Part 10
Nafisa had Sanyukta's offer letter and three sets of uniform ready for her. Sanyukta went across to change into a dark pencil skirt and a smart pastel blouse that were tailored to fit, and also slipped into a pair of black shoes. At Vidushi's insistence she had her eyebrows threaded and waxing done for the first time before the wedding; and had found the experience so agonising she wondered how women subjected themselves to such torture routinely. Now that she had to wear a skirt for work she had no choice but to keep up with the vanity bit. She had already noticed that nobody else in the office wore a uniform, and she knew the reason why an exception had been made in her case. Harsh probably decided not to burden Anju with having to buy a brand new wardrobe in office wear for her daughter who was merely there as a summer intern. Anju rarely approached Harsh for any help and when she did this time, he made sure he would address the problem by engaging Sanyukta in constructive work that would alleviate her mother's anxiety.
Nafisa then took Sanyukta along to Randhir's office to let her witness the start of his business day, including discussing his schedule and meetings through the day. Unlike Harsh, who needed his black coffee served before he started to work Randhir merely used the electric kettle in the cabin to make himself some green tea. He then started with his morning meeting with the various section heads, introducing Sanyukta as a summer intern who would fill in for Nafisa after she proceeded on maternity leave. Mr Britto, an experienced staffer was assigned to guide Sanyukta on the job in Nafisa's absence. Everyone gave Sanyukta encouraging smiles during the round of introductions and she smiled back enthusiastically. Even if people noticed that it was unusual for a college kid to fill in for an executive assistant on leave nobody spoke. After the meeting everyone dispersed leaving behind only Randhir, Nafisa and Sanyukta.
Randhir had a brief discussion after which the women were about to leave the cabin when he asked Sanyukta to stay back for a minute. "Hey Mowgli, you look good in a skirt, seems like you had your legs waxed!" Randhir could not stop grinning as he ragged Sanyukta on her first day at work. "Stop calling me Mowgli, only my friends call me that. And for your information I hate waxing, just that I do not want you to blanch on seeing my primeval hairy limbs!" She bristled. "You do not have primeval hairy limbs, just a gentle peach fuzz. Don't forget I had no choice but to change your clothes, not just once but twice." He was on a roll. "How shameless of you to look!" She exclaimed. "How shameless of you to get pissed drunk and end up in my bedroom! If I kept my eyes closed while changing you it would have lead to groping, would you have liked that better?" He continued having fun. "Maybe, guess I'll never know! Now let me get to work if you are done pulling my leg!" She rushed out as she spoke the words, hardly realising what she had said may have sounded quite suggestive. Randhir continued to grin, mulling over her words, as both got back to work.
Nafisa ran Sanyukta through the diverse nature of business the Shekhawats dabbled in, they were into iron and steel, energy and communication, with their presence across the state. Sanyukta began to appreciate the complexity of managing multiple businesses with offices in Goa and Mumbai, with Harsh Shekhawat at the helm while Randhir divided his time between his education in Mumbai and the city office there. Nafisa briefed Sanyukta about the work that occupied her day at the office. Sanyukta grasped the clerical work quickly because it was the simplest to comprehend. These were routine tasks like managing the schedule for Harsh, receiving and making phone calls, setting meeting agendas, sending memos and receiving visitors. The rest included providing high-level administrative support to the boss, helping with market research, scheduling and managing meetings, etc. The more complex tasks would require Sanyukta to sit besides Nafisa for at least a week or two to manage them.
Sanyukta realised that the office had far more men than women. Almost all the women looked married and were plain to look at, with many years of experience unlike her. She knew Randhir would never speak to the others like he spoke to her, and she smiled shyly to herself. "Got a crush on him already?" Now it was Nafisa's turn to worry her. "As if!" She replied, blushing. "Cannot blame you. The Shekhawats are so good-looking and charming all the women here are crazy about them, no one quits work. But just so you know, Randhir may keep his distance from employees but is open to dating all other hot girls in town. And you don't want to have your heart broken so early to see him with them." Nafisa had said that in good humour. Sanyukta said nothing, she simply tried to focus on work. She was not going to admit to Nafisa that is how she had ended up becoming an intern in their office, because she had reacted on seeing Randhir with some of those girls in his parked car.
Just before lunch Randhir informed them that he was going out for a while and would be back soon. "You know, he does not have any meeting scheduled for this time. He's probably meeting a girl for lunch." Nafisa winked at Sanyukta who gave her a weak smile, having suddenly lost her appetite. Nafisa went on to the cafeteria for lunch while Sanyukta excused herself and stepped out of the building, the sandwiches still lying on her desk. She went for a walk around the block to clear her head, trying not to think about what Nafisa had told her. She called her mother, giving her feedback about her first day at work. Speaking to Anju made her feel much better and she stopped by the riverfront for a few minutes before turning around and returning to the office, expecting to eat alone.
Most employees were still out for lunch. Mindlessly she walked back toward her desk only to see Randhir there, digging into the packed sandwiches. "Hey, these are good, want some?" He asked her. "I thought you went out for lunch." She remarked, surprised to find him back so soon. "I am not as predictable as you think, now sit down and eat or I'll finish the lot." He offered, pouring them some chilled water. She sat down, nibbling her sandwich, still lost in thought. "Not bad for your first day, looks like you will soon compensate me for wrecking my car." He joked. "Then I'll be free to wreck it again!"She retorted, not to be outdone. "Be careful girl, or you'll make me do what you actually deserve, put you across my knee and spank you hard!" He smirked at her as he walked back into his cabin, wondering how long she was going to last working here.
