Chapter 3: Arriving at Arendelle

(Normal pov)

"So Hiccup, where are you from?"

Hiccup turned to Edgar, the man was about his own age, he had hazel eyes, dirty blond hair and was lean in muscle like himself. Deciding to be truthful, Hiccup answers Edgar's question. "In truth, I was born a Viking, my former home was a place called Berk." He said while fixing straps on Toothless's prosthetic tail, Edgar cocked his head slightly. "Was? As in you don't live there now?" He asked, Hiccup nodded. "I left. I left because I'm no Viking. The Viking gods hold no meaning to me, I was treated worse than a slave by own people; my father included. And... and I'd be executed for treason for befriending Toothless." Hiccup said while gesturing to the Night Fury, who was still towing the Saxons ship.

Suddenly Hiccup, could make out an island off in the distance. It had nearly been a full day of flying and even Toothless was beginning to feel tired. He was very excited to meet the people of the West, as well as nervous to bring his "friend" along with him. Hiccup hadn't told the others about his fantasy, of a world where man and dragon could live in peace.

'Maybe if I'm lucky, I could teach them to train Dragons themselves' the boy thought to himself, 'I'll show these people just how misunderstood they really are.' He turned around to stare down at the three Saxons behind, proud to announce their progress.

"Irwin, I can see land west of here! It's a fairly large island, what is that?" Hiccup asked the big Saxon, he pulled out a telescope and laid eyes on the land and grinned at the sight.

"That my good man is the trading kingdom of Arendelle, I think you should give your friend a break!" The tall man laughed; "We'll arrive there in the morning, If we show up after dark, people might think it's a Dane night-raid." Hiccup was in no position to argue. Despite looking effortless, riding a dragon took a surprising amount effort and concentration, and the boy was exhausted. The rope Toothless was holding slackened as him and his rider slowed down, until the piece of wood they were dragging came to a halt in the water. Hiccup and his dragon landed gently on the makeshift raft and stretched out their limbs.

"Good to be on my two feet again." The boy chuckled, his back popping as he leant back to stare at the sky. "I've been meaning to ask you, what positions do you serve in the kingdom of Arendelle?"

Godfrey smiled at Hiccup's question and answered. "We're King Agnarr's elite guards, we were escorting grain to a village that these Berserkers raided, when we delivered the food, the lord that accompanied us was killed and our group of twenty fell to just Irwin, Edgar and myself." The other two Saxons faces fell lightly, Hiccup understood them perfectly. Brothers in arms losing their fellows in battle. These three were fortunate to flee the Berserkers fury in one piece.

"Well, you have my condolences." Hiccup said in a genuine tone, the three nodded at him in thanks, the group had a small meal with what food was available, Toothless was kind enough to dive in the waters and return with a mouthful of fish, the Night Fury cooked the fish for the humans, while Toothless just stuffed his face in. After a satisfying meal of bread and cooked fish, the four men had further conversations about each others homelands, their faiths and many other things, finally the sun dipped under the horizon, sending Irwin and Godfrey to fall asleep, leaving just Hiccup and Edgar to talk amongst themselves.

"You don't feel like sleeping? Its been a long day." Hiccup said to Edgar while pointing toward the other males who were out cold, Edgar snickered at the two men sleeping and then looked back to Hiccup.

"Not really, besides, I'm more of a stay up late and sleep in kind of guy." Edgar said as he scooted closer to a makeshift fire they made. Hiccup was having the time of his life, so far, these three men treated him with more respect then Berks people ever did in fifteen years! Hiccup hadn't felt kindness like this since his mother was yet of this world.

Gods, Hiccup missed his mother so much, had the woman survived, Stoick might have actually been the father he was supposed to be. But since Hiccup's mother was killed, Stoick didn't treat him like a son. Instead he treated Hiccup like a plague.

"Hiccup? You alright?"

