Chapter Eleven
•Fionna•
After what seems like forever of navigating our new schedules and avoiding Breakfast Princess and Ashley, it is a relief when lunch finally starts.
We all make our way outside the back of the school and to the old oak tree we love sitting under--the oak tree we always sit under when we have lunch, our free period, or are studying.
"So... how's everyone's first day going?" I ask.
Marceline, Finn, and Marshall all look at me. "Shitty," they say together.
I sigh before I nod. "Yeah, who am I kidding? Mine too."
"Well, it is high school, so the first day is always the shittiest; it should get better...!" Marceline says.
"Yeah," Marshall scoffs, "call me when that happens."
"Well, unfortunately I have two classes with Breakfast Princess and she made it a point to basically call me a fat loser, so..." I just shrug. I make it a point where I typically ignore everything that comes out of Breakfast Princess's mouth.
Marceline puts a hand on my shoulder. "You know, Fi, I can cut a bitch if you want me to," she says with a reassuring smile. "Just say the word."
I chuckle before I shrug her hand off. "I'm fine, Marcy, but thanks," I say.
"Are you sure? 'Cause I'd be more than delighted to beat the crap outta that prissy piece of toast and bacon," Marshall says.
"You can't do that; guys can't hit girls. Remember? It's an unspoken rule," Finn points out.
Marshall frowns. "Oh. Right," he says. "Although, I can't count how many times I wanted to slap Ashley senseless today. I have her in three of my classes and she practically kept throwing herself at me and telling me I should stop hanging out with 'losers like you guys'."
A sour taste forms in the back of my mouth when Marshall says Ashley's name; whenever Ashley is brought up, all I want to do is punch something.
The way she treated Marshall when they were together wasn't right and she didn't deserve him at all.
That and the fact that I hate it when she flirts with him--the very thought makes me want to vomit.
"Just ignore her, dude. She's just jelly that you have awesome friends and all she has are a bunch of princess-clones whose IQs probably aren't even above third grade level yet," Finn says as he takes a bite out of his apple.
"Thanks, man," Marshall eyes Finn's apple. "Hey, can I see that for a sec?"
He takes it out of Finn's hand before he proceeds to suck the red out of it.
Then he hands it back to Finn with a smile. "Thanks, dude. I needed that; I forgot my lunch money."
Finn stares at his now gray apple before he tosses it over his shoulder. "Well I don't want it now..." he mumbles.
"Hey, guys!"
We all look up to see Bubblegum and Gumball standing in front of us with their lunch trays.
I immediately smile. "Hi! I'm so glad you guys are going to school with us!"
"How come you guys aren't in the cafeteria? We're really the only ones that eat outside," Marshall says.
Gumball sighs. "Because, apparently, titles and crowns don't matter in high school, so we got booted from every table by every clique--even the unpopular ones," he grumbles.
Bubblegum just gives a nervous smile before she shrugs. "Do you mind if we sit with you?" she asks.
I scoot over a bit before I pat the spot next to me. "Of course, you can! There's plenty of room," I say.
Bubblegum and Gumball give me friendly smiles before they happily sit down with their lunches.
At first it's awkward having Marshall and Gumball in the same setting without either of them making any snide comments or Marshall calling Gumball any names, but eventually we all drift into normal conversation and the awkwardness slowly melts away.
Somehow, the topic of conversation drifts on to the subject of our love lives.
I cringed when the topic was first brought up, mainly because there's really only one guy I want involved in my love life, a guy I know I can never have.
"So, Finn, tell us--how are things with Flame Princess going?" Gumball asks my brother.
Finn immediately smiles smugly. "Great, thanks for asking, PG. In fact, I have a date with her tomorrow night."
My eyes widen as I gasp. "Really? You have a date with Flame Princess and you didn't tell me? Oh my glob, Finn, that's amazing!" I say. I never thought in a million years Finn would actually man up and ask her out.
"Yeah," Marceline says, biting into a french fry, "good work. It seems all your years of obvious flirting have finally paid off...!"
Marshall chuckles.
Finn rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, laugh all you want...! But, the point is I did it. So HA."
"So," Bubblegum suddenly says. "Marceline. How's your love life? You... seeing anyone lately?"
Marceline shakes her head. "No. I'm a free agent... for now," She shoots Bubblegum a smirk. "Why, Bonnibel? You jealous?"
Everyone else is immediately silenced. Marceline had asked the question as if she were asking Bubblegum to barrow a pencil or something.
Bubblegum immediately freezes before her cheeks are tinted the slightest bit of red. "What? Why would I be jealous? I'm not. Not at all. Nope," she says. "Besides, we broke up, remember? So why would I care?"
Marceline nods. "Good point since, after all, it was you who dumped me... So, yeah, why would you care, Bonnibel?" she hums. Bubblegum's eyes widen before she shoots Marcy heated look.
