Chapter Forty Nine

"You're sure you want to do this?" Josh asked nervously.

"I'm positive, Joshie," Tyler said.

Josh sighed but nodded, grabbing onto the safety bar.

"Now which one is the gas?" Tyler asked.

"Oh my God, we shouldn't be doing this," Josh said.

"Pleeeeeease, Joshie? I have something really special planned for when I can drive you places but I have to be able to drive first."

Josh sighed. "The one on the left is the gas. DON'T step on it very hard. You don't even have to really step on it to go. But first you need to put it into neutral. So move that bar to where it has an 'N.'"

Tyler did as told, and soon enough, the boys were rolling slowly through the empty parking lot.

"This is easy!" Tyler exclaimed with an excited smile. "So easy!"

"Yes, baby, b-but you don't even have your hands on the wheel. And you're not looking at the road. Please, please don't wreck my brand new car. Pleeeeeease don't."

Tyler opened his mouth to say something before Josh reached over and quickly turned the wheel so they wouldn't run into a tree.

"Babe," he sighed.

"Well, Josh, maybe if you weren't so hot I could actually focus on driving!"

"Can we at least like... not do it in my brand new car?" Josh asked. "Please?"

"Ok," Tyler sighed.

"Yay," Josh said, letting out a breath of relief. "I'll teach you another day, baby. Promise."

"How long is another day?" Tyler asked. He was really, really excited for what he had planned, but he didn't think driving would be that hard.

Josh didn't know how to break it to him, but Tyler wouldn't legally be allowed to drive until never had to use the chair or the walker. And now, even though he was only in need of the chair or walker once or twice a week, he needed to be at a point where he was never in need of it.

His Tyler was just so... happy now. And he never wanted to take that happiness away from him. Driving and being able to be the one taking him out on dates. He'd never been the one 'taking' his husband out on the date, and he wanted to make the first time he got to really, really special.

"I um... I-I'm not sure."

"Can we do it soon?" Tyler asked hopefully.

Josh sighed, burying his face in his hands. "Can we go inside, baby?"

Tyler furrowed his eyebrows but nodded. He didn't really know why Josh seemed so... weird all of the sudden. But the boys switched spots and Josh parked back in the garage, walking inside together.

They sat down on the couch, Tyler siting criss-cross apple sauce facing Josh.

"What's up, Joshie?" He asked, leaning forward a bit and cupping Josh's cheek, kissing his forehead since he seemed kind of sad and nervous.

Josh sighed. Tyler was just making this harder by being so sweet.

It was hard for him to think about Tyler having been at a point where he contemplated his life only a year ago. And now, Tyler was happier than Josh had ever seen him before. He didn't want to take an ounce of happiness from him, but he also didn't want to lead Tyler on to thinking he'd be able to drive soon.

"O-ok," Josh said. "I guess uh... I don't really know where to start..." he said. "Here. Hold my hands."

Tyler smiled widely and nodded, sliding his hands into Josh's. He was so excited to hear what Josh had to say. Maybe he was suggesting they go on an exciting trip. Maybe he was surprising him with something romantic.

"So... I um... while you were gone, i-i did some research on um... on you being able to drive. A-and I made a lot of phone calls. A-and um... legally, u-until you don't ever use the chair or the walker, y-you can't get your license..."

"O-oh," Tyler said quietly.

"Y-yeah," Josh said softly. "I-I'm sorry, baby."

"I-it's ok," Tyler said, shaking his head. "I-it's just another reason to work harder at walking."

Josh was beyond confused. Why was Tyler making this seem kind of like a... positive thing?

"I-I'll just have to change a few things f-for what I was planning," he said. "B-but that's ok. W-we can still have fun."

Josh wasn't really sure of what to say.

"I-it won't be as... um... s-special a-as I was really wanting, b-but it's ok. I-I just wanna be able to take you on a date."

"Are you sure, baby?" Josh asked. "I-I'm sure we can figure something else out if you want."

Tyler shook his head. "I-it's ok."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah," Tyler said quietly, nodding.