The auburn haired boy snapped out of his thoughts and nodded at Edgar's question. "I'm fine. Sorry for zoning out there." Hiccup mumbled as he exhaled heavily and leaned against Toothless, who was asleep as well. Hiccup decided to ask Edgar some questions, he had told the Saxons everything about him, it seemed fair to ask his new companions.

So, you know about me, yet I don't know too much about you. What's your story?"

"Nothing all that important, if I'm honest. I was orphaned at age three; I live alone in one of the smaller houses at Arendelle."

"Orphaned?" Hiccup repeated, wide-eyed "Gods Edgar, I'm so sorry. I assumed Irwin was your father or something." The boy remembered the pain and suffering he had to endure when he realized what had happened to his mother. He could only imagine the grief Edgar felt to have both his parents leave him forever.

"Its okay, Hiccup, and you aren't the first person to think that." Edgar replied, staring at Irwin with a slight smile. "He's a good man. Ever since my parents died he's been there for me— he basically adopted me until I was twelve."

"And when was that exactly..?"

"Three years ago, I'm fifteen now. How old are you?"

"Me too, I'm sixteen on the third day of spring." Hiccup grinned back at the dirty blond haired boy. He never really had any human friends, besides Gobber and Sigurd, but Edgar was easy-going and great company to say the least. "What's a guy like you doing out here fighting Berserkers?"

"Well it's not like my parents are gonna say otherwise?" Edgar raised an eyebrow, before lowering his voice to a whisper, "I thought I was ready to take the heathens on. Those... people took my parents life and I was determined to avenge them and everyone else they slaughtered." Edgar said, he flung his hands in the air, gesturing to the empty sky and open waters that surrounded them. "Now look what I've gotten myself into." He said bitterly, Hiccup heard Edgar's voice crack as he finished the last sentence, it was obvious that he was still traumatized about the events of facing the Berserkers.

"Hey there, none of this is your fault. Nothing could have prepared you for something like this." Hiccup shuffled closer to him and placed a hand on the Saxons shoulder. "Look, I don't know you all that well. But what I do know is that you're one strong person to have made it this far. We're going to get to Arendelle, and everything will be fine, I swear on it."

"T-Thanks, Hiccup." Edgar let out a short sniff, before brushing his dirty blonde hair out of his face. "I'm grateful at least someone is willing to talk to me."

"Right back at ya." Hiccup grinned sheepishly, taking his hand off Edgar and bringing them closer to the fire. The auburn haired boy could hardly believe himself: here he was, chatting confidently to someone who didn't consider him weak or useless.

If only his ex-tribe could see him now, their reaction would be priceless.

"So how'd you meet 'Toothless? He seems pretty friendly for a dragon." Edgar looked over Hiccup's shoulder to admire the sleek beast, almost invisible under the night sky. "I must admit, this isn't exactly how I imagined meeting my very first dragon."

"Yeah, about that..." Hiccup sighed, embarrassed to tell the Saxon boy his story of how he met Toothless. "I shot him down one night, with a machine I made."

"You shot him? Well that isn't a good way to meet a friend." Edgar shook his head and chuckled. "You captured him I guess?"

"Not quite. Nobody believed me when I said I shot him down. I went searching in the woods the next day and found him all tied up in the bola I launched. I planned on killing him and prove to my father that I was a Viking like him." Hiccup's shoulders sagged as he remembered the events that felt like a lifetime ago. "But, when I was about to, I just..."

"...you just couldn't do it, huh?" Edgar finished, "You realized you weren't one of them, and that you were better than them."

"Exactly, he didn't deserve to die. I looked into his eyes and I saw fear-I saw myself." Hiccup said as he stroked Toothless's head, causing the dragon to purr contently.

"I'm glad you didn't kill him Hiccup, and I'm sure he is as well." The Saxon boy replied, this time placing a hand on Hiccup's shoulder. "It's clear that you're a better person than any of the people on Berk." Hiccup looked into his deep into hazel eyes.

