35. Do Or Die.
Jacob's POV:
Four words. One question. What is her problem?! How many times will she repeat the same old blunder and how many times do I have to save her?! It's my job to protect her, and I'm doing it, but that doesn't mean she toys with my emotions again and again! First, she comes to my place and sympathizes me. She doesn't even understand that I was pointing her! Second, she tells Lilac she loves someone else, not me! Third, she went straight in the woods after the In-Commands meeting to spy on them. Ugh, I seriously don't mind killing a few people right now. How dense can she be? How dense can someone be?
At this very instant, I am zooming in the woods, trying to find her and bring her back. I've been to the meeting place, but no sign of her. Where can she be? Near the rendezvous spot? No, I checked it. At the edge if the cliff? She'd never dare knowing they're near. So where? Think, Jake. Think. Bingo!
She should be spying on them at the rotten graveyard. I believe they were supposed to have their 'secret' meeting here. I believe it was Brown Steak who reminded Harold. He was pissed, and I have no clue why.
I saw someone peeking through the bush. From the other side, I could see a bonfire lit and a dead man's body lying, with a knife on his back. On the opposite side, were two people having a heated make-out session. I tip-toed to Selena, covered her mouth with my hand, and dragged her away from here. She tried to wiggle out of my grasp. My grip got tighter, and all of a sudden, she cut my hand with the blade.
"OUCH!"
"Wh- Jacob? What are you doing here?"
"I should ask you the same thing!"
She covered my mouth with her hands.
"Shh. They'll hear us. We're not far."
"Who's there?!"
Shit. Someone heard us.
"Run, Jake. Run!"
We both galloped to random places, trying to loose them. I kept looking back to check on them, and Selena kept tugging my hand. We stopped in the middle of nowhere. The voices were slowly getting clearer and clearer.
Selena knelt down and moved a bush aside.
"What are you doing?!"
"Get in there."
"Where?"
"Under the tree."
"Are you crazy? Rabbits go in there!"
"It's not a rabbit hole, you dumbass! I dug it myself in case of emergency. Get inside. Hurry!"
I slipped inside the tree. The bush she moved was a cover to hide the hole. It was cleverly dug. It had enough space for two people to stand.
"Good. Stay inside."
She turned around to run, but I grabbed her leg.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to climb a tree, or run. Don't come following me if I get caught."
"Say what now?!"
"It's for the best, Jacob. Let me go."
"Get inside."
"What?!"
"Come on. There's enough space. We won't get caught."
She turned her head side to side, calculating her chances.
"There's no other option. We don't have any time left."
She sighed.
"Get aside."
I stepped back. She slipped in. The voices were getting clearer and clearer by the time. Selena moved the bush to cover the hole.
"Keep quiet. Don't make a single sound."
She murmured ever-so-slightly. We both were stuck to each other. the hole wasn't big enough. I could practically feel her trembling from head to toe. I moved my arms around her and started rubbing her back lightly. She flinched, but relaxed. Our breaths were getting faster and faster with the sound of someone's footsteps.
"Come out now. I know you're here somewhere."
I instantly recognized that voice. Wilson.
"Come out or you'll be dead."
I looked down to Selena and she looked up to me. A magical thing happened. Our lips hovered over each other. I started blushing, keeping my gaze on hers. Her eyes were like blue crystals shining in the clear water. Even with a little light, I was able to see her eyes. Those eyes. Those mesmerizing eyes. Now's not the time to think, you asshole!
"I know you're in there."
Selena dug her face in my chest and clenched her fist that held the sleeves of my jacket. I hugged her tightly, never letting go. I felt a hand moving the bush aside, when another voice echoed.
"Sir! There's no one- what are you doing?"
The hand moved back in a jerk.
"Oh, I was just- I thought a rabbit- never mind. Did you find anyone? Any Talon who was out of bed?"
"Negative, sir."
"Interesting."
"Are you sure that you saw someone, sir?"
"Of course, I did. I know what I saw."
"Okay."
"Are you judging me?"
"No, sir."
"Good. Find them and bring them to me. We need to keep their mouths shut."
Wilson retreated. We both let out a breath we didn't know we were keeping.
"I'll check."
Selena pulled me by the hem of my shirt.
"Be careful."
"I will. Don't worry."
I peeked outside. There was no one around, not a single voice heard. I climbed out and helped her to climb out as well. She dusted her jeans.
"We should go asap."
"Agreed."
Dashing out of the woods, we finally saw our houses. I turned to Selena to talk to her, but she took the advantage and ran away. I needed to ask her why she was there, and what she heard. It was too late to do that. Very well, then.
I opened my door and laid flat on my bed, kicking my socks and sneakers out of my feet. Why was she there in the middle of the night? She was surely spying again, like she always does, like she has always done, but what was so important? What were they discussing that she got so desperate to hear? Whatever that was, was too important to be missed. That's why she went after ages, didn't she? She spied on most of the meetings, and I don't know how she always finds out the topic. It makes sense, though. If she's a spy, she'll have a good incognito resource by which she figures out everything, or is it the opposite? She can't work for any member of the organization, can she? She hates them. She doesn't even want to look at them. Buh, why hadn't I got the ability to understand the girl.
A siren was wailing and echoing around the base. A siren? For what? Oh no, oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no! This is bad. This is too bad!
