23 (NEW)

Sharon was not prepared for what had happened.

Seated beside Logan's lawyer, she could just stare in shock after what Matt had just told her. Her mind was blank and she wanted to pinch herself. Please tell her this was a dream. But never in her wildest dream would she have dreamed up of this.

"You've got to be joking,"she blurted out. If this wasn't a dream, let it be a joke. Something to relieve this heavy tension. Laughing awkwardly, she looked around the room. Everyone looked serious. Stiffening up, the laughter faded away. "This is ludicrous. A recipe for disaster. And, and you agreed to this?"

"I understand your reservations, Sharon, but I do believe you would be a good agent. For one thing, you've gained your client's trust. To the point of being requested directly by Logan. Especially with what Kathryn had done to him,"Matt said when she turned to him. "But I'm not putting you to work immediately. You'll work in a team and under someone I trust. Build up your knowledge and skill. In a couple of months, you'll be ready to be on your own."

"But as an agent? Logan's agent to be specific. I mean, how? How can you just agree-"

"Sharon, we will talk about it later,"Matt cut in, with a meaningful glance at the lawyer. That shut her up immediately. She knew it was not good to air out internal company matters in front of their clients but she hadn't been able to think clearly in her disbelief. Biting her lips, she nodded and tried to compose herself.

"As this is my client's request in order to keep this quiet, I hope Miss Ashwood will become proficient at this role. I do not want my client to be mishandled again,"the lawyer said, looking coldly down at her. Her pride was pricked and she returned his cold stare, straightening her back.

For some reason, this guys rubbed her the wrong way. Immaculately dressed in a three-piece suit, his light blonde hair and sharp green eyes gave off a cool feeling. In contrast, in her simple blouse and skirt, she felt out of place in the office. Which was ridiculous because it was perfectly fine for working in the office. But she would have dressed up if she knew she was to be included in this meeting. Not able to stand the scrutiny from him, she returned her attention to Matt.

"I can assure you that Miss Ashwood will be a fitting agent for Mr Carter. As mentioned, we will assign her to a team leader to assist him while we whip her up to task." Hey! She was quite insulted by the term he used. She was not a horse to be whipped.

But what Matt said was true. She needed time to learn the ropes. While she was doing that, Logan couldn't be neglected so an interim agent was needed. Something to help him recover his life and projects.

Wait, did that mean she had agreed to become his agent? What? No. Looking around for an escape, Logan caught her eyes. And in his gaze was apology and entreaty. Did he really want her to be his agent? Wasn't it a wild plan concocted by his lawyer to test the earnestness of Matt? Was this really his request?

She just couldn't wrap her head around this. She was developing a headache. She should stop thinking. Shaking her head, she realised there was not going to be any answers. Not now. Not with that hard-nosed lawyer in the room. She can only ask questions later.

But, in the meantime, she couldn't help but glare at him. He got her into this mess and he'd better have a good explanation.

----@@@-----

The meeting was over soon after. Logan left with his lawyer, meaning that Sharon was alone with Matt. Nervously fiddling her fingers, she waited for him to speak. The silence was so loud a simple creak almost made her jump out of her chair. And the creak had come from her own chair when she had shifted in her seat, she realised much to her humiliation. An involuntary wince when Matt sighed.

"Did you know about this?"Matt asked. Having not expecting that, she tensed up.

"A-about what? I mean, swear to God I didn't know anything about the agent thing,"she rushed to defend herself. There was no way she wanted to give him the impression that she wanted that role. He hadn't even considered her for that role before.

"Then that means that you knew about Kathryn." She stiffened even more. Was that what he was alluding to? Did she just expose herself? "From your reaction, I take it that I'm right."

"I d-don't know what you're talking about."

"Your expressiveness is the first thing we have to work on."

"Work on? For what? W-wait. You can't be taking his request seriously. I'm an utter greenhorn and-"

"We've gone through this, Sharon. You are going to be Logan's agent." Sharon shut her mouth. All her objections were silenced by the implacable tone in his voice. Pressing her lips together, she waited for him to continue. He sighed heavily. "Look, it's not like I wasn't planning to eventually bring this up."

"What? This is the first time I am hearing about this. You know the kind of jobs I'm looking for, right?"

"It wasn't anything concrete, I was just thinking about it, but, now, with Logan, this is happening earlier than planned. I mean, you are going with Cameron for his appointments. That's basically one of the roles of an agent. Especially for such a difficult client. So is building trust and a bond between the client and company. Right now, Logan's trust in us is shaken. But with you on the helm, it will help stabilise his impression of the company-"

"Not if I do a bad job. I mean, who would assign such a client under a new agent?" She was nearly drowning under the many surprises today. They all happened in such a short time that she had a hard time absorbing all of these. She needed to get out of there. And Matt must have realised her state of mind.

"I understand that this is a bit much to take in. Why don't you leave for the day and think about it? If you still don't want to take this up, I will talk to Logan and his lawyer and come up with something else."

She was so grateful for his thoughtfulness. But she wasn't able to recall what she said or did after that. The next thing she knew, she was walking out of the building with no plan in mind.

------@@@@------

Flipping through the channels, Cameron couldn't stop the yawn from escaping. Flicking back when something caught his eyes, he heaved a sigh of boredom when his interest disappeared in a flash. His head lolling at the top of the couch, he wondered how the meeting went.

