Chapter 14
An update? In this economy?
Yes, yes indeed.
Since we're back in quarantine at least where I am I thought I might as well finish whatever I didn't on Wattpad and I really do enjoy writing this book.
So here I am! And here you go :D
I hope you're all doing well by the way, I know times can be tough right now but hang on tight, okay? <3 Things will get better
==================
What he saw was never what he wanted. Not in a million years. In fact this probably shortened his life five years minimum. There wasn't a single thought that was passing through his mind as he stared at the hallway.
How could there be? Shock is one hell of a factor when you're faced with something you wouldn't expect. It was just blank.
Whatever was happening felt far enough away to the point where this could've just been some show on TV. Muffled dialogue and sounds, narrowed vision, panicked breathing.
His heart drumming maniacally.
Doctors and nurses were rushing in and out of the room, one carrying bundles of very revolting gauze and Mark's jaw clamped down, teeth grinding against each other, his head lost in spirals.
His eyes were staring right at the scene in front of him but his brain wasn't registering the situation. Every second the blood pulsed through him it only felt colder.
This was worse than any ocean.
He couldn't even move. He just waited as the staff buzzed around until eventually they stopped. How many minutes had passed he had no clue, maybe ten, maybe one.
The nurses had cleared the room carrying out piles of bloody bandages with nasty blotches of yellow, Mark took the advantage and dashed into the room while there was too many things going on for them to worry about Mark.
Gaze darting around the room desperately his shoulders fell once he finally landed on Jack. His head was resting heavily upon his pillow and the grimace he wore was as plain as day. Jack wiped it off in an instant when their eyes met.
"Hey."
"Hey man...How is everything?"
"Aha, it's not the greatest. The operation is going to be within the next three days, could be an hour from now, could be the third day at twelve at night, could be no day at all."
The news came off casual, but it was clear as day this was no ordinary sentence. Shadows looked like clouds above his head as Jack's gaze ripped away from Mark.
You don't even know what happened, do you?
A knot twisted into the pit of his stomach. Staggering forward slightly making his way to the bed, Mark sat down in a chair comfortably close to Jack.
"I'm so sorry." He managed to whisper. Jack's face softened at the sudden apology and turned himself as best he could towards Mark's direction. Somewhat confused at where the apology came from.
"I already told you not to be."
"I can't help it."
"Try your best, I'm a man of steel! Sure I got knocked down, but I'll get back up and I have you here! We're going to be alright."
The room felt a little lighter once the words fell from Jack's mouth. He grinned up at Mark, eyes beaming with complete and utter support bringing the realization to dawn on Mark of the fact that Jack was injured, and yet he was the one soothing Mark. Even so much so up to the point where he has to undergo emergency surgery.
The shine of hope blasting through his eyes convinced Mark, though controversial emotions still trembled under the surface. Mark broke eye contact, his thumb stroking the outside of Jack's hand.
"I hope you're right." Another heart melting smirk shot straight at Mark.
"I know I am. Look, when I get out it'll be just us. No hospitals, no injections, nothing. Just you and I, and maybe a pint. Sounds fair?"
He'd realized a tad too late what he had said, but stood by them nonetheless sincere with every word that left his mouth.
All he was happy about was the fact that he was lying down otherwise his knees would've given up longer before his mouth did. Meanwhile, Mark couldn't quite speak.
Heat coursed through him and singed at the tip of his ears. Whatever expression he wore must've been one worth laughing at, but Jack would never say anything about it.
Was this a date? This, seemed very much like a date. If he was asking, who was he to say no? It wasn't like he disliked Jack either so it wouldn't be terrible to give it a go.
And, he kind of wanted to...
A sigh shuttered out of his mouth, causing their attention focus solely on one another. A now heavy blush dusted both of their faces in the moments that awaited a response, a warm tension swirling thickly in the air.
"...Yeah... I'd, I'd like that."
