Entering the reception area, Cameron couldn't believe how hard his heart was beating. He wasn't doing anything overtly wrong. He was just coming to talk to Matt. That was his prerogative as Matt's client. He had some things to clear up. Yeah, about some contracts and his plans. That was why he was there.
So why was his palm so sweaty?
Ignoring that pesky voice in his head, he nodded at Jenna when she waved at him. He was relieved that she was busy on the phone. She had the bad habit of announcing his presence by flirting loudly with him. Usually he didn't mind that. But not today.
Why? Are you avoiding someone?
Nearly growling aloud at the mocking voice, he forced his lips into a smile when someone walked by. Absently recognising the flirtatious smile, he was able to let out a breath when he saw that this wasn't a certain redhead that he was hoping to stay clear of.
Why can't you admit that you're scared of Sharon?
His hands clenching into a fist, he barely held back the urge to physically bat away the voice. Which would look weird since he would only waving his hand around his head. His brows coming together in a scowl, he wondered why he had been riddled with this unseen companion the moment he had woken up.
He could admit, to himself, that he was meeting Matt behind her back. Even though she had explicitly told him that she would talk to Matt, going so far as to warn him away when he had sent her to work, he wanted to clear the air himself. He was the one who had landed her in hot water. So he had to be the one to rectify the issue.
Then why did you lie to yourself? Meeting Matt for a contract?
Barely withholding the wince, he had to admit that he was feeling very nervous when he had entered the office. He had been a blubbering mess, preparing an answer to any question when his progress had been unimpeded so far. And why would anyone question his presence in the first place? It was a known fact that he was the only client who, pretty much, have free rein in the office. If it was anyone else, he knew they'd have been escorted to one of the meeting rooms
Flexing his fingers, his eyes shot to the cubicles and he cursed the high walls. Knowing how short she was, he wasn't able to track her movement. And many of the women were basically flirting with him, hailing him down and reaching out to touch him. He wanted them to stop. This was increasing his chances of getting caught. He didn't want to get caught.
Sharon had explicitly told him to let her talk to Matt. She had even gone so far as to threaten his with gastronomic harm right when he had sent her to work. But, even though that threat had made him hesitate, he knew he had to be the one to talk to Matt. He had been the one who had besmirched her credentials so he had to be the one to rectify it. That didn't mean that he was going to advertise his actions. He was not dumb, even though he had gone on at Sharon about the perceived stupidity of athletes.
Keeping his eyes peeled for any approaching redhead, he caught movements at the corner of his eyes and, sensing something familiar, he turned to look down the hall. Imagine his surprise when he saw Logan coming out of a meeting room. His eyes narrowed when his agent came out shortly after.
This was not good.
Stopping at a hallway right after, he waited for her to leave. Usually, most agents would show their clients the way out, Cameron knew how Logan's agent worked, having caught her in action the few times he had been in the office. She would leave her clients to make their own way out. Granted, most would want to escape her presence immediately but this gave him a great opportunity to speak to Logan.
And he was not surprised to see her walking out of the hall alone. Making sure she was far enough away and was not going to head back, he made his way in and called a greeting to Logan.
"Hey, man."
"What- Oh, hey, Cam,"Logan said, his voice lacklustre, his wave lacking energy. Cameron saw that his attention was fixed on the papers in his hand. When he got closer, he realised that it was a contract. His brows furrowed together.
"What's this?" His eyes shot to Logan's when he didn't answer. "Logan, man, you alright?"
"I don't know if I am. Kathryn"-Logan's agent-"suddenly called me about thia endorsement-"
"Wait, did you sign this? Why didn't you call me? You know we talked about this,"Cameron hissed, his worry and concern coming out as anger. His hands were wrapped around Logan's upper arm and he had to withhold the urge to shake him. Cameron had told him to not do anything until Sharon had more evidence. He hadn't wanted to muddy the water until they had it resolved. And he had told Logan to call him if she contacted him.
"What? No. I didn't,"Logan said, pushing him away hard. Cameron watched him as he angrily paced up and down the area between meeting rooms. Luckily, the other rooms were unoccupied, from the open doors, so they didn't have to be worried about being overheard. "I was just trying to figure out how she was going to screw me over. And I thought that maybe this would make Sharon's job easier. I know she had a hard time looking for my contract. I want to be done with this as soon as possible. You know, I just want to play. I didn't sign up for this subterfuge."
The vulnerability in his voice made Cameron feel protective of him. Which surprised him. He had been outraged when Logan had first told him about this but not protective. He was never protective of his teammates. The way he had looked at them were like rivals, even though they were in the same team. He always knew that they were all gunning for his job so he didn't have the liberty to look after them. But, for some reason, Logan was bringing this out in him.
