightosphere heard that yawn."
I lightly punch him in the shoulder as he continues to laugh. "Jerk," I say before I roll over, breaking eye contact.
"Come on, Fi, I'm sorry," Marshall says in a small voice, and I giggle. "Forgive me for offending you so?"
I roll back over to face him, giving him an amused smile. "I suppose," I say in a high-and-mighty tone of voice before I lean in and give him a kiss on the cheek. "Good night, Marshall."
Marshall snuggles against me and wraps an arm around my waist. "Good night, Fionna," he says with one final yawn. That is the last thing I hear right before I close my eyes and sleep claims me.
•Flame Prince•
They think they're untouchable. Invincible.
They think they can keep me from what I want.
They think there are no consequences for crossing me.
They think it's all over; that I've backed off for good.
They're wrong. Dead wrong.
They've underestimated and ridiculed me for the last time.
I stomp angrily across the valley, trying my best to control my temper and not burn the grasslands to the ground. It's dark, but being myself, I am my own light source.
I clench my fists as I near my destination. For years, Marshall Lee Abadeer and his stupid friends have been a thorn in my side. Not only because they're insufferably annoying, but also because they've kept me from what's truly mine—they've kept me from Fionna.
Ever since the first time I laid my eyes on her, she was mine and I knew I had to have her. Anything it took, she had to be mine. And she was, for awhile, until I got bored of her and dumped her over a text message in order to get what I wanted from someone who would give it to me.
But then I had quickly realized my mistake and that I couldn't live without Fionna. I tried to tell myself I didn't need her and was bored of her, but it didn't help at all, rather it only emphasized how much I needed to have her.
And after she gave me a second chance and we got back together, I had found myself getting bored once again, but this time I was smart; I knew I had to keep Fionna, but that didn't mean I still couldn't find other ways to entertain myself.
Fionna was stubborn and wouldn't give me what I wanted when I wanted it (to this day I still don't see why she wouldn't, considering the fact that I long ago mastered the flame shield chant and therefore could prevent the possibility that she could get hurt), so I had to seek it elsewhere; it was the reason I dumped her over that text in the first place. Now, some would call that cheating, but I'd call it exploring other options. I loved Fionna, of course, and I still do, but she wasn't cooperating so I once again had to find someone who would.
Of course, being the drama queen she is, Fionna freaked when she found out (I have a feeling my sorry excuse for a sister tipped her off) and this time she dumped me.
I had told her she was making a mistake and that I wanted her and would always want her and that she was mine, but she didn't listen and dumped me anyway. She said I couldn't have her.
Well, I don't like being told I can't have something, so I fixed that when I convinced her to give me another chance.
Unfortunately, when Fionna continued to deny me what I wanted from her, I had to continue getting it elsewhere and she found out yet again and dumped me yet again. I've tried telling her that we belong together and that she's still making a big mistake, but she's ignored me and shunned me, refusing to see reason and that she belongs to me.
But, that doesn't matter; she will soon see the error in her ways after what I've got planned.
Finally, I arrive at my desired destination; the big oak tree outside and behind Conquest High, near the courtyard, the very tree Fionna and her friends sat under for lunch and studying. At school, this had been their local hangout.
I lean against the tree, careful to control my flames and not burn it because setting a giant oak tree on fire would definitely draw unwanted attention, and I wait for the person I'm supposed to meet.
At first I had been reluctant to work with her, but in the end she convinced me with the very simple statement of, "I have a way that can get us both what we want." After that, I didn't need much more convincing.
If working with her would get me what I want, then I'd do exactly that, even considering the company she chooses to keep, no matter how much I hate who she wants to interact with.
We have a deal, and if I want to get what I want out of it, I have to stick to it.
I am just starting to get impatient when I hear a soft snap right behind me. I instantly turn and face my partner.
She smiles at me, and I feel disdain in my being seeing that smile. I hate her for my own reasons, but she's the only person who I can possibly work with to get what I want, so I put up with her for now. She continues to smile that sickeningly sweet smile. "Well. I see you decided to show up."
