Chapter Five: Unforeseen Alternative

Ron spent the rest of his day sulking at a park he found on his random walk. After the word brawl with his mate, he knew going right away to Charles's home wouldn't be a good idea, so to buy himself some time, he spent the day at the park. Staying away from Charles wasn't the only reason he had to sit at the park but because he also needed time to himself. He had to figure things out on how it would go from here.

"You made my friends betray me."

Ron couldn't understand what Charles meant by that. It wasn't like Ron had just went straight to his friends to ask for directions. Ron had searched everywhere for him and he had gave up when everything he tried was impossible. The private investigators he hired to look for Charles would always quit after some months that Ron had no choice but to stop getting those to help him. He had looked for Charles in his own way and when he couldn't, even after asking Zach, he gave up and lived miserably. He had not expected Kenneth to help him out by getting answers from Zach but he didn't regret it either. In fact, he would do it again and again if things ended up that way as well.

Ron wondered if he should give up or not but the answer to that was crystal clear. He wasn't giving up any time soon because he was a fighter. A few words shouldn't frighten him to back away. Charles had welcomed him in his house and that meant something. He didn't shut the door on his face and that was a positive sign. Ron could only toughen himself up with the small signs that Charles had shown positive to his presence. Despite the argument earlier, which Ron dismissed it just as a heat of the moment, everything seemed to be fine and Ron had no reason to quit.

Laughter sounds caught Ron's attention and he gazed at the source. There was a man, a woman and a girl. The woman was pregnant and Ron concluded it was a family having fun at the park. How the three interacted made Ron's heart ache and once again he found himself lost in Charles thoughts.

If him and Charles worked things out, they would start their own family. Ron had always wanted to have a family of his own because he only had Kenneth to call family. But now Kenneth had Roman and their baby, which left him all alone. Charles was his only chance to build himself a family. Ron had to make sure their problems were cleared and sitting in a park wasn't going to help him. Ron stood up from where he sat and began walking to Charles's house. It was a good distance from where he was to where he was going but with determined strides, he began his journey on foot.

The sun was setting and Ron estimated he had been walking for an hour. He wasn't tired but walking had bored him enough to not walk anymore. He sighed in relief when he saw the woods ahead of him. He planned to venture into the woods and change forms, that way he would reach Charles's home faster. It was a good thing his neighborhood was surrounded by the woods. Ron smiled when he entered the woods. He walked further, away from prying eyes before deciding to remove his clothes in order to prevent them from being destroyed when he shifts. He was about to unbuckle his belt when his ears caught on to footsteps sounds and sobs.

The sound got closer to him until two men and a girl appeared before him. The two men were werewolves but the little girl was a human. She had quieten down her sobs when she noticed the men had stopped walking. Ron's eyes wondered to the two men who each stood beside the little girl before going back to the girl.

"Is everything alright?" Ron asked because he could smell fear from the little girl.

"Yes we are fine." One of the men answered.

"We are just taking our wondering niece back home." The other added.

"Okay." Ron nodded but didn't buy the lies. "Are you okay?" He asked the little girl.

"Y-yes." Her voice trembled and Ron confirmed that something was wrong.

The two men knew they had been busted and one attacked Ron while the other restricted the girl from running away. Ron didn't break a sweat as he dodged, punched and kick the man until he was unconscious. The second man didn't take so long to surrender and Ron tied their hands on their back with their shoelaces. It wasn't that strong but it could hold them now that they were both unconscious.

The girl ran to him and hugged his waist. She cried and Ron tried to make her stop by comforting her and assuring her that everything was alright. Suddenly the girl started running further into the woods and Ron ran after her. She was shouting for her parents and when they came out to a house backyard, Ron realized this was her home. He followed the girl inside and to his horror, he saw them lying on the floor surrounded by blood. He didn't hear any heartbeat. They were dead, murdered in cold blood.

Ron carried the crying girl away from the hideous scene and called the police. Soon, the place was littered with police officers and two ambulances came; one for the dead bodies and the other for the little girl since she had collapsed. Ron told one of the detectives about the two men in the forest and they were arrested.

"You said you were on your way home; do you mind if I give you a ride?" The detective that Ron had talked to earlier, asked.

"I think I'll have to check on the girl at the hospital first before going home. Do you mind giving me a ride to the hospital?" Ron asked with a smile and the detective chuckled.

"I don't mind, come on." The detective led Ron to his car and drove off to the hospital.

It was dark by now, the sun had set a while ago. The ride to the hospital was spent in silence, which Ron didn't mind because a lot was going on in his mind. He was worried about the girl. He wondered if she had any relatives to take her in since she was an orphan now.

"We are here." The detective announced and together they exited the car.

"Detective Wallace," Ron started.

"You can call me Tony."