Not sure what he should say, his attention returned to his surrounding when he heard a familiar voice.
"Hey, watch where you're going."
Hearing files and papers dropping, he realised that Sharon was nearby. And from the piece of paper that floated just into the hallway, she was just outside. So near. Panic filling him, his eyes began to look about for a way out.
"Cam, are you alright?"Logan asked. That was when Cameron realised he had the perfect distraction.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Can you do me favor?" Not waiting for an answer, he began pulling Logan to the entrance. "Distract her for me. Don't let her know that I'm here."
"What about the contract-"
"Lunch. I'll call you for lunch. Now, talk to her."
Pushing him out, Cameron momentarily felt bad for using him but that feeling left him when he realised how incompetent he was.
"H-hey, Sharon. F-fancy seeing you here,"Logan said. Was that his starting line? Cameron couldn't believe how bad it was. She worked here, he screamed in his mind.
"Hey, Logan. I didn't know you were here. Not being rude or anything but why are you here? Isn't there supposed to be someone to see you out?" He was glad that someone was taking the rule seriously but he'd rather they had this conversation elsewhere.
"What?" He had to rub his face when Logan's voice went up two octaves at that word. How did he not notice that Logan was a bad liar? "I didn't know that. A-anyway, do you need help?"
"You know I can't let you look. These are all private documents, Logan. Come on, let me see you out."
Finally! His way was clear. He waited until he heard them moving away.
Then he raced to Matt's office. Barely sparing his assistant a smile, he slammed into the office and hurried to close the door. WIth his back to the door, he waited to hear for pursuit or shouts. When he heard nothing, he heaved a sigh of relief.
"What the- Cameron. Get the fuck out."
Hearing clothes rustling, Cameron immediately closed his eyes and turned to the door. That was when he noticed the familiar perfume that he'd always associated with Matt's wife.
Oh hell.
----@@@----
"Wait, was that Cameron?"
Sharon tried to turn around. She thought she'd heard someone running and from the peripheral glimpse, she'd seen a familiar shirt. The bright orange shirt that he had worn when he had sent her. But Logan began to tug at her arm.
"C-Cameron? Why would he be here? You must be seeing things,"he said with an awkward laugh. Narrowing her eyes on him, she stopped and refused to budge when he pulled at her arm. Realising that he wasn't looking at her, she pulled her arm from his grasp.
"Logan, what's going on? I know that's Cameron. That shirt is too distinctive. But why are you being so weird about it?" Folding her arms around the big pile of papers she carried, she waited for his response. That's when she realised that he had come out of the same hallway that Cameron had run out from. "Wait, did he tell you to distract me?"
"What are you talking about?"he asked, looking at her with wide eyes. She didn't buy it. His voice had gone up two octaves.
"I knew it. That man is such a meddler. I told him that I'll talk to Matt. And what was the first thing he did? He goes behind my back to talk to Matt. He makes me so angry,"she growled, gripping the papers tightly to her chest. Not wanting to make Logan feel even worse than he already did, she directed her glare to the ground. And that was when she saw the papers in his hand. Her anger dissipating, she read what she could and felt her eyes widen in shock. "Is that a contract?"
"What? No,"Logan said defensively even as he tried to hide it. When she looked at him, he tried to play it off, leaning nonchalantly against the wall. "I mean, Kathryn just gave this for me to look over. It's nothing serious."
"That explains her stomping around. She wanted you to sign it immediately, right?"she said drily. At his look of surprise, she nodded sagely. "I've figured her out. Know how she works. I'd suggest that you let a lawyer take a look at it and any papers she gives you."
"I thought, maybe, you can look at it? Since you are looking into everything else."
Nonplussed by vulnerability in his eyes, she was viscerally reminded of his age. He was barely out of his teen and someone was already trying to take advantage of his youth. Feeling so old beside him, she, nonetheless, felt that she should guide him. Taking a look at her watch, she nodded decisively.
"Alright. How about this? I'll be going out for lunch in ten minutes. Meet me downstairs and we can talk,"she offered as they made their way to the exit. That meant that they had to pass the busy office area and she could feel many eyes on them but she didn't care. She only wanted to help him. At his nod, she smiled
"Wait, what about Cameron? Shouldn't he join us as well?"Logan said just as she was about to leave him.
"Um, I think he's going to be occupied."
AN: Hey guys. How you doing? What do you think of this chapter? I find that it is easier to stick to certain parts of the original draft but, of course, there's some changes. What do you think about this thing with Logan and his agent? LET ME KNOW.
