[21] Picnic
After Vic arrived, all 5 of us got on Veritas car and slowly rode our way to the picnic location. And throughout the way, it was mainly me Rumble and Vic talking, while Veritas smiled and listened to us quietly, and Kuro just patting Biggy's belly on the side.
The picnic place is actually just located on the west side of IIMT, which is the elemental dorm part of the school. IIMT was built on an island 50 years ago, connected only by land through a bridge on the East side. The island is massive, stretching some 100km square, which makes it the largest school by area in the world. So it's no surprise the school literally has its own sky train system, ferry terminal and even a mini airport (which I haven't seen yet). Anyways, the elemental dorm of IIMT doesn't technically forbid humans from entering, but there is a kind of an unwritten rule humans are not allowed entry. Every time a human student tries to enter, the guard would ask a bunch of questions until the person attempting to get in gets annoyed or tired. And if any human attempts a forced entry, the guard won't hesitate to put you down with magic under 'security reasons'. The only possible way in is to be invited by an elemental, and even if a human gets in, they are generally frowned upon. But of course, if an elemental wants to enter a human dorm there would be no problem, and we humans are generally pretty friendly towards them. Out of all the elementals I met so far, they all either tried to kill me or found some other way to hurt me even deeper. The only exceptions so far is Lebi and Veritas. But then again, they're like humans, there are no absolute good or evil, just more or less good or bad.
We stopped briefly at the gate for a moment, then I saw the guard saluting us from inside the glass window, followed by the metal gate opening at once.
A few meters in, I could already see myself in a whole new world:
Medieval fantasy style building lined up the streets with roofs and walls colored and designed in their respective elements. Street lamps that were supposed to hold light bulbs held large multi colored crystals instead. The street changed from concreate to pattered marble slabs, each an art work of its own. I could see why some humans want to come in here, the view here is worth the magic beat down. Here the elemental students were no longer dressed in their uniform, but their preferred clothing, mostly human brands, but there were still a few out there on side walk wearing traditional elemental clothes that represented their elements (which I assumed so). After a total of 15 minute drive from start to finish, we finally arrived at our destination. One by one we climbed out of the car and embraced the long forgotten fresh air.
"This place is my own dorm." Veritas said, brushing aside her hair.
There in front of us, was a small cottage, with the sea as its canvas.
"Dang...You got this house all to yourself?" I couldn't help but point.
"Not quite. My maids live here as well. So not alone now." She said with a small smile.
Crazy rich Elementals...
"Now allow me to formally welcome all of you." She turned to all of us. "Welcome all, to my humble dwelling, I lady Veritas S. Aeolus will be your host for the day. And please make yourself at home, I would genuinely appreciate every moment that you treat yourself to my hospitality."
We all just stood there, speechless.
Too formal...
And the aura of nobility made me feel to the point of being less significant than an ant. And it was those moments, I questions myself are we really even the same species?
No wait, she is already an elemental...
Seeing the nobility aura has gone too far, Veritas quickly cleared her throat:
"Apologies, a force of habit. My maid has finished preparing the picnic, now follow me." Veritas smile was like a gentle breeze, just glazing over the hearts of others, but never too forcefully.
In the backyard, the food was already lined up on the table. This is hardly a picnic, more like a feast if you can ask me. But good thing we brought Biggy along, so wasting food wouldn't be a concern.
"Feel free to sit wherever you want. And if you are hungry, you may begin."
"FOOD!" Vic and Rumble jumped up at once, and they were in their seats in less than millisecond with their heads buried in dishes like pigs who haven't eaten for a week.
"I-I don't know wh-at this is, but it's so DANG GO--OD!" Rumble said between bites.
"SPICYYYYY!!!" Vic yelled with mouth spitting literally fire. "BUT I LOVE IT!"
Those two...
Kuro and Biggy sat down as well, with Kuro taking small bites and feeding the rest to Biggy who seemed to be drowning in happiness. Knowing Veritas won't sit down, unless everyone has sat down first due to mannerisms, I quickly pulled up a chair as well, and looked for a pair of chop sticks, and surprisingly everyone had one.