"Tony, you don't have to wait with me. I'm sure you have other important things to do." Ron murmured. The detective, Tony, sat with him in the waiting room since the girl was being attended to with doctors. She had internal bleeding and they were operating to stop the bleeding.
"It's okay I can wait with you. I don't have anything to do at the moment. I hope you don't mind some company." Tony said.

"I don't mind." Ron smiled.

Ron was shocked when he heard about the bleeding. He had thought she was okay but he was wrong. He didn't mind having Tony with him because he was somehow scared to know how the operation went. They had discovered she was bleeding late and there was a possibility they wouldn't stop it in time. Ron was freaking out internally while he held up being tough on the outside.

"Don't you have any one to call? It's getting late." Tony asked and Ron shook his head. Ron thought he had no one to call but then he remembered Charles. He debated on whether to call him or not. He had lost his phone in the woods and when it was retrieved by the policemen, it had no power. Ron couldn't call Sanjay because he had not memorised his phone number but he could call Charles. It was a silly thing to do but Ron had memorised his mate's number when he was cleaning earlier.

"I think I should make that call." Ron told Tony and the latter gave him his phone to use. He dialled the memorised number and only hoped he got the numbers right.

"Hello?" Charles's voice sounded on the other line and Ron smiled. He had missed that voice.

"Charles!" Ron exclaimed in happiness.

"Where are you?" Charles sounded worried and Ron frowned in confusion.

"I'm at Precious Hospital-"

"I'm on my way."

The call ended and Ron looked at the phone in confusion. He wondered why Charles sounded worried on the phone. So many things ran in his mind and he was thankful when Tony interrupted.

"Is everything okay?" He asked Ron.

"Yeah." Ron replied and gave back the phone to Tony.

A few minutes passed by and Ron smelled his mate's scent before said man appeared. He got up from the seat just as Charles reached him.

"Are you alright? What happened? Why are you in the hospital?" Charles inquired while scanning Ron's body for any injuries.

"I'm fine, Charles." Ron assured his mate and proceeded telling him what had happened and why he was in the hospital.

A clearing throat interrupted the two and Charles looked over Ron's shoulder. A man stood there looking at him then smiled at Ron when he turned around to face the man. Charles pulled Ron to him and secured his arms around his mate.

"Charles this is Tony and Tony this is Charles." Ron introduced the two. Now that Charles was here, he was a bit calmer inside.

"Tony?" Charles raised a brow in question.

"Yes. He's detective Wallace and he drove me here. He decided to keep me company." Ron explained with a smile.

"Hi." Charles greeted Tony with a false smile. "I'm Ron's boyfriend." He added while shaking hands with Tony.

Ron coughed when he heard Charles introduce himself as his boyfriend. He wasn't sure how to introduce him as, earlier when he introduced the two. It didn't feel right to say friend, so he didn't label Charles as anything but it seemed he didn't need to do that since Charles could label himself just fine.

"Babe, are you okay?" Charles frowned and turned Ron around to face him.

"Yes I'm fine."

Ron was now aware of the arms around him and it made his heart beat faster. He looked up and their eyes met. This wasn't an everyday occurrence where Charles would have his arms around him and worry about him. Ron had never seen this side of Charles before and now he regretted not saying he wasn't fine. He wondered how Charles could have acted then. Perhaps he could have even kissed it better.

"Hey guys." Sanjay greeted when he arrived in the waiting room.

Charles let go of Ron in order for the latter to greet Sanjay. He was glad Ron was fine and that they were together now. Their problems were long forgotten and only the present mattered. The four men sat down and together waited to hear from the doctor.

"Detective Wallace?" A man in light blue clothes approached the men and they all stood up.

"Yes." Tony stepped up.

"I'm Doctor Cruz. I was told you were here for Maria Simmons." The doctor paused and Tony nodded. "She's stable. We managed to stop the bleeding but because she was in shock, we've left her unconscious to give her brain some time out."

"Can I see her?" Ron asked and Doctor Cruz turned to him.

"Are you related to the patient?"

"No. I found her and called for the ambulance."

"I'm sorry we can't let you see her at the moment. Perhaps you can come back tomorrow and see her. She will be conscious by then."

"Okay." Ron sighed. He still wanted to see the kid.

"Follow me." The doctor suddenly announced and Ron was the first to follow while the others came behind.

The doctor had noticed how dejected Ron had been when he was denied to see the patient, so he led them to Maria's room. The room she was in, had a glass wall on one side and that's where the doctor stopped. He told them they were not allowed inside but could watch her from there.

By the time they walked out of the hospital, Ron was feeling better. He said goodbye to Tony and Sanjay, who drove away in their own cars before he joined Charles in his car. The drive back to Charles house was spent in silence. Surprisingly, nothing much was on Ron's mind. He closed his eyes enjoying the comfortable silence in the car.

Charles looked beside him and found Ron sleeping. He reached out his free hand and held his mate's hand. He looked away, missing the smile on Ron's face and continued to drive home.