"Thank you, Edgar." He smiled, lying onto his back and staring up at the sky. "I think I'll try to get some sleep. I wanna look good when I enter your Arendelle, don't I?"

"Yeah, I agree." Edgar laughed back at him "I'll see you in the morning, Hiccup."

"You too, Edgar." Hiccup leant against the sleeping Night Fury, letting its body heat keep him warm in the cold air.

(Following morning)

"Hiccup! Hiccup wake up!!"

Said boy woke up to Irwin's voice, both boy and Night Fury yawned from their slumber to see them approaching the harbor of the massive trade kingdom of Arendelle. There were trader ships docked, soldiers patrolling the harbor and fisherman trying to gain a catch of the day. Irwin ran to the front of their ship and waved out to the nearest solider.

"OI! Little help here!!"

The solider grabbed a coil of rope and threw it toward Irwin, the big Saxon man caught the rope and urged the others to ready themselves while the soldiers on the harbor pulled the battered ship into the harbor. Hiccup laid eyes on citizens bowing down toward a family in royal attire, and they were approaching the harbor.

This must be the king and queen Sigurd told him of. The auburn haired boy laid eyes on a girl who had strawberry blond hair, she had her hair done in two front braids, she wore a long sleeve green dress with some brown and black stripes at the skirt.

The girl was drop dead gorgeous.

"My good man Irwin! Thank God you've returned safely! We were just about to—" The king spoke, but when he laid eyes on Hiccup and Toothless, his eyes went wide with surprise, shock, and fear, as was everyone else's reactions toward Hiccup and Toothless. However, Irwin vouched for the duo. "Worry not your majesty, these two mean us no harm. In fact, they came out of nowhere and saved us from being lost at sea."

King Agnarr turned to Hiccup and raised an eyebrow at the boy. "Is this true? You saved them when they were in need?" He asked firmly, all eyes turned to Hiccup, and the boy nervously rubbed the back of his neck, he cleared his throat and answered the king. "Yes. Yes your majesty, that is what happened." Hiccup said so that all could hear him, Iduna approached her husband and whispered in his ear, when the queen withdrew, Agnarr turned back to Hiccup.

"You have our gratitude for saving sons of Arendelle... my apologies, what is your name my dear boy?" He asked, Hiccup ran a hand through his auburn hair and cleared his throat. "Hiccup. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III."

Hiccup saw both the girls behind the king and queen stifle their giggles, while the soldiers and citizens around them laughed at such an... odd name. But when the king sent a glare toward his subjects, all laughter immediately died down and Agnarr turned back to Hiccup. "Again, you have my thanks... Hiccup Haddock, but unfortunately, we do not know if you are a threat to us, so you and your... beast will be locked in the jail for the night until myself, the queen and our kingdoms council wish to question you further." Agnarr said, he then turned to the soldiers to take the duo to the jail.

Hiccup swallowed thickly. He turned to Toothless and whispered in his dragons ear. "Don't fight them bud, or we'll be killed on the spot. Just listen to them and we'll be fine." Toothless growled in great displeasure but nodded at his rider.

(Later that morning)

As Hiccup was pacing back and forth in his cell, he turned to Toothless who was glaring at him, the boy shrugged at his dragon. "What?" He asked, the Night Fury growled at him while rolling his eyes, but Hiccup approached his friend. "Hey, you heard Sigurd bud, our destiny lies here and beyond these lands! Though the old man didn't say we'd be welcome by everyone with open arms."

::Terrific. If these people wish to inflict harm on you or me? I will release my righteous fury upon them::

Hiccup blinked in confusion at the sound of that... voice. He looked around and then back at Toothless. "Uh, bud? Did you just... speak?" He asked, Toothless cocked his head and hie pupils turning into big orbs.