"Have you tried elemental food before?" Veritas sat down next to me and smiled with closed eyes.
"A few times, but I figured the ones in Ayre are far from its original taste."
"In that case, I recommend the Fluffy cake. A traditional Wind elemental desert." " The fluffy cake looked like a miniature cloud the size of donut. And the moment Veritas fork touched the cake, it didn't go through like one would expect, but rather stuck right through like a solid object. She then held up her fork before me, as if expecting me to eat from it.
Wait...
She really is holding up for me to eat it...
I looked to the others, Vic and Rumble were still busy burying themselves with food, Kuro and Biggy were kind of in their own little world, one enjoying petting and the other one enjoy being petted.
Well, it's not like I dislike Veritas, rather quite the opposite...But it's just the way how she is holding up the cake for me is just embarrassing...
Then I met her gaze, and something told me, if I am not gonna eat that cake from her, she's not gonna drop her arm. So without further a due, I inched forward my head and ate the cake from her. There was a momentary blush from her.
CURSES! YOU'RE MAKING ME BLUSH AS WELL!!!
"How is the taste?" Veritas asked.
The cake had a sweet, but not too sweet, but just the right amount of sweet to it. It was cold, but not cold like ice cream, but rather cool. The texture was soft like cotton candy, instantly melting the moment it touched my tongue.
"It's...Good." I said honestly.
"I am very pleased to hear that it suits your tastes! I will make sure to make more of those next time." Veritas smiled gently.
That reminds me, I rarely seen her not smile around me...Almost to the point of unnatural...But then again, these are probably just the mannerisms of a nobility...
"You have quite the jolly and eccentric company it seems." Veritas commented.
"En...Yeah..." I didn't know how to follow up there.
"So do you mind sharing the past stories of how you met them?"
"Uhhh...Sure."
"The first one I met is Isa. This was over a year ago, two Pingu's attempted to rob Stardelight of its drink's and one of the main culprit is sitting right across to you."
Veritas let out a giggle.
"You don't believe me?" I added in.
"No, no. It's just similar things have happened back in the elemental kingdom. Where Pingu's would rob fish markets, but I never heard them robbing a coffee shop before..." another giggle escaped from her.
"Huh...Well, going on with the topic, Isa saved me from that whole mess. And it turns out she was actually assigned personal trainer. And from that day on, she began drilling me like a demon from hell."
Her giggles stopped. Her face was replaced with a slightly more stern expression, like a gathering storm on the horizon.
"So Kard...What do you think of her?" Her voice was still soft, but with a wisp of cold air mixed in it.
"What do you mean by, what I think of her?" I scratched my head.
The air around me grew thicker, the voices around grew more distant, even the sight of my teammates began to disappear, which I assumed was just my eyes playing tricks on me.
"Umm...She's always really strict and stern, and quite harsh sometimes. But I know she's doing it in the best of my own interest to help me become stronger. She even saved my life once, and she is like a mentor figure towards me. So...I really respect her for that."
The air around me grew light again, and the voices and sight were restored to normal again.
What just happened?...
"I see. That's good." She nodded gently.
"Now that I asked once about your personal story, it's only fair if I let you ask one of mines."
"Really? Are you sure?"
"Of course. I would love to tell them."
"Then..." I had this question buried in my head for a long time, but I didn't think I would ever have the opportunity to ask it, given the difference between the social status.
"I...I don't understand why..." I gulped, but continued: "You are an elemental, and a nobility on top of that. Almost all the elementals I meet so far have been very contempt or distrust towards humans. Why do you still choose to be friendly towards me? Wouldn't that effect your status?"
"Thank you for your consideration, but it's alright, I am used to people talking behind my back. And for the reason why I am friendly to your kind...This is a story from a long time ago...It's a little long, but you wouldn't mind right?"
"Not at all." I leaned forward closer.
"Very well." Her lips form into a small smile.
Q: Have you met any high profile person IRL before?
