Chapter 9: Big Step (In a Way)
The hunt had been in for this man for two weeks. With out a real description, the police were having a difficult time finding him. All they had was a tattoo on his hand.
Naomi had been hanging out beside Jim as often as she good. Kayden and Sabina would come with occasionally. Jim and Kayden got along well, probably the personality similarities.
Naomi had other patients to tend to throughout the days. Jim appreciated his sorta girlfriend hanging out by him. Neither of you had discussed whether or not to call each other boyfriend and girlfriend. "How's my favorite patient?" Naomi asked, a cheering smile upon her face.
"Better now that you're here." Jim said, a cheeky smile plastered on his face.
"Cheesy line, but I still like you." Naomi said, checking the scanners attached to Jim. He was able to be off of most of them, there was just two that checked heart rate and breathing.
"That's good. C'mere, I want to talk to you." Jim said, smiling at her. Naomi set down the scanner and moved close to Jim. He pulled her into a kiss. They'd been doing that a lot.
"That wasn't talking." Naomi muttered, moving away. "Anyway, we've only gone on three dates. I don't roll that way."
"That's fine." Jim grumbled, teasingly crossing his arms. "I guess I'll live."
"Good." Naomi said, ruffling his hair. "You're discharged today. You have a choice, rent an apartment with me, as a nurse not as a girlfriend so we wouldn't honestly be living together, or rent an apartment with Bones. You can't be alone for a while."
"I'll rent an apartment with you. It's better that being with the grumpy doctor all day." Jim mumbled, rolling his eyes.
"You always say hurtful things right as I walk into the room." Bones said, pretending to be shocked. Jim still rolled his eyes.
"Can I be off of the stupid machines now?" He asked, tugging at one of the wires on his chest.
"Yeah yeah. Give me a minute." Bones grumbled, starting to take off the wires.
"We need to go apartment shopping. I'm thinking two bedroom, possible higher floor, security, and open space. What about you?" Naomi asked, getting excited.
"Two bedrooms?" Jim just asked. Naomi rolled her eyes.
"Yes two! I told you, only been on three dates. Anyway, if this doesn't work out, I'll just move back in with Sabina and you and Bones can have the apartment." Naomi said, still excited.
"Sounds good." Jim muttered as Bones jabbed a hypo in his neck. "OW! Those things hurt!" He yelled, rubbing his neck.
"I know. That's why I gave you one. Have fun you two." Bones mumbled before leaving the room.
"Let's go to my place and look for apartments on a PADD." Jim suggested. Naomi nodded and followed Jim back to his dorm room.
Despite not having a roommate, Jim's dorm was the size of Naomi and Sabina's. "Okay, there's an apartment just off of campus. Two bedroom, two bath, relatively big, but no security." Jim said, shrugging at the option.
"No, if there isn't any security we can't get it. Otherwise it's perfect." Naomi said, sitting on the bed.
Two hours had passed and they found nothing. At all. Naomi was laying on the bed, the top half of her body hanging off the end. Jim sat in a chair on the other side of the room, scrolling through a PADD. "This is boring." Naomi muttered for the hundredth time.
"Once again, I agree." Jim muttered, yawning. "I hate house hunting."
"You've never had to do it before!" Naomi exclaimed. Jim just shrugged in agreement and went back to looking.
"Aha, I found one. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, second floor, high security, and it's open space. In our price range." Jim said, his face lighting up. Finally, some of this boredom can be over. "It says we can just go to the building and look at it. No schedule date needed."
"Great! Let's go!" Naomi yelled, running out the door to get a cab. Jim followed in pursuit, he was just a little slower than her because of the stab wound.
"It's pretty great." Jim muttered, looking around the living room.
"Yeah, it is." Naomi said, looking into the bedrooms. Both of them were relatively big. The kitchen was in the living room. There was no place for a dining room table, so they'd have to eat on the couch.
"So when was, or is, the wedding?" The relater asked the two of you.
"No no no no no. We aren't, we aren't married. Or engaged." You and Jim start to stutter. "We just sorta know each other well."
"Oh, my apologies." She said.
"I think we'll take the place." Naomi said, smiling. Jim nodded and smiled at the relater.
"Okay. Just sign here and here." The relater said, pointing to places in a PADD. "I'll talk with the landlord, but that's just to let him know knew people are moving in."
"Thank you!" Naomi and Jim yelled in unison as the relater walked away.
"Oh my god." Naomi muttered, hugging Jim. The apartment came furnished, so all they'd need is clothes and other belongings. That could be done in a day.
"We have our own place." Jim muttered, sitting down. "This feels like it's going fast. Way too fast."
"It does. But remember, we aren't getting this apartment to live in together as a couple, it's so you aren't alone at night. Sure, that man could take me easily, but it'd give you a better chance to get away." Naomi reminded him, relaxing unto a chair.
"I agree. We should probably get packing." Jim said, getting up from the couch. "That is one comfy couch." He muttered before walking away.
Naomi looked around the room. This was her knew home; she loved it more than ever.
