Chapter 16: I Want To Fly Too

"May I drop you to your college? I can drive you there on time." He asked me when I was stepping down the stairs.

I was getting late. It was already thirty past eight, and I had to reach college by nine. I take forty-five minutes to reach there. There was no way I'd be on time. But perhaps he could do something. I've seen him do things a normal person can't. He was but an angel.

I threw him the keys. Surprisingly, he caught it even though he was off guard and grinned, boasting his reflex.

I had woken up late. It was all his fault. That idiot woke up early, prepared breakfast, came back to my room and kept staring at me! What was I? A candy he couldn't eat? I was annoyed because there was an important lecture in the morning.

'Why didn't you wake me up?' I said loudly and in reply, he just gave a meek sorry. I didn't say anything more. I was still afraid that I might make him cry again. I agree it was partly my mistake for not setting alarm. But his share of fault was more than me.

I went to shower quickly. When I stepped downstairs after getting ready, I saw him waiting for me in the hallway and told me he can drop me in time.

"You're a madman!" I yelled, holding the seatbelt tightly with my left hand. He just smiled. His eyes were placed firmly on the road, and he was not even blinking. He was driving too fast, and I was afraid he would run into someone or something and cause an accident. That wasn't what I thought I'd have to go through when I threw him the keys.

I tried to shift my focus to the toast in my right hand. He had prepared for breakfast. I was glad he was dropping me. That way, I was able to eat the heavenly ambrosia prepared by the best cook in the world. I could taste peanut butter and a small amount of cream in it. The toast was a little more crunchy than how I usually make them. It was so simple, and yet it was so awesome. One day, I was going to steal away his secret manual on cooking.

"You'll cause an accident you go that fast," I warned him again.

"I won't."

"But it's dangerous. For others, if not for you."

"I'm a professional at driving... I used to have trouble going places. Then one day I thought of trying out a vehicle. Gaia herself taught me. It's not as convenient as flying, but it's still better than using legs. Nine years and I've never ever caused an accident or violation." That was an awesome record. I've been driving for six years and have caused a dozen minor violations like getting a speeding ticket twice and parking in a 'no parking' zone by mistake.

"I can imagine angels not needing any vehicle to travel."

"Yeah, and the best part is that we can fly as much as you want. There is almost no exhaustion when we fly."

"I want to fly too, one day. It must be fun," I said as I closed my eyes and imagined myself flying under the blue sky with my hands spread afar as if I was an aeroplane. Everything would look so small from up there. Maybe even the air would feel different from how it is in the city.

"It is fun." I heard his words. There was a slight touch of sadness in them. When I opened my eyes, I saw him smile. It was so fake. He had put on a brave face. My Black always hides. I was such an idiot for bringing this topic out. For me, it was just a fantasy desire to fly, but for him, it was a reminder of that bad memory. I should have been more considerate.

"One day, I will let you feel the joy of flying." I heard his sincere words.

"Like Superman?" I was excited but worried too. My angel only yad one wing and it was hard for him to fly by himself. I didn't want him to do any stupid thing that might harm him.

"Superman who?" I had completely forgotten that my Black lacks some common sense. I made a mental note to show him the movie next time we are free.

"Anyway, you'll get a ticket for speeding if you keep it that way," I tried to change the conversation. Just then my phone placed in the holder buzzed. It was Mira. I was afraid of letting go of that seat belt. And perhaps he might need me for the directions to the college.

"I know the way. You can pick up the phone." He said.

"What are you? A psychic?"

"I can read minds, you know. Did I not tell you before? And how do you think I came to know Lorex threatened you with a knife?" I remembered all those abilities of his vaguely. Now I think of it, I didn't tell him anything! He just started beating him up. He was saying the truth about reading minds.

"You must be kidding me. You have peeked into my mind?" He did such stuff before. I thought back then that it was a coincidence, but he can actually read minds! If that was true, then he knows that I sometimes think of marrying him and making him my wife. And he knows all the stuff I thought about him! It was so embarrassing. He was not supposed to know that.

"Just kidding... I don't read your mind. It's just something that I know without using any ability... It must be love." Black teased me.

"Then what about that day!" I demanded an honest answer.

"You appeared worried. So, it happened subconsciously..."

"How do I trust you?"

