Chapter 2
Trigger warning, mild homophobia
Hayden woke up to the sound of someone pounding away on the front door.
"Joey, I know that youre home!"
Joey scrambled over to open the door revealing Haydens mother, Harriet in rage.
"Harriet? What's wrong? Is everything okay" Joey spoke.
Harriet didn't say a word, she rushed right pass Joey, heading up the stairs in search of Alexis's room, flinging the door wide open. Hayden rose from the bed with sheer panic in her eyes.
"MOM WHA-"
before Hayden could complete her sentence, Her mother grabbed a hold of her wrist, dragging her down the stairs into her car.
Alexis was half awake when she stumbled down the stairs joining her father who was as just as confused.
Hayden was shoved into the front seat of the vehicle.
Not knowing what to do and assuming it was her mother just throwing a fit, Hayden stayed quiet and watched her best friend fade away into the rear view mirror.
"Mom..." Hayden called out, but her mother ignored her. She assumed they would be heading home so she relaxed further into the seat.
Hayden sighed while looking over to the backseat and saw that clothes were messily hanging out of suitcases. Panic came over.
"MOM WHERE ARE YOU TAKING ME" Hayden yelled fearing the worse. Noticing they weren't going in the direction of their house.
"You'll know when we get there" her mother mumbled, barely audible as she locked the doors of the car.
Hayden observed her mother.
The way her knuckles gripped the steering wheel, her tired eyes that reflected frustration. Hayden wondered what her life would be like if her mother would just understand.
She just kept her focus on the road not paying any attention to Hayden.
Hayden gazed through the window until her mom pulled up to an enormous building.
The walls were of bright orange brick, red and white roses lead a path to a yellow banner hanging at the entrance. It appeared to be a school or some sort.
St. Marys Institute was written in bold black letters.
Hayden exited the car, taking in her new surroundings. Harriet joined her daughter while holding three unorganized suitcases by her side.
"Welcome to your new home" Harriet smirked.
"What" Hayden's face fell as she heard her mother's next words.
"No daughter of mine will be a sinner Hayden! I WILL NOT ALLOW IT" Harriet shouted.
"This is place for you to learn how to be normal" her mother spat with venom.
Hayden opened her mouth but couldn't find the words. She was in shock.
A mid aged man suddenly came up to them, he was taller than the two of them. His smile reached his ear as he greeted them both.
"Welcome to St Mary's, Im assuming you're Ms. Musk? The Architect who was having some..... Unnatural troubles with her daughter? The man asked.
"Yes, of course I am Harriet and this is my daughter Hayden" she said as she followed the man down the path.
"Yes, of course I am Hayden, the spawn of the devil, here to slay all men" Hayden mocked but not loud enough for anyone to hear.
"Well Im Immanuel Hudson Co-founder of St. Mary" said Immanuel.
"Well whos the other?" Harriet asked.
"My wife Theresa" he smiled politely.
Hayden stared daggers into his head. There was something about him that rubbed her the wrong way.
Immanuel leaned over to Hayden.
"Do you know what this place is Hayden?" he asked.
"If I did, do you think I would be here Hudson?" she rolled her eyes while crossing her arms.
Immanuel spoke
"I created this place when I was just your age.... I had these impure thoughts about my best friend Ezekiel, I always imagined myself running my fingers down his chest" Immanuel cringed.
"I expressed how I thought I felt about him in the locker room, he shoved me away and made a scene, soon everyone in our school eventually found out and so did my parents.... They reacted as expected, my mother especially took it hard. Every Sunday she made sure I attended church, both morning and noon" Immanuel took a breath before continuing.
"I studied the bible front to back, then I realized... Perhaps I only wanted to be him...to be popular. It felt like a door opened, I trained myself to get rid of these nasty impure thoughts" Hayden furrowed her brows. It made no sense.
"We at St Mary's, guide our students onto that path, so they'll realize their sins and turn to our protector for forgiveness" she was already within the campus when Immanuel finished his bullshit story.
"You'll realize what it is that's stopping you from being a proper christian" He smirked. Harriet took one last look at her daughter, hoping this fixes her daughter.
Hayden could not believe the ignorance of this man. She watched as her mother left. No goodbye, no hug, she just left. Hayden felt a ping in her heart. She felt abandoned, unwanted and scared.