::Did... did you just hear me?::

Both dragon and rider stared at each other for ten seconds before Hiccup chuckled in disbelief. "I-I can understand you! Thats incredible!" The boy said excitedly, Toothless got and wagged his tail with happiness, the dragon playfully tackled his rider and Hiccup groaned at the contact of the stone beneath him and Toothless's paws on his chest.

"Ah! So you wish to fight me?" Hiccup said playfully, Toothless snickered and was gently hitting his rider with his paws, while Hiccup covered his face with his arms and threw playful punches at his dragon. "Argh! Bring it on you beast!" Hiccup said playfully as Toothless dodged some of his playful punches, the dragon then sat on Hiccup's body; knocking all the air out of the boys lungs.

Before Toothless can gloat in "defeating" his rider, the echo of footsteps reached both Hiccup's and Toothless's ears, causing him to stand up and walk up to the bars. It had been just over an hour and Hiccup hoped that by now this whole ordeal had been sorted out. The footsteps became louder and clear, until a soldier walked out in front of his cell

"I've been ordered to lead you to the main hall. The leaders of our kingdom would like to question you." The soldiers voice was gruff yet held a hint of fear, most likely due to the large snarling dragon behind the boy. "The dragon will be remaining here, no harm will come to him." Toothless continued to growl, furious at the idea of his rider being alone.

"Its okay bud, I'll be fine." The boy reassured, watching the guard open the rusty door and lead him out to his inevitable judgment.

(Arendelle's council chambers)

Hiccup found himself inside of a huge room, even larger than the Greaf Hall of Berk. There were at least three hundred people in the room with him, every single one watching him with utmost curiosity. Edgar, Godfrey and Irwin stood alongside two elderly men, who sat upon tall chairs at the very back of the hall. The soldier escorted Hiccup to the very center of the room where he stood on a small podium, so that everybody had a view of him. The elder on the left raised his hand and signaled for quiet. Any and all conversation in the room stopped, nobody dared to interrupt somebody of such a high social standing.

"Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. We welcome you to the trading kingdom of Arendelle. Our kingdom is the but the tip of the spear of our nation of England. We supply all of England with food, weapons, and other resources needed to face the hordes of Viking and Dane armies that threaten to consume us." A royal elder said, he then interlocked his fingers together and cocked his head at the boy. "What is your purpose here?" The elder demanded.

Hiccup swallowed and took a deep breath; calming his nerves before speaking out.

"I was... led here." Was Hiccup's response, the people gathered murmured in confusion, Queen Iduna leaned forward and asked. "Led here?" Can you care to elaborate?" Hiccup bowed his head at the queen and clarified. "A seer in my former tribe-"

"Seer? What is a seer?"

An elder interrupted, Agnarr shot the elder a glare, causing the elder to look away and the king nodded at Hiccup to explain what a seer is and what he meant by being led to Arendelle.

"A seer can be male or female. They practice sorcery and use... unnatural methods and means to take a glimpse of the unseeable future." Hiccup said, the lords, nobles, elders and the royal couple had faces of displeasure and began murmuring amongst themselves.

"Devilry."

"Such vile creatures these Vikings and Danes are."

"Only God knows the future, man cannot know if there will be a following day or if you live to see the next day."

Agnarr silenced all the nobles, lords, and elders murmurs and looked at Hiccup. "So, you're telling us that you're here because... a seer gazed into the future and told you to come here?" All eyes turned to Hiccup, the boy cleared his throat and nodded at King Agnarr. "Yes Lord." Hiccup saw Agnarr nod in understanding, Queen Iduna once again spoke up. "Tell us Hiccup. Why did you save these men?" She asked while gesturing to Irwin, Godfrey and Edgar. "You could have easily abandoned them and let them die out at sea." She said, Hiccup nodded in agreement but answered her question.

"I saved these men because it was the right thing to do Lady. And because... because I knew I wouldn't live with myself if I let those men die of dehydration or hunger out at sea." Hiccup said with genuine care, that shocked the whole room, except the three souls Hiccup and Toothless saved. One of the nobles spoke up over the others in the room.

