Chapter 9
My heart pounding a mile a minute trying to rip itself out of my rib cage and run far away from reality, I shut my eyes tight as I bolted out of the room, pleading and screaming for someone to help.
The staff growing frantic, doctors and nurses rushed into the room, pushing me out of the way and locking the door behind them with supplies already tossed into the room. My legs shaking violently, I continued to try to keep them functional as I slammed my feet against the ground with every step I took.
Pacing up and down the hallway, my eyes snapping up to the door every other second my mind was rushing with thoughts. Fear, anxiety, worry, hopelessness, all of it swarming and striking, hitting my hysteria where it hurt.
My breaths escaping me, not even close to being in my reach, I felt myself stumble as I made my way to a chair clumsily. What feels like hours was in reality ten minutes, as the doctor pushed open the door I stared at him, my whole body ready to rush into the room to check on my friend.
A quick nod giving me the permission, I dashed back into the room, collapsing in front of Jack's bed I rest my head on his mattress. Jack's eyes wide at the reaction, he let a weak smile grow on his lips as he picked up his hand sluggishly and rest it on the top of my head.
Combing through my hair in calming motions, opening my mouth to speak, I found my throat too tight to let a single breath out. Burying my face in my arms, I let out a small shaky sob.
Resting with Jack in this position for a while until I could gain my composure, Jack tapped me lightly before resting his hand back on the bed.
"What happened? Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm alright Mark don't worry about me."
"I'm pretty sure this is a damned good time to be worrying Jack!" An exhausted laugh coming out of Jack, he lay his hand on mine and squeezed tightly. Heat rushing to my face not being able to tell whether it was blush or tears, I sighed as I looked away.
"Are you really okay?" Jack's face incomprehensible, I glanced up at him, worry shining through my eyes he looked to the side, a small smile on his face.
"Just some bruised organs, the doctor went to go get some more pain medication since mine has been washing away slowly, besides my dose is needed soon again anyways. Nothing serious, so see? No need to worry." Cupping my face in his hands, he stroked my cheek with his thumb a few times, wiping away a tear I didn't notice and I let out a nervous laugh.
"You really scared me."
"I'm sorry." Jack's face contorting in guilt, I shook it off, trying to think of something to make it up to him. Scanning through options and anything that would make him smile genuinely, my eyes widened at the sudden idea that had popped itself into my head.
My heart clenching tightly, causing the breath to nearly knock out of me, I looked up at Jack, putting my hand on his.
"Jack?"
"Hmm?"
"I know something that might make you feel better."
