CHAPTER 27

Taking a spoonful of her strawberry parfait, Kana look around the café that Zora recommended. In front of the man itself is a cup of coffee.

Turning over the red-haired man, she watches him put four cubes of sugar into his drink and took a sip of it.

Kana can feel Muku squirming inside her robe, wishing that he can come out of his hide spot. She pats his head apologetically since there are few other customers in the café, which meant that he needs to stay hidden, making him whine.

"So, what do you think?" Zora asks, earning the girl's attention.

"Of what?"

"You know?" He waves his hand dismissively. "Partnering with me."

"Oh." Her mouth is forming 'o' shape remembering his earlier suggestion. "Before that—I want to know, why do you hate magic knights so much?" She asked and took a spoonful of her dessert.

Zora looks in thought as he leans back and folds his muscly arms against his bare chest. "Hmm, feel like I'm in a job interview."

The fire magic user shrug. "I assume that you already know about my reasoning; it would be fair if I know yours."

She waits patiently while eating her parfait for him to talk. The girl knows that he has a hard time talking about his reasoning. She was just rather curious about why he hates the magic knights and even brave enough to beat the crap out of a few of them.

"Ah~" Zora sigh loudly. "Well, since you are kind of cute-"

Kana raises her eyebrows, putting down her spoon after taking the last bite of her now finished desert. She watches him scratches the back of his neck, noting that he's feeling uncomfortable about what he's about to say.

"If you don't want to-"

He raises his hand, stopping her from finishing her words. "No. You were right. Partners need to trust each other, and it's not fair if I'm the only one who knows about you."

He sigh. "My father. He was a magic knight." He starts.

Muku, who can feel the sudden change of atmosphere, took a peek. Kana raise the hood of the robe, allowing for the little beast to rest his head over her shoulder while they focus their attention on the other redhead. The girl was curious over the word 'was,' but she let him tell the story instead of her intercepting.

"You know, he was the first commoner who manages to join the magic knights." He flashes her a proud smile. "Even though he keeps failing the tests, he keeps on trying until he finally accepted."

His smile instantly disappears. "He got accepted into the Purple Orca's squad." Zora clenches his fist so tight that his knuckle turns paler than his skin. "Of course, being the only peasant he is, the other wasn't so accepting. One day he was killed in battle during a mission. One day I visited his grave only to find a few of his squad mates have come to visit. They--"

The hood shadows kana's eyes; she keeps her mouth shut and watches the man's eyes flash in rage.

"They said that—that he was actually attacked when he was trying to save some commoners. They killed him— only because he always helps his fellow peasants." His last words lace in venom, remembering how they laugh and dismissively mocked his father's death. He grits his teeth in anger, his eyes flash red, feeling the rage bubbling inside of him just like when he first found out about it.

A soft sniff reaches his ears, making him blinks few times and raise his head only to gape at the sight in front of him. The ed haired girl who seems cocky and cold now has stray tears falling down her face.

The poor young beast was panicking and trying to reassure his companion for whatever reason for her crying.

Zora's eyes widen as he watches her sniff and wipes her eyes with the back of her hands.

"Sorry," Kana mutters, but he still can hear her. "I never thought that you're in so much pain." She sniffs.

"But your father—" She removes her hands off her eyes and looks at him, showing her red puffy eyes. "You must be so proud of him. As a fellow commoner, I want to thank your father. Without him, it may still be hard for commoners like us to join magic knights. But you know—" She smiles widely.

"He's like a hero, doesn't he?"

Still in awe, Zora froze in place, watching the girl wiping the tears off her face while trying to reassure her scaly companion that she's okay.

Ba-dump

'This girl—' Unnoticed by him, a soft smile creeps onto his face.

Kana pet Muku who finally eases up from her sudden emotional outburst jump feeling someone patting her head.

Turning around, she watches Zora smile softly at her. Unlike his cocky and confident smile, this smile feels genuine. As if he's thanking her for something.

Tilting her head in confusion, she asks. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." The ash magic-user smile even widely. "I think you just keep getting prettier."

"Huh?/Ku?"

-Later that night-

They spend hours talking about random matters and some of Zora's pranking stories that make her laugh so much that her stomach hurts before returning to the base.

Muku happily napping over his bed near the window, bathed under the moonlight while his human companion was sitting over the desk, writing some letters for those back at the church along with Asta and Yuno.

A few days ago, she received letters from Asta and Yuno on their first mission experiences. Asta's letters took her some time to be encrypted, but she managed to understand it after a while. Opposite to him, Yuno's message much simpler and neat.

They also included their first impression of their fellow squad's mates. Asta seems happy with his team as they all rather accepting and quite wilds as she assumes from reading how he passes the test of acceptance into the Black Bull, which she fully knows there no such things as a squad acceptance test.

Only magic knights' tests are needed, but she brushes it off, seeing that the Black Bull's members are quite the squad for Asta as they all as crazy as he is.

Yuno, however, was just telling her about his strict senior and his odd teammate, Claude Lunettes, and Mimosa Vermillion.

"Vermillion? That sounds familiar." The red-haired girl asks out loud.

"Ku~"

Turning over her little beast, she chuckles, watching him stretch and turning a few times before continuing his nap.

"What an odd ritual." She smiles, sighing.

After staring at Muku's sleeping form, she tilts her head in though. "Feel like I forget something? What could it be?"

-Somewhere in the city of Clover Kingdom-

Poor Ben Benfunk looks around the city in frantic manners. "Where the hell is she?! If they found out, I lose her—"

An image of his angry captain alongside vice-captain sends chills all over his body.

"Oi peasant!" Tears streaming down his face like a waterfall as he desperately called for his junior and took off in another direction.

Zora, who returned from buying his dinner for the night caught off guard by Ben running around frantically pass him like a madman. "What a weirdo?" He snorts and continues his journey, whistling.

-Back at the base-

"Whatever." Kana shrug, stretching her arms, and walk into the bathroom, getting ready to sleep.