"Why should you care about them? Or any of us? You're a heathen!"

Many grunted in agreement, Hiccup however stood his ground, he was detrained to prove to these people that he wasn't loyal to Viking nor Danish people, and that he was never one of them to begin with. So he decided to reveal his life's story.

"I saved those men because... if I were Viking? I would've had my dragon sink their already damaged ship and let them be a feast for sharks." Hiccup said firmly at the noble, he then turned to Agnarr and Iduna. "My "people" never saw me as a Viking. In fact due to my... lean physic, they saw me as a weakling, as sickly, as a fishbone. I was blacksmith, I made all their weapons and still I received no thanks or recognition for my work from them. I've been beaten to a bloody pulp many times, I was humiliated, scorned, rejected and... nearly raped by my cousin."

Gasps filled the room at the mentioning of the word rape. The lords, nobles, elders, and royal family shook their heads, placed a hand over their mouths and turned green at the hearing of this. Hiccup still remembered Snotlout slapping him around like a common whore, and it made Hiccup burn with rage. But he kept his temper under control and continued his story.

"My life on Berk was miserable, that is until I met Toothless, my dragon. He saved me from taking my own life, Toothless made me feel loved, strong, and unashamed of the friendship we forged." Hiccup said with a light smile on his lips, he then looked directly into Agnarr's eyes. "My Lord, I know you don't know me, but I know one thing. I was destined to be here. I'm a good blacksmith, I can fight; I can teach your men how to defend themselves and how to stand against the Vikings and Danes you face, and I... I'll renounce the Viking gods."

Everyones eyes widened hearing this, Agnarr felt his wife grasp his shoulder and whisper into his ear, the king nodded at his wife and then turned back to Hiccup.

"Well then, Hiccup Haddock, if you wish to prove to us all that you want to help us, fight for us, and live among us, then you shall do all the things you've sworn to do. You may work in our blacksmith, teach my army how to fight the heathens, and you will renounce all pagan gods and be baptized into the Christian faith." Agnarr said firmly, the king rose, and gestured to Hiccup. "See to it that he's prepared for baptism and when it is done? Escort him into my home and give him a room with his dragon."

Hiccup released a breath he didn't even know he was holding. They were giving him a chance! And he'd be damned if he'd turn back on his word or throw this opportunity away.

"This council is dismissed." Agnarr boomed out, the lords, nobles and elders bowed before the king, queen and princess before taking their leave. Hiccup stepped down and saw Irwin, Godfrey and Edgar take their leave too, they turned to Hiccup and smiled at him in congratulations, Hiccup smiled back at them and nodded in thanks.

"Hiccup, a moment please." Agnarr said, Hiccup approached the king, he smiled lightly at the boy and gestured to his family. "This is my wife Queen Iduna." Hiccup turned to Iduna, the woman was 5'9, had brown hair, and blue eyes. She wore a silver crown in her hair and wore a long sleeve purple and black dress. Hiccup nodded in acknowledgement to Queen Iduna. "Lady. I promise you and your husband that you will not regret this decision." Hiccup said with confidence, the queen nodded at the boy and replied back. "We shall see my boy."

Agnarr then gestured to their younger daughter. "And this is Princess Anna, our youngest daughter." Hiccup and Anna look into each others eyes and smile warmly at each other. "Lady." Hiccup said in respect, he bowed his head at her, and Anna smiled at the boy and  nodded in acknowledgment to him, Agnarr then added. "We also have our oldest daughter Elsa. She's three years older than Anna, but because of some... issues, she's been advised to keep her distance from people and her sister. Regrettably." Hiccup turned to Agnarr and nodded in understanding, the boy wondered if he would ever meant this Elsa.

