Sharon was rethinking the grocery shopping trip when she had to skip an aisle again. It had slipped her mind that it was a Saturday so there was quite a crowd that morning. And she was steadily growing frustrated with all the people blocking all the aisles. She wished Cameron was there so that he could distract her but, knowing that he had returned late into the night, or early in the morning, she knew he had to be tired. Now she was cursing her altruism as she entered a relatively empty aisle. Looking around, she had to repress a sigh and grabbed the first pasta sauce she saw. She almost put it back as it was her least favourite sauce but she couldn't muster the energy to care.
It felt weird not feeling his warmth beside her. She would have thought that she would enjoy this moment alone. But she would find herself looking for him at every corner and every unguarded moment. Surely she was not that attached to him. It had taken her at least two months before she missed her previous boyfriend. And she had went out with him expecting to get into a relationship.
Her brows furrowing together as she walked aimlessly, she wondered why she was feeling Cameron's absence so keenly. They had only known each other for, at most, ten days. And even though it was true that they had been in each other's presence every morning and evening, surely she didn't really miss him. It was just the human company that she missed. Almost cursing when the wheel of a cart behind her ran into her, she corrected herself. She missed the personal connection between herself and another human.
Seeing the frozen food aisle up ahead, her lips tugged up as she remembered Cameron's whining last week. Pausing in front of a fridge filled with frozen pizza, she was debating whether she should get one for him. It would be something nice to do for him, to show her appreciation for his help in getting her the position and being her chauffeur even though she had repeatedly told him she was perfectly happy commuting on her own.
Her lips tugged up when she recalled the morning Cameron had foiled her plan to join the early morning commute on her second day of work. She had woken up an extra hour early to get ready and prepare dinner. Since she had prepared the ingredients for dinner the night before and only had to toss them into the crock pot, she had taken an extra fifteen minutes with her hair and makeup. Then she had hurried to the fridge only to find it empty. Totally empty. There was nothing in the crisper, nothing in the fridge apart from the frozen food and her defrosting beef. Everything else was gone.
She had been puzzling over her missing ingredients when it had occurred to her that Cameron could have been responsible. Mad that she had wasted over half an hour, she had stormed to his room and was about to barge in when she realised that his door was locked. Becoming even more incensed, she had pounded on his door only to get no response. Shouting his name for another five minutes, she had been rewarded by a groan. That had made her shout and pound even more. Finally, the door was wrenched into the room and Cameron took its place.
Having not expected his sudden appearance, Sharon had been in the midst of stopping her next knock but the interruption to her momentum made her stumble forward and into his chest. She was stunned by the hardness of his torso and warmth he was exuding. The hardness was a nice contrast to her softness. She had been tempted to push further into him, but her senses returned in the nick of time. She had pushed away from him and with a scowl, she demanded her ingredients back. She had been surprised when he hadn't shown any indication of hearing her heart racing. The short encounter had imprinted his body into her and she wanted to be against him again.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, being cranky after being awaken at the wrong side of the bed, he had refused to let her have anything until he had the chance to get ready. She had been able to escape that situation without behaving like a fool. And he had made his point about sending her to and from work. Something she was not looking to fight against unless she had a better idea.
And now, she realised, she had been smiling at the fridge full of frozen pizza for the last ten minutes. She could just imagine how idiotic she looked like, smiling vacuously at frozen food, despite the near empty aisle. Feeling her cheeks redden, she was getting ready to make her escape when someone spoke to her.
"I have some coupons I can give you."
Startled, she looked at the slight man at the end of the aisle and had to smile at the way he was awkwardly holding out the coupons. His dark brown hair was falling all over his face, giving him a very disheveled air but his almond russet eyes were sharp, albeit filled with discomfort. Walking over to him, she took the coupons out of his hand.
"Thanks. I've not had the chance to collect my own set of coupons,"she said, shyly ducking her head and looking through his coupons.
"Oh, you can take anyone you want. I've used what I wanted,"he said, tucking his hand into his back pocket. Sharon didn't know what to do. She didn't really want to use the coupons but it would be impolite if she didn't take at least one. She was wondering how she was going to get out of the situation when the familiar song by TLC was heard. Realising it was her phone, she passed him back the coupons.
"Sorry. I have to take this,"she told him and walked a way away to answer her phone. The voice that greeted her was familiar and angry.
"Sharon, where the hell are you?"Cameron growled into the phone, making her raise her brows. Why was he sounding so angry? Had she done something? To her knowledge, she had not done anything to warrant the level of anger he was exhibiting. So she was stunned when he repeated his question.
"I'm at Walmarts,"she responded carefully. Then feeling like she had to justify herself, she added, "I need to buy groceries. Didn't I tell you last night?"
"And didn't I tell you we will be going grocery shopping?"he returned irritatedly.
"We? As in together? There's no need for you to come along,"she said, surprised by his irritation. Hoping to placate him, she offered, "As I'll be back soon, do you want me to get you anything?"
"I don't want anything. I would have liked if you had woken me up." Hearing him moving around and the sudden clicking of the door latch catching. Was he going out?
His irritation sparking her own vexation, she shot back exasperatedly, "Why? You don't know what you want to cook, what's in the kitchen and you pretty much use whatever toilet roll, softener and soap is in the apartment. You're a typical guy in that regard. So your presence here is really not needed."
"That's not the point. The point is- The point is-" Hearing a chime in the background, she was sure he was getting into the elevator but she was distracted by him uncharacteristic stammer.
"Yes, do tell what the point is,"she goaded, delighting at him stumbling over his words. "Is the point the fact that there's no point? Or that you're being an ass-"
"The point is that I want to get some stuff and now I forgot what they are,"he finally said. Sharon rolled her eyes. That was just an excuse and they both knew it. It was just whether she would want to call him out on it. "I'm the type who remembers while walking around the shop. I'm sorry I'm not as organised as some people."
"Yeah. I believe that,"she muttered doubtfully.
"Well, I am,"he returned, making her laugh.
"The lady doth protests too much, methinks,"she quoted, her voice rife with amusement. "Or, in this case, the lord."
"What are you talking about? And where are you? I'm coming to get you."
The laughter that had been bubbling on her lips vanished. As much as she appreciate his ready offer of assistance, she was starting to realise how she had come to expect and enjoy his presence. And, seeing as she had just got out of a bad relationship, she was realising how unhealthy it was. She had barely shaken off the tethers of her last relationship so being entangled with another man, no matter how platonic, was not wise.
Thus, seeing it as a good opportunity to exert her newfound independence, she said, "I can get back on my own. I still have the card Scott gave me so transportation is not a problem-"
"I need to talk to you,"he cut in, sounding serious which gave her pause. For the length of time she had known him, as short as it was, she had never heard him sounding this severe. Not even during the time he told her about his need for a physical therapist. He had been serious but not sombre. Not as sombre as now. Fighting over her need to exert her independence and her natural inclination to help, it was his next words that decided it. "Please."
Sighing, she accepted that it had to be serious for this proud man to stoop to pleading and answered his question on her whereabouts. She wondered whether it was a good idea as she rested her forehead on the cool doors but knew the die had been cast.
And she could not do anything about it.
A.N: Hey guys. Sorry for being MIA for 2 weeks. I was slightly distracted by setting up Accidental Pregnancy.
Anyway, hope you like this chapter. Although it is quite short, it does delve into their growing relationship. Well, it may only be Sharon's POV so I will put more of Cam's POV next chapter.
Please VOTE & COMMENT if you like it or if there's any other suggestions. THANKS