Immanuel lead her into the huge building.
Hayden slowly walked behind, her eyes trailed over to the courtyard where the students were gathered together having lunch. There were sculptures among the grass, some of what appeared to be angels.
After climbing many stairs and receiving stares from everyone, they finally arrived to the dorm room, Immanuel set down her bags.
"You should get changed and go to the Cafeteria, supper is about to be served and don't be late" He said sternly as he left. Yikes.
Hayden could not believe she was here, she never imagined her mother going to such levels because of her beliefs.
Tears filled the rim of Hayden's eyes as she thought about her life. It was all so overwhelming. She was watching movies with her best friend and received the most heart whelming hug just hours ago. Now she was in an illegal institution ran to convert her into what they think is normal.
A relationship of a man and a woman. Perhaps the man being the head of the household and her being the housewife who cooks, cleans and shoots out babies like bullets.
If this was the start of her new life, Hayden decided to live it the way she wanted to. No more crying, no more hiding, she will be the real Hayden. What else did she have to lose?
She took a shower and walked over to the suitcases. There was a sudden knock on her door.
Still fresh out the shower, Hayden opened the door, still in her towel.
To her surprise, there was a gorgeous girl standing in front of her.
"Um hi?" Hayden asked
"H-hi Im Maddison, the President of this Institute" the shorter girl held her clipboard closer as her eyes trailed over Hayden.
"Its my duty to welcome you and show you around... Whenever you're free that is" Maddison blushed.
"Sure just give me a second" Hayden smiled walking back inside. Maddison lingered by the door frame.
Hayden then went to her suitcase to find her favourite T-shirt, she discovered all of her black clothes weren't there, at the time she didn't take it for anything she just dragged on another shirt and sweatpants before heading to the cafeteria with Maddison.
She could see many students in uniforms, Hayden felt eyes burn into the back of her head as she stood there like a deer in headlights.
"Would you like to come sit with us?" Maddison asked.
"Yeah, sure" Hayden said.
As they walked over to the table Hayden overheard a few whispers from the girls she sat with.
"I didnt know that I was this fascinating to talk about, please continue" Hayden said with a smug smile on her face.
She looked at them as if waiting for them to continue but there was just silence.
Thats when Maddison intervened and changed the subject.
"Hi guys, this is Hayden Musk, she's a new student" She said as she looked at Hayden.
"These are my friends, Abeke, Danny, and my twin sister Morgan" She said while pointing to them.
Maddison's friends all scooted down awkwardly to make space so that Hayden can sit but she just got something to eat, walked to another table and sat by herself.
A few minutes passed then students just started getting up and sitting down at Hayden's table.
"Hi, I'm Jade" a short girl with dark purple streaks in her hair said as she puts her hand out to be shaken. She was gorgeous.
"Hi Jade, I really am having the worse day of my life today, I'm really not in the mood to talk to anyone. Bye Jade"
Hayden replied as she got up, walked away and headed to her dorm. Rude.
Hayden continued to unpack her stuff, she noticed that there was another bed in the room that was vacant. The dorm was surprisingly big, it had a wide hall and two separate bedrooms.
Hayden's eyes widen as she realized her phone and laptop was inside of her suitcase. Maybe her mother didn't realize she threw it in when she suddenly make the decision to send her daughter to hell.
She immediately texted her best friend.
Hayden♥: you will not believe what happened to me today
A minute went by before Alexis replied
Alexis💦: dude where the fuck are you? I've been worrying all day, your mom won't talk to me
Hayden ♥: I'm at this place, I'm not sure what it is, I think it's kinda like conversion therapy? But in the form of a school? My mom literally just dropped me here and left. I can't believe it.
Alexis💦: Wait, what?,whats the name of the place?
Hayden's phone vibrated, alerting her that it's battery was low.
Hayden ♥: St. Mary's...anyways I have to go, the battery is dead and I'll be lucky to find a charger around here. If I die, tell my story.
Her phone blanked out after the message was sent. Hayden filled the last of her clothes into the draws and dragged her worn out body into bed.
Hayden had never been more unsure of what tomorrow held. But how worse could it possibly get?
