Chapter 29

Cameron had never felt awkward with Scott. Their friendship had started in college and it had deepened even after they had started their separate careers. It has began with their shared love for football and branched from there. But, today, in Scott's car, there was an air of awkwardness and anger between them.

He knew it was because of Sharon but not only that. He had broken Scott's trust in him. Scott had explicitly said to look after her in one of their conversations. He had also said not to hook up with her. He had mentioned it a few times in fact. But, to Cameron, it wasn't a hook up. She was his future. Mother to his children. He could see them growing old together, the fire he had for her still strong, still bright. He had to make him see that if he wanted their friendship to survive. However, he could see that it did not help that he had dodged his calls since the day the media revealed their relationship.

At the restaurant, Cameron requested a table even though they were only ordering takeout. Scott hadn't looked at him. The waitress tried to flirt and tempt them but they ignored her. Scott, because he was married. And for Cameron... Objectively, he realised she was attractive, beautiful even but he only wanted his dark-haired, emerald lady.

'That was the first time I had ever seen you ignore an invitation,'Scott said. At the blank look from Cameron, he just indictated to the waitress who'd just left.

'Well, I'm a one woman man now,'he informed Scott. 'Plus she has nothing on Sharon, who's warm, smart, beautiful and make me feel like a teenager with his first crush.' And he immediately felt like hitting his head on the table. Oh yeah, why don't you just try and jump off a bridge at the same time? Idiot.

He hadn't meant to say all that. Made him sound like he was buttering him up even if all that was said had been true. He wanted Scott to make the first move. But now that the subject had been broached, might as well go all out. 'What do you have against me and Sharon?'

Slightly taken aback by both the confession and his directness, he took a moment to answer. The time was enough for Cameron to start looking at the menu. He was searching for healthier dishes because he knew Sharon. She'd be baking some unhealthy yet delicious desert so he had to balance it out.

'Well, that was intense,'Scott finally said as he also looked over the menu too. 'But considering your history, don't you think I, her brother-in-law, have some room to be worried? Especially when she first approached us.'

'Yeah, she told me all about it.'

'She did? Well, good for her. She needed someone to vent to and Amelia was going mad with worry that'd she'd do something drastic.'

'Nah. Sharon's not suicidal. The only thing she would have done is gorge on ice cream until she gets over it. Don't know when she would have without me but the only threat she poses to is her arteries. She may have been wary and guarded but I would like to think I've helped her over them.'

Seeing the secretive grin on his face, Scott looked like he was debating whether to be offended or amused. In the end he just smiled and shook his head. 'From what I saw today, I glad that she had moved on from that dick. Although I'm not going to ask how you helped her. It's best if I don't lie to Amelia, especially since I've gotten back into her good graces after you spilled the beans on my bachelor habits.' At that, he shot Cameron an annoyed look. To which he laughed uproariously. The other patrons looked at them, some eyes lighting up as they recognised the athlete.

'Well, you didn't inform me about Sharon. So I just assumed,'he retorted, shrugging, after he stopped laughing. Scott just frowned.

They had already placed their orders and were waiting for it. Meanwhile, those who recognised him had taken out their phones but he ignored them. He didn't mind. How exactly was their outing incriminating? It'd be interesting to see what they came out with.  Anyway, Sharon wouldn't mind. She had been surprisingly chill about the recent articles. Especially the ones regarding the dinner. When he asked her about it, he response was,'It's not bad. And as I've said. You'll protect me if it ever become nasty.'

As they exited the restaursnt, although it had not been said, Cameron knew that Scott was beginning to accept his relationship with Sharon. The air between them less tense. He was glad. He didn't wanted to alienate his closest friend but Sharon was vital to him. If worse came to worse, he would choose Sharon over him.

He hoped Sharon had a better time placating Amelia.

  - -------------@@@@@--------------

Although Amelia had agreed to back off, she still felt uncomfortable letting Sharon be with Cameron. Especially with respects to his philandering history. She knew she was late in acting like the big sister but better late than never, she always said.

Plus, she had a purpose in coming back early. Although seeing them making out in her beloved sofa was not one of them. OH, MY EYES. MY EYES. She cringed internally even as her exterior was as placid as ever.

Hearing the guys come in, she started for the dining room. Sharon immediately gravitate to Cameron, helping him with the purchases. She couldn't help but notice the ease they had with each other, their openness. She had to admit, although she loved her husband to the bottom of her heart, she had never displayed such open affection with him. Not that it was bad but it was interesting observing a couple who was as comfortable with each other as the both of them were.

'So what did you buy for me?'Sharon asked as she started plating. Amelia helped to take out the salad. 'Do I smell veal parmigiana?' She looked hopefully up at Cameron. Another thing she can't help but observe. Their obvious height disparity. Cameron was a least 1 foot taller but Sharon didn't feel intimidated or put off.

'I don't know. What do you promise to do for it?'Cameron asked suggestively. Sharon giggled. Amelia cringed. Did she and Scott sound like that when they flirted? Scott caught her eyes and faked a shudder. She had to smile. In that glance, they also agreed to leave the two be until evidence otherwise.

'Are we talking sexually here or food wise?'

'Are you ready for sexual banter?'

'Maybe. But let me research on this first. You obviously have more experience in this,'Sharon said seriously. It surprised her but Cameron's response was a tender smile.

'Well, when and if you're ready, I will let you win the first one. But only the first.' He sounded magnanimous but she could see that he would be there for her if she needed him. And Sharon knew that. He began to bring the serving plates out. 'Hey, Scott. Isn't this your house? Why are we serving?'

'Cameron,'Sharon cried exasperatedly.  However, Cameron did bring up a good point. This was their house but watching Sharon and Cameron's interaction between themselves and the house made them feel like outsiders. They knew where everything was. It was just prudent that she and Scott stayed out of their way. She had a feeling they'd be losing the house in the future. Which was fine since she had no personal attachment with it.

'That's it. No brownies for you mister,'Sharon scolded as she brought out the last platter. They sat down to eat. Cameron pouted.

'Are you pouting?'she asked incredulously.

'Men do not pout,'Scott and Cameron said together. Sharon giggled while she had to stifle her laugh. They scowled at their women. It was amusing to see her husband act soo juvenile. They scowl remained on their faces while Sharon poured the wine. Cameron softened first.

'So what do you want?'he asked as he picked up her plate.

'I can take it myself,'she informed him but he gave her a look. Sighing, she gave up and pointed to the dishes that she wanted. It was sweet observing their interaction. Although Amelia and Scott's relationship differed from theirs, she knew their feelings were still the same, still as deep and lasting.

Dinner passed uneventful. Sharon and Cameron asking about their trip while Amelia and Scott asking about their stay in New York. Amelia and Scott laughed at Sharon's recollection at the 'almost-defilement' of her desk and the way Cameron had acted with the 'oh so dreamy' Dr Tucker while Cameron shot them a mock-fierce glare. They wanted to know more their photo shoot and when it'd be out. Sharon wanted to know how Amelia could stand all the posing and makeup. She just said,'Practice.' To which she pouted and drawled,'That's soo much help.' Cameron and Scott, in the meantime, had been discussing Cameron's next move.

Finally the dreaded question came up.

'Why are the both of you back soo soon?'