Marshall gives me a look. This just got awkward, it reads.
I slowly nod in agreement. Yeah.
Finn coughs. "So... Um... Yeah... I'm thirsty. Is anyone else thirsty?" He stands up. "I'm gonna go and get some water. Who's with me?"
We all immediately seize the opportunity to get away from the awkwardness and possible nuclear explosion; whenever those two have a fight, it's NOT PRETTY...
"No, guys, it's fine. We're just having a discussion, that's all. No need to run off and flee," Marceline pats the grass. "Sit back down."
Finn shakes his head. "Naw, I'm still thirsty..."
Marshall, Gumball, and I all nod. "Me too!" we say at once. We all look at each other.
One thing's for sure--if Bubblegum and Marceline are gearing up to fight, you don't stick around unless you have a death wish and wanna get dragged into it.
That, and it's incredibly awkward and uncomfortable to have to take sides afterwards.
So, yeah, no thank you.
Whenever they do fight, Marceline tries to sugarcoat it by calling their fights "friendly rivalries between exes".
Psshh, like such a thing exists.
We've all urged them more than once to get the hell over whatever is bothering them and get the hell back together, but so far it doesn't seem to be working.
Bubblegum shrugs. "If you insist."
We do.
So we all immediately walk to the nearest outdoor water fountain.
We avoid looking at Bubblegum and Marceline for a good ten seconds before we all risk a glance at them.
They aren't shouting or even glaring at each other, but their voices are lowered and they are just talking.
"Huh. Lucky for us, we somehow managed to narrowly avoid World War III," Finn lamely pumps a fist in the air. "Boo-yah."
-------------------------
The rest of the day goes on okay, I guess.
Well, okay until after seventh period on our way out of the building—we run into Breakfast Princess and Ashley.
Upon seeing them, we all immediately try to head for the opposite direction, but no such luck; they catch up to us.
Breakfast Princess shoots me a fake smile. "Well, would you look who it is? It's the little, chubby, lame human. I can't believe they actually let animals in here..."
Ashley smirks. "Oh, believe it. I mean, they let them in here," she says before she nods her head at Bubblegum and Marceline. "The disgusting girl-on-girl enthusiasts. Ugh, your kind disgusts me."
Breakfast Princess smirks. "Oh my glob, I couldn't have said it better myself," she titters.
Must resist the urge to beat them senseless...!
I grit my teeth.
Marceline glares. So do the boys. Bubblegum just shies away.
"We're not even together anymore... Just leave us alone..." she mutters.
Marceline rolls her eyes. "And this is why--you've always been ashamed of dating me."
Bubblegum's jaw drops, and before she gets to protest, she is interrupted.
"As you should be. I swear, nothing disgusts me more than looking at you," Ashley sneers.
Finn blinks. "Oh really? I find that really hard to believe, considering the fact that you two look in the mirror every day...," He shrugs. "But, hey, that's just me."
I stifle a laugh. Marshall smirks. I can tell even Gumball is trying not to laugh.
Breakfast Princess and Ashley immediately shoot him ice-cold glares.
I nod at my brother's comment. "Exactly what he said. And, if you ever speak to my friends like that again, I just might have to test how far my fist can go into your faces," I snap. "Now, as much as we'd love to stay here and watch you girls tend to your fragile egos, it's getting late and we've gotta go," I give them a fake smile and wave. "See ya' later, Barbies! Say hi to Ken for me!"
As we walk away with our heads held high, I can tell without even looking back that BP and Ashley are fuming.
OH DEAR GOD WHAT JUST HAPPENED.
DID I JUST SAY THOSE THINGS TO BP AND ASHLEY?! OR DID I IMAGINE IT?!
I feel like I want to faint.
Marshall suddenly clasps a hand on my shoulder. "Okay, that was awesome, and I've seen a lot of shit over the time span of a thousand years."
"Yeah, you put them in their place!" Gumball says, obviously surprised. "I've never seen you stand up to them before."
Then, hearing them say that, I smile, giddy with newfound excitement. "I know...! I've never done it before! And now that I have, it felt kinda great," I say.
Finn nods. "True that! I can't count how many times I've wanted to do that since Freshman year!" he says, smiling wide.
"That was SICK, dudes!" Marshall says before he turns to me. "Seriously, Fi, seeing you shove it in their faces like that--probably the sexiest thing I've ever witnessed."
The second he says that I turn about a hundred shades of red. Everyone is suddenly looking at me.
Marshall's eyes widen when he realizes what he said before I see him scratch the back of his neck awkwardly and blush as well. "U-Uh...! I didn't mean--what I meant was--I...!" That is all he says before he looks down and stuffs his hands in his pockets.
Finn and Marceline wiggle their eyebrows at me.
I shoot them a look that pretty much says, SHUT UP.
They both simply smirk at me and keep staring.