I narrow my eyes at her, already irritated with her being in my presence. "Of course I did. Why wouldn't I have?" I reply evenly.
She just keeps on smiling. "I thought you might chicken out. You seem like the type," she drawls.
I clench my fists. Oh, how I hate you, Ashley, but you're my one chance at getting what I want.
I glower at the witch. "Cut the crap, Ashley. You called me here for a reason but never told me why. What's next? What are we supposed to do next if we're going to achieve what you're saying?"
Ashley leans forward, a satisfied smirk on her face. "Remember that thing I told you about, that we needed it if we wanted what we want to achieve to work?" she asks me.
I nod, immediately knowing what she's referring to. She'd told me about it tons of times since we started working together, and if I'm being honest it sounds risky, but I'll do whatever it takes to get what I want--to have Fionna all to myself again, and to have everything and everyone groveling at my feet.
If Ashley's plan works, I'll have everything I've ever wanted and more. I'll have my revenge against Marshall and his excuses for friends and Fionna will be my side prize. Originally, I was only ever planning on getting her, but Ashley's proposal is too promising to ignore; if things go as planned, I'll have the world and everyone in it at my fingertips.
Ashley continues, interrupting my blissful fantasy. "Well, that thing we need," she says, smiling, "I know where it is. I overheard some of Marshall's stupid friends talking about it and from their conversation I was able to gather some important information, specifically where it is."
I sigh in relief. Finally. It's about time!
"Where is it?" I ask her eagerly. The sooner we get ahold of it, the sooner I can have everything I've ever wanted.
Ashley smirks again, leaning in even farther, not disturbed by my flames in the least, her lips near my ear. Then she whispers the location.
I smile as she whispers, listening carefully and intently. I feel instant excitement and restlessness course through my entire being as she tells me the location. The location of something I thought had been destroyed until Ashley proved otherwise. The location of the key that holds unimaginable power.
The location of the infamous Enchiridion.
——————————
"Right... here," I say to myself, panting from the long distance I had to go. "Finally."
After disclosing the location of the Enchiridion, Ashley gave me one simple but important job: take it.
Now, as I stand on top of the spot it's supposed to be buried in, I feel a triumphant wave of success wash over me. After I get this book to Ashley, I'll have my revenge and Fionna as well.
Although, at the very same time, I also feel nervous; the Enchiridion is an incredibly powerful and ancient book. It's like a ticking time bomb, which is probably why Fionna and her friends hid it away underground where they thought no one would ever come snooping around.
And they never once thought it a possibility that I might find it.
I snicker. This is too perfect. They're practically handing me the key to untold power!
I poise my hands over the spot it's buried in. Time to meet my destiny. Without a second thought, flames shoot out of my hands and begin precisely burning the ground.
It takes about a minute for the hiding place to give away and collapse. Huh. It seems they buried it farther down than I thought.
No matter.
I jump into the the charred hole I have created in the ground. Just as I expected, the hole extends into a large hollowed out area a few feet under the ground, which is probably why it took awhile to burn through here.
I walk across the area, using a ball of fire in my hand to light the way. Soon, I come across exactly what I was looking for.
It's just as glorious as I imagined it to be, being because I'd never actually seen it in real person.
The Enchiridion.
I approach and notice it's sitting on top of a pedestal which only makes it look even more important and powerful.
I feel a smile take over my entire face as I reach out, extremely careful not to burn it, and grab the ancient book. The very second I touch it, I feel a power unlike any other course through me.
My smile grows wider, and right then I know I'll do absolutely anything to keep feeling what I'm feeling right now.
I gently pick up the Enchiridion and look it over, half-expecting for a bunch of booby traps to be set off out of nowhere like in the movies, but luckily nothing happens.
I chuckle. Too easy.
I stare down at the powerful book in my hands, knowing that with it, anything I want can be accomplished.
Then I close my eyes and imagine what my life will soon be like, all thanks to this book. A pleasant shiver races down my spine at everything I will soon have as one thought instantly runs through my mind. I smile even wider.
At last.