Josh sighed but nodded, kissing his cheek. "Well, I-I'm excited to see what you have planned," he said.

Tyler took a deep breath, accepting that he wouldn't be able to drive for a while, but things could be so, so, so much worse. Everything was absolutely perfect now other than the driving situation. And that was fine.

"I'm excited too," he said.

"Let's go do something fun," Josh said, standing up and holding his hands out for his husband to take. "What sounds fun?"

"I dunno," he said.

"Wanna look online at clothes for babies?" Josh asked. Tyler had really been going through baby fever recently, but he didn't want to even start going through the adoption process till he could drive, which was why it was especially hard to hear it'd be a while until he could.

Tyler shrugged.

"Wanna... um... hm. We can dye my hair!"

Tyler just shrugged again.

Josh was determined to bring Tyler's happiness back.

"I know," Josh said with a smile. "Let's go clubbing."

"What's that?" Tyler asked.

"It's when you go to a night club."

"Like... s-strippers?" Tyler asked nervously. "J-Joshie, I-i don't wanna be around strippers."

"No no no no no, baby," Josh quickly said. "No strippers. I promise. No strippers. You just kinda dance and have fun."

"Is it loud?"

"Oh, yeah..." Josh said. He had forgotten about his husband's noise sensitivity. "Let's um... let's just drive around and see if there's anything that looks fun. And if there is, let's do it. But if not, let's go rent some movies and have a movie and snuggle night. Sound good?"

Tyler nodded, getting up and slipping his arm around Josh's before stopping in his tracks and just hugging his husband tightly.

"I wish I could drive, Joshie," he said sadly.

"I know, baby. I know," Tyler said softly, running his hand up and down his back.

"C-cause I wanna do something special for you, b-but i-it has to be a surprise."

Josh nodded, kissing the top of his head. "I know, honey. It's hard. But someday you'll be able to. Someday real soon. I can feel it."

Tyler sighed, burying his face in Josh's neck.

"I love you," Josh said softly.

"I love you too," Tyler replied.

After being in the facility, he had had plenty of time to think of the perfect date he'd take Josh on for the first time. He'd really thought he'd be able to do it pretty soon after being released.

They went to Josh's Jeep that he was very proud of because he had just bought it, helping Tyler get in before hopping in the driver's seat.

Josh plugged his phone in to the aux so he could play music, his face turning bright red as the audio that came on was the audiobook he was listening to on how to make sex more romantic.

Tyler smiled slightly, turning to see Josh frantically trying to turn the volume down. "I-I don't know how that got there. I-I've never even heard of audiobooks. What even is that? I dunno."

Tyler giggled softly, leaning over and kissing the side of Josh's head. "My sweet boy."

Josh smiled shyly, blushing deeply.

Tyler reached over and took Josh's hand off the wheel and placed it in his own.

Josh drove around town, eventually stopping at a bakery because Tyler really wanted a cookie. So josh bought the treats and they snuggled up in the back of the Jeep, feeding each other their desserts.

"Joshua," Tyler said.

"Yes, baby?"

"When we have a lil baby girl someday, will we still go on dates?"

"We're havin' a baby girl?" Josh giggled. "You already decided we want a girl?"

Tyler nodded. "A boy would be too many in one house."

Josh laughed and kissed the top of his head. "Of course we will, baby. Nothing in the world could possibly stop me from going on dates with you."

Tyler smiled and kissed Josh's cheek. "One day, when I can drive, I'm gonna wake you up in the middle of the night and I'm gonna say 'Joshie, where do ya wanna go?' And I'm gonna take you there."

Josh grinned widely at how excited his husband was. "We should prolly head back home, baby. It's getting pretty late."

Tyler nodded, the boys returning to the front two seats.

They got home and immediately went to bed, Tyler falling asleep as soon as his head his the pillow.

"G'night, baby," Josh whispered softly as he ran his fingers through his beautiful husband's hair. "I love you so much. I'll see you in the morning."