In the past few days, with Logan being a frequent visitor to the apartment, there had been moments where the two of them were alone. It gave them the opportunity to catch up and shoot the wind. That was when he had revealed to Cameron his thoughts and worry. Things he couldn't speak with Sharon.

This incident with Kathryn had really made Logan leery of the industry. Like a skittish horse, his trust was harder to grasp now which would be difficult for any working relationship. That was when Cameron had joked about making Sharon his agent. Seemed like the perfect plan. The only drawback was that she didn't intend to be one.

Wondering whether he had gone with that, his lips couldn't help curving up into a wicked smile. He could just imagine Sharon's reaction if that was really the case. He hoped Matt was prepared for it. He knew his merriment for other's misery wasn't healthy but there was not helping it. This was payback for his upcoming appointment.

Feeling his phone vibrating beside him, he listlessly brought it up to his ear.

"Hello?"

"C-Cameron?" A soft, wet voice came through the line, shooting electricity down his spine. Resting his elbows on his knees, he took a deep breath.

"Sharon? Is that you? What's wrong?"

"Ah, um, I don't know how to say this but I'm, I, I'm Logan's agent,"she said, trying to sound chipper about it but failing. He heard the sob she suppressed at the last moment. His heartbeat quickening, both in surprise and concern, he struggled to find something to say.

"Oh, wow. Isn't that great? You're moving up." This was not the most appropriate situation but he tried to sound as bright as he could.

"But I don't want this,"she cried, sniffling loudly. His mind went blank. She was crying. Did she hate this so much? "This never even crossed my mind. I just wanted to do my job and find another fitting position after my contract is over. That's it. To find that people are scheming behind my back and not giving me a choice, it's just- it's just so high-handed."

"Then are you going to take it?" He felt like his blood boiling. It was like she was attacking him. He wanted to give this to her, to lift her up from the lone room she was stuck in. But to realise that his plan was far from appreciated stung. Ignoring the fact that she wasn't directing her animosity towards him.

"Of course I am. Logan asked for me. I can't disappoint him. It-it's just, I-I don't know what all of them were thinking. I'm clearly a bad choice. I don't want to fail." Her voice was so glum that he could almost see the pit of despair she was in. A pit of utter blackness where any and all light was absorbed. This was bad.

Cameron didn't know what to say. Her reluctance for the job was out in the open but her strong sense of responsibility was pushing her to take this up. While he admired her for it, he was at even more of a conflicted. He wanted her to take up the position but also wanted her to be happy. Was it wrong to wish her better in life?

A thud was heard over the line, bringing him back to the call.

"Hey, watch where you are going, stupid bitch,"a brash voice called. That was when the sound of traffic and people penetrated his ears. Don't tell him she was on the streets of New York? With such a volatile state of mind, she was easy picking.

"Share, where are you? Let me get you and we can talk at home."

"Leave me alone. I don't want to see you. I-I just want to think about this and get my mind straight,"she rejected harshly. Thumping the back of his head on the couch, he wondered why she had to be hardheaded now, of all times. Smacking his forehead, he wondered how he could convince her.

"Sharon, come on. I'm worried about you. Let me come to you. We don't have to talk about this. We can talk about something else. Or nothing at all. We can even go get more ice cream. Just tell me where you are."

Without him realising, these words were the most heartfelt he had uttered in his entire life. He had never worried about any other person in his life. Not like this. If anything happened to her- He couldn't even imagine it. Choking up, he had never felt as strong a sense of urgency for any other. Not even for his family.

What if she was mugged? Or raped? Or kidnapped? Or, worse, all three? She was so vulnerable right now that anyone could come up to her and do anything they want to her. His hand curling into a fist, he repeatedly hit his forehead gently.

Was this what love was about, he wondered. Caring and worrying about another person that he was about to tear his hair out? He was ready to drive everywhere around New York, between her office and the apartment just to make sure she was safe.

And that was madness. There were so many roads, alleys, underpasses in New York. She could be on any one of them. He wished he could track her. Deciding that was the first thing he'd do when she got back, he lifted the phone from his ear to check the screen. The call was still on. Why wasn't she saying anything?

He was about to give it his last shot when she spoke. From her voice, it was clear she was still on the fence about this.

"I, I'm going to the diner."

"Great. I'll be there soon." He knew his voice was too cheerful but there was no helping it. He had been ready to start driving around so the relief he felt when she spoke had crashed into him. He wasn't able to regulate his voice.

Ending the call, he rushed to his room.

AN: Hey guys. Here's another chapter. Hope you like it. And with this, the thing with Logan is OVER!! I'm so glad for that. I mean, I was taking my own sweet time with this with the last version that it felt like it was never going to end. Don't take me wrong. I like Logan but when is it going to end? Even as the author, there was no end in sight.

But, yes, so now I can focus on the main couple. Not that there won't be any more Logan but more time for them to shine. Let's welcome the antagonist. Mwa-ha-ha.

Also the mini one shot continues as April and Jason crashes someone's date. If you want to check it out, it's on my ko-fi!

Anyways, please VOTE and COMMENT if you like the chapter. Follow me on Wattpad or my blog for any updates.

THANKS!