Suddenly, a bishop approached the group and bowed his head toward the royals. "Your majesty. Is this the one who is to be baptized in our faith?" He asked referring to Hiccup, Agnarr nodded in confirmation. "Yes, Hiccup this is Bishop Joshua. He's also a warrior bishop and one of our greatest warriors." Agnarr said with pride, Joshua turned to Hiccup and nodded at the boy in greeting, Hiccup did the same. "Come then my boy, let us welcome you into our faith." Joshua said, Hiccup nodded and followed the bishop outside.

(Hiccup's pov)

I was shirtless and wore nothing but my leather pants, one the shore of the pond just outside the kingdom, I could see Agnarr, Iduna, Anna and handfuls of soldiers, nobles, lords, and Irwin, Godfrey and Edgar. I could see Toothless sitting by the pond and cocking his head at me in confusion.

::What is it that they're going to do to you Hiccup?::

Toothless asked, I mouthed at him 'watch and see.' Joshua's voice caused me to turn towards the man. "Before being received into God's holy church, you must renounce your former errors, ways, and beliefs." He said with a gentle yet firm tone, I inhaled and exhaled slowly. I had born a Viking, been taught how to be a Viking since I was boy, and was taught that the gods of Asgard are the only true gods, but... if these gods are all powerful, then why did they abandon me to live amongst people who hated me for being me?

I'm not one of them.

"I renounce my beliefs in the Viking way. In Odin and all other pagan gods." I said firmly and with confidence, Joshua approached me and cupped both my cheeks with his hands and breathed on my forehead, causing me to close my eyes and look down at the waters beneath me. "With my breath, I do exorcise the evil spirits that dwell in you." He then took hold of me and dipped me into the waters below, as I was submerged, I could hear Joshua speak out. "Heavenly Father, receive Hiccup Haddock as your servant on this Earth and into the Holy Kind of Saints and into the ranks of the most bright angles."

As Joshua continued, I began to picture what my father, Astrid, Berk and every Viking I ever knew would think of me if they saw me being baptized into the Christian faith. I could hear my fathers enraged voice.

"You're an even bigger disgrace than I could have ever imagined!! You're not a Viking! You're not my son!!"

I could see Astrid bringing her battle axe to my throat and snarl menacingly at me.

"You would renounce the true gods?!! You're a pathetic waste of human life! And I hope Odin will strike you dead for this treachery!!"

I only smiled though, because in truth? He didn't care what they thought of him. He was no Viking. And he never will be, not after this, not that I wanted to be a Viking anyway, all I ever wanted was to be accepted for who I am.

"Let your holy waters cleanse him and make him worthy of your blessing! Make him your instrument and your rod. Let him realize the significance of the written word, so that he may learn of your glory, and in turn spread your word to all people of every nation and tongue. Amen."

I was then raised up and saw everyone gathered clap at what had just taken place here, Joshua then grabbed a towel and wrapped it around me and smiled at me. "Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, welcome into the Christian World." He said, I ran a hand through my soaked hair and looked up at Agnarr, Iduna and Anna, they all smiled warmly at me and I returned their smile, I turned to Irwin, Godfrey and Edgar, they grinned at me and continued clapping, I then turned to Toothless and he cocked his head at me.

::So, they bathed you?::

Toothless asked, I chuckled lightly and shrugged at my dragon, he rolled his eyes and I approached the shore, when I exited the water, I finished drying off with a smile on my face.

I am no longer Hiccup the Useless. But Hiccup of Arendelle.

"Hiccup!"

I turned around to see Anna. "Princess." I bowed my head in respect, she giggled lightly and then gestured to the kingdom. "We're about to be served noon day meal, would you like to join us?" She asked in a hopeful tone, I stared into her beautiful eyes and could literally see the hope swimming in them. How could I say no to her?

"I'd love to." I said, Anna smiled widely and as I finished placing fresh tunic on, Anna led me to back the kingdom, I whistled for Toothless and couldn't believe where my life was right now.

If only Berk saw me now.
