Chapter 2
The sirens wailed and red and blue lights flashed past me every second or two, my chest tightening it was interrupted by a woman with a stern yet gentle voice.
"Hi my name is Officer May, do you know the victim that was hit?"
"I, uhm...I-I don't know"
"...Hey, it's alright to be worried or scared, this stuff happens a lot, and it's really frightening, but you'll get through it okay?"
Nodding my head, my throat too tight to respond with proper words, she extended her hand.
"Come on, I'll see if I can pull some wires." Looking up at her I got a good look at her. She had blue, green eyes, her brown hair reached just past her shoulder blades but her smile was what really calmed me down.
It was soft, sincere, her eyes showed actual worry for me. Knowing she meant no harm, I put my hand in hers and she slowly pulled me away from where the boy used to be on the floor, and went up to one of the paramedics.
As soon as she walked up to them her mouth started to move, but I couldn't hear the words that were escaping her lips. My focus was elsewhere, all the sounds had faded out leaving only a humming noise, the wind causing the hairs to stand up on my arms, I turned to look into the ambulance and my heart squeezed tight.
He lay on a makeshift bed, the ones that were easy to assemble during emergencies, I couldn't see much, except that he was laid down flat and he wasn't moving an inch. He could be unconscious. Or...
No, no of course he couldn't be. They wouldn't be taking him to a hospital if he was gone, and they certainly wouldn't have kept him uncovered if that was the case. But... My eyes widening, I noticed that they had put a sheet over his legs.
Scanning the scenery, I swiped my gaze over to where he initially was, and my stomach churned as I saw a dark puddle where his legs were. Opening my mouth, about to ask a question a hand placed itself on my shoulder and I yelped.
"Woah, woah, it's alright, it's just me."
"May...." My voice was hoarse, and it cracked when I sounded out her name. She grinned at me, knowing that I remembered her name and made a motion to follow her.
"You're allowed to come in the ambulance as long as I follow with the cruiser to make sure you don't make any trouble alright?" Nodding at May, she helped me up into the ambulance and pointed to the spot where I was able to sit down which was right beside the boy.
The paramedics were moving swiftly, checking the boy with all sorts of tests, at least the one's they were able to do in such a small vehicule, this certainly wasn't big enough to house all the supplies but it'd have to do. As soon as I was in, they immediately shut the doors and the ambulance began to move at a fast rate.
At this point, the paramedics were sitting down except for one, and they all kept an eye on different things, I, was looking at the boy. I didn't even know his name, or anything about him, all I knew was that he was walking across the road.
And I hit him.
I hit a boy, he was shorter than me, at least by a little, but not by much. My mind continued to race with all the possibilities, yet none of them had a good outcome. Still, they left me occupied until we arrived at the hospital.
As soon as we parked we were lead to a hallway, being told to wait there, I sat down on a chair as they carted him away into two big doors to what I assume was a surgery room, not that I'd know, I've only been in a hospital a handful of times.
A shaky breath escaping my lips, I buried my head in my hands, guilt washing over me as it had been biting back this entire time. Tears welling up and falling from my eyes, I merely shook my head as I waited in the silence.
Worried, and alone.
What have I done.