"I swear on my life."

"Then thanks for not invading my privacy... Most of the time." I sighed in relief. Black was trustworthy enough. I realized that my phone was still vibrating.

"Hello?" I answered the phone.

"Good morning. Where are you?" Mira asked.

"I'm on my way."

"Ok drive safe, I'll talk to you later."

"Nah, you can talk now. I'm not driving today."

"What happened to your car this time?" Last week when Black took my car, I told them that my car wasn't working and repairs were going to take a few days.

"Why did you call?" I changed the topic quickly. Didn't want to tell her about my Black.

"Well, I just found out there's a huge sale in the nearby supermarket. And I've to buy a present for my brother's birthday. Wanna come? Amber is coming too."

"Yeah, sure."

"So you're coming by bus again?"

"Nah. I'm in my car."

"Who's driving?"

"A... friend."

"When did you get a boyfriend?" She teased me. I should have told her some other lie. She would eventually know about Black, but I'd have been safe from her teases till then. I blurted without thinking.

"He's just a friend."

"A guy? Did the sun rise from the west today?"

"Yes, and no!"

"Are you sure he is just a friend?" Mira must be smirking on the other side of the phone. I didn't have a guy as a friend before. I didn't let any guy come close before. For some reasons, I didn't feel like any of them would fit into my life. But this angel, he was just something else.

"Anyway. It's cool. We got our free ride today," Mira said, breaking my little silence.

"You are such a bit..." I almost said the B-word. She wouldn't mind it. We three are too frank, but I didn't want to sound impolite in front of Black. I didn't want to give him any bad impression.

"You needn't hold back because of me."

"Bitch," I spoke without thinking and Black laughed on my swearing. I guess he didn't think that his 'angel' could speak like that too. But that was the way I was.

"Evy... He has such a sweet voice. It's not fair to keep such guy to yourself. Introduce him to us sometimes. I might have a go with him if you two aren't dating." Mira started spouting weird things again.

"Ugh..." It was going to be a hard day. They'd be all over me in the break. I better come up with an excuse before then. "Talk to you later," I said in a hurry and hung up on her.

Just then I heard the siren. I looked back and saw a police car chasing after us.

"I told you you'll get a ticket if you go that fast." I was surely going to be late.

"Just leave it to me," Black said, but he didn't reduce the speed. Instead, he increased it some more.

"What are you doing?"

He didn't reply. The cops quickly caught up with us. They were driving on the left side. I saw a young man, probably of the same age as ours, a year or two older.

"Sir, stop!" The young cop was probably going to ask Black to stop over but Black just looked at him in the eye for a moment and he stopped speaking. The next moment that young cop started chatting with Black as if nothing happened.

"What are you doing, James?" The cop driving asked, and then Black glanced at him in the same manner. That person got silent too and focussed on the road.

We soon turned to the right, and they didn't chase us anymore.

"What did you do?"

"Just locked some of their memories for a while."

"That's crazy! How many tricks do you know?" I guess he didn't get the title of strongest for no reason.

"Just a few."

"No wonder you said that you haven't violated any law yet."
* * * * *
We reached five minutes early. Thanks to him, I wasn't late, and I even had breakfast. He was too useful. Just wished that next time I don't get spoilt because of him.

He handed me the car key. The keychain was a black football before but he turned that into a cute panda.

"Aren't you going to pick me up?" I don't even know why I asked him that. He wasn't my boyfriend that he was supposed to pick me up.

"I think you've to go somewhere today with your friends." I was having serious doubts he doesn't use his powers on me.

"Yeah. You can come with us." I wouldn't mind a little more teasing that would follow. I will take that head on like a brave warrior. I can do it for him.

"Don't want to mess up the girls' night out."

"But how are you going back home?"

"I'll run there of course."

"It's very far. You can take a bus or a cab."

"I need some exercise to get back in shape."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeppp. Go, go. Or you'll be late."

He was surprised when I came close to him. His eyes were wide open as I pulled him closer to me and kissed him on his right cheek the same way I stole his first kiss. I don't know why I unknowingly start to behave like a lovesick girl in front of him. But it was just thanks from my side. I can't think of any better thanks for the guy who obsesses over me.

"I'm sorry I got mad at you in the morning. And thank you."

"Always at your service sweetheart."
